  • I just bought an iPhone that is stuck on the setup screen. I have Tmobile and want to know if I should unlock my phone first or get a micro sim card from Tmobile

My iPhone 4 is stuck on the setup screen. I just bought it tonight and plan to use it on Tmobile but it is not unlocked yet. I was wondering if I should unlock the phone first or get my SIM card situation figured out with Tmobile first. Thanks for any help.

You'll have to get the SIM card first, you can't set it up without a supported SIM.

  • Oracle Linux 6 - stuck on Welcome Setup Screen, black screen on CTRL+ALT+F*

    Oracle Linux 6 DVD x64.
Installed fine. I selected gnome for UI + all dev packages as I will be doing some dev work on the box.
After install it boots okay and the Welcome setup screen shows up. It allows me to setup connection to ULN, create a user, enable kdump etc. These functions work fine, but right after I finish setting it all up (i.e. the last setting I see is the kdump enable/disable screen), the box goes into limbo state after pressing [Finish] button.
The screen turns black and that's it.
Also when I tried to switch from the Welcome setup screen to a terminal mode, i.e. by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (tried ...+F2 also) the box gets stuck too. There is no way to go back to the X session, i.e. CTRL+ALT+F6 (F7, F8). It is just stuck on the black screen.
    Here's some specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P8H67-M Pro (with B3 revision of Sandy Bridge)
    CPU: Intel I5-2500 (VPRO) (BX80623I52500)
Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB (compatible with m/b + run memtest86 for hours without error)
Video: using built in Intel HD (could this be the issue?)
After re-boot I'm back to Welcome setup screen.
    Notes:
    1. Boots fine if 'singleuser' is appended to the kernel boot line in GRUB, but that's not the point. I would like to run UI.
    2. I have tried removing 'rhgb' and 'quiet' kernel boot parameters to no avail. I have actually stripped the kernel boot line in GRUB down to 'ro' and that would not help either.
    3. Ubuntu 10.10 x64 runs fine.
    4. Windows 7 x64 runs fine.

You may have a hardware or system bios issue in combination with the existing drivers. Have you checked the vendors home page for your system? What clues exit in the log files in /var/log?
It sounds like you are using a Latop. Oracle Linux, like RHEL is not designed for desktop and mobile computers. Installation success will depend on your hardware compatibility, but you will very likely be missing appropriate drivers for wireless, video and power management.
If Enterprise Linux is a requirement and you are not using it as the primary OS, or if the computer hardware lacks support, how about installing Oracle Virtualbox and install Linux as a guest OS - I'm pretty sure this should work.

  • I'm stuck on the gray screen on start up

Tried all the tips I can find but no joy. Able to boot in safe mode but nothing else. Can't use Lion Recovery and unable install Snow Leopard from disk as it gets stuck on the gray screen again. Any suggestions?

It appears you may have a bad Recovery HD partition. By any chance did you create a USB Recovery HD for emergency uses? If not, then I think you may have to first reinstall Snow Leopard then re-download and install Lion. Since you can boot into safe mode you can create a backup of your files because reinstalling Snow Leopard requires erasing the drive:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Boot sequence stuck at wireless setup- cannot boot past grey screen

I have a MBP here that is failing to boot to a login screen. Booting into verbose mode get me to:
    ...[usual bootup log]...
    wlEvent: en1 en1 Link UP virtIf = 0
    AirPort: Link Up on en1
    en1: BSSID changed to e0:46:9a:56:73:9d
AirPort: RSN handshake complete on en1
In the course of the dozen or so verbose boots I've done this afternoon, this is the unfailing result. RSN handshake, system halts. In fact I have the computer next to me frozen at this screen. It's been about 30 minutes.
Here is some info about the computer: 15" MBP running 10.7.5, stock Apple RAM installed, plugged in, HDD shows normal status, wifi and everything else appeared to work normally earlier today.
Here is what I have tried:
    reset smc
    reset nvram
ran apple hardware test off of CD
ran fsck from single user mode
ran disk utilities (permissions and repair) from both Apple install dvd and recovery partition
Safe boot hangs at the loading screen the same way a normal boot hangs. I cannot access safe mode to turn wifi off (this is what I suspect needs to be done).
I've googled the heck out of every aspect of this problem and I'm still not finding anything relevant. I'd appreciate any help you might have with this problem.

If you don't have a backup of your data of the machine.
Hold Command R and boot into RecoveryHD and use Disk Utlity to format a blank powered external drive 1 Partition, Option: GUID and OS X Extended journaled as the format. Quit.
Install OS X onto the extenral drive, Quit and Reboot holding the option/alt key down (wired or built in keyboard) and boot off the external drive.
Grab a copy of your folders off the internal drive.
Reboot and use command r again and reinstall OS X over itself on the internal MacintoshHD partition and see if that resolves your issue.

  • Airport Extreme card installed, eMac stuck on gray Apple screen at start-up

I just installed an Airport Extreme card on my eMac (USB 2.0). When I try to boot, it gets stuck on the gray Apple screen, with the spinning gray "spokes." The card is pushed as far as it will go into the slot, and the antenna is all the way in as well. When I take the card out, the computer boots up fine. I tried installing the software first, but it doesn't appear to be installed after it does the required restart for new software. I'm not sure if I have the software already...
At any rate, the biggest issue is that it won't boot past the gray screen. Any thoughts? (I have a version of Tiger, though I'm not sure exactly which because I'm sick of the un/install process at the moment, and am staring at the gray screen.)

Hi, I have a 1GHz eMac ATI and had a problem installing my Airport Extreme card as well. It would boot fine, but the card would not connect. It turned out that the card was not seated properly and maybe this is something for you to look at.
If you look at the Airport slot with the card and cover removed you will see the end of a black plastic guide bar on the right of the slot when viewed from the front of the machine. (Assuming the ATI eMac and USB 2.0 are the same in this regard) When the card and the aerial are fully seated home, the silver top of the aerial plug should be just about level with the front end of the black plastic bar, just a whisker or 2 sticking out. If it is more than this (more than say 1-2mm - 1/16th inch) then your card is not far enough in to be connected properly. Believe me I found this out through trial and error and there is not much difference between the right position and not.
It is not just a matter of pushing harder, you need to wiggle it slightly up and down and push firmly with 2 fingers, one on each side so that the force is evenly distributed. Mine needed just a smidgeon more force than what it took to slide the machine back - try it a little bit at a time. Put it up against a wall so it doesn't slide back, but don't apply excessive force. Part of the problem is that is hard to get your fingers in there to do the job.
    Hope this helps.

  • My MacBook is stuck on a white screen at start up

I have a ~2 yr old 13" MacBook which had frozen on a black screen with the cursor showing and would not respond. After turning it off, I hear the statup tone and get a white screen and that's it. I,ve tried the different strat up techniques listed in the manual to no effect.

See this Apple note for steps to take.

When you get to the screen shown on the page, select Disk Utility, then Continue.
In DU, select the hard drive on the left, the First Aid tab on the right, and click Repair Disk.
If the repair works, quit DU and restart.

  • Stuck on gray startup screen, no apple logo - help?!

My Powerbook chimes when I turn it on, then goes to the gray screen, but sits there, does not move forward, no apple logo, no spinning circle, no beachball, nothing. I can hold the power button to turn it off, again to turn it back on, etc., but nothing else. I tried starting in safe mode, same exact result. Tried starting from the leopard install dvd, still nothing. The DVD drive makes the noises as if it's reading the disc, but the computer does not get past the gray screen, and now I can't even get the disc out. Any recommendations??

Jason: Your present situation is not clear from your posts. Do you still have an installer DVD stuck in your optical drive? When you power up the machine while holding down the "c" key with the installer DVD in the drive, does the machine start up? If not, exactly what does happen?
Presumably there is an OS installed on your hard drive, because if there weren't, you would never have been able to get onto Hotmail. Does the Powerbook start up from its hard drive when no installer disc is in the optical drive? If not, exactly what does happen?

Unfortunately, there are many reasons why the PSE Organizer might crash, and often it is hard to diagnose quickly the reason for the crash.   Here are some steps you can take to try to fix the problem:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Troubleshooting_Organizer_ crashes
If you had uploaded to one of the online services such as SmugMug or Kodak in your last Organizer session that didn't crash, start with step 7.  But regardless, work through all the steps methodically.

  • Blackberry stuck on Application Permission screen...anyone help?

So my Blackberry is stuck on the "Application Permissions" screen.  I have tried a battery pull and it does nothing.  I can not use my phone for anything as of now.  I have Verzion Wirless as my carrier.  Will have to take the phone to a Verzion store or can i fix it somehow?

I had this problem - even the shop where I got the phone was useless!  But eventually found the solution here:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Tour-9630/My-BB-Tour-is-frozen/m-p/575739/highligh...
If the link doesn't work, the solution is below:
Remove the battery.  Then insert the battery while holding the back key (right of the trackball) while the device starts up.  When you see the boot screen you can release the button.  That should boot the device in safe mode.  If it boots up, remove the app that is causing the 'blockage'.
Once you get back out of safe mode, I've found that the phone has reset some of its settings to factory default, like the menus and the screen theme, but at least all the data seems to still be there AND you can now use your phone again!!!
    Good luck

  • Black Screens On Start Up - HELP!

    Hi All,
On startup, I am first getting a question mark in the folder (old OS 9), then after thinking for a bit, I get the grey screen and apple as expected, then the screen goes black (unexpected), then I get the blue screen with the normal rectangle and progress bar that OSX is loading, then the screen goes black again and then goes away and brings me to my desktop with all icons as they should be, whew.
I am running 10.4.10, have 1.5GB RAM, a G4 Quicksilver, recently had some kind of Kernel panic upon startup, but only got a black box without any writing in it.
I have a backup drive that is a mirror to my main boot drive and I believe my system got confused after a hard crash, as to which drive it should use. I straightened that out in Startup Disc prefs, then
I zapped the PRAM and got going again, rebuilt the directory with DiskWarrior and now I'm here, still with the question mark and this new black screen thing.
Anyone hear of this black screen thing before? And what it means and how to remedy it?
    Thanks for anyone's help.
    Steven
    G4 Quicksilver 867 mhz Mac OS X (10.4.10) 1.5 GB RAM

Firmware updates can and can't be good.
the archive feature will allow you to reinstall the OS X (using you OS X disk this is) without effecting the applications folder or the users folder. To use this option boot off the Install disk and in the installation window where you select what disk to install OS X onto there will be a options button. Click this and there will be a few extra options, one being archive and reinstall. If this helps you then you will have saved time because you would have repaired the system and will not need to reinstall and applications. (in saying that somtimes some applications need to be reinstalled, Photoshop CS2 is one of them)
Additionally all of your application preference files will still be on the system. A folder will also be created on your Hard drive called 'Previous system' This folder will be fairly large so if you don't need anything from the previous system then delete it. (my rule is to wait for a fews days and iff i don't touch it then to delte it)
So if you want a strategy than:
Run ONYX - clean the kernal cache (i think that there is an automated section that will do a whole heap of stuff including this)
    Forget the PRAM
    Forget the Firmware reset
If the issue is not solved then archive and reinstall.
If the issue is still not solved then erase and start from scratch.
Just a note... i know that the ? bothers you but if this still occurs after ONYX or the archive and reinstall, test the machine for a few days and see if the kernal panic occurs again. If there is no more kernal panics then i think that there is a few easy fixes to get rid of the ? on startup

  • Alu iMac stuck in SLEEP / Blank screen problem! Please Help!

I have a 24" 2.4GHz Alu iMac. I usually sleep my computer quite often at night instead of a full shutdown (although I make sure I shutdown completely a couple of times a week).
Recently I have gone to wake my iMac up in the morning only to get no response from keyboard / mouse. Upon a closer look I have realized that the imac is actually awake as I can hear the fans running, so it has woken by itself at some point during the night even though there is nothing on screen and no response to keyboard/mouse. I have then had to force it to shut down, something I hate having to do.
I've verified and repaired disk permissions, verified and repaired disk, reset the SMC, all without any change. There are external drives plugged in to firewire ports but none of these are on when problem happens. I have tried unplugging the drives when the imac is not responsive but it still fails to "wake". Although I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, they have full battery power and during short periods of sleep wake the imac up with no problems, it seems it's the long overnight periods that causes the problem. Is the time of night a factor perhaps? I herd something about imacs doing automatic maintenance at 4 in the morning or something? As I said before I have always slept my imac for long periods without problems, this is a recent thing the happened suddenly, perhaps coinciding with an update, I'm not sure.
I have created a new post as I am sure the iMac is not technically "sleeping" at the point of no response, so I don't want to it to get confused with potentially another issue of imacs not waking from sleep (although some of the people experiencing sleep problems may have imacs doing what mine is without realizing!).
Has anyone else experienced the above?
    Thanks guys.

    HI Joey,
    Try resetting the PRAM/VRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
*"Is the time of night a factor perhaps? I herd something about imacs doing automatic maintenance at 4 in the morning or something? "*
Yes, your iMac if turned on will run "cron" tasks (maintenance), but it can run while the computer is sleeping. Here's the schedule for it. *"These tasks are scheduled for 03:15 to 05:30 in your computer's local time zone. "* More info here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2319?viewlocale=en_US
Check System Preferences/EnergySaver and click the Sleep tab. Click the Schedule tab and make sure you don't have a startup / wake scheduled.
*"Although I have a wireless keyboard and mouse, they have full battery power and during short periods of sleep wake the imac up with no problems,"*
Check System Preferences/Bluetooth. Click the Advanced tab. Do you have the; Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer selected?
Check System Preferences/Security and click the General tab. Do you have the; Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver selected?

  • White screen at start up --- HELP!!

Today my macbook was working just fine. I used it all day. I was coming home from school (and had it inside it's case inside my bag) and someone cut me off while I was driving. My bag fell from the passengers seat of the car onto the floor.
When I went to turn it on when I got home I got a white screen. I took out the battery and tried to restart it and got the same thing. I read on here that putting in the install disc could help diagnose the problem but now the disc won't eject.
Also when I shut it down it goes straight to the black screen right when I hit the power button then you can hear the hard drive making noise for a few seconds after that.
I do have the apple care plan, which is fine, but I am concerned about losing all of the photos on my hard drive. I really don't think this could affect my hard drive and I'm hoping it's something else.
    Help?

Do you own a second Mac? Even without a working screen, you could put the MB in Firewire target mode and connect it to another Mac by Firewire and move all your sensitive data.
