  • Garbage charaters in Thai PDF bookmarks

    Hi,
    Does anyone have any ideas why Thai bookmarks cannot be displayed correctly in Acrobat (4.0 and above) after generated from FrameMaker 7.x?
    I have tried both system font - FreesiaUPC and 3rd party font, however both can't resolve the garbage charaters in PDF bookmarks.
    Moreover, I copy & paste the title/heading from PDF page to bookmarks and some of the codes are missing.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    > ... why Thai bookmarks cannot be displayed correctly in Acrobat (4.0 and above) after generated from FrameMaker 7.x?
    This is apparently a limitation of the pre-FM8 legacy overlay fonts (non-Unicode) scheme.
    It's not just Thai. It doesn't work for bookmarks based on text containing the standard Symbol or Zaph Dingbats fonts either. What gets passed into the PostScript for PDF bookmark generation is apparently just the 8-bit Roman text code points, and no mark-up for font overlay.
    Other than aftermarket tools, the only solution is to migrate to Unicode, which also requires FM8 or later.
    Here's the test I ran.
    New simple document.
    Heading1 text:
      X5C
    Tag the 5 as Dingbats.
    Tag the C as Symbol.
    Print to PDF.
    The body text appears, approximately, as
      XXX
    The PDF bookmark appears as:
      X5C
    It also doesn't matter whether you tag as Character Format or as local font override. Neither gets into bookmarks. This choice, however, does matter for generated files, because it needs to be Character Format for TOC and IX to work, for example, and the Ch. Format needs to be in-catalog for those files.
    I might add that none of this is new. A search of any Framemaker forum looking for "character" .AND. "bookmark" turns up any number of on-point hits. The fundamental problem is the inherent limitations of codepage fonts. Adobe fixed this issue. The "patch" was called Framemaker 8.
    Even with aftermarket bookmark tools for FM7, I suspect my example above might not be fixable, because it alternates overlays inside the string.

    Hi,
    i have to display JSF page in Arabic language
    I have stored properties file in arabic using UTF-8 character encoding
    and save properties file for eg messages_ar.properties
    But Jsf page is displaying garbage charaters in place of arabic value
    My JSF page contains:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %>
    meta tag
    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    and even set encoding on html as UTF-8
    but still no effect
    Please help me out its urgent
    Thanks
    akashikha

    Hi,
    Try this...
    when viewing in a browser, you could try setting the encoding (on the view menu normally) to arabic (ISO-8859-6).
    But I am not sure have you done it or not?

    Hello out there.
    I have a real complicated matter with my Kt3 Ultra board.
    Used to work fine, but after I flashed it with the latest BIOS (5.7), the board has this strange behaviour: when I clear the CMOS, the board boots up, when I change & save the settings, the board does not "come to life"(black screen & beeper silent).
    It has also this weird problem: it shows garbage charaters on the voltage setting of the CPU. Instead of voltages (i.e. 1.750 etc. etc.) I have only "scrambled" strings.
    I had MANY difficulties in upgrading the BIOS because the AMI-flashing utility kept telling me "bios protection enabled) (but there was NO bios-protect setting in the previous bios - I checked a zillion times)...but after trying with different revisions finally I made it.
    I already tried everything (re-flashed older bios-es etc. etc.)and I'm starting to feel beat ... if you have any advice, please le me know.
     It would be really SAD to put this great board in the garbage-dump....
      Bye,
    Wyk'03

    im having problems with this board as well,
    i had no problems with the flash,
    i did this...
    boot to win me floppy,
    copy the flash files to ramdrive, flashed to latest bios..
    now windows hangs when i have my ac97 audio enabled in bios...
    I WANT MY AC97!
    hmmm can you get to a dos prompt from a boot disk?
    try re-flashing with 1.0 again and then disable the cmos virus protection thingy, and yes it was there it was in the 1.0 bios on the main screen.

    Alright, I'll try to keep it as simple as possible. If that's not going to work out, we can always complicate it later :)
    I suppose you had a look at the link and I assume you know about threads.
    We can easily fix this issue if you are instantiating, calling and disposing the object within one thread, e.g. you use it only in one method like
    public mySwtExecutionMethod(String fileName){
      WordSearchReplace replace = new WordSearchReplace();
      // do your replacing here
      replace.dispose();
      // no reference to replace is left so it won't escape this thread
    }Now the fix for your class becomes simple. As you remember from the link, you have to call all methods from within the UI thread. We will now create a Display every time upon instantiation of WordSearchReplace, so the current thread becomes the UI thread.
    I had a look at the constructor, and the overhead doesn't seem that bad, provided this is not a dedicated search&replace server.
    private final Display display;
    public WordSearchReplace()
         display = new Display(); // create display
         this.shell = new Shell(display);   // initialize shell with new display so this thread becomes the UI thread
         this.frame = new OleFrame(this.shell, SWT.NONE);
         this.wordSite = new OleClientSite(this.frame, SWT.NONE, WordSearchReplace.PROG_ID);
         this.wordAutomation = new OleAutomation(this.wordSite);
    }Since we always create a new Display, we should also dispose it. There is already a dispose() method, so we just have to add to it
    display.dispose();That's it!
    If you hold on longer to your reference and this isn't working for you, you'd have to do a lot more synchronizing and that the UI thread still exist as long as the reference.
    Wish you good luck

  • Eror downloading a XLS file on the portal hosted struts/j2EE application

    guys,
    1st of all please bare with for writing such a huge mail but to explain the scenario i had to do this.
    i am trying to download a XLS file from the web application (struts/J2EE) hosted on the portlet.
    on my portlet i have few text boxes and a button.
    onlcik of the buton there are few validation javascripts and if the valdatin is thrugh then the form is submitted.
    there are 2 ways i can submit the form to the struts action class.
    both approaches have some problem or the other.
    Apporach 1
    var postUrl = document.getElementById('getReportURL_$$PORTLET_ID$$').innerHTML;
    var post = new PTHTTPPOSTRequest(postUrl, form, handleInlinePostResponse_$$PORTLET_ID$$);
    post.invoke();
    this is like a AJAX request post where the response comes back in the function handleInlinePostResponse_$$PORTLET_ID$$ which can be then handled.
    Problems
    1. as from action class i am trying to send a XLS file, i am writing the byte stream of the XLS file on the output stream of the response. when the response reaches the function handleInlinePostResponse_$$PORTLET_ID$$ on portlet jsp it gives me an javascript exception 'End of file reached in invalid state for current encoding' but while sending the response i am encoding the byte stream.
    the code snippet from the action class is as below
    response.reset();
    response.resetBuffer();
    response.setHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + reportData.getFilename());
    response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
    response.setContentType("application/vnd.ms-excel");
    response.getOutputStream().write(reportData.getContent()); //byte[] form of the XLS file
    return null; //as we write on the response out stream the response is already commited hence the return null has no significance.
    2. in case of the any exception on server side this approach is helpful as the error content jsp is rendered in to the portlet from where the action was fired.
    Approach 2
    form.action = "<pt:url xmlns:pt='http://www.plumtree.com/xmlschemas/ptui/' pt:href='downloadCommercialXLSReport.do'/>" ;
    form.submit();
    This approach is normal for submitting any struts from bean to the struts action class (i know this is not a aprropriate way to submit d form through portlet as it submits whole page inclusding all the portlet data)
    Problems
    1. here in case of the sucess the XLS file is returned to the browser which openes a browser specific dialogue box having 'Save' 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons to save/open the XLS file. (please note no javascript exception occurs here as approach one as the byte streeam content is returned to the browser directly and not to any post response handler function as handleInlinePostResponse_$$PORTLET_ID$$)
    2. But here the problem is in case of any sever side exception the error jsp is rendered on whole browser page and not in portlet which is kinda goofy.
    so now i am in a catch 22 scenario each approach has 1 problem either in success or in failure flow.
    can sombody suggest me a way out from this as i desperately need to download a XLS file.
    lemme kno if anybody has done a similar download stuf through portal server.
    regards,
    Sush

    i have done this before although it was in .net. try the first approach but first pop to a new window....the xls response has to be the only response to the browser or else the browser will take the other bytes returned as garbage and call the stream corrupt. let me know how this goes for you.
    if you still have problems i can post the code that worked for me. it is in c# but looks very similar.

  • SPRING vs STRUTS

    Hii Javaties
    Can anyone tell us which framework is better STRUTS or SPRING. ?
    and what are the advantages and disadvanatages of each framework.

    I am using Weblogic 9.
    Can i deploy a application made with Springs
    framework on Weblogic ?Not only you can, but there is actually tight integration between the two.
    At one point, BEA rewrote their sample application to use Spring. See Spring on WebLogic Server kit.
    Going further, BEA implemented the EJB 3.0 spec using Spring in a project called Pitchfork.
    Finally, WebLogic Realtime Server (WRLT) uses a determinisitic Garbage Collector (JRockit), and advocates the use of the Spring framework.

  • Stateless ejb staying live after a garbage collector

    Hi,
    I use an aplication based in struts, in the actions i call session that call cmps, both ejb are stateless.
    Every thing works fine until i make some stress test, when i find that the server (Websphere) stay out of memory. After this i found that my sessions and cmps are staying live after the garbage collector run and i don't know why because the thread already finish and the ejb are stateless.
    Anyone already have this problem, how can i clear the memory of this objects?
    Thanks in advanced
    Ricardo

    Adjust the size of your EJB pool. Just because your application is no longer using the objects doesn't mean that the container won't hang on to them for re-use (object creation is an "expensive" operation).

  • For struts - fwd the formbean in multiple JSP-action-JSPs

    Hello All,
    I know this is EJB forum but just I had one Qn so posting.
    I know you all must be doing struts as you are doing EJbs.
    I have following things and I want to HIT the DB only at last JSP
    submit click. How do I keep the formbeans ?
    READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY ---------
    I can use session but, I want request or some similar way, or
    if there is any thing struts way,
    if all is not possible then I will go for session.
    Please don't tell me any request or action chaining because
    that is not something the case here and as it is highly discouraged
    I am NOT going to use that. its not that case anyways,
    JSP 1 - has a formbean 1
    - submit - goes to Action1
    ACTION1 - get the formBean1 ( I get the values1 here hahahaha)
    do any processing on formBean1 if needed
    set the formbean1 in request ( i am doing this )
    mapping.findfwd("success") - to JSP 2
    JSP2 - <%get the formbean1 from request and SOP it
    (I get the values1 here hahaha) %>
    has its own field and formBean2
    submit - goes to Action2
    ACTION2 - get the formBean2 (I get the values2 haha)
    get the formBean1 (I get NULL ?????)
    Point is I want to set the formBean1 from request
    orginating from JSP2 -submit. JSP2-formBean2 gets submitted there
    properly but how can keep fwding formBean1.
    Please don't tell me to keep ALLL formBean1 values as hidden
    in JSP2. as its not good logic and its tooo much values. etc. etc.
    As a matter of fact I have 4 such JSPs and if user selectes codes
    on page 4 then only send all earlier 3 formBeans + current formBean4
    to DB, else ignore all ( means just ignore, go to new jsp or main menu
    let all formBeans garbage collected... hahahaha )
    How can I do this ?
    I will reply to any Qn s immly as I am in hurry....delivery is very very near
    guys ..........:)
    anyways,
    Enjoy the coding.....!!!
    Sandeep

    Off hand, the only thing I can think of is to create two completely separate projects.
    However, if you want to maintain a good development team and project, I suggest you keep it as one project and not try to hide anything from one group of developers. Instead, install CVS as your repository. It will track what changes were made and by who and you can roll back to a previous version of a JSP or java class if necessary. Your team should be briefed on the architecture you decide on (Spring, Sturts, etc), and basic good coding practices you want enforced.
    Here are a few rules:
    * nothing is to be checked into CVS that doesn't compile cleanly.
    * nothing is to be checked into CVS that has any error or warning messages form your IDE outstanding.
    * nothing is checked into CVS without the comment field of the commit dialog box being filled in.
    * You have one build.xml file that eveyone uses to compile all code.
    * All JSP pages are to be well formed xml (no dangling tags).
    * all java classes and JSP pages are to be properly indented.
    * all classes are to have javadoc describing what a class is for, and all functions are to have javadoc describing what the function does (not how it does it).

  • A program that I would like to garbage can...

    I was futzing around and thought I would take a look at DVD sharing re my MBA (DVD-less). In my web search I found a program called...
    "DVD_or_CD_sharing_setup.dmg" which I downloaded and ran. I never did see any change in my system so I moved the download to the Garbage Can.  Then, it trying to empty the trash, a message popped up that said...
    "DVD_or_CD_sharing_setup.dmg" is in use and unable to empty from garbage.  I've done a search and can't find this program anywhere on the HD.  Anyone know how to get this file off my MBA?
    I should note that in look at the dmg file, it says it was created in March 5, 2008.  More old web trash sitting around waiting for someone like me to download it.
    Sure would like to make it disappear completely.

    Disregard the question above.  I just discovered how to delete the program.  It was hiding under DEVICES in Finder.  A quick "eject" and it was gone from there and then from garbage.

  • Using a variable in Struts config, to redirect

    In the struts-config file,
    to redirect to a different site, I can use
    redirect="true"
    and mention full path, in my <forward path=
    variable.
    1. Is there a better way to do it?
    2. Since I have to do it in multiple places, is it possible to use a variable? I mean, something like this
    <forward
    name="success"
    path="URL/abc.html" />
    Where URL is a variable name that the site path? This way, I can reuse the variable to redirect to other pages too (xyz.html, for example)

    Hi there,
    I don't know...is there only one URL you are using ore are there more than one? Because if it's the same path everytime you can try using this:
    <forward
    name="success"
    path="./abc.html" />
        ./               // This is the shortcut for the directory you are currently using.
        ../              // This is the shortcut for the directory above the one you are currently using.This code should do it. If not, try to create a var named for example "vpath" and put it like this:
    <forward
    name="success"
    path=vpath+"abc.html" />Try and tell if it worked ;)

  • Photoshop CS3 printing garbage characters on HP LaserJet 1300

    After installing CS3, Photoshop prints garbage characters on my HP LaserJet 1300.
    Yes, I have tried printing as ASCII, ASCII85, Binary and JPEG - nothing helps (plus the settings won't stick even after holding down Alt and clicking the Remember button).
    The only way to print right now is to choose Save as PDF in the print dialogue, open the PDF in Adobe Reader and print from there.
    Any ideas?

    tzw - I responded about this on another forum. I talked to technical support at Adobe about this exact issue about 2 months ago - can't print photoshop CS3 on any of my three HP printers. ( I have a HP1200, an HP 2550 and a HP photosmart 7660) (CS2 works fine) They worked with me for about an hour - called me back and worked some more, and then decided to send it up to the programmers (or engineers or whatever) The programmers called me and worked with me for another hour - trying different set-ups etc., but the conclusion by them was that this was a huge problem in that there were a lot of HP printers out there - that they were going to give this their top priority - and that there would be a fix for this soon. (I have yet to see a fix.)

  • Hotspot core dumping during JVM garbage collection ?

    We have an application which calls a 3rd party supplied server API which has recently been upgraded to use Java 1.5
    We are getting the following error reported by our client application. The application is also now running Java 1.5 but references many classes in jar files which would have quite old code in.
    The supplier of the API has stated that the problem requires us to recompile all our jar files using v 1.5 ( including things like jconnect and jms ?!?!? ). This sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, not to mention being impossible since we don't have the source for things like jconnect.
    I suspect that there is a garbage collection problem at the bottom of all this, but I'm not sure how I can "prove" this, nor do I currently have any real clue as to how to fix any GC problem that may exist.
    The application is supposed to wait for a message on a MQSeries queue and then transforms it via Xalan XSLT and sends it to a Server application. I've tried playing around with heap sizes etc but that just seems to make it worse. If I leave it at the settings that the previous version used then the client at least manages to process a couple of messages before core dumping. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event to cause the core dump ( it's not a message arriving on a queue for example ) but it does seem to be fairly consistent timewise, i.e. after
    Any ideas gratefully accepted.

    The very first suggestion I have is to move your VM to a more recent update of 1.5.0.
    It looks like you are crashing with 5.0u3, and I'm pretty sure 5.0u16 is available. You
    don't want to waste your time chasing a bug that's already been fixed.

  • J2EE Struts - Database connection failed - help???:(

    Hello,
    I have built a little web application and it works without any problems. In the next step I tried to add a database connection but I have already worked on it for at least one day and I could not fix the problem with the database connection.
    I downloaded the MySQL Server 5.0 and installed it, furthermore I have downloaded the jdbc driver mysql-connector-java-3.1.11.zip and extracted it to the MySQL Server 5.0 directory. Furthermore I have added under system settings - system - etended - system variables the whole path to the driver -> C:\Programme\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\mysql-connector-java-3.1.11\mysql-connector-java-3.1.11-bin.jar to the CLASSPATH systemvariable.
    Then I have startet the SQL Server 5.0 with mysqld --console from the command line.
    Furthermore I have added under Project-Properties-Java Build Path - Libraries - Add External JARs in Eclipse the mysql-connector-java-3.1.11-bin.jar to my Struts WebProject.
    To test the whole thing I have added to the existing test-database from mysql a table named owner and wanted to test the database connection in the Action-class with the following statements - I quote the whole execute method of the OwnerAction class:
    public ActionForward execute(
                     ActionMapping mapping,
                     ActionForm form,
                     HttpServletRequest request,
                     HttpServletResponse response)
                     throws Exception {
                   OwnerForm ownerForm = (OwnerForm) form;
                   String greet = ownerForm.getGreet();
                   String name = ownerForm.getName();
                   request.setAttribute("name", name);
                   request.setAttribute("greet", greet);
                   String address = ownerForm.getAddress();
                   String email = ownerForm.getEmail();
                   int tel = ownerForm.getTel();
                   Connection conn = null;
                   Statement stmt = null;
                   ResultSet rs = null;
                   DriverManager.registerDriver(new org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver());
                   conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/test","root","sa");
                   try {
                         //conn = dataSource.getConnection();
                         stmt = conn.createStatement();
                         int id = 0;
                         rs = stmt.executeQuery("select max(id) as counter from owner");
                         while(rs.next()){
                            id = rs.getInt("counter");
                         id += 1;
                         stmt.executeUpdate("insert into owner values("+id+", '"+greet+"', '"+name+"', '"+email+"', '"+address+"', "+tel+")");
                         rs.close();
                         stmt.close();
                         conn.close();
                      catch(SQLException e){
                         throw new SQLException("database error");
                      // Forward control to the specified success target
                      return (mapping.findForward("success"));
          }But when I execute the WebApplication and the Action will be called the following error message appears in the browser:

    It must depend with anything that the driver was not found but I have defined it in the CLASSPATH variable and added it to the Web-Project in eclispe.
    Has anybody an idea what I have else made wrong or have forgotten??:(:(:(
    thanks in advance

    One thing I have forgotten - I have also copied the mysql-connector-java-3.1.11-bin.jar in the WebRoot\WEB-INF\lib directory of my EasyStruts WebApplication.
    Can anything else be wrong??:(:((
