Stuck in a Catch-22?

My wireless keyboard isn't paired with my iMac. I don't have a keyboard that isn't wireless, and my computer is locked with password protection. HELP!

Run out and buy a cheap wired keyboard?  Always good to have it as a backup.  Mouse too.
Try smc reset and hope for the best?

  • Stuck in Default catch!, OS9 loop on a partitioned disk

    I can't get back to OS 10.3
    I partitioned a new 40GB drive. Info says 7.8 GB for OS9, and 30.16 for what is now OS10.3. OS9 is the first partition.
    Here's what happens:
    Updated to OS 10.3
    Restarted. Was working to fine in OS 10.3 and decided to restart again for (unrelated(?) networking issue).
    On start up, I got HappyMac and then a screen that reads "Default catch!"
    I looked up in apple support how to get by that. I type "reset-nvram" ENTER, then "reset-all" ENTER, which restarts and boots to OS9.
    I already tried switching start up disks to OSX while in OS9. That just brings me back to Default catch! screen and cycle begins again.
    This did not happen until I upgraded to OS10.3. It worked fine for weeks in OS 10.1(?) -- whatever the PB came with.
    Thanks. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Kerry,
    I don't know how to fix the specific issue your PB is having, but I would start from scratch and not partition the HD. Is there some specific reason you want to? All Macs that can boot 9 and X shipped from Apple with both 9 and X on the same partition.

  • Stuck in a Catch 22 with headless Air, trying to reinstall system

    The screen on my older MacBook Air screen got cracked and no longer works, but I've been using it as a headless Mac by outputing to a monitor. The system got screwed up by Little Snitch and now any internet access at all works excruciatingly slowly if it works at all. So I'm trying to re-install the OS.
    I still have the USB Apple OS 10.6.4 System installer memory stick that came with the laptop to re-install the system and start over. The problem is the System installer requires a restart and then when it boots back up,  the only screen I can see, since the primary is broken, is the 2nd monitor which doesn't show a desktop or menu bar so I can't see how to actually initiate the restallation. I'm assuming the USB Apple installer is waiting for me to click on something, but since I can't see it I have no idea how to get it to work.
    I can see the cursor arrow and I've tried typing in my password to no avail.
    I've tried other MacOS system installer disks on the laptop which gives me a message to the effect that it won't work on it.
    Surely there's a way around this but I've tried everything I can think of which is why I'm here.

    Just to update, I tried the Apple USB System stick in another laptop and it never got past the Apple Logo, so that may be the problem.

  • Hyper-V cluster iSCSI not communicating on one host - Catch 22

    I'm in a catch-22, I have a 3 host Hyper-V 2012 cluster connected to a Dell Compellent SAN and Force 10 switches for iSCSI. Host3 simply stopped communicating via iSCSI, I can't ping Host 1 or 2 from Host 3 and vice versa.  I could take Host3 down
    for maintenance and troubleshoot any hardware issues, however, Host3 is stuck as the CSV owner...if I go into failover cluster manager under storage - disks, Host 3 is the owner node for all my CSVs. If I shut the server down all my VMS will stop. So I think
    I'm stuck in a catch-22. I can't shut the problematic server down to troubleshoot, and I can't change CSV owner to another host because iSCSI is not communicating. Any thoughts, ideas or troubleshooting steps are GREATLY appreciated.

    Why would the VMs stop if you shut down Host 3? Ownership of a CSV has no bearing on whether or not other systems have access to the CSV - that's the whole point of CSV.  Each host has its own separate communication path to the CSV and to the files
    (virtual hard disks) that it needs.
    If Host 3 is still shown as part of the cluster, there must be some communication going on.  Otherwise the other two nodes would have ejected it on their own.

  • Upgraded ML, Now Can't Select Boot Options - I'm Stuck

    Good morning,
    I just put in the latest updates for ML.  I'm using boot camp with the latest version of ML and Windows 7.  Prior to the upgrade, the default boot was set to Windows (that's because of a different problem I was trying to solve).
    Now, when I boot my machine, and hold the option key, I get a blank white screen.  After about 15 seconds it goes straight to Windows.   I've also tried holding down the "X" key.  Same result.
    I've looked for the boot camp support tools in Windows 7, to change the default boot, but the tools are not to be found.
    Here's where I'm stuck in a Catch-22, I need to be able to get to ML to be able to create the drivers and support CD, but I can't get to ML because I don't have the support tools.
    Thoughts, suggestions?

    Hi Mende1,
    Good suggestion.  A Snow Leopard DVD came with my Mac, and I was able to install the Boot Camp software.  When the computer reboot, the loader was fixed and I was able to get it to boot into the Mac world.
    It took me a long time to figure out how to open the DVD drive without an eject button and without a disc in it, it doesn't appear in My Computer list, so I couldn't right click and eject.  Finally had to download a small windows utility that pops the door open.
    Thanks, I'm running again.

  • Cannot upgrade iTunes to 11.2.2 and cannot sync my iPhone 4 without iTunes upgrade?

    I can't sync my iPhone 4 to my MacBook anymore.  I get an iTunes message that I need to upgrade but my system check says I have all the upgrades.  I tried to download iTunes 11.2.2 but my Mac can't handle it (OS X 10.5.8).  Am I stuck in a 'Catch 22' here?  Is this related to upgrading the phone to 7?

    The issue is your Mac's version of OS X is too old.  (Thank you for posting it!).
    The current version of iTunes (11.2.2) requires at least OS X 10.6.8 to run.  (The current version of OS X is 10.9.3.).
    If your Mac is too old, you may have an issue.  You might consider upgrading your Mac if you can.  At a minimum, you would need to purchase Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6, sold below), and then update it to OS X 10.6.8.

  • Zen Jukebox won't cha

    Hi
    Got a bit of a conundrum and was hoping someone could help. I've got an old Zen Jukebox (the USB and FireWire one - yeah I know, very old skool), which was working perfectly up to a couple of months ago. It stopped charging itself if connected to the mains. It's not the charger, as I've tried both the one that came with and the one on my Playdock.
    So I'm stuck charging by USB. No biggie, though I notice you have to turn it off (rather than just letting it run out of juice) for the charge symbol to appear. However, last night I was copying some music to it and it ran out of juice. It turn it back on to try to shut it down so it will charge, and it tries to rebuild the library, but runs out of juice half way through. No charging symbol. I leave it for a few hours for the battery to 'recover a bit', but it still can't make it through the rebuild. I try loading the rescue menu and shutting down from there. No charge symbol.
    So I'm stuck in a Catch 22. I need more charge in the battery to get it through the rebuild - and I need to rebuild the library to get it to charge.
    Any suggestions on how to get this going again will be gratefully received.
    Neil

    If the battery was flat when it was left it could well have left the battery in a state where it (a) has too low a voltage to be detected by the adapter or (b) is now broken.
    See the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net, but beware "force charging", it can cause a battery to catch fire or explode in rare circumstances so do at your OWN RISK.

  • Moved songs to new computer but Apple ID no longer exists and I cannot play

    I just bought my second Mac and moved all my iTunes songs to it. When I try to play a song, it asks me to authorize for my old AppleID which is no longer exists. So when I type it in, it says that the account no longer exists.
    So I'm kind of stuck in a catch 22. I can't play the songs unless I authorize with my old Apple ID but that ID no longer exists.
    I searched the forums quite a bit and did not find the answer. Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks fellow Mac users!

    Why did you create a new Apple ID?
    No need to do that.

  • Unable to Boot from OSX -- Get Strange Schematic

    Hello -
    A friend forgot her password on her iBook. Using this forum, we found out that she can access and change the password by booting from the OSX disk (Tiger) and opening the "Utilities" on the installer. So we inserted the disk and restarted the iBook, holding down the "C" key. To our surprise, instead of getting the usual install screen, we got what looked like a schematic of a mouse, from which we could not exit. The only thing we could do was to reboot from the hard disk. This happened numerous times. Has anyone seen this before, and does anyone have any advice? Thanks for your help.
    Shelly
    P.S.: Holding down the "Option" key at restart got us nowhere, as you are prompted to enter the password before proceeding.

    Hi, Shelly.
    You wrote: "P.S.: Holding down the "Option" key at restart got us nowhere, as you are prompted to enter the password before proceeding."While holding the "C" key is the correct way to startup from a CD, your description implies she enabled Open Firmware password protection on her Mac. See "Setting up firmware password protection in Mac OS X 10.1 or later". If you're seeing the same screen as the screen shot within that article, that may explain the problems you are having.
    There are instructions at the end of that article re: disabling the open firmware password, but they require the password. Since she doesn't know the Admin password, she's stuck in a "Catch 22" if she's enabled Open Firmware protection.
    I suggest you have her take the iBook to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    • If there is an Apple Retail Store in your area, I'd recommend taking it there. You may wish to call ahead to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.
    • If not, try the "Find a reseller" search here to see if there's an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area.
    There are ways of removing Open Firmware password protection without having the password, but I'm reluctant to post them here as the same info would also be useful to someone who stole a Mac.
    Good luck!

  • Why do I have to buy an application twice? Once before the App store and now after the App store has the same application - Aperture

    I have Aperture on my MacPro that was purchased before the App store was born. IT has been updated to the current version now. I also put it on my MacBookPro but it won't accept the same license - says it is invalid license. When I go to the App store, it says I can downlowd it for another $79.99, but if I try to do that, it says I already have Aperture on my laptop. So, I am stuck in a catch 22.

    Nevermind. After reading other similar posts I think I figured it out. I'll have to delete my version of Aperture on my laptop and then reinstall from the App store - although I think I will still have to purchase again.

  • Designed by Photographers... mistake No. 1?

    I'm an Aperture fan and I believe that the programs has great potential... but that's about it at this time. While many photographers will appreciate some of the features, many of the key 'processing' features are either not present or burried in drop-down menus. Arguably many photographers don't know the first thing about the digital post-production workflow and are stuck in a 'catch up' situation - this seems to be reflected in Apple's new raw processing software.
    Aperture seems to be missing some very basic essentials for processing out raw files with professional control...
    • RGB info palette - how does a raw processing program make it through the beta trials without anyone putting their foot down on this one? It's an absolute MUST. Many decisions are made based on the RGB values within an image.
    • Why no curves? How many raw processing programs have to fail because they don't include curves - curves equal more control? A pro app should have this - the 'top' adjustment slider in the Histogram doesn't cut it.
    • The White Balance picker is 'jumpy' and difficult to control (using a dual 2.0 G5, 4.5 GB memory, ATI x800 Graphics card). Give me the choice of using an eyedropper or greatly improve the smoothness and accuracy of the loupe in White Balance mode.
    • Why, in the 'out of the box' default setup, are the export buttons (process buttons) not included in the main toolbar?
    • Why is the default RGB colour setting for export, the sRGB space? Adobe 1998 is the current industry standard for professional photographers - a larger colour gamut appropriate for professional repurposing/editing/compositing. sRGB is arguably better for ink jet printing and web, but not much more.
    • Why not support multiple output processing ? (eg. process out a high res tiff and low res jpeg with one click of the export button) Saving time is important to pros - less time at the computer means more time shooting.
    • Reorganise the Adjustments HUD. There's too much scrolling with the current configuration. Perhaps switching to a 'tabs' format would make the process run more smoothly.
    My company is in the process of 'reviewing' Aperture. So far, after only two days, these are the gripes we have. We'll be following up with further notes regarding the first release of Aperture but would welcome comments from other professionals.

    dual 2.0 G5's - 4.5 GB memory - ATI x800 Graphics card   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Our bottom-line is this... Apple has had both the opportunity and time to study other Raw Processing programs, to gather/research/study the feedback from those that have used these other apps (eg. C1 Pro, ACR, Bibble, etc) and they have had the resources to put together a very skilled development team.
    We have used many of these Pro-level raw processing apps on a daily basis and still none compare to the 'workflow' abilities of C1 Pro - note that C1 could also use a complete overhaul/retooling. As well as being affordable, ACR seems well suited to those working with a relatively small volume of images per session. Not a Bibble fan when compared to other apps. Proprietary software is often poorly designed and not very intuitive - however they do tend to deliver the 'best' results since they are specifically designed to process the 'native' raw format. When it comes to Aperture, we were excited about the perceived 'workflow' shown in the demos. We made the mistake of assuming that common tools (RGB info palette/display, curves) would be included in the program... after all it is supposed to be a professional program.
    This is my point. Apple seems to have been too wrapped up in the management of images that it has overlooked some very important 'key' processing tools and functions. Using the excuse that 'this is the '1.0 version' of the software' is inexcusable when they have had both the time and resources to study other somewhat successful 'raw processing' apps.
    All of that said... I believe in Apple and appreciate the advancements (software/hardware) they have made. I think we should all pitch in our two cents worth - both positive and negative feedback - and hope that many of these problems/issues be resolved effectively and in a timely manner. Aperture will remain on our software shelf until it truly becomes a 'Professional Raw Processing' application.

  • I was in the process of backing up my 4s to activate my 5s.

    During the process, I lose connection and my 4s becomes locked and is stuck in Restore Mode. Work phone with massive contacts list.
    I tunes says I must restore to factory settings. Then says do I want to lose all my saved stuff? ***!
    He'll no, I want  a good back up to upload onto my new phone. Unsure if I got a good back up or not.
    Now I have a new phone and a locked old phone and have ZERO confidence in Apple to rectify this.
    Stuck in a catch 22. I can just see some idiot in an Apple store with a 2 hour hair do and a blue T-shirt to restore to factory and losing everything.
    Is there a way to find out if I have a good back up on I-tunes?
    We did a family of 4 upgrade from 4s to the 5s. Two successful upgrade, now this. I do have two old 4s that are no more than iPhone iPads for Internet use.
    Can I restore one of those old phones and see if a synk with this locked info copies over.
    I feel really screwed with lack of instructions.
    Tom

    The phone shows a picture of an iTunes logo and a chord with arrow that I assume means to plug it back into the computer I was trying to back it up on.
    Then the messages that the phone is in restore mode and leads to the next screen that wants to restore to factory settings. When I click Restore it gives me a message do I really want to restore. Restore will erase all my info.
    No faith in proceeding till I know I have a fall back to restore all my info.
    Like I said, no faith in Apple.

  • Change country problems

    I recently moved from the UK to Australia and need to change the country/region of my appstore id to reflect this. However when I go into the apple id, change country or region I click the button to make the change, the phone communicates for a moment but no selection list appears so I cannot select Australia as my country and carry on to enter payment details.
    Could this be related to the fact that my UK card is no longer active and the appstore is waiting for a valid card before I can access to change the region and payment details? If so its seems like I'm stuck in a catch 22. This is starting to affect my business as I am beginning to not be able to update and use business apps because of this issue.
    Please help!

    Could very well be. Get an iTunes gift card, redeem that, change your credit card to "none". See if doing that fixes things.

  • Temp Space Issue

    Hi there folks.
    I've been using this forum as a reference point for the last couple of months but this is the first time I've had to post anything because I happen to have a pickle of an issue. In fact, it's that beefy, even my company's development team is stumped... Yeah.
    So, a quick bit of background. The current client I'm working for is a Government agency related to Health & Public Services. The database we use works as a go-between with Siebel CAM and Business Objects. As the two don't naturally speak to each other, occasionally we get inevitible data incosistencies. We had an Informatica CDC issue a little while ago which left a lot of stale data, primarily relating to tasks which should have been closed or naturally expired. To clear up the backlog and return consistency to the DB, we've been working on updating a workflow which will refresh the tasks across the entire DB and bring everything in line.
    Now, when the DB was designed, Task_Refresh was created and worked when tested as the DB was getting loaded with data. The problem is, when it was tested initially, there was only a few hundred thousand records to filter through. Now that the DB is in full swing, there's 22 million records and we're encountering issues. Essentially when we run the workflow in Informatica, it gets as far as the Source Qualifier and fails, having chewed through the available 16gb of temp space in the space of an hour.
    I've been working for weeks trying to tune the SQL code for the source qualifier and, along with the development team, I'm now well and truly stuck. Here is the query:
    SELECT
        a.1,
        a.2,
        a.3,

        AND c.LAST_UPD >= TO_DATE('9/23/2011 00:00:01','mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss'))
        or
        (b.LAST_UPD < TO_DATE('9/30/2011 00:00:00','mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
        AND b.LAST_UPD >= TO_DATE('9/23/2011 00:00:01','mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss'))
        or

        AND e.LAST_UPD >= TO_DATE('9/23/2011 00:00:01','mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss'))
       );We are running this on 10g 10.1.0.5.0 - 64bi
    So, obviously I've replaced the table names and most of the column names, but a.1 is the primary key. What we have is the primary key compared to the PAR_ROW_ID column in each of the child tables and one of the other main tables, looking for matching IDs down the whole of the PARENT_TABLE. In this database, tasks can be entered in any of the five tables mentioned for various different reasons and functions. The dates in the last section are just arbitrary dates we have been working with, when the query works and is running into production, the dates will change, a week at a time based on a parameter file in Informatica.
    In troubleshooting, we found if we remove the left outer joins in the WHERE clause, then the query will return data, but not the right amount of data. Basically, PARENT_TABLE is just too massive for the temp space we have available. We can't increase the temp space and we can't get rid of the joins because that changes the functionality significantly. We have also tried restructuring the query by filtering on the dates first but that doesn't help, though I suspect that the order of the WHERE clause is being ignored by Oracle due to it's own performance related decisions. I have tried restructuring the query into 5 smaller queries and using Unions to tie it all together at the end, but still nothing.
    We have even tried setting the date and time for an hour's worth of entries and that was still too big.
    I'm stuck in a catch 22 here because we need to get this working, but the client is adamant that we should not be changing the functionailty. Is there any possible solution any of you can see for this?
    Thank you in advance for any help you can offer on this.
    (also, we are providiing support for the applications the database uses [CAM, BO], so we don't actually run this db per se, the client does. We've asked them to increase the temp space and they wont.
    The error when we run the workflow is: ORA-01652: unable to extend temp segment by 128 in tablespace BATCH_TEMP)

    Technilcally you should be able to rewrite this query as a UNION ALL of 4 separate parts, providing you remember to include a predicate in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th query blocks that eliminate rows that have already been reported by the earlier query blocks.
    Each part will be driven by one of the four range based predicates you have - and for the three parts that drive off child tables the join to the parent should NOT be an outer join.
    Effectively you are trying to transform the query manually using the CONCATENATION operator. It's possibly (but I suspect very unlikely) that the optimizer will do this for you if you add the hint /*+ use_concat */ to the query you currently have.

  • Dynamic LDAP settings

    APEX- 2.0.0.00.49
    LDAP=OID
    Database-9iRelease2
    We are using LDAP as our authentication schema and it is all working fine.We have defined the LDAP settings like this :-
    Page SentryFunction - null
    Session Verify Function -null
    Authentication Function - "-LDAP-"
    LDAP Host - "myhostname"
    LDAP PORT - 13060
    LDAP DN STRING - cn=%LDAP_USER%,cn=HTMLDB_Users,dc=XX,dc=XX,dc=XX
    The problem with this design is that the ldap settings need to be specified in the authentication page itself and if the client changes their LDAP details they won't be able to change these details as we provide the application "run only'.
    To solve this problem we have created a table which would store the LDAP details like hostname,port,context string etc. I have created application items for all these settings and have computations for these items to trigger on login..but I guess I am stuck in a "catch 22" situation because I need to login for my computations to fire and on the other hand I need my computations to fire so that my ldap authentication can work.
    Can someone suggest a solution here ?
    tks in

    Hmm, looks like those values don't allow substitution strings. Try this:
    Create application items APP_LDAP_HOST, APP_LDAP_PORT
    Use the pre-authentication process of the authentication scheme to set these values, e.g.,  begin
        :APP_LDAP_HOST := 'myldaphost.somewhere.com';
        :APP_LDAP_PORT := '389';
      end;Compile your own authentication function:create or replace function myauth(
      p_username in varchar2, p_password in varchar2)
    return boolean
    is
    begin
      return htmldb_custom_auth.ldap_authenticate(
        p_username => p_username,
        p_password => p_password,
        p_ldap_host => v('APP_LDAP_HOST'),
        p_ldap_port => v('APP_LDAP_PORT'),
        p_ldap_string => 'cn=%LDAP_USER%,l=amer,dc=oracle,dc=com',
        p_ldap_edit_function => 'return htmldb_custom_auth.ldap_dnprep;', -- call your own function if our ldap_dnprep isn't what you need
        p_owner => 'VISHAL_SCHEMA');
    end;
    /Take all the LDAP attributes out of the authentication scheme.
    In the authentication function field type:  return myauth;Scott
