Stubborn geocoded photos

Hello!
I have some places recorded in My Places (menu > Window > Manage My Places).
Geocoded photos won't show up on the geocoded coordinates, but are showing up on the nearest My Places point.
I deleted all recorded My Places and some pictures jump to other places.
If on Get Info I click on "Photo place", click on the "X" and then Done, the picture shows up on the right place. But the next time I load iPhoto, pictures go back to its wrong places.
Anyone knows how to solve this?
By the way, Rescan for Location does not solve the problem.
Many thanks for your time and support!

Geocoded photos won't show up on the geocoded coordinates, but are showing up on the nearest My Places point.
This sounds like they are within the "blue circle" of your "nearest My Place" - try reducing the size of one of the circles and see if that eliminates this

  • Inaccurate GPS data when exporting from iPhoto

I'm trying to export geotagged photos from iPhoto, and I'm experience some odd behavior.
    1) When I tag the photos outside of iPhoto, the photos' geo information comes up correctly in Places, but when I try to export the photo (either drag to desktop or File > Export > File Export and set +Kind: Current+ ) I get the correct latitude but the longitude is on the other side of the world according to Preview. (My best guess, I'd say about 180° off.) If I export the same photo but set +Kind: JPEG+ the location info in Preview looks fine.
    2) I see similar behavior when I try to export a photo I geotag within iPhoto. If I drag-export or File > Export with +Kind: Current+ (as above), the exported file has no geo info, but if I export with +Kind: JPEG+ it's fine.
I'm trying to geotag photos for a friend and then send the pics back to him, but I don't want to re-compress them. Has anyone else encountered this and come up with a workaround?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

Seems like iPhoto may not be well suited for working on other people's photos since it requires an import/add followed by an export. iPhoto isn't really build for this sort of thing.
Instead you might try something like Graphic Converter. You can browse your folders (no importing necessary) and Geocode photos by using Google Earth to locate the positions. GC will then apply that current Earth location to any selected photos with a menu item. This writes the data directly to the photos so no need to export either and it doesn't effect the photos in any way by re-compressing or otherwise processing the photos themselves.
    Best of luck,

  • Assign all pics in a project to same place

I have 42 pics in a Project and only one of those has GPS metadata because it was shot with an iPhone; the others were not.  Since all pics are from the same exact location, how do I assign all pics to that one known GPS place?
    Thanks,  Robb

if the reference photo was imported into Aperture its location will have been placed, no?
Sort of, the place will be the closest named place in the database - when I import geocoded photos from my Antartica trip, Aperture's place label will be "South Atlantic Ocean" - they will show the correct position on the map, because they have GPS, but I cannot use the place "South Atlantic Ocean" to add more photos to  the same place. If markers in the vicinity are missing in the predefined Places lists, I have to create my own.
This is a problem, if you are in areas, where the maps are poor and. Apple's map are not very detailed in the national parks or off the roads. And the Places database has many places in the cities, but not so many in the rural areas or the wilderness.

  • Can I use a map image from location as part of a slideshow

I have location data for almost all of my photos.  When I look at the photo info there is a nice (Google) map with the location pin.  I would like to capture that little map to include in a slidshow or album.  Someimes it would be nice to use the map to transition from one event to another.  Is there a way to do that in iPhoto or Aperture?
    Thanks
    Ed

Ed, what is your Aperture version?
In any version you could simply take a screenshot - press ⇧⌘4, select the rectangle with the map and you will find a screenshot on your Desktop. Import it to Aperture.
But, depending on your Aperture version, you could also take a screenshot of the map in "Places" view, that would give a better resolution, or directly use a slideshow theme with maps included - the "Places" slideshow theme will include maps for the geocoded photos.
And finally, you can create maps as part of the Photobooks. If you use a "travel" or "Journal" theme for a book, you can show the places on a map. Then simply print the page to pdf and and include the pdf as photo in your slideshow.

  • Free Update to HoudahGeo released

I just returned from MacWorld and saw the HoudahGeo folks there - they just released a new version what has the ability to autocode photos from other photos - typically you would take one photo with your iPhone and then lots of photos with your camera - HoudahGeo can then Geocode the camera photos to the same location as the iPhone (or other GeoCoded photo) based on time
If you own HoudahGeo click on the check for updates in in the file menu

First of all, welcome to the forums.
Unfortunately, your question is impossible to answer as Apple has not disclosed a release date for Leopard at this time. All they have stated is that it will be released during the first half of 2007. I am not certain where you are getting your information that it will be released the first of the year but until Apple announces a date, I would suggest you ignore that information as it is at best a guess. Historically, they have not offered upgrade pricing except for those computers bought between the day the release is announced and the day it ships, generally a 10-14 day period. Other than that you pay the full price.

  • Can photos in a Gallery Link?

I'm making a flipbook of photos that need to refer to later text pages. How can I get a photo (or it's caption) to serve as a link to the later page? Neither the photos nor the caption text allow the use of Hyperlink (I highlight pic or it's caption text and the Hyperlink section remains, stubbornly, greyed out and inactive for anything within a photo Gallery).
Is there any way to do this? Or can anyone think of a work-around for this?
I'm trying to have a quick intro section of the book that shows off the photos for sections that follow. And all three of the first people I handed a proof to tried to tap the photo to go to the section and then when that didn't work, they looked for a link in the caption text below....
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Isn't iBooks Author fun?!

I don't disagree ... .  I tested LR3, Ap3, and C1Pro5 for some large projects, and settled on Aperture because it's organization tools were a whole level deeper than LR's (at the time, C1P had none), and I prefered the interface.  I'm no wiz at LR, but I suspect the two are pretty much dead even photo developing tools.  I'm not at all tempted by LR, but I am drawn to C1P for photo developing.  If I didn't have so much time invested in Aperture -- and so many Images under management -- I would look again at C1P now that it claims to be fully integrated with a DAM.
I think Aperture could be easily the best of the lot.  Like you, however, I don't see Apple aiming for "best".
If you like Aperture and want to see it changed in any particular ways, send feedback.  Apple may not respond the way you want -- but they certainly won't respond to things they don't hear.

  • Why does that same photo keep appearing in the edited folder????

Why is that same photo always mysteriously appear in the edited folder whenever a photo is added to camera roll?????  If I happen to take a picture on my iPad, then if I go to iPhoto, there is this one stubborn picture that mysteriously appears in the edited folder. When I try to revert it to original so I can get it out from the edit folder, it's not highlighted. So what I do is actually edit it then revert it to original, then it disappears. However if I go back to the iPad camera and take a picture or just save a picture from safari that same stubborn photo reappears in iPhoto edit folder when I launch the app. If that's not a bug, then what is????

  • Buttons appear as Question Marks in Photo Page

    Hey all,
I've been having this problem where buttons (Start Slideshow, Email Me, and Made on a Mac) show up as Question Marks on one of my Photo pages (titled "New Photos)
    Follow Link below:
    http://web.mac.com/adventurestorys/iWeb/Site%201/New%20Photos.html
In the past I've been able to make a small change to the page and re-publish which corrects the problem. But this one is stubborn. Any advice?
Note that I have already tried the "Publish all to .Mac" and that didn't help. And I do Empty my Cache in Safari after Publishing. Also, the problem only occurs on this particular photo page, the others in the site are just fine. So I recreated the page from scratch and re-published, but that still didn't help. Not sure what to try next. Thanks for your help.

    Cabo23:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I see what you mean. The images for the buttons are not located by the page but they still work. Are these special image files you're using or the ones that come with the theme?
You might try creating a new photo page, select all of the photos from the old page and past into the placeholder on the new one. Do the same for the text, copy it from the old and past into the text box from the new. Then publish to a folder on the desktop and see if the buttons are correct. If so , delete the old page, rename the new one to the old name and publish.

  • Cannot Change Photo Caption in Lightroom 2.3

I am not able to get Lightroom 2.3 to change the caption of photos taken with a Sony A100.  The caption reads "Sony DSC."  All of my efforts to change this caption to something else have failed, including use of the "Save Metadata to File" command.  While the program initially reflects a change or deletion in the caption at first, when I navigate away from the photo and then return, it always reverts to "Sony DSC."  If someone can suggest a different approach or a workaround it would be much appreciated.  Note that this does not seem to be a problem with Photoshop Elements 6.  I have not yet tried to see if I can make this change in Bridge yet. Thanks.

I have given up trying to find a solution in LR.  It stubbornly overwrites "Sony DSC" on every photo I import and wipes out all changes I try to make in the caption field. I have not found a direct fix in LR, causing me nothing but frustration. But I have found a workaround which sounds complicated but is really quite simple.  The key is to import via the import utility in PS Bridge rather than with the LR import dialogue.  You wipe out the description field which contains "Sony DSC" in Bridge.  Then you synchronize the folder in LR.  Problem solved.  Here are the steps for Windows users.
Step 1:  Create a Custom Template in Bridge.  (a) Go to Tools - Create Metadata Template; (b) In the "Create Metadata Template" dialogue box: (1) under the "IPTC (IIM, legacy)" tab, place a check in the box next to "Description" and leave the field to the right blank (make sure no other boxes are checked); (2) under the "IPTC Core" tab, place a check in the box next to "Description" and leave the field to the right blank; (c) In the "Template Name" field replace "Untitled" with "Clear Sony DSC" (or whatever you want to call your template).
Step 2: Import your photos with the import tool in Bridge (the key is not to import with LR).
Step 3: (a) navigate to the newly imported file of images; (b) in Metadata view click on the top image in the folder and shift click on the last image in the folder to select all; (c) right click on one of the selected images and click on "File info . . .; (d) In the dialogue box that appears, click on the down arrow next to the "Import" button; (e) one of the options should be "Clear Sony DSC" (or whatever you named your template), click on that: (f) an "Import Options" dialogue box will appear, with three choices.  Choose the first of the three "Clear existing properties and replace with template properties."  (Note this will only overwrite "Sony DSC" in the description fields of the metadata and leave those fields blank and will not overwrite any other metadata.); (g) That will return you to the File Information dialogue box. Click the "OK" button at the bottom.  Bridge will now take some time overwriting the description fields in the metadata attached to your images.
Step 4:  Go to LR.  In the Develop module navigate to the folder in which this new folder of images was placed by Bridge.  In the top menu go to Library - Synchronize Folders. Lightroom will now capture this folder of images in your LR catalogue and the attached metadata but thankfully not the troublesome "Sony DSC", so you should be free to edit the caption field in LR.  Do not use "Import Photos from Disk at this seems to recreate the problem and results in duplicate images.
Let me know if this works for you.

  • Re-dating photos now does not re-date events. Bug?

    Hi,
I have been progressing through all my old scanned negatives, importing them into iPhoto '11, organising them into 'events', and then re-dating them using Photos>Batch change...
This had been working perfectly until today. The re-dated photos automatically placed the events they were within in their correct chronological order.
But today, even though I am re-dating ALL the photos within an event, (I have double-checked), the events themselves stubbornly remain with the date value of the original files, which is the date the negatives were originally scanned of course.
When I do the batch changes I make sure that 'Modify original files' is ticked.
Yesterday I accepted an update to iPhoto '11 version 9.1.2 (605). Could this have anything to do with my problem? Has anyone else got the same problem after updating to version 9.1.2?
If this is likely to be the cause, is there any way of reverting to my previous version?

As well as the re-dating problem in the 9.1.2 update, I also found that they have messed up the scroll facility somehow.
Whenever I scrolled through a view in 9.1.2, be it events or photos, instead of scrolling relatively smoothly the view seems to suddenly jump. I found myself getting completely lost...
So, what with the scrolling problem, and having to do the workaround for the re-dating problem, I'm very unimpressed with 9.1.2. The only plus point it had, (that I found, anyway), was that the single-photo zoom facility was extended to all views and not just within the 'edit' one. The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages as far as I'm concerned.
I have now reverted back to version 9.1.1, and I can now get on with the job in hand far more effectively.

  • IPhoto 09 not recognising locations for geo-tagged photos

I've been geotagging my photos in iPhoto for over a year now, using HoudahGeo. This works really well and integrates great with sites such as Flickr that support geo-tagged photos.
When I installed iPhoto 09, it only recognises about 30 photos out of several thousand as geo-tagged. These are mainly photos taken with my iPhone, but also some taken with my Sony camera and geotagged with HoudahGeo.
I've checked a sample of the ones it does not put in a location (all taken with the same Sony camera) and the Exif data is there with the correct latitude and longitude but iPhoto 09 sees these fields as blank when I do a Photos > Shows Extended Photo Info, the latitude and longitude fields are blank.
Anyone any ideas what I am doing wrong / how I get the photos to show on the map in iPhoto 09?

I usually import the photos direct to iPhoto from my camera and then use HoudahGeo to geo-tag the original copies of iPhoto in my library. Prior to iPhoto 9 this is not a big issue as it did not use the geo-tag information directly but with iPhoto 9 it's a big issue for users like me as I'd rather not have to export from the camera to a folder, geo-tag and then import to iPhoto 9 as it's messy to say the least.
As I noted - this will not work - iPhoto is a database and it keeps data about the photo in its database - as all database programs do - and changing the data elsewhere will not update the database
Anytime you apply modifications directly to the data in the iPhoto database you are risking corruption and it is recommended that you not ever modify the contents of the iPhoto library
I use an ATP Photo Finder - http://www.atpinc.com/p2-4a.php?sn=00000414 - which applies the Geocodeing data directly to my photos so when I import them they are complete - it simplifies my work flow a lot
Surely Apple will have thought of users like me who geo-tag using a GPS external to the camera and provided some easy method of re-reading the Exif data in the photos in real time?

  • IPhoto 11 - thumbnails and photos

I recently purchased the MacBook Retina Pro, and have successfully imported my iPhotos from my old MacBook (circa 2008) to the iPhoto 11, v. 9.5.
However, a few photos in some of my most recent events show up only as thumbnails. When I look at the photo info, they show up as sized less than 1MB, although all my other photos are 2+ MB. I have rebuilt the Library in the iPhoto Library Manager, and while the photos show up as normal size in the Manager, they still do not show up as full-size photos in iPhoto.
I am now in Day 6 of trying to figure this out, and feeling more than a little frustrated, primarily because everything else has come through okay, except for a handful of thumbnails, which stubbornly refuse to become real photos.
I have even tried copying them manually into iPhoto, from a USB stick, but that didn't work either.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Reverse geocoding suggestions data invisible for filename templates and plugins

    Hi,
Reverse geocoding are amazing, saves me a lot of work, but filename template I use seems don't work well with that feature.
With file naming scheme like this: "Country-City-Sequence # (001)" the result is "--001.jpg" instead of "France-Paris-001.jpg" and I have to confirm address for hundreds photos manually to see country and city information in filename.
Same situation in jf PicasaWeb plugin, when using caption scheme like this: "{Country}. {City}. {YYYY}. {Caption}." the result is ". . 2012. Example caption." instead of "France. Paris. 2012. Example caption."
It is possible for Lightroom to use address suggestions in this situations whenever address fields are empty?
Most important for me is to plugins see the address suggestions like normal (hard) data if address fields are empty.

On the face of it, Lr4's implementation of reverse geocoding is excellent, and it is when dealing with images taken at the same location. However, its handling of mixed locations is painful. In my case I use Jeffrey Friedl's plugin. It fully integrates with the Map module and allows you to reverse geocode without the limitations your currently experiencing. Very likely not what you wnated to read, but it does provided a painless solution to the problem you've identified.
