  • Stuck in an Endless Restart Loop

My Mac Pro 8-core running OS 10.5.4 is stuck in an endless restart loop. The problem started when I tried to allow read & write access on my Macintosh HD to another user. Even though I only applied the permission change to my internal hard drive, all my externals suddenly became locked and I could not access them. When going to set permissions on the externals, it was listed as "custom" and I could not alter them. I went to the terminal to try to allow access to the external drives, but the terminal failed to load. That's when I tried restarting my computer and it's now rebooting constantly without ever loading.
    What I've tried so far:
-I can't load the OSX install CD because the computer is unresponsive to the open tray command by holding down the mouse click.
-The computer is unresponsive when I try to start in safe mode.
-The computer is unresponsive when I hold down command option O F to force the tray open with firmware.
-I reset the PRAM by pressing command option P R, this is the only keyboard command that has worked so far, but still nothing.
-I unplugged the computer for 10 minutes and plugged it back in. Still nothing.
Any help on what to do next would be appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem.. my early 2008 3Ghz macro when cold starts up the fans rev up and click its off. this repeats for up to five minutes, then i get a chime and then it shuts off. this is repeated for a will as if it is warming up. after about ten minutes it gets as far as finishing booting up and still shuts off. only after about 15 minutes this operating system is stable and does not shut off.
when the computer is fully warmed up it shuts off and restarts fine..
it has recently had a new logic board. can it be the power supply..
please any one got any ideas???

  • IPod Classic is stuck on a restarting loop, how do I fix it without erasing any of the data?

My iPod Classic(160G) is stuck in a restarting loop and I don't know how to fix it.
It will turn on so I can see the Apple logo, then it will shut off and do it all over again untill the battery is drained.
It charges without problems; my laptop won't recognize that there is an iPod plugged in so iTunes doesn't work.
I would love to be able to fix the problem without erasing any data because I have lots of songs that I no longer have on any computer anymore.
I would appreciate some help, as long as it won't erase any of the data, thanks.

I let my 8 year old listen to the IPod that my eldest son gave to me. My 8 year old also likes to take pictures with the IPod. Anyways, she unknowingly put a password on it and tried too many times to unlock it, now it's disabled. How do I enable it without erasing any of the music or pictures?!

  • Airport Express Stuck in a Restart Loop

I have an Airport Extreme that is stuck in a restart loop. I had tried to set it up to extend an Airport Extremes wireless network but it didn't work. Now the Express restarts as soon as it boots. When you plug it in the orange light comes on for 30-45 seconds before flashing green then off and then solid orange for 30-45 seconds. It just reaptes this partern. I have tried both soft and hard resets and in boht cases it does the flashing orange but then resumes the solid orange for 30-45 seconds flash green then of pattern. I have tried plugging in a network cable and found that during the 30-45 seconds of orange the computer reports that the cable is plugged in with no ip address, during the fraction of a second that the light is green the computer gets an ip address and then shows disconnected when the light turns off. Any suggestions?

It sounds like power issue to me.. and the express is a sealed unit.. just take them back if still under warranty or replace. There are various posts about how to cut them open but the end result is fairly horrible looking.

  • Java Console Stuck in Uninstall Restart Loop

Hi! So, recently, I've noticed that I've been having issues that seem to be Java based, so I've decided to do a full uninstall/reinstall of Java. I uninstalled all Java based applications via control panel, assuming it'd be uninstalled from Firefox as well, allowing me to just reinstall.
However, I have three versions of the Java Console showing up on my Add-ons page, and all three are stuck in an infinite "The add-on will be uninstalled when Firefox is restarted" loop. No matter how many times I shut down/restart Firefox (even as an administrator), it won't uninstall.
I also can't manually uninstall because the extension folder is no longer in my Profile folder.

  • I've restored my desktop to factory settings and now it's stuck in a restarting loop. Help?

I restored my HP desktop to factory settings and it seemed like it worked, but it asked if I wanted to restart the computer so I clicked yes. Now it cycles through the restarting process and won't stop. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, and a bunch of other things and nothing is working. What do I do?

Hello amandandye, Can you advise how you restored your system? Did you use the HP Recovery Restore Disk set or the F-11 method at the bootup of the system.
If you used the HP Recovery Restore Disk set, did you remove the last disk from the optical drive?

  • Satellite L500-1DT: HDD Recovery of Win 7 is stuck in endless reboot loop

This is a detailed bug report so please bear with me.
If you can help, or can confirm you've had the same happen to you, I'll be grateful.
I've owned several Toshiba laptops before and I even used to work for Toshiba so rest assured I like the machine. But I've got a problem with its recovery software. I just bought a laptop, Satellite L500-1DT with Windows 7 64 bit, on behalf of a non-techie who lives elsewhere. Since I know from experience that I will occasionally have to field panic calls along the lines of "it's become too slow", "how do I get rid of the accumulated junk", "maybe it's got a virus" and so on, the first thing I checked was the automatic recovery, i.e. how to bring the HD back to "as new" state.
So I booted into the machine, answered the questions until I got into the OS proper, and then ran the "make a recovery DVD" program. Double layer DVD verified ok. With the freshly made DVD, I swapped the supplied HD for a spare I had (much smaller: only 40 GB instead of 320) and booted the rescue DVD hoping that it would remake me a clean system on the blank drive.
It did repartition the drive according to its scheme, with more or less half the space for Windows and the other half for Data including the recovery files. It did install the system in the Windows partition. It then rebooted into the installed Windows 7 to finalize the installation. There, trouble began: an endless loop of reboots for hours until I stopped it.
    Loop:
    * reboot
    * black screen with bright 4-colour windows logo "starting windows"
    * black screen with light blade and "setup is preparing your computer for first use"
    * blue "welcome" white screen with "please wait" and horizontal bar with green blob, saying "Finishing the installation may take several minutes. Please dont interrupt or shutdown the computer!"
    * blue screen saying it's shutting down
    Repeat the above forever.
I have seen it reboot way over 10 times over the course of several hours. And every time it pretends it's the first time it does that. Surely that's not normal!
I tried stopping it with ctrl-alt-del and task manager but the white screen would go on top of even the task manager, making it hard to kill any processes or even inspect what they were. I stopped it by holding down the power button until it switched off. Then when it rebooted it said if I wanted safe mode. I tried that. It went into the routine above and at some point it said it couldn't proceed with the installation if it was in safe mode. So it rebooted into regular mode and then... finished! It finally broke out of the endless loop!
Then it asked me all the usual questions about language, registration etc, as it had done the first time I had turned it on. This seemed good. I finally got back into a newly installed OS and all seemed fine, except I later discovered that some programs that were there before were not installed.
With bravery bordering stupidity (*) I even re-did the procedure on the supplied hard disk instead of my spare one: first I nuked the windows partition, then I did rescue from the HD (with F8), not with the DVD I had made. Result: similar rigmarole, with endless reboots.
After I stopped it, it sort-of-worked, as above, but now some other programs were missing, notably the Toshiba DVD player.
(*) motivated by: better try this now, with the computer here and all my tools and other computers ready at hand, than when the computer is away at its owner's home and that's the only thing left to try with me at the other end of a phone line. Been there before.
Now, that specific one (DVD player) I could download from the support page and it installed fine; but what else might be missing or not working that I didn't notice? Clearly the restore process isn't working as it should.
Am I the first or only one to whom this happens? Am I doing anything wrong? Is there anything else I should try?
I need to make sure this restore procedure works flawlessly while I still have the computer in my hands. If it doesn't, there's no chance I'm going to be able to do a remote reinstall for my non-techie once I am asked to clean up the laptop over the phone a few months from now.
    Thanks in advance
[Update: while looking for the right place where I could post this I found that other people are reporting the same problem. It's definitely a bug in the distributed recovery software for W7-64, not an isolated problem of my machine. See for example
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=49421&tstart=0 where user kwarc is describing the same symptoms with a Satellite L505.

I am glad to report some unexpected SUCCESS!
I left the computer at what it was doing when I wrote the previous
post. I came back to it an hour later or so (I had stopped counting
the reboots, though occasionally I'd hear that typical chime from the
other room, saying it was doing one more cycle) and I noticed
something slightly different: the white screen with "finishing the
installation may take several minutes" had a blue blob, not a green
blob, in the progress bar, and the blob was rectangular rather than
rounded. Very odd! Something different had happened, like a change of
theme. And a little while after that, the process really finished and
I got to the white screen that asks about what language etc etc, like
when I first turned on the new computer.
    Great!
All I can conclude from this experience:
Even a reinstall that works will DEFINITELY involve many reboots that
seem to be getting nowhere. Apparently, progress is being made, even
though it looks like the process is stuck in a loop of reboots.
It would just be nice if it said something like "Before I finish
restoring, I'm going to have to reboot 26 times, please hang on; now
doing cycle 8 of 26". (Numbers are made up.) It doesn't, but just
    knowing about it is helpful.
Perhaps worth redoing the install once more and making a note of how
long it really takes from beginning to end when it does work.
I still don't know if the process I described in the first post was
really stuck because of some other error or whether it would have
ended eventually. If I wanted to be really sure I could re-restore
everything on that hard disk once more.
I have no idea whether wiping all partitions from the disk before
reinstalling did any good or not: it shouldn't have made a difference
since, as I said, I noticed that the first thing the restore program
did was redo all the partitions itself. On the other hand we have
experimental proof that the restore can work on a HD without any
    partitions.
Thanks again PauPau---the most useful thing you said, for me, was the
data point that for you it had worked. That's what made me try again
and leave the computer on indefinitely through the innumerable
    reboots, just in case.
I'll repost a definitive answer on how long a successful restore
process should take once I get round to redoing it on the supplied 320
    GB HD.

  • Windows 10 Technical Preview installation stuck in a restarting loop

    Hi all,
I had win10 running pretty well until I had to roll back to Win8 which was originally installed on my laptop when I purchased it. Long story short, the recovery had some issues and it gave me an error about some unexpected error during installation. So I
changed the setup.exe value of one of the registries. Now, the error is gone but it keeps on restarting after the "Installing Windows 10 Technical Preview" screen. any ideas???
    thanks!
    --Ben

    Hi Yolanda,
    thanks for the reply.
I did various things. i think i picked the option to go back to previous windows version which turned out to be the previous Win10 build. so i tried again with something else (i forgot which other options i picked on the Recovery menu...) This is when it
crashed and failed to reinstall windows. it showed me a screen with different options, one of them was to go back to the manufacture version. so i picked that but it told me to insert the DVD which didn't come with the laptop when i purchased it. so i
tried again with the previous windows version option and this is when the error occurred. here is the error and how i was told to fix (http://heresjaken.com/the-computer-restarted-unexpectedly-or-encountered-an-unexpected-error-during-installation-of-windows/)
after changing the registry, the error is gone but it's in a loop of attempting to install windows 10 TP and restarting windows. i can't even get to the BIO to change the booting options.... if there is a way, please let me know, i can download the ISO from
the internet and boot it off from there.
i do understand this is a preview version and my laptop is not my primary computer. i had some issues with the Cisco AnyConnect client. so i had to roll back.... yes i do have all my files backed up.
    thanks!

  • Tiger Endless Restarts Loops

Before installing Virtuedesktops, all was fine with my Macbook.
Now, after the installation, the Mac have problems in rebooting. It keeps restarting after showing the desktop and I can't even open any folder or run any programs.
    What I have tried:
1 - Delete the Virtuedesktop files and fodlers --> Nothings happens
2 - Boot in safe mode --> OK but can't do much
    3 - I have reinstall the mac OS X --> Same problem.
4 - In safe mode. Archive the "Previous Systems" files into my external HDD and delete the "Previous Systems" files in the Mac.---> Still similar problems.
    Question:
Do I have to reformat the HDD and reinstall the OS X?
This method will be a much longer process. How do I reinstall my old apps? Do I just drag and drop the "Previous Systems" files back to the Mac?
PS: Sorry - I'm new to Mac. Just bought 2 weeks ago.

The test indicates the old account probably has either a corrupted preference file or login item.
While in Safe boot mode, go to System Preferences -> Accounts & check the list of login items you see, looking for anything related to Virtual Desktops or anything else that looks like it might not belong there. (Some items, like iTunesHelper or iCalAlarmScheduler are from Apple & should be left in place.) "Hovering" the pointer over a listed item will pop up its location, which may help you decide. You can also list anything you are wondering about on the list here & we will try to help you decide about it.
To deal with preferences, open ~/Library/Preferences/ & look for a ".plist" file related to Virtual Desktop, probably starting with "com.virtualdesktops" or just "virtualdesktops." (~/ means your home folder.)
Removing the offending item to the desktop or trash & logging out & back in should solve the problem. If not, post back with your results.

  • P55-GD55 Stuck in a Restart Loop

I was trying to overclock my system (my first time) and I had it running Prime 95, CPU-Z and CoreTemp while at 4.0Ghz. The test had been running for 10-15 minutes when I saw the voltage in CPU-Z drop, a few seconds later it crashed (no blue screen or error message just suddenly shut off). When I tried to restart it turns on for about 2 seconds then off for about 5 then back on, repeating constantly.
I don't think this could be related to cooling because it was running around 70 degrees Celsius at the point of the crash (under Intel's recommended max of 74). I also don't think my voltages were to high (mind you this overclock was not meant for everyday use) at about +.250 for the core voltage, 1.30 VTT and 1.900 PLL.
I have very little notion of where to start looking for the problem but I do have access to a second identical and working PC I can swap parts with if absolutely necessary which may prove useful. I have already tried a CMOS reset by unplugging, waiting a few minutes then swapping the jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3, and finally switching it back and attempting to boot.
I would appreciate any help or advice you could give me regarding my problem. I also apologize if my writing and/or spelling has problems, I am typing this on my phone.
    System:
    P55-GD55 Mobo (Bios version 1.7)
    Intel Core i5 750
    G.Skill 2GBx2 1600Mhz DDR3
    ATI HD 5770
    Antec Earthwatts 650watt PSU
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler
    Antec 300 Case
    1x120mm fan, 1x140mm fan

    Thanks for the reply Mark.
I am fairly certain the CMOS is reset, just to make sure I removed the battery for about 6 hours. It should be back at stock settings now.
I'll have to try changing the power supply out and see if I can get it to boot. That does seem likely since I think the board has a restart after A/C power loss feature which could be the reason it keeps trying to start.

  • Stuck in a restart loop

    Hi guys,
finally ditched the pc and bought a mac mini duo core!
Problem is the first thing I done was download the software updates and then install them. The OS told me to restart my machine which I did but now when it boots up it comes up with a message:
"You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button".
If i hold down the power button for a few seconds the mac turns off. Pressing the power button again turns it on but the same message is displayed. Basically my machine at the moment is useless as all i get is the message and cant get beyond that to the desktop!
Where is the restart button? I presume its meant to be a clickable button on the screen yeah? Or is it on the Apple keyboards? (I use a generic non apple keyboard)
How do I get my mac fired up again???

Sounds like you're getting a "kernel panic," a type of system crash usually (but not necessarily) caused by a USB peripheral the system doesn't like. Sometimes KPs are a bad RAM module, and occasionally it's some sort of corruption in the system software. Just a hunch, but in this case it could be the non-Apple keyboard you mentioned.
Go ahead and shut down like you've been doing by pressing the power button for a few seconds. Now disconnect your keyboard and any other peripherals (except the monitor) and hit the power button again. If all goes well and you get to the Desktop this time, then the keyboard or possibly some other USB peripheral you had connected is likely the problem. Give it a shot and see what shakes out.

  • 3GS Stuck in endless restore loop (Error 1002)

    Hello,
So I woke up yesterday to find my 3GS (with iOS4) was displaying the 'Connect to iTunes' message for no apparent reason. After connecting it to iTunes, a message popped up in iTunes saying I had to enter a password on the iPhone in order to access it, which I couldn't do as the Phone was showing the 'Connect to iTunes' message.
After looking through several Apple help articles I put the iPhone into recovery mode in order to try to restore it. However, every time the progress bar on the iPhone screen hangs just before finishing, and iTunes says there was an error ( *Error 1002* ). I have tried the restore numerous times now with the same results, and have tried all the solutions in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275
At the moment I am left with an iPhone that I cannot use, I would be grateful for any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Jack

Heh Jack did you ever get a response to this??
I'm getting the same problem now and there doesn't seem to be many people saying that it got sorted!!!
    Any advice appreciated.

  • Ipod stuck in endless restore loop...

I,ve had my ipod for a while, and all was well, untill one day i got the screen telling me to use itunes to restore. so i went to my computer and went on itunes and it asked me if i wanted to restore, so i did.
unfortunately it did nothing and it still had the same message on it, even after countless restores.
ive tryed all my usb slots, 3 different computers, formating it with the hp formatter ( error: media device is write-protected) and changing the drive letter in computer management (tells me that its unreadable or something, cant remember, but it doesn't show it as an ipod), ive try different vesions of itunes, but nothing works....
i took it to a nearby apple product selling shop and they said it might have to be repaired...
    is this true?
    btw: its on a pc.

Have you tried to do a Restore on a Mac? If you got the same result then it needs for a service

  • Stuck in Restart Loop after Software Update

I recently ran the update to 10.5.3 a few days ago, and thankfully, it's been working great... until today, when I installed two seemingly innocuous updates via Software Update: one for the latest version of Quicktime and another for Apple Brother Print Drivers 1.1. After restarting, everything fell apart. Several of my start-up apps unexpectedly quit after login, and other apps either failed to launch when I tried opening them, or they simply got stuck in an endless loop of bouncing in the dock. I couldn't even force-quit them because they weren't responding at all. Thinking this strange behavior to be symptoms of some permissions issue, I popped in the Leopard installation CD and ran a permissions repair. It fixed several cryptic problems, one for something to do with Java and another for the cups folder, which I assume has some relation to the printer driver update. I then tried selecting my start-up disk and restarting, but the problem only got worse. Now my iMac is stuck in a restart loop. I tried booting in safe mode, but that hasn't worked. If worse comes to worst, I'll have to revert to a Time Machine backup, or else run an Archive & Install, but I'm trying to avoid that. Any suggestions? I'm also curious to know if these two updates had any relevance to these problems, and if so, what the cause may be. I'm thinking the printer driver is to blame, but then again that's only a stab in the dark. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a Safe Boot again but unfortunately that didn't work, so I had to go ahead and do an Archive & Install. Now everything is up and running; however, I'm going to stay away from that print driver until I figure out exactly what went wrong. I did a little research and saw it listed on MacUpdate.com, where it was posted along with an interesting note: apparently, the update can only be applied if there is already a Brother print driver installed (in this case there was), and in addition to that, the printer must either be connected (and I assume on for the computer to know it's connected in the first place) or have an active print queue for the update to even be listed in Software Update. Strangely enough, neither of these conditions held true when I saw it in Software Update... so I think that might have been the cause, but I can't be sure. I was wondering if anyone else has installed this update successfully, and if so, what they did?
    Thanks again for the suggestions.

  • Macbook Pro stuck in restart loop with fresh install

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) that I have been running Snow Leopard on up until now. I had been meaning to upgrade to Mavericks for a while, but had just never gotten around to it. Over the last month or so, my Macbook has been running really slow, hanging on the spinning beachball every few minutes for a few seconds (sometimes up to a minute or so). So I figured a clean start might be the best way to go, and while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade to Mavericks.
I backed up all my data, and then I created a Mountain Lion bootable usb (I had trouble making a Mavericks bootable usb from Snow Leopard, and since I had bought Mountain Lion for my desktop, I just decided to do a fresh install of that, and then upgrade to Mavericks). I had no problem booting to the usb, erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. However, after the install on the usb, my mac restarted and got stuck in a restart loop. It will chime, show the apple logo and spinning gears for a few seconds, then the gears stop spinning, and then the mac immediately restarts (this time displaying a message saying the mac has recovered from a shutdown in a number of languages), and the same thing happens again.
I was able to boot into the recovery partition, checked the permissions, found some that needed to be fixed, ran the repair permissions, verified the disk and was told the disk appears okay. Tried to then restart and same thing.
I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and none of these change anything. I booted in single user mode and ran fsck -fy, and recieved a message saying modifications were made, rebooted, same thing.
I have booted in verbose mode and the system restarts at the same point every time, right after displaying a message that says
SMC::smcReadKeyAction Error: (and then something with "BEMB", it goes by really fast so its hard to read exactly)
I have managed to boot into safe mode, but this has not made a difference. On one of my boots into safe mode, I went ahead and made a Mavericks bootable usb, and restarted the process: wiped the drive, installed mavericks, but I am in the exact same situation. I can still boot into safe mode.
I have seen some other issues that people have posted, but most involve the system freezing after the apple screen (not restarting) or do not involve freshly formatted HDs.
I'm just tying to find out if this is a hard drive issue, or if my mac itself needs to be retired. It has had a pretty long life (being 5 years old), and one of the RAM bays doesn't work (it is only running 4GB of ram, not sure if that can cause a problem with the boot cycle).
Sorry if thats a lot of information, I've been trouble shooting this for a few days. But thanks for any help you can offer!
    A strange note:
-when booting from the mavericks usb, I got stuck in the restart loop a couple of times. I managed to get past this by clicking the mousepad a few times right after the gears finished spinning. The mouse became visible, the apple screen shifted color a bit (went from a bluish gray tint to an orangish gray tint), the mouse became visible, and I got to the reinstall menu as normal. As far as I can tell the clicking may have been coincidental, but it was the only time I was able to boot the usb, and I wasn't going to risk restarting to test that, and then not be able to boot again.

Hey, thank you for your reply! I didn't have everything backed up, but I have a lot of my important stuff saved, though, so that's somewhat of a relief..
As far as my hard drive is concerned, would I have to send it in somewhere to get it fixed or would I just have to get a brand new one? If so, how much? Sorry if I seem a bit amateur, but this computer is my first personal computer, and I'm really lost without it!
