Stuck at grey screen after reboot

I seem to be stuck at the grey screen after a reboot of my server. Here are the symptoms and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced them before or has some idea of where to look:
1) Over the last couple of weeks, I've noticed the entire system freezing up for 10-20 seconds. The spinning pinwheel pops up and when my office is really quite, it sounds like either a fan is starting on the system or a hard drive is spinning up. Note that I've turned off all 'spin drives down when possible' in energy savings.
2) After the 10-20 seconds, a bunch of disk activity occurs and everything goes back to normal.
I've tried repairing permissions, checking for errors with the drive, etc. I've got two drives striped in Raid 0 (yes, the system is backed up--so I'm not worried about loosing data).
After a recent software update, I had to reboot it, and that's where it got stuck. Could be something there for some time, but my server usually runs for months at a time, unless an update requires a reboot.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Could you be more specific about what disks you used to boot with and exactly what programs you ran...
I cannot seem to get it to boot from the "Admin Tools" disk using the "D" key.
Also, when booting from the "Mac OS X Server" disk I can access Disk Utility, but do not see Raid Utility anywhwere.

  • Mac stuck at grey screen after rebooting to install windows 7

My mac refuses to start installing Windows 7 from a disc after I finish going through the "Install Windows 7" option of Bootcamp assistant. I have not got any special devices plugged in during the reboot, just a screen. What do I do with the Drivers on the flashdrive? Please someone help me.

Which specific model of iMac do you have? If the installer refused to install, then there must be a reason, such as lack of hard disk space, RAM, etc.
Did you eject the DVD, or is it still in the optical drive? If it's still in the drive, you should try booting from it by turning on the iMac and holding down the 'C' key until you see the spinning radian and see if it will boot from the DVD.

  • MacBook Pro stuck at grey screen after Yosemite upgrade

upgraded to yosemite yesterday. Reboot and stuck at grey screen(login in page) when i log in there is some codes thing at the left top corner of the screen. and then it reboots again. Which means I can never log onto the computer. what should I do

If you can't start up and log in in the usual way, try in safe mode.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Log in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. If you have only one account, you are the administrator.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
If you're able to log in, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

  • Stuck on grey screen after restore

Ok, I thought I was a Mac power user until today with over 20 years using them, but I'm stumped.
I installed Lion and had the now-famous "lost user account" issue. So I "added" my old account and everything seemed ok. But when I tried to use Aperture, it couldn't find my library, which is one of the main things I use the Mac for. Not finding any solutions after quite a bit of Internet research, I reluctantly did a full restore (from 2 days before Lion was launched). The restore took literally all of yesterday. When I woke up, I was greeted with a notice saying that the restore had been successful. Great, right?  Not so fast.
Since I hit restart, the machine has been stuck on the grey startup screen. (I'm typing this on my iPad)
I am about ready to break out my trusty copy of Disk Warrior, but before I do I thought I would ask the friendly folks here if you have any helpful suggestions so I don't make things worse. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Well, I got off the grey screen by doing a force shutdown and re-installing Snow Leopard, in case anyone else is having the same problem.  I'm now in the process of verifying that everything that was on my machine is still functional before I contemplate "upgrading" to Lion again.  Needless to say, I recommend regular backups.  I've been doing so for a long time and have never needed the backup until now -- I'm glad I have it!

  • MacBook Air stuck in grey screen after ML installation

    Hi everybody,
I have downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my MacBook Air (2011). After the installation the computer restarted and stuck in the grey loading screen, showing the apple logo and the turning wheel. I've left it alone for hours but nothing happens. This is still the case and I cannot find a way out.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    - Reload and reinstall ML via recovery mode (twice). Recovery mode shows me that 10.8 is installed, by the way
    - Restart without peripherals connected
    - Reset PRAM and NVRAM
    - Disconnect all cables and let the computer rest
    - Diagnose and repair hard drive (showed me a message that a Java-related group has a value of 80 but should be 0. Repair was "successful")
    - Safe boot (A bar appears in loading screen but disappears after it is about halfway full and I'm back in grey screen)
Unfortunately none of this worked. I have a Time Machine backup but it is located at the other end of the country (long story) and I can't access it easily.
Do you guys have any more ideas what else I could try? I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!

  • Computer froze...Now just grey screen after reboot

    Hi all,
After installing leopard on my machine (1.5 yr old Macbook), it has worked fine for me since dec. Today at work, my mail froze, but unlike usual, I couldnt even force quit. So i held down the power button to reboot.
It rebooted the first time with a ´´do not enter´´ symbol.
After that, it reboots BLANK GREY SCREEN.
eeK! Help, please! I am out of the US right now in a land of very few mac repair centers. Suggestions...

I was going to suggest you maybe experiencing the same slow boot up as me.
The screen appears first blank grey for almost 2 minutes then after a protracted blue screen for another 4 minutes I finally get to the log-in.
But it appears you may have received other technical advice.

  • Stuck on grey screen after update

    Hi,
I had my MacBook formatted about 2 weeks ago because of some software malfunction. I got the Snow Leopard installed and it was working perfectly fine until I had to update it.
I've updated the software from the Software Update pop-up and it would work fine but the latest update (October 9th) messed up my laptop.
It was an update for the SL software, two security updates, Java update and some other update I can't remember. All of them required a restart and I clicked to proceed.
The computer closes everything to go into restart and starts installing the software before it shuts down. Once it starts up, I get the start up chime but it stays stuck on the grey screen with the logo and the spinning wheel at the bottom. Its been stuck like this for a good 45 mins.
I shut it down by holding the power button and restarted it but it's stuck on the same screen as before.
    What's wrong with it?

    Start by trying this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you are still unable to start then reinstall Snow Leopard. This will not erase your hard drive or disturb your data.

  • Stuck at blue screen after reboot

    Hey,
I've just installed latest updates for my OS, restarted and I'm stuck at the blue screen (with the "loading" circle in the middle).

  • Power Mac G5 stuck on grey screen after swapping machine

    Greetings Friends,
I have changed my two HD out of one casing to another casing. Both HD worked fine, Both machines worked fine.
I have booted up the computer and now the computer sits on the Grey apple logo, with no loading wheel. After 2 mins, the fans kick into overdrive.
    It does not boot.
I have tried alt + command + P + R, but it does not work
I have tried holding ALT down on start up of the machine, which directs me to a menu where I can select either one of my HD or the start up disc that is in the optical drive. I have tried selecting all of these with no success.
I then tried to swap all the internals back to the original machine to see if it still works, and now the same problem exists. Grey screen with APPLE logo, no boot.
Could any body give me any help or direction. I love these machines and would like to continue working with one of them as soon as possible.
They are a G5, 4 GB ram, OSX 10.5.8 & the other drive is 10.5.1.
Both have been working well until today.
    Thanks.

Hello, first thing that comes to mind is a BAD HDD, does the other one boot with only the one original drive? Maybe I'm misunderstanding if it was added in the second slot or not!?

  • Stuck on grey screen after beginning windows installation

I went through the process of creating the partition on my drive through boot camp.  When I get to the final step in the boot camp installer, it says something to the effect of "insert windows install disc and click begin installation."  I follow those instructions, and the machine shuts down, boots up and gets stuck on a grey screen.  Alternatively, I tried powering down and booting from the Windows install disc.  This step brings me to the install screen, however when I'm at the point of choosing the drive I want to install the OS on, none of my partitions are listed.  In fact, the list is completely blank.  Does anyone know how to remedy this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • HT2470 Grey screen after reboot and keychain password problems..

It's hard to believe I have only had my iMac 1 week and already I have managed to lock myself out of my user account and now after following online advice to unlock the keychain within utilities, I have a grey screen and spinning pointer. I remember deleting something from the keychain but now I can't even log on?
Is there anyway I can resolve this myself ( very little technical experience) or will Apple phone support be my best option?  Any answers would be greatly appreciated.............. thanks in advance.

You paid for 90 days of phone support. Might as well use it.

  • PB 1.5Ghz stuck at grey screen after 10.5.3 update

Hi, I updated my Powerbook to 10.5.3 yesterday only to come back and find it permanently stuck at the grey screen with the Apple logo. It won't go past this screen. It just stays there forever, and it does not give me any kernel panics. I've read that some others are experiencing this same problem and have archived and installed.
Unfortunately, my friend bought a multi-user Leopard license and gave one to me, but he still has the Leopard disc. What is the best way to resolve this issue? Is there any way to solve this update issue without the disc? Or am I just going to have to wait for him to mail it? Thanks for any help.

  • I accidently put vr files in trash but did not delete, now stuck on grey screen after battery dying! Help

I am not very tech savvy but recently used a program that tells you what programs and files are using up large amounts of space on your computer I think it was called disc utility maybe. I deleted a whole bunch of things but accidently deleted a folder called vr, I realised I made a mistake and went to remove it from the trash when my laptop died, now it won't turn on past the grey screen with the apple logo!
I didn't delete the files they are just sitting in the trash. Is there anything I am able to do? I don't have any install discs or anything or wifi at my house or have any computer knowledge really. Please help!

Thank you! But do you think that a defective cable would cause it to not boot the cd now as well as the HD errors?
Also, this is kind of embarrassing, but if my trackpad happened to be broken to where I couldn't click it (broke a while back, but I use an external mouse so it never really bothered me) can I hold down the mouse button on my external mouse at startup to eject the cd or does it have to be the trackpad. If not, is there another way I can eject the cd?
    Thanks again!
