Struts String Array problem:

Hello All,
I'm working on a DynaValidatorForm in struts and I'm not able to define my string arrays without compile errors in WSAD 5.0 and it doesn't work right with the validator for those two items. WSAD 5.0 uses a 1.3 beta version of struts and that may be the problem or it may be a bug in the validator. Not sure which. This is what I have in the struts-config.xml file for the form-bean:
<form-beans>
<form-bean name="submitDynaValidateForm"
type="org.apache.struts.validator.DynaValidatorForm">
<form-property name="lastName"     type="java.lang.String"/>
<form-property name="address"      type="java.lang.String"/>
<form-property name="sex"      type="java.lang.String"/>
<form-property name="married"      type="java.lang.String"/>
<form-property name="children"      type="java.lang.String[]"/>
<form-property name="age"      type="java.lang.String"/>
<form-property name="interests" type="java.lang.String[]"/>
</form-bean>
</form-beans>
Anyone come across this problem before and do you know how to solve it other than doing the validation for the String Arrays in the Action class?
Thanks,
James

I don't know how to solve it, but I'd wonder about the need to validate the array of Strings. I think that should just be a String type.
If you have String arrays to populate a drop-down list, I think the assumption has to be that the drop-down has been populated properly. There's no need to re-check it every time. Even if the list is changing, because its contents are driven by another selection, the responsibility for getting those values correct lie outside the validator's domain.
And since the single selection that's actually sent as input comes from an array of valid values, there's no opportunity for the user to send an invalid value.
I think the validation framework is for checking manual, typed user input to make sure they're the correct types, no typo errors, etc.
Business validity is another matter that the Struts validation framework shouldn't address. Those business rules belong on the middle tier, IMO.

  • WebService problem: only the first element of a string array is returned

    Hello,
    i did the J2EE QuickCarRental tutorial and extended it by some features: I created another entity bean and implemented four new methods in the QuickOrderProcessor. Then i deployed it as a WebService and accessed it using the Visual Composer.
    Everything works fine except the return value of one WebService method. I created a method with the return value String[]. But the Visual Composer reads it as String. Only the first element of the resulting string array is displayed. Although the test at the web-page http://<server>:<port>/QuickCarRentalService/Config1 displays the whole string array with all its elements. What did i wrong?
    Another problem is that after deploying the J2EE-Application with new WebService methods the changes are not visible inside the visual composer. Although the test at the web-page http://<server>:<port>/QuickCarRentalService/Config1 displays the changes. Do i have to restart the WebService system in the portal content? If yes how can i do that?

    Here are details about setting up and using web services and some examples:

  • Problem in reading data from Excel sheet to 2D string array (ActiveX & LabView).

    I am trying to read data from Excel sheet to 2D string array (ActiveX & LabView). Error -2147352571 is generated (type mismatch) if cell value is "#NULL!", "#N/A" etc. What should I do?

    Hello
    Is the error happening when the cell value is #NULL or #NA only?
    Sometimes these errors occur because of an ActiveX object mismatch. The version of the ActiveX object might have changed or been updated since the VI was created. The VI tries to use an earlier, incompatible version of the ActiveX object.
    To solve the problem, you need to link automation refnum terminal to the correct ActiveX object. To do so, right-click an automation refnum terminal and choose Select ActiveX Class»Browse from the shortcut menu. From the Type Library pull-down menu, select the latest version of the library you want to use, such as Microsoft Excel Object Library. In the Objects list, select an ActiveX object, and click the OK button. Link ea
    ch automation refnum terminal in the VI and its subVIs until the run arrow is not broken. Also, you might have to replace some or all of the Invoke Nodes and Property Nodes for the ActiveX objects.
    Also, I came across this Knowledgebase. The error number is slightly different but it is always good to check it out and make sure it is not your case.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems declaring string array.

    I am having a problem declaring string arrays in a class that I am writing now. For some reason this code won't work:
    public class rotors()
    String[] rotor = new String[5];
    rotor [0] = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ";
    rotor [1] = "ACEGIKMOQSUWYBDFHJLNPRTVXZ";
    rotor [2] = "BDFHJLNPRTVXZACEGIKMOQSUWY";
    rotor [3] = "AEIOUYBCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXZ";
    rotor [4] = "BCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXZAEIOUY";
    }//end rotorsOn the other hand, this code will:
    public class rotors()
    String[] rotor={"ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ","ACEGIKMOQSUWYBDFHJLNPRTVXZ","BDFHJLNPRTVXZACEGIKMOQSUWY", "AEIOUYBCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXZ",  "BCDFGHJKLMNPQRSTVWXZAEIOUY"};
    }//end rotorsI've noticed that the first code block that I posted will work, but only if I post it in a method, but not just hanging out in the class. Can anyone tell me why this is so? It seems odd to me that the first code doesn't work while the second one does. Thanks a lot

    You can initialize a newly declared variable outside of a method/constructor/initializer block, but you can't call other statements outside of these blocks. The rotor array is declared here: String[] rotor... and can only be initialized (if at all) on this line.

  • Problems with string arrays

    Previous task was:
    Write a class "QuestionAnalyser" which has a method "turnAnswerToScore". This method takes a String parameter and returns an int. The int returned depends upon the parameter:
    parameter score
    "A" 1
    "B" 2
    "C" 3
    other 0
    Alright, here's the recent task:
    Write another method "turnAnswersToScore". This method takes an array of Strings as a parameter, works out the numerical score for each array entry, and adds the scores up, returning the total.
    That's my code:

    public static void main(String[] args) {}

    else if (Answer[i].equals("C")) {
    Score = Score + 3;}
    else {

    return Score;
    this is the error message I get:

  • Getting one character at a certain position from a string array

    Hi, i'm new at learning java, but have strong experience at C++ and asm. How would i get one character at a certain positon from a string array.
    for example:
    String Phrases[] = {"To be or not to be, that is the question","The Simpsons","The Mole","Terminator three rise of the machines","The matrix"};
    that is my string array above.
    lets say i wanted to get the first character from the first element of the array which is "T", how would i get this

    ok well that didn't work, but i found getChars function can do what i want. One problem, how do i check the contents of char array defined as char Inchar[];

  • String Array Constant Addition

    Is there an elegant way of marking the last element in a string array
    constant? i.e. I take an Array constant, and add a simple string to it,
    so that it becomes a String Array Constant. Now I add elements 1 and 2
    and 3. But now I want to take element 3 out. If I just delete Element 3

    elements is still 3. It is just that the 3rd elelment is null. How can I

    Arrays must be all the same type. If the last element is a constant, all
    elements are

    In a string, yes, Empty strings are essentially nulls.

    This is one of my problems. It is easy to size an array up, but hard to size
    down.
    Of course you can resize at run time but the only way I know to do this
    when editing is to start over.

  • Large string array in 6.1 is extremely slow

    Good day all,
    While this is in to tech support at NI, I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered it.
    I am upgrading from 6.0.2 to 6.1. Several large (2500 rows by 250 columns or larger) string arrays are used as inputs into subvi's. Under 6.0.2, these functions run in tenths of seconds, while under the converted 6.1 vi's they run in 20 seconds or more!
    Tracing back using probes, the problem is occurring at the point of the input. It is appears that the array is taking many seconds to copy from the input to the wire on the diagram.
    Array controls generated in 6.1 (not converted from 6.0.2) seem to function just fine. Using a save with options... to convert back to 6.0.2, the vi's again function in tenths of
    seconds.
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

    I hear what you're saying about legacy code...
    Something you might want to be looking at for the future is migrating to a structure where the data is stored in a 1D array, where each element is a cluster contain the data that's now in a single row. This would be the most straight-forward change, but could make getting at the data tricky, depending on how you need to be able to search it.
    Alternately, you could have a cluster containing arrays of each of the row values.In this structure element 0 of all the arrays is the first "row", element 1 of the arrays is the second "row" and so on. This structure at first blush looks more complicated, but it's really not, plus it would allow you to use any value (or combination of
    values) to search for a specific row without a lot of parsing.
    If the data that is in the example VIs you posted is typical, either of these changes would be advantagous because it looks like there is a lot of reptative data that might be able to be encoded in an enum. Plus storing numbers as numbers often reduces the memory required and produces a predictable memory footprint (an I32 will always take-up 4 bytes per value regardless of how large of small the number is). My sense is that the variability of the string size is what's killing you.
    One thing that would make this sort of dramatic change somewhat easier is that because you are changing the basic datatype of the interface, you aren't going to have to worry about finding all the places the change will effect--the wires will be broken.
    If you ever decide to take this on, give a hollar.

    String[] temp = array[k1];
    array[k1] = array[k2];

    if I call this from the main module like this
    import MyUtil.*;
    public class kaka
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
    String[][]a = MyUtil.fileToArray("array.txt");
    MyMatrix.printf(a);
    System.out.println("");
    MyMatrix.sort(a,1);
    MyMatrix.printf(a);
    System.out.println("");
    MyMatrix.sort(a,3);
    MyMatrix.printf(a);
    for the first sorting I get
    1 aaa 213 0.9
    2 abc 219 1.3
    9 bba 111 7.1
    9 bbc 417 10.4
    3 cbb 514 0.1
    8 dee 887 2.1
    (lexicographic)
    but for the second one (column 3) I get
    3 cbb 514 0.1
    1 aaa 213 0.9
    2 abc 219 1.3
    9 bbc 417 10.4
    8 dee 887 2.1
    9 bba 111 7.1
    this is not the order I want to apply to this sorting, I would like to create my own one. but or I can't or I don't know how to use a comparator on this case.
    I don't know if I am rediscovering the wheel with my (Sort String[][], but I think that has be an easy way to sort arrays of arrays better than this one.
    I've been trying to understand the Question of the week 106 (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/qow/archive/106/) that sounds similar, and perfect for my case. But I don't know how to pass my arrays values to the class Fred().
    Any help will be deeply appreciated
    Thanks for your help and your attention

    public class StringArrayComparator implements Comparator {
      int sortColumn = 0;
      public int setSortColumn(c) { sortColumn = c; }
      public int compareTo(Object o1, Object o2) {
        if (o1 == null && o2 == null)
          return 0;
        if (o1 == null)
          return -1;
        if (o2 == null)
          return 1;
        String[] s1 = (String[])o1;
        String[] s2 = (String[])o2;
        // I assume the elements at position sortColumn is
        // not null nor out of bounds.
        return s1[sortColumn].compareTo(s2[sortColumn]);
    // Then you can use this to sort the 2D array:
    Comparator comparator = new StringArrayComparator();
    comparator.setSortColumn(0); // sort by first column
    String[][] array = ...
    Arrays.sort(array, comparator);I haven't tested the code, so there might be some compiler errors, or an error in the logic.

  • How to retrieve string array using Session?

    Hi, I am having some problem retrieving string arrays through session.
    String personalData[] = new String[17];
    personalData = (String [])session.getValue("PersonalData");
    The coding above isn't working. Advise pls.. Thanks

    The getValue() method is deprecated - you should probably be using getAttribute.
    What about this code isn't working? Looks ok to me, as long as the "PersonalData" object in the session is a String[] it should work.

  • Help! Inserting a 1-D comment array into a 2-D string array at specified row AND column

    Hello everyone,
    I am writing a 2-D string array to excel and i need a way to add comments to my file like this:
    SLAM    NAME    G Level    Comments
    1              RALF         26
    1              RALF         26
    1              RALF         26
    1              RALF         26
    For some reason, i cannot specify a row AND column to write because:
    When i use replace array subset it only replaces 1 element at my index.
    When i use replace array subset with a loop, it creates empty spaces until it reaches the end of the array it is replacing.
    When i use Insert into array: i cannot wire 2 inputs for row and column.
    In my complete VI i will need to write from row 1-1001, a different comment from 2-2002, a different comment from 3-3003, etc until a stop condition is met so i need to figure out how to do this programatically and not have it replace any elements outside of the range or it will override previous commetns.
    I am at a loss of what to do. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi proph,

  • How Do I Call PL/SQL Stored Procedure That Returns String Array??

    I Have Problem Calling An Oracle(8i) Stored Procedure That Returns Array Type (Multi Rows)
    (As Good As String Array Type..)
    In This Fourm, I Can't Find Out Example Source.

    Please Help Me !!!
    Thanks in advance,

  • External java function that should return String array

    Hi everyone,
    I have a split function in plsql that takes 10 times longer a java tokenizer function that i was written. So, i want to use java external function to split my plsql strings into pieces.
    I can write a java external procedure that returns types like int, float and String types. I have no problem about it.
    My problem is returning an array of strings. I found a book that has an example about how can we get directory list in plsql with java external procedure.
    (code)
    import java.io.File;
    import java.sql.*;
    import oracle.sql.*;
    import oracle.jdbc.*;
    public class JFile {
    public static oracle.sql.ARRAY dirlist (String dir)
    throws java.sql.SQLException
    Connection conn = new OracleDriver().defaultConnection( );
    ArrayDescriptor arraydesc =
    ArrayDescriptor.createDescriptor ("DIRLIST_T", conn);
    File myDir = new File (dir);
    String[] filesList = myDir.list( );
    ARRAY dirArray = new ARRAY(arraydesc, conn, filesList);
    return dirArray;
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION dirlist (dir IN VARCHAR2)
    RETURN dirlist_t
    AS
    LANGUAGE JAVA
    NAME 'myFile.dirlist(java.lang.String) return oracle.sql.ARRARY';
    (code)
    I could compile this source file in localhost but not remotehost. There are jar files ( import oracle.sql.*; import oracle.jdbc.*; ) that should be added to remote classpath. ( others have already added java classpath ). But, which classpath i should add? Oracle has own JVM and Classpath, probably i should upload these jar files to oracle classpath. Am i wrong? How can i do? Can you explain in detail? How can i return string array from java external function in Oracle ?
    I am using Oracle 11.1.0.7 on Solaris Sparc Machine.

    Hi,
    What do you mean "compile in remote host"
    Aren't you using the loadjava tool? - that should be enough, the RDBMS already "has" the jars needed.
