Stuck in endless reboot

I'm stuck in an endless reboot, meaning it powers on to the apple logo , sits there for a few minutes and then powers off and restarts the same cycle. This only started out as occasional reboots, then the next day it was rebooting a lot, then the third day I tried fixing it with hard restarts and using itunes to restore it. It didn't help any. So this time I tried to reset all my setting on phone, it loaded and turned on- then started the constant reboot process again.
I tried hooking it up to itunes in DHU but itunes tells me the the "Software update server could not me contacted" and didn't give me anyways on how to fix that.
I really need my phone for work and other jobs and having a brick of a phone isn't going to help.
My phone just stopped showing the symbol to connect to itunes and began the reboot session over again.
What can I do?

To rule out a software issue, set it up as new device, without using the latest backup. Set up your settings manually and see if the phone works after that.
If yes, restore from the latest backup. If the problem comes back, the backup contained damaged data causing these issues.

  • Satellite L500-1DT: HDD Recovery of Win 7 is stuck in endless reboot loop

This is a detailed bug report so please bear with me.
If you can help, or can confirm you've had the same happen to you, I'll be grateful.
I've owned several Toshiba laptops before and I even used to work for Toshiba so rest assured I like the machine. But I've got a problem with its recovery software. I just bought a laptop, Satellite L500-1DT with Windows 7 64 bit, on behalf of a non-techie who lives elsewhere. Since I know from experience that I will occasionally have to field panic calls along the lines of "it's become too slow", "how do I get rid of the accumulated junk", "maybe it's got a virus" and so on, the first thing I checked was the automatic recovery, i.e. how to bring the HD back to "as new" state.
So I booted into the machine, answered the questions until I got into the OS proper, and then ran the "make a recovery DVD" program. Double layer DVD verified ok. With the freshly made DVD, I swapped the supplied HD for a spare I had (much smaller: only 40 GB instead of 320) and booted the rescue DVD hoping that it would remake me a clean system on the blank drive.
It did repartition the drive according to its scheme, with more or less half the space for Windows and the other half for Data including the recovery files. It did install the system in the Windows partition. It then rebooted into the installed Windows 7 to finalize the installation. There, trouble began: an endless loop of reboots for hours until I stopped it.
    Loop:
    * reboot
    * black screen with bright 4-colour windows logo "starting windows"
    * black screen with light blade and "setup is preparing your computer for first use"
    * blue "welcome" white screen with "please wait" and horizontal bar with green blob, saying "Finishing the installation may take several minutes. Please dont interrupt or shutdown the computer!"
    * blue screen saying it's shutting down
    Repeat the above forever.
I have seen it reboot way over 10 times over the course of several hours. And every time it pretends it's the first time it does that. Surely that's not normal!
I tried stopping it with ctrl-alt-del and task manager but the white screen would go on top of even the task manager, making it hard to kill any processes or even inspect what they were. I stopped it by holding down the power button until it switched off. Then when it rebooted it said if I wanted safe mode. I tried that. It went into the routine above and at some point it said it couldn't proceed with the installation if it was in safe mode. So it rebooted into regular mode and then... finished! It finally broke out of the endless loop!
Then it asked me all the usual questions about language, registration etc, as it had done the first time I had turned it on. This seemed good. I finally got back into a newly installed OS and all seemed fine, except I later discovered that some programs that were there before were not installed.
With bravery bordering stupidity (*) I even re-did the procedure on the supplied hard disk instead of my spare one: first I nuked the windows partition, then I did rescue from the HD (with F8), not with the DVD I had made. Result: similar rigmarole, with endless reboots.
After I stopped it, it sort-of-worked, as above, but now some other programs were missing, notably the Toshiba DVD player.
(*) motivated by: better try this now, with the computer here and all my tools and other computers ready at hand, than when the computer is away at its owner's home and that's the only thing left to try with me at the other end of a phone line. Been there before.
Now, that specific one (DVD player) I could download from the support page and it installed fine; but what else might be missing or not working that I didn't notice? Clearly the restore process isn't working as it should.
Am I the first or only one to whom this happens? Am I doing anything wrong? Is there anything else I should try?
I need to make sure this restore procedure works flawlessly while I still have the computer in my hands. If it doesn't, there's no chance I'm going to be able to do a remote reinstall for my non-techie once I am asked to clean up the laptop over the phone a few months from now.
    Thanks in advance
[Update: while looking for the right place where I could post this I found that other people are reporting the same problem. It's definitely a bug in the distributed recovery software for W7-64, not an isolated problem of my machine. See for example
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=49421&tstart=0 where user kwarc is describing the same symptoms with a Satellite L505.

I am glad to report some unexpected SUCCESS!
I left the computer at what it was doing when I wrote the previous
post. I came back to it an hour later or so (I had stopped counting
the reboots, though occasionally I'd hear that typical chime from the
other room, saying it was doing one more cycle) and I noticed
something slightly different: the white screen with "finishing the
installation may take several minutes" had a blue blob, not a green
blob, in the progress bar, and the blob was rectangular rather than
rounded. Very odd! Something different had happened, like a change of
theme. And a little while after that, the process really finished and
I got to the white screen that asks about what language etc etc, like
when I first turned on the new computer.
    Great!
All I can conclude from this experience:
Even a reinstall that works will DEFINITELY involve many reboots that
seem to be getting nowhere. Apparently, progress is being made, even
though it looks like the process is stuck in a loop of reboots.
It would just be nice if it said something like "Before I finish
restoring, I'm going to have to reboot 26 times, please hang on; now
doing cycle 8 of 26". (Numbers are made up.) It doesn't, but just
    knowing about it is helpful.
Perhaps worth redoing the install once more and making a note of how
long it really takes from beginning to end when it does work.
I still don't know if the process I described in the first post was
really stuck because of some other error or whether it would have
ended eventually. If I wanted to be really sure I could re-restore
everything on that hard disk once more.
I have no idea whether wiping all partitions from the disk before
reinstalling did any good or not: it shouldn't have made a difference
since, as I said, I noticed that the first thing the restore program
did was redo all the partitions itself. On the other hand we have
experimental proof that the restore can work on a HD without any
    partitions.
Thanks again PauPau---the most useful thing you said, for me, was the
data point that for you it had worked. That's what made me try again
and leave the computer on indefinitely through the innumerable
    reboots, just in case.
I'll repost a definitive answer on how long a successful restore
process should take once I get round to redoing it on the supplied 320
    GB HD.

  • IPad stuck with endless reboots

It gets stuck on the apple logo and then shuts off. It does this over and over.
I have got it into recovery and dfu mode and restored it.
But after it completes it, it goes back to the endless reboots.

Sorry your iPad is acting up, (I had issues with my iPad air) I couldn't get it to work the way it should so I took it in to an Apple store and they completely took care of it, (it was still under warranty.) So since you have an iPad Air 2 the best suggestion is what kromern posted, but be sure to back up your iPad on your PC or in iCloud if you have enough space then try to restore it using iTunes on your PC. (if you haven't already,)
Go here for info on doing that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
and if that doesn't work try and locate an Apple store near you... call first and check what the store can do for you, and what, if any charges they may require.
Good luck, I hope you are able to get some assistance and have your iPad working as it should.

{2} The disk boots a dos session and text pops up for a full system restore ( F1 to continue, F2 to cancel )
    {3} I press F1.
{4} A text warning screen pops up about losing all data when formatting the hard drive ( C to continue, A to abort )
    {5} I press C
{6} 2 or 3 seconds later my laptop reboots to the dos session in step {2}, there are no warnings or messages, just an endless loop of this "recovery" software asking me to press F1 and C to continue.
I have multiple *nix live cds and can partition and format this new drive to anything this recovery cd needs, but there is NO documentation about this rcovery disk other than power up while holding the "C" key.

Some more details about this UNSOLVED failure in the recovery discs code.
    {step 2 screen is:}
Welcome to the Toshiba Recovery utility.
This process will restore the original default system install on your hard drive.
Note that the current contents of your hard drive will be erased and replaced by the default system install.  You should back up your system before continuing.
By selecting OK, you are accepting the terms of the Microsoft end-user license agreement that appears in the Windows License Agreement Setup Screen.
    F1 = OK, F2 = Cancel
    {step 3 I press F1}
    {Breifly followed by:}
The recovery is in progress, please wait
    {step 4 screen is:}
(ascii graphic of Xs spelling out "Warning")
Continuing with this process will erase the current contents of your hard disk drive and replace them with the original default system install.  To proceed:
    1. Ensure that the recovery CD/DVD is in the CD/DVD drive.
    2. Keep the CD/DVD in the drive until you are asked to remove it.
If you do not want to erase the contents of your hard isk drive then press 'A' to abort.
To continue press (C), To abort press (A)...[C,A}?
    {and then it reboots and starts over again about 3 seconds after pressing "C"}
The new hard drive works perfectly; it is not the problem.  I can install and uninstall ubunto on it with zero problems.
I was also able to install / uninstall Windows2000pro from an actual real w2k install disc (not a crapfest recovery disc)
While running w2k I can put the Toshiba WinXPhome recovery DVD in the drive and it will autorun its GUI.
Pressing the about button on the recovery GUI pops up:
Satellite P30, P35 Windows XP Home PIRAD DVD -v1.1
        Toshiba Recovery and Applications CD
        Version 1.1.1.26 Copyright (c) 1997-2002 Toshia America
The Recovery GUI gives the option of installing individual applications (NO, WinXP is not listed among the applications); or doing a complete system restore.
When complete restore is selected, a warning about data loss appears and it asks that a confirm button be pressed before pressing finish.
After these buttons arre pressed the Recovery GUI and W2K shut down and the system reboots into the text screen rebooting loop described above.

  • Permissions "fixed" but still stuck in endless rebooting... and MORE!

Ok, I'm an idiot and must've messed up my permissions on my main drive. Repairing permissions does nothing for me. On top of that, I have 2 locked internal drives...
So, I have 2 issues which may be related. I believe they both stem from permissions. I need to know if they're linked... will they happen again if I just wipe and reinstall OSX... should I attempt to unlock the drives first or should I fix the OS Boot drive first? The details:
    *ISSUE 1-*
When trying to start up, my Mac Pro will sit on the Apple screen and wheel for a few full minutes before restarting itself. It just repeats that process and cannot boot into OSX. My boot camp Windows XP starts up perfectly. The System tools boot from CD fine. Have run AHT twice - zero hardware issues reported. Using Disk Utility from boot CD I have verified there are no disk problems with the Mac HD.
I found a few threads which I thought could help.
    Example: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=7191812
Every time I repair Permissions, I get a success message, but verify once again to see the same list of differing permissions (most are "normal"). I have not jumped into the terminal to do anything.
I just mounted the tower on my MBP as a target disk in order to back up files. Can mount and read the drive, so I can back up the essential files from that drive.
I found this thread, which I'll assume applies to me: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10020699&#10020699
But, wiping and reinstalling my OS and the digital ton of pro apps I use is the LAST option for me. Oh, and stick with me, my story gets better... I have 2 more drives with essential data... which leads me to:
    *ISSUE 2-*
My 2 additional 1TB internal drives are both locked. When trying to open them (tower in target disk mode, reading from MBP) I get error: "You do not have sufficient access privileges" They are viewable in disk utility. Mount and unmount properly. Disk verification on both returns "volume appears OK." This issue of the drives being locked happened while the system was up and running. It is what prompted me to restart the system. (which began the consistent Non-startups)
I know the info is vague, but, according to the Get Info window, permissions are all set to "custom" privileges (me (admin), "unknown," "everyone"). The "Ignore ownership on this volume" box was ticked ON. Unchecking, remounting, rechecking then remounting had no effect. Again, I have not touched terminal yet. I've found several great threads which seem to cover this issue.
One, in particular: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9985299&#9985299 (ignoring the response from some genius advertising their website advocating "backing up" info), was a good description of my exact circumstances with these drives. I think that post can probably help me... My main concern is that I'm dealing with internal drives as opposed to externals- and I don't know enough about the terminal commands to know whether there's a different line protocol for modifying internal stuff from external stuff.
Now, if that thread is what I need I would just jump into terminal and try unlocking the drives, but I don't want to do that from my MBP. I can, of course, use terminal from the OSX disc, but that doesn't help the problem of the OS not booting up.
    A few extra system details:
    Mac Pro 2.8GHz 8 core (early 2008)
    OS running 10.5.8
    8GB RAM
HD Bay 1 (300GB "Macintosh HD" boot drive-61gb used)*
HD Bay 2 (500GB "Untitled" NTFS WinXP boot camp drive-20gb used)**
    HD Bay 3 (1TB "Media" drive-385gb used)*
    HD Bay 4 (1TB "Projects" drive-1gb used)*
    * Permissions "repaired successfully" - can't boot up
    ** Boots up perfectly
    * Drives locked
I cannot just wipe these drives as they contain a lot of client media. Because I have no access to them, I can't back them up either.
    So, recap:
Are these problems linked or isolated from one another?
Should I attempt to unlock the media drives or fix the OS Boot drive first?
Also, if I reinstall the OSX, how will that effect boot camp? (can I just leave windows alone and hold down option to boot with no issues?)
The deadline for one of my projects is this week and I'd like to resolve this asap. So, please, please help! (I'm woefully inadequate in searching posts- if someone has already seen this kind of discussion- please just re-post links!!)

To rule out a software issue, set it up as new device, without using the latest backup. Set up your settings manually and see if the phone works after that.
If yes, restore from the latest backup. If the problem comes back, the backup contained damaged data causing these issues.

  • Stuck in a Reboot Cycle

    Hey all,
I sync'd my 5G iPod classic up to my new computer earlier and now it's stuck in an endless reboot cycle. It starts turning on (black apple screen), runs for about 30 seconds, and then cuts out and starts booting up again. It's charged up and doesn't respond to being plugged into the computer. I've tried doing the manual reset (holding the click button and menu simultaneously) but that won't snap it out of it. It's been doing this for a couple hours and I don't know how to snap it out of this cycle -- any help you can provide would be appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

Try forcing the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

  • Endless reboot

my iphone has gone into an endless reboot after an OTA update. pls help me fix this. :((

Just in case anyone at apple is paying attention. This has happened to me four times now. Iphone 3G 16GB. The phone rebooted while installing and app (once while syncing an app from iTunes and three times while doing AppStore installs OTA). This leaves the phone completely useless until you do a full recovery on the phone. It is very irritating to be stuck without your phone for a whole day until you can get back to your computer.

my iphone so i can restore it i don't know what to do plz help

I am experiencing the same problem, and i have attempted NO jailbreak or other iphone hacked software. My screen will slowly fade to white, and then go into an endless reboot cycle, or just glow bright white til the battery dies. I have tried restoring with itunes via recovery, and i receive error (2003).
    (EDIT)
I successfully restored my iphone, and it worked GREAT! until i removed it from the cradle, and my screen jumped straight to apple logo, descending into the bottomless pit of reboot cycles.

Did you try rebooting the iPad? You will need to have some battery power for this.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • I was told by itunes my phone needed an update to 6.1.2.  I did it, and now my phone is stuck in a reboot loop, and no wifi, phone, or bluetooth.

I connected my 3gs to my computer, and got a popup from itunes saying there was an update for my phone.  Well i like to keep everything up to date, so I did the update.  After it completed, I no longer have phone, Wifi, and bluetooth.  It also is stuck in a reboot loop.  I really do not know what I can do.  I tried to restore it as a new phone, since i had all my data backed up.
Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

I checked the hosts file, and there is nothing refering to gs.apple.com.  Should there be?
Is it possible to restore it back to 6.1?
No problem; it's just that many people buy what they think are "factory unlocked" phones, but the "factory" is the back room of the shop where they bought it.
gs.apple.com should not be in the hosts file (the only reason it might be there is if some hacking tool had been used on the computer in the past; not just jailbreaking tools, but tools to downgrade the OS and perform other unsupported functions).
You cannot restore back to 6.1; you need to resolve the problem with the latest version. Even if you could revert it would not solve the problem. You need to figure out why iTunes can't communicate with the activation servers. If you have another computer, try restoring on that, or take the phone to an Apple store and let a "genius" deal with it. Or, if your antivirus is Kaspersky, delete it completely, as it's impossible to turn it off completely, and it has taken a dislike to things Apple.

  • Just upgraded my iPad Mini software and now it is stuck in a reboot and won't come on.  Please help!

    Hello.
I just noticed that a software update was available.  I think it was iOS7.  Did not really take note of what it was.  But now my iPad Mini won't come on.  it is stuck in a reboot and has been that way for at least an hour.  Just tried to attach a picture of the screen without success.
If it was a phone, I'd have taken out the battery and just reinserted it but I can't do that with the iPad.
What can I do???  Please help!!!
    Thank you.

Much better to update your iPad's software while it's connected to a wall outlet via the cable and adapter that came with it. Do not update on battery power alone.
