  • My Macbookpro 2012 won't turn on, stuck on grey screen, logo and loading bar

It is stuck on the grey screen with the logo and the loading bar, which won't pass after 30%. If i turn it on, it shows it up again but as it reaches 33% it shuts off by itself. Please, help me. I've been searching online for resolutions but there seems to be a wide variety of ways. I'm not sure which to preform as I am scared to make a mistake and accidentally make it worse. If anyone had this problem before, is there any way to fix it without re-installing stuff? Or is there a easy an safe way to preform it? Thanks.

I have a 2011 MacBookPro and I was using iPhoto a couple of days ago when I received a software update message.  I clicked OK (as the message assured me that I could continue to use my computer while updating took place).  After a while I got a meesage that iPhoto needed to be closed for the software updates to be completed, but I continued working with the intention of closing it soon.  After about another minute, the screen split into two panes (one third/two thirds split) and then froze.  Hard shutdown didn't resolve the problem and then the screen went black.  Re-starting gave me a grey screen and no functionality at all.
Repeated attempts to re-boot made no difference so I followed various peoples' suggestions on-line (using another computer).  Even the Safe Mode boot (Power button plus Shift) wouldn't work, so I trekked to an Apple store to see a genius, but was told there was a two hour wait.  I gave up and came back, and tried Safe Mode starting again.  This time it worked (why!?) and I got into the MBP, but with the vertical screen striping and limited functionality.  I tried the Safe Mode boot many times, all with the same result, but eventually I also got a message about iPhoto needing the library to be repaired.  I did this (took about 30 minutes).  Having done this, it still wouldn't start in normal mode, so I gave up for the evening.  This morning I thought I would try once more before booking a Genius Bar slot - and all was working OK (although slightly slower than normal)!!  What changed overnight I have no idea but the lesson seems to be - keep trying Safe Mode booting until it clears - very scientific!

Thanks Shootist007, by blockd files I mean files that I have changed to blocked and when I tried to move then for the first time, I had to unblock again. I am trying to backup my pictures, my songs and other files like word documents and excel tables. First I put all of them as blocked, what caused the first problems on trying to move them. Then, I've unchecked the block option and if I try to move one by one, there is no problem. The issue is to move all together, because it gets stuck in the preparing to copy files step. Anyway, if I cannot do all by once, I'll do it one by one, event though that was not suposed to happen if we are talking about technology, right? Anyway, I thank you again for trying to help me!

  • MacBookPro stuck on load screen/won't start

I was updating iTunes this morning but had to turn my MacBookPro off before it could finish. Now it is stuck on the apple screen with the cog loading. I have tried starting in safe mode and also tried cmd option p r but to no avail. Can anybody help me?
    Thanks

I am having the same problem! I downloaded several updates including a update for intel macbook pros which could not install because of an error. It asked for a restart and said i could retry installing the update that did not take when it tried to shutdown it just went to a blank desktop for much longer than it should. I tried force quitting and other key combos which had no affect- so i turned it off manually by holding the power key. when i restarted it just stayed on the gray screen for ever and got extremely HOT! I turned it off again/waited until cool and tried starting in safe mode by holding shift. It did not work. just stayed on the gray screen with the apple and the spiny thing again. I then tried booting with the OSX disc the software installation came up and I used the disc utility like suggested. I checked the permissions which showed several to be wrong, so i repaired them by using the permissions repair. I quit the install disc software and chose to restart. IT DID NOT WORK

Brand new MacBookPro 13" , Stuck at White Screen with gray apple and spinning gear.
This MBP apparently didn't come with a DVD and safe mode ( holding shift at boot up ) isn't working.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Call AppleCare. You should not be having problems with a brand-new machine.

  • Why is Finder (desktop) getting stuck on MacBookPro?

I have OSX version 10.7.4 and my desktop keeps freezing while I am moving things from folder to folder. My browser will work, but nothing on my desktop, the wheel just keeps spinning. I have to shut the computer off and then have trouble restarting. It takes several tries to get it to load correctly.... what's going on here?

I have the same problem but it is with my iMac 3.4GHz Intel Core i7 (27 inch Mid-2011), and I think I have traced it to my use of External Seagate USB 3.0 drives.  Obviously I am not using USB 3.0 since it's not available on this iMac, but my computer will work fine for days when they are not hooked up, but if I do hook them up, at random points Finder will freeze when I try to access the disks.  I can't reliably copy between the external disks (large files) without having Finder freeze.  Thinking it might be my USB hub, I plugged both drives directly into the back of the iMac and still have the same problem.  HOWEVER, if I plug the two drives into my old MacBookPro (17-inch, Early 2008), things work just fine!  I have an External LaCie and an old SimpleTech that run 100% of the time with no problem.  I'm going to blame the Seagates and their 3.0 implementation with the new iMac, but clearly there's something amiss with the iMac.  (Of course I'm running the same OS X version 10.7.4)  Wish there would be some sort of update to fix this, but of course it's a bear to reproduce, and there are no logs available to send (other than the console logs), so not sure what can be done...  Hope someone is "listening" and can shed some light.

  • HT2810 MacBookPro 10.9 photo icon stuck on desktop (one on top of any window opened).  Doesn't respond to any commands and can't be moved or deleted.  Computer acts like they are not there.  How do I get rid of them?

2 photo icons stuck on desktop. One stays on top any window opened. Do not respond to any comands, can't delete or move. Computer acts like they aren't there.  How do I get rid of?

Thanks...I'm a dunce.  I shut down again, and that did solve the problem.  Thanks for your help.

  • I seem to be "stuck" downloading QuickTime. I'm still less than 1/10 on "Configuring Instillation" on my MacBookPro.

I've repeatedly tried to download QuickTIme on my MacBook Pro.  It seems to be stuck on "Configuring Instillation".....showing less than 1/10 on the status bar.  I don't know what to do.  I'm incredibly challenged when it comes to these things.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Paul cb.  I get the same error message (9), which relates to an apparent dropping of the USB connection.  I have now tried 3 different usb cables on 2 different mac's, same result.
Reading as much as I can understand, there appears to be a dependance on an SHSH signature file. I have never Jailbroken any of my apple hardware, but there is much information that can be gleaned from the associated writings.
I am not a genius my any means, but it appears as though (iMhO) that somehow the files (or some of them) on the iPad have become corrupted and the all important SHSH file is not there. This causes iTunes to have no reference point for restoring the iPad.  Also, it is not possible to force a new firmware (Option click restore in itunes) without an SHSH file, this results in an error that says that the iPad is not eligible for this version ...  or something like that.
MY problem is that in Dubai we do not have an Apple Genius bar and that you guys and gals are the closest I will get to an Apple Genius.  The iPad was purchased for me in the States when my daughter was visting there so, I am pretty much sitting on a brick right now ...  (my wife has annexed my iPad 2 until I can fix her iPad 1 ....  sighs).
Unless there are any other tactics that you guys can suggest (without Jailbreaking) then I think I may be at the end of the road ..
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
    Best Regards

  • Brand new MacBookPro acting really weird. It's stuck i think

So my brand new Mac Book Pro (30 days old) recently started to act really weird. I have this audio software called Pro Tools 10 and 2-3 days ago it started to crash it every time i open up a Virtual Plug-in on a track. I thought that this was the only problem with my computer but I'm noticing new weird things every day.
When i shut down my computer or restart it it always turns on with the File Sharing window open.. I was experimenting with in the File Sharing window like 3 days ago but now it opens every time I start my computer.  When I click on the System Preferences the File Sharing window always opens up. I have to click ,,Show All'' to see the menu for System Preferences.
When i open up Safari the same 3 tabs always reloads. This was some websites i looked at 2-3 days ago but it always reloads. Even if I quit Safari it reloads when i open it up again.
I deleted a application from my computer and it's shortcut from the DOCK but everytime i start up my computer it appears there (just a question mark instead of the shortcut)
It's like my computer is stuck. Stuck in the day i did all these things and it hasn't coped with the things I've done since then.
I've tried to un-click the ,, Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps'' in the System Preferences/General but as soon as I close the window it clicks itself again. I reset safari but that won't do it ether.
I've updated all my software and I'm now currently running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on MacBook Pro 15' i7 16gb RAM. I upgraded my RAM like 15 days ago so I don't think that's the problem. I've done ,,remember tests on it and it passed all the tests.
So what could be wrong with my computer ? What could be making her behave so weird ? Should I delete my user account and create a new one ? Should I install Mountain Lion instead of the version I already have ?

  • MacBookPro stuck on grey screen with Apple Logo and spinning wheel - help !

I was using my MBP when I dropped an empty folder into the trash and then went to empty the trash, suddenly everything went slow, i tried closing the windows and any applications but the beachball thing was spinning round on everything I was trying to close, I went to restart the computer the normal way (top left) but that had a spinning beachball so i switched it off with the power button. Now when it starts up it does the usual bong noise, shows the apple sign and the loadng circle but nothing happens after. I have tried the Pram reset thing but to no avail - I need help please !!

This typically means critical system files were damaged from the abnormal shutdown. It's possible that repairing the drive may fix the problem (but may not.) See the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't work then you will need to reinstall OS X. You may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • My Keynote does not work on my MacBook Pro with OsX Mavericks. It opens though, but then is stuck, menu does not react. What to do?

I have Keynote 6.1 and run it on a MacBookPro with OsX Mavericks. I can start Keynote, but I cant access the menu, it is stuck. What to do?

Try this repair for Keynote 6.2,  ensure you complete all the tasks and in the order shown:
1  delete all the iWork applications if you have them, not just Keynote, using Appcleaner from Mac Update, its a freeware application
2  restart the Mac;   Apple menu > restart
3  immediately after the start chime,  press the shift key until you see the Apple symbol.
let it fully boot up,  it will take longer as the OS is repairing the drive
4  when fully booted, go to Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility; click on the boot drive  then First Aid tab and      click  repair disc permissions
5  when complete, restart the Mac normally
6  install Keynote from the Mac App Store, it will be updated to the latest verion which is 6.2

I insert it into the mac, but the OS cannot load the disc and the disc cannot be ejected even i pressed the "eject" button.

This happened to a family members macbookpro. A mini-cd inserted, couldn't be mounted or ejected by the drive.
I cut a rectangle from a cereal box about two inches wide and 6 inches long. Abour an inch and half from one end in the middle I cut a notch and bent it down a little.

A few days after this happened I was in BestBuy and an Apple rep was there displaying new Apple products. I asked him about it and he said they have a tool that ***** it out.
