Stuck iMac during 10.6.2 to 10.6.8 OS combo update

Dear community,
I recently had to wipe out an iMac HDD and reinstall the OS. The install DVD contained OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I wished to upgrade to Mavericks (10.9) by doing an intermediate update to 10.6.8, as required by the new OS installer.
After a successful disk erase & OS installation from DVD, I tried to update the OS by using the 10.6.8 Combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399, which was located on an external hard drive. Just before finishing the update, the screen went black and there was no way to recover the system. Fan and internal HDD were both spinning, so the system was stuck for an unknown reason.
After waiting for 15 minutes, I decided to switch off the computer manually with the power button, and since then the iMac won't boot any more. Here's a list of what I tried:
- Boot from cd ("C" during startup): impossible, another disc is currently in the drive, and can't eject it
- Safe mode: won't load in 30 minutes, I guess it won't load at all
- Reset NVRAM: no effect
- Single user mode:
      - "fsck -fy": no effect, volume is OK;
      - reinstalling the updates from within su mode "softwareupdate -i -a" (hoping to reinstall it and get rid of the possible crap): impossible, there is no network connection.
Any help would be very welcome

Thanks for the hint, I managed to eject the disc holding the mouse click and inserted the OS DVD.
This doesn't solve the problem though, I can't boot from it (holding "C" has no effect, nor has the "Alt" key).
Reading the verbose boot output, things seem pretty bad:
jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal: from some_decimal: to some_other_decimal (joffset some_hexadecimal)
jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal done.
Maybe broken filesystem, but I can't explain why external boot mode doesn't work…

  • IMac not waking up from sleep after 10.6.6 combo update

Prior to update everything working fine, permissions repaired, file structures sound, no issues. After update, iMac won't wake up properly from sleep. Moving mouse (either Bluetooth or wired) has no reaction. Hitting key on keyboard (Apple aluminum extended wired keyboard) causes desktop screen to appear, but the spinning gear/pinwheel appears in screen center, and continues to spin. This continues and continues, no reponse from keyboard/mouse. Only work around has been to force quit computer and reboot. Problem repeats next time computer goes to sleep. Repairing permissions has not effect on issue, but now list of permissions getting repaired is very lengthy. Causes? Solutions?

    Macster,
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job. If you own one, run it first.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Then, Try downloading the 10.6.6 Combo update, from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.

  • IMac stuck "restarting" during 10.9.2 update

During my 10.9.2 update, my imac is stuck "Restarting" for one hour.  I'm going to let it sit a bit longer, anyone else come across this?
I just came across this thread, two similar experiences.

    @Erik
    I wonder 'try'?
Why do you say 'try', whats this.
In my opinion trying is not something you do every day with apple updates, right.
I mean, apple update is not something to doubt about, 'apple' hello!
Is there a difference in the regular App store OTA update and this combo update?
I had about the same issues here, that LS mentioned these connection attempts.
I had weird internet failing issues in my LAN at home, even other devices where blocked from internet, really weird. Pulled modem power several times, internet was back for a while, but after few minutes of slow browsing internet was down again. LAN itself seem to be in order, could still connect to other media on LAN, but not to WAN. Did disconnect power of modem routine again, internet up...
Even when connection to outside was down (several devices) I was able to get from WAN to LAN by means of my cell phone, data connection, port forwarding at home... So it seemed all outgoing traffic was broken somehow..
Why would an official update connect with facebook twitter etc, this is the main question here I think.
So I was a bit desperate and couldn't pinpoint the internet outages.
This all was just after the 10.9.2 ota update.
I followed your 'try' advice, now it seems my MBA doesn't break my internet connection anymore.
Thanks, it 'behaves' correctly I think, it needs some time still, just did the update.
Power comes with knowledge, so why the trying, is this experience, your gut, or something in higher places, what?
    Cheers I.

  • IMac G3 DV 400 "not acceptable to OSX 10.4.3 Updater?

I have been resurrecting a friends G3 slot loading iMac and have just hit a strange hitch - having fixed the firmware update problem, installed a gigabyte of RAM, installed OSX 10.4, installed Photoshop and Internet access (via Safari) the machine has been going really well; faster than when it ran OS 8.6!
It still has a small HD - just 9.5 gigs but it has 2.8 gigs still free and BEFORE I install a newer, larger drive I thought I would update to 10.4.3. at least, but when I tried, having downloaded the 98 Mbs standalone updater (I usually always get the Combo but 118 Mbs is huge when stuck with an internal modem) I was very surprised that I cannot install it "You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update" is what it says.
Is this something to do with the computer, or the intemall drive or something else?

    Hi philip!
You can't use the smaller Delta update to go from 10.4.0 to 10.4.3.
The smaller Delta Update installer updates Mac OS X 10.4.2 to 10.4.3.
The Combo Update installer updates Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, or 10.4.2 to 10.4.3.
The available space on the HD may also be insufficient.
    Enough disk space
Make sure you have enough disk space. Even small application or system updates may require a few hundred megabytes of space to complete the optimization phase of the installation. Mac OS X itself may require 3.0 GB of free space, or more, depending on the version and installation options you select.
    Good Luck!

  • 10.6.7 Combo Update = Dead iMac

I have posted this in the iMac category but it probably belongs here.
After a failed Software Update of 10.6.7 on a 20" 2007 silver iMac (it failed to reboot fully and was stuck in a loop with a blue screen), I used an install disk to re-install SL back to 10.6.0. All good I thought and everything was working fine, so I downloaded the .7 combo update and installed. Same thing after restart - stuck in a loop with a blue screen. Once again forced shutdown, pressed power button again and nothing happened. No power, no sound, no chime. The iMac is dead this time. I have reset SMC etc but no help.
I'm hoping someone else is having a similar problem because when I take it to the Apple Store they will not believe a software update could cause this.

Sounds like you may have a permissions issue.  The proper way to install a major update is to first repair disk permissions, reboot, do the update, reboot, then do another repair of the disk permissions.  If the list of items being repaired shows anything other than java items then rerun it again until that's all you have (for some reason the java run time system always gives a permission error).
I would try to start the unit from the dvd, run disk utility and see if the drive shows up, if it doesn't then your drive is dead and you need to go to the Apple store anyway.  If it does show up, select the volume and run "repair disk".  If that is clean, then do a repair permissions.  If it can't be made clean, then you may need to erase the drive and start all over.

  • HT201364 I'm currently running OS-10.6.8 on my IMAC with an Intel Core 2 duo and would like to update to at lease 10.7

I'm currently running OS-10.6.8 on my IMAC with an Intel Core 2 duo and would like to update to at lease 10.7. Can this be done and if so how?

Only if you cannot upgrade to Mavericks.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • IMac G4 hangs at apple logo screen after 10.5.8 update

Hello, thanks for any help you can provide with this problem.
Machine is iMac G4 flat panel. Did an erase and install of Leopard over firewire from iMac G5. Immediately copied 10.5.8 combo update I'd downloaded earlier from the G5 and ran it on the G4. The update completed successfully, albeit slowly, and I clicked restart. After a long wait at blank desktop, machine rebooted on its own. It got as far as the Apple logo screen with spinner spinning, and then it hung. I didn't want to jump to conclusions that it was indeed frozen, so I let it sit there and spin for at least 2 hours. Even for an old G4 this seemed like a bit much, so I forced it to power off and tried again. Still hangs.
At this point I figure something went wrong with the update, so I did another erase and install of virgin Leopard over firewire from the same G5. Repeated update process. It once again completed successfully, I clicked restart, it paused, then rebooted on its own again. To my great dismay, it once again hung at the spinny spinner Apple logo screen.
Now, this is the fourth G4 machine I've done this on in the last week, and the other three are running normally. 1 was another iMac G4, the other 2 were eMac G4's.
    Any suggestions?

Interestingly, I brought the G4 into work today and connected it to the G5 with FireWire and turned both on. For some reason (I'm not Mac Pro here, so this might be obvious to some of you) the G5 booted from the G4's HDD and the system started up just fine. I ran repair permissions on the G4's HDD and restarted it. It now boots up fine. Not sure if it was the repairing permissions that fixed it or booting the OS on a different machine. Either way, problem is resolved. Thanks for your input.
    Edit: Fixed typo

  • 20 inch Aluminum iMac crashes after installing Mac OS X Combo Update 10.5.6

I have a school lab with 22 of the new 20 inch Aluminum iMacs. They all have been having a problem with crashing after someone logs onto my network server, which is still running the 10.4 Tiger version of the Apple server. They run fine if you boot up and log on as a local user, and they seem to run fine when you boot up and log on to with a server account, but when you log off from the server, about five seconds later while the aurora screen is still showing, they crash and give you the Apple version of the "blue screen of death."
I was told that the fix was to download the combo update separately from the Apple website and use that to reinstall and update the operating system.
I downloaded and tried installing with a 10.5.6.dmg file and a 10.5.6.dmg.smi file, but they both crashed.
Where can I find the "fixed" version of this update or is there some other fix?
I have tested this on 9 or 10 different systems.
The first file was MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg, which is a disk image file that is 668.8 MB or 684,774 KB.
I looked in the discussion groups on the Apple web site and found some discussions for problems that seemed similar to, but not quite the same as my own. They led me to a file MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg.smi, which a self mounting image file that is also 668.8 MB. I tried it and got the same result.
I can install my dvd, which gives me 10.5.1, which will log off and reboot correctly.
I can then install several miscellaneous upgrades:
    Pro Apps Update 2006-02 V1.0
    AirPort Utility V5.3.2
    Remote Desktop Client V3.2.2
    QuickTime V7.6
    iTunes V8.0.2
    and also
    Front Row V2.1.6
The system will then log onto the network, log off and reboot correctly.
But, when I install the 10.5.6 combo update from any of my sources, it boots and logs on fine. But, if I log onto the network, it crashes when I log off.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks for your help.
    John R H

Have you tried starting up with your install disk and doing a disk repair?
Put the install disk that came with the Mac in the DVD/CD drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. You can take your finger off once you hear it making noises from the DVD/CD drive. You'll be presented with a screen where you choose your language. At the next screen on the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility you then select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If it makes any changes click on 'repair disk' again and repeat the process until you get a clean pass. Once done select restart from the Apple menu and hopefully the Mac will boot normally.

I upgraded to iOS x mavericks on my iMac now i cannot access my iPhoto i get this messageThis update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. I have not changed anything thankyou for any info.

Please test after each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes. Keep in mind that no one here represents Apple or can help with customer-service issues.
    Step 1
A purchased app can only be updated by signing in to the App Store with the same Apple ID that was originally used to buy it. There's no way around that limitation, which also applies to free apps. If you can't sign in with the buyer's ID, delete the app and reinstall it. You'll have to pay for it again, if applicable.
    Step 2
If you get the alert when trying to update a bundled iLife app, elect the Purchases page in the App Store and locate the app in your purchase history. If there's a button marked ACCEPT on the right, click it.
If you have a used Mac, the bundled apps were linked to the original owner's Apple ID and can't be transferred to you. Reportedly, customer service has issued redemption codes to some second owners who asked, but it's not guaranteed.
    Step 3
If you're trying to update iLife or iWork apps that were installed from a purchased DVD, or if you have a refurbished Mac bought directly from Apple, contact App Store customer service for a redemption code. You may be asked for the part number of the DVD.
    Step 4
From the App Store menu bar, select
    Store ▹ View My Account
Enter your Apple ID password at the prompt. At the lower right corner of the window that opens, click the Reset button. Close the window.

I want to buy a 21.5" new imac shortly. Will I be able to have a free update of the operating system to OS 10.9 when it arrives later this month?

Unfortunately there is no one here that can give you an answer; we are just users like yourself.
But based on past experience it has been known for free upgrades to be offered ... but not before the new OS is formally announced.   There have been several references of late to the imminent launch of Mavericks.  I think you can do no more than wait for the announcement.

You have already seen that you cannot load the new iTunes into your 10.5.8, so as Neil says, you need Snow Leopard (current cost £14).    And you'll probably need to update the disc you buy via the combo update, though that is free.
As far as the new iTunes is concerned, there's been a certain amount of grumbling so you may want to study the forums before you update.   The main problem has been with album artwork which does not transfer easily.
