pamella:
Your surest bet is to make sure that you have an up-to-date backup of your stuff and then do an Archive and Install. If you don't have a backup and since you can't log in, you can use Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire Mac to see if you can rescue your data.

  • Darwin/BSD (my-macs-name) (consol) at startup. Why and what to do???

    I get this at startup:
    Darwin/BSD (my-macs-name) (consol)

I login using my info then there is the $ prompt. I have no clue what to do then.
This has never happened before. I usualy start the mac and it goes to my desktop screen.
I have done disc repairs, everything is repaired, but still it goes to the consol. I have tried both safe mode and single user mode, and the startup process stops on the light blue apple screes before any spining wheel.
    Please help.

Setup Assistant crashedThis is bad news.
I found another topic here that you might want to look at. It is worth trying at least removing the preference file. I'm going to give the full path to these commands since I'm not sure how healthy your environment is.
Start in Single User mode again, then (type carefully):
/sbin/fsck -fyand repeat this command until it says your disk is OK. Then
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    /bin/rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /bin/rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
/sbin/rebootIf this doesn't work I would think you need to re-instal, but if you want to try repairing permissions, which one poster in the above topic claimed worked for him, you will need some additional stuff.
    In Single User mode
    /bin/sh /etc/rc
    /usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /
/sbin/rebootIf none of this works, your best bet is to try an Archive & Install:
Mac OS X : About the Archive and Install Feature.
Good Luck! … and let us know how you get on.

  • How to unshare /Network/Servers/users-computer.local ?

    Hi
are there any security issues on /Network/Servers/users-computer.local ?
Everytime I delete it :sudo rm -rf /Network/* removes the shared stuff.
But when I log back in I see /Network/Servers/users-computer.local is there again.
Are who can access my users-computer.local? is it shared via network?
How do i delete it permanently?
    thanks
    Kilopopo

You can't. Your single machine is on its own Network, with you as the local user. What you're seeing is normal behavior. There's nothing to worry about.

  • Stuck in Darwin/BSD (macintosh.local.) (console)

Somehow, in attempting to reset my main password (which I was able to do by using the start-up disc, finally), I have gotten myself stuck in the Darwin console.
    Here is the start-up procedure.
    1. I turn on the machine
    2. It boots from the hard drive
    3. I get the chime and think everything is going on fine
    4. I get the prompt to select a user id and enter the password
    5. I choose the one ID and enter the password
    6. I am taken, not to the GUI, but to the Darwin/BSD console login.
I can't move forward, log in, nor exit.
    Any help?

p.s. a heck of a tennis game you fine people put on today!

I'm trying to fix my husband's ibook. It's also doing the Darwin/BSD thing. I did everything posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1553062
And I ended up with the result noted by Leah(?)--I get a repeating blue screen. Looks/acts like it's booting. I get the Apple, status bar, then blue screen, changes shades, but keeps repeating about 3 separate shades of blue with a quick status circle in between.
When I go into Darwin and do one of the checks Michael suggested, it tells me repeatedly that Setup Assistant crashed. I finally reached a point where I was willing to reinstall. My husband doesn't store anything on his system--just uses it for Internet and e-mail, so no great loss could occur even in a worst case. He may need to reinstall some e-mail addresses, favorites, etc., but nothing major.
BUT, I can't get the thing to boot from a the install disk 1! The computer won't recognize the disk. I tried holding down C. No go. I tried option--and here's the weird thing. The hard drive for the system shows up, but NOT the CD! I tried CMD-OPT-SHIFT-DELETE, and I got the folder/flashing question mark alternating symbols. Basically, the system recognizes the hard drive, but won't boot from it. And although I hear the CD clicking and whirring in the drive, it won't read the disk as a recognizable drive...?
We'll likely bring it in tomorrow, because I'm out of ideas. I was actually going to try to unplug the HD and see if the CD would then read (based on a MacZone article I came across), but when I saw the schematic online for mucking with an ibook, that was way out of my league as someone who has only monkey-ed with desktops before.
Anyway--I don't mind reformatting. That would be totally fine. But is there any way I can achieve that at this point? Or is it off to the shop in the a.m.?
    Thanks!

  • From being stuck in Darwin/BSD to a blue screen loop

    Hi,
I guess I must face the idea that my BabyMac might be dead. But, I'm going to keep trying until I know for sure.
I was changing permissions this pm, and Restarted the Finder... then restarted. When the computer booted up, it took me only to the Darwin/BSD (console) screen. My disc drive doesn't seem to be working, or maybe my disc, so that's moot.
I followed the directions given by Michael Conniff on "Restoring the NetInfo database after an Authorisation failure,". I may have messed up on where it says that "...you need to list the uids against the shortnames given in the final column" because I don't understand what is meant by "list." List them where? How? BUT, nevertheless, I then continued with "reboot" as stated.
Instead of starting up in the Setup Assistant mode, the computer seems stuck in a loop between a blue screen with the curser (about 2 sec), a blank blue screen (flash), then a blue screen with the little rotating grey circle (about 2 seconds) then another blue flash, then everything all over again.
That is where I'm at now. Any suggestions on how to get my BabyMac back?

  • Powerbook stuck in Darwin/BSD Terminal... HELP!

My Powerbook/OS is acting up and I can't get past the Darwin/BSD Terminal. I've tried starting up using various startup key functions. I've checked my drive in Single User Mode and everything checks out OK, but I can't access disk utility by pressing C at startup. For some reason my Powerbook won't boot off of any of the OS Install discs that I have. It also won't run by holding down the shift key into Safe Mode. I did reset the PRAM and PMU and also ran the fsck command line utility, but it still reverts back to the Darwin/BSD Terminal when powered on. Any suggestions on what I should do next to get a functioning OS would be appreciated. I'd prefer not to have to re-format my drive and re-install everything, so if there are any other solutions please let me know. Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for the quick response and suggestions Carolyn. I appreciate it. Do you think that running either DiskWarrior or TechToolPro will get me up and running again or does it sound like I might need to completely re-format and re-install everything. Could the fact that the Powerbook is only booting to the Darwin/BSD terminal indicate something other than scrambled partitions/directories or is that the likely problem? I'm hoping the situation isn't too serious. If anyone else has seen this issue before please let me know what route you had to take to get things in order again.

  • Darwin/bsd problem

    Hi,
I am having a problem with my iBook G4. I see many people having the same problem and read many of those threads but most people have a slighly different thing happening from mine. So here is mine.
After turning on mac you will see Apple logo with grey background with a wheel thing spinning.
Then blue background and spinning...... Black screen and white text that says
    "Darwin/BSD (s-Computer.local)(console)"
    login:
I type login(or whatever letter, seems like it doesn't matter what I type) and hit "Return".
It says "Password:" and I see a white cursor but I can't type anything..... Only thing that I can do is hit Reurn but then it turns into blue screen and comes back to black screen again.
Having read other people's post on this forum I tried to do the same thing like "Command+S", "Command+C"...... or fsck...? I am sorry I really don't know what these things are doing but at least I am trying to get a grasp of what is going on but I gave up. Is
Fortunately I had another computer so I ended up on this forum. Obviuosly I like to know how to get out of this but another question is "Is it possible to transfer all of the data from this iBook to the computer I am using now?" I have a firewire cable but since iBook is not moving, you cannot transfer data?
    Any help would be appreciated......

    Thank you very much Niel.
I thought in order to do that I turn on my desktop one (the one I am using now) with T held on? I was doing that and yellow sign was flashing. I waited, waiited for maybe 20 min and it didn't go anywhere from that blue screen with yellow sign still flashing. So I thought maybe I was not doing right thing. Or does it take that long to transfer?
    Thank you again.

  • Computer crashed- Darwin/BSD window?!

    Today, my PowerBook G4 crashed...hard.
I wasnt even on it working. The computer was open, and the desktop was showing, and suddenly- the screen went blue with only a few sparatic boxes of my desktop showing.
I waited for bit, but it was completely frozen. So, I manually turned it off, and let it sit for a bit.
When I went to turn it back on, the normal blue loadup screen started.. but when it came to "Login Window Starting", it literally stayed there for almost 10 minutes.
The screen then went black and this popped up in white font:
    Darwin/BSD (Amanda-Naors-Computer.local) (console)
    Login:
It took several tries until I realized to try my login name (duh), and then "Password:" popped up.
I typed in my mac password, and it said, "Invalid Login".... BUT then eventually the computer slowly loaded up to my normal desktop.
The whole process took almost 20 minutes
What the heck happened to my computer?! Is it okay?

looks like it goes to your user home folder.
maybe insert OS X install CD, restart and hold down "c" on keyboard
after it starts up from CD, run "archive and install" option - it will create new System folder and supposed to keep all user files intact.
there is a risk that if the hard drive is damaged, whole thing could crash and files may be lost.

  • Computer boots to Darwin/BSD

When I turn on my computer it goes through all of the basic loading thingies, then it shows the log in GUI for a split second. After that it immediatly fades and Darwin/BSD (xxxx-xxxxx's Computer.local)(console) shows up.
I followed the post here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1280918#1280918
And I see a "Login Authorization Failed (-60008)!"
    AusthotizationRef doesn't have a username (<LoginAuthRefMgr: 0x41b130>).
    Any help?

Hello Charlie, Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
Sorry to be late to the party!
I'm sorry that rebuilding the NetInfo database didn't work for you. Your "Startup assistant has crashed" message is not one I remember in 10.3.
Since you have already tried altering the NetInfo database, without success, the best advice I can offer is to perform an Archive & Install:
Mac OS X : About the Archive and Install Feature.
This has helped others when resetting NetInfo didn't work.

  • : Booting to Darwin/BSD Screen

    greetings,
I noticed a link here with a solution to my inquiry but I can't understand if there are suppose to be spaces or all info is suppose to be closed. the link is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&tstart=0&messageID=3088 809#3088809
I am sure the answer will work but I just couldn't figure out the segment, for instance the boot is written like this (/sbin fsck -fy) but when I tried it, I finally got the G4 to state it was actually /sbin/fsck -fy, where above it has spaces. after this I couldn't figure out how many spaces were between other codes listed here:
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    mv local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
    ls -ln /Users
    can some rewrite it correctly?
    would it be like this:
    /sbin/mount -uw
    cd/var/db/netinfo
    mvlocal.nidb/local.nidb.bad
    ls -in/users
I couldnt get past the first, the G4 gave me other options after i typed in command /sbin/fsck -uy. would appreciate any feedback, its like a million combos to me at this point.

hmmm I got stuck on the first part, after i put in FY, it told me it was a error and to Force start it with -F, after that, it worked, I got the okay, but after i put in the code of /sbin/mount -uw / it pulled up the word MOUNT: and three lines of different codes, none of which were familiar.
    I followed the link:
Reset OS X Password Without an OS X CD...
    http://theappleblog.com/2008/06/22/reset-os-x-password-without-an-os-x-cd/
that seemed to set me up with a new name, but when I control s, i dont get single anymore, only it popped up and said:
    Welcome to Darwin!
    "my name for admin"-powebook-g4-12:~ect.
I cant even get into single user anymore, it just comes up when i hit command s: Darwin/BSD (name, name-powerbook-) (console)

Help! Upon doing the recommended Apple Updates, my comuter boots to a black screen asking for

    Sojourner:
I thought I'd share the more technical Unix approach first. I am not at all adept at Unix. Michael Coniff, who posted that solution also posts in the Unix Forum, but also frequents these pages. My own solution was more rudimentary. I share it here not because it is any way exemplary, but because it worked for me.
Here is an account of how I dealt with the issue:Nov 3, 2005 11:54 AM
I was finally able to get the iBook to boot from the install disk, after failing to get it to boot from TechTool Pro CD. Disk Utility reports a lot of extent allocation file overlaps that it can't repair. I was able to select my LaCie external boot drive as a Startup drive. I have TechTool Pro installed on it and am now running TechTool Pro. Hopefully this will straighten out those overlapping extent allocation files. Will keep you posted.
    Nov 4, 2005 1:24 PM
After being able to get into the iBook by booting from my LaCie boot drive I ran DU and found all kinds of overlapping directories that DU couldn't repair.
Went to TechToolPro and repaired, rebuilt directories, optimized drives (took all night; my son-in-law never did any maintenance and almost 20,000 disk fragments). So I thought, for sure we had taken care of Darwin. However, rebooted from the iBook this a.m. and, sure enough, there was Darwin again.
So I am in the process of cloning the entire drive to an empty partition on my LaCie reserved for just such emergencies. Then I plan to wipe the entire HDD and write zeros all over it. Then reinstall and restore. Hope that takes care of the little devil. Will let you know.
    Nov 4, 2005 7:59 PM
The project is complete. I have reinstalled Tiger and restored the User Folder, and the computer boots on its own. Darwin must be lurking somewhere, which is fine, so long as he doesn't show up on the display. Here is the link to that thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1047613&#1047613
    Good luck.

  • Login takes me to Darwin/BSD - HELP!

Upon booting and logining in, a black screen appears with this:
    Darwin/BSD (Geneva-Raes-Computer.local) (console)
    Login:
I am unable to login. When I try to input any information it prompts 'Could not determine audit condition'
How can I get to the Desktop?

If you were installing system updates and the machine crashed, then it means that only a partila update occurred, and some files have been changed and others haven't, making the machine confused.
Your best option at this point is to back up all your files, boot from the install CD, erase the drive and install the OS from scratch...fresh. Then do all the updates then install your applications and bring back your files.

  • Restarted G4 and got "Darwin/BSD (Amnesiac) (console)" on black screen

    Hi,
I had been playing music on my PB G4 for a while and when I came back to it to turn off the music I noticed that none of the info. in the menu bar was there (date/time/battery/volume etc.). This happened a few days ago also, so this time I decided to Restart. When I selected Restart, my computer didn't ask the usual, "Are you sure you want to restart?". Instead, the screen just went black and said, "Darwin/BSD (Amnesiac) (console)" and below asked for a login and then password. Well, I got my login wrong, so it said "incorrect login" and then returned to the same screen again. This time I think I got my login/password right but it still returned to the same black screen. At that point I pushed the power button and the computer turned off. After a few seconds I pushed it again to start up. It started up fine and I'm now backing up all my files, but should I be worried???

    roxy_leopard:
The Darwin screen is usually caused by a corrupted NetInfo database, which usually involves trying to sort it out in Single User Mode. Sometimes a complete reformat and re-install is needed. That is why I suggest keeping your backup up to date, and do regular maintenance. However, if you have been running since your recovery, it is unlikely to recur, although there are no guarantees.
    Cheers
