Stuck in "Mac OS X 10.5 Setup Assistant"

Hi there
Subject: Stuck in 'Mac OS X Setup Assistant'
I am stuck in "Mac OS X Setup Assistant" After rebooting following software upgrade, the Setup Assistant appears unexpectedly each time Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard starts up, and continues to appear even after completing all pages in the assistant,
I followed the steps advised by Joseph Kriz on 09 February 2008, in the enclosed webpage and achieved safe boot.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306998
However the window denoting safe boot has only login in button. No back button, no restart button. No other buttons, even after I pressed power button quickly, a few times.
I am stuck.

This may be an issue with the pde plugins. PDE stands for print dialog extension and are included with vendor drivers to provide access to printer features not supported by the core printing system. If you are using a Power PC driver (or sharing it from the G4 to the MacTel) then that may be a possible cause. See if HP offers a Universal Binary driver for your model.

    Hello!
My mac suddenly booted into console only.
The system.log stated 'AuthorizationRef doesn't have a username' and 'ifcstart crashed'.
After reading related posts I renamed local.nidb to local.nidb.bad, to no avail.
The mac just hangs with a blue screen.

    Hi
Can you target disk mode this mac to another mac? If yes then backup any critical data you need. I would not bother copying applications as it would be best if you reinstalled them instead. Thats if there is data already on the drive? The information being logged seems to indicate this is a fresh install? The Setup Assistant can't launch and other bootstrap processes are failing because of this.
Can you boot OK from the Installer disk or does it still go into console when you do try?
If it boots OK simply reformat and reinstall. Its possible that the internal hard drive is having a problem, possibly reformatting the drive may get you over the problem or may an indicate an issue with the drive that a replacement drive will cure. If you are still having problems then maybe it may be a deeper problem. Depending on which mac it is sometimes the IDE or SATA cable that connects the drive to the main board develops a problem. In which case the drive should not require replacing. These sorts of problems are better diagnosed and repaired if you take your mac to your nearest authorized repair specialist. If its under warranty and it turns out to be a warranty repair then you should pay nothing.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • IMac stuck at Setup Assistant when booting

I have a iMac that is about 4 months old. I have it set up with 3 accounts (1 administrator and 2 regular limited users). All of a sudden on a reboot I get no hard drive icons or dock and a setup assistant message. I actually went through the setup assistant again and reregistered and it still just comes up. Seems like I am locked out of everything. Anyway, I actually re-installed the OS and still same problem.

  • Setup Assistant loops after iTunes 7.5 & QuickTime 7.3 software update

    Hi,
I have installed Leopard a few days ago and had no problem at all.
But a few minutes ago, I just completed a software update (including iTunes 7.5 and Quicktime 7.3) on my Mac Book 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Since the mandatory restart, Leopard loops through the following:
    1. Logging screen appears. (I enter my username / password)
    2. Leopard's installation setup assistant launches. No button from the menu bar works.
    3. When I finish the setup assistant, goes back to step 1.
    Any idea?!?

  • How do I get rid of the Microsoft Setup Assistant loop? I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word, and stuck in a loop?

I migrated my software/documents from another laptop so don't have the disk to reinstall. Please help! Can't open any Microsoft Office software, like Word (for 2008), and stuck in a loop?
Whenever I select Word Microsoft Setup Assistant appears, asks for feedback, then after selecting okay (both on saying yes or no to feedback) goes on to a registration page. When I click on this it says I've already registered so I just click okay, and then move on to a update page. After this, if I click on Word, the process repeats itself.
As I said, I don't have the disk to reinstall, and can't find the Office Settings to delete as many pages have suggested I should try. Safe Boot restarting also hasn't worked... Really stuck and need Word very soon for work.
If you can help, that would be great, and feel free to ask any questions about the situation as I'm not an expert here.
    Cheers,
    Jack

First, export your contact from iCloud.com and save them on your computer in a safe spot some where (like you desktop).  Use this to help you do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3606
Next, on both of your devices, go to Settings > iCloud and turn on contacts and select Merge. Then turn off contacts and select 'Delete form my [device]' when prompted.
Now go back to iCloud.com and select a contact (yes they will all be messed up again) and select Command+A on a Mac or Control+A on a PC to select all of the contacts.  Tap the delete key on your keyboard (or right click /control click a contact and select delete).
You iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com should not be empty for contacts.
Go back to Settings > iCloud on both devices and turn on contacts again (you should not see merge this time).
Next, go back to iCloud.com and import your contacts (those exported .vcards).  You can either drag and drop them into the empty contacts list in your web browser, or you can use the gear icon to import.
You cleaned up contacts should import correctly into iCloud.com and sync to both of your devices.
    Good luck.

  • Why are Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant forcing me to copy everything from an old mac?

    Hi,
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5).  I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini.  I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini.  Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though.  All the check boxes are greyed out.  Clicking on them does not uncheck them.  This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini.  Then the Mini won't restart.   It won't even boot into safe mode.  It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.  Does anyone know why those check boxes are greyed out and how to fix them.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it.

  • After Leopard install Mac OSX Setup Assistant is in a constant loop

I have a friend who I persuaded to switch to mac a few years ago and he recently installed Leopard without much success on his second mac (it was fine on his macbook pro 2.13ghz), a Power PC G5 1.8ghz - 1.25 gb ram. When I had a look at it it appears to be stuck in Mac OSX Setup Assistant mode - i.e. when you put the info in and the Screen says "enjoy your computer" or whatever it just comes back to the same Setup page. (What's weird is can't get to the end unless it has an internet signal - wireless at his place and ethernet at mine)
I'm guessing something went wrong during installation as when I restart with the Leopard disc in and hold "c" Leopard install launches but only shows drivers and some languages need to be installed. I copied all important files via target mode and it shows that the Computer is "10.5". I'm guessing the full installation was interrupted. There doesn't appear to be a way to do a complete re-install. I ran Tech-Tool and Disk Warrior to rebuild and verify permissions etc. No joy!
I'd like to do a full re-install of Leopard but I can't. As I have all important info backed up I guess I might have to completely wipe the disc and install Leopard on the blank disc - should this be okay as I've never done that before?
    Any other suggestions appreciated.

If I press go back ...it just goes back to the Welcome screen.
I should mention that if I try and select anything that needs to be opened in a window from the Apple menu nothing opens up. For example if I choose System Preferences it will show System Preferences in the top menu but no window will open.

  • Setup Assistant is stuck in migrating from an iMac to an iMac

    Hi all.
Migrating from a 2-yr old iMac to a new iMac.
At Apple's suggestion, used Setup Assistant with a FireWire connection.
Started at 9 PM Friday last night.
Went to bed at 10:30 when it said still 3 hours remaining.
This morning, at 7 AM, it said "About 8 minutes remaining".
Now, almost 1 1/2 hour later, it's still saying "About 8 minutes remaining".
So. It's stuck. What now? Won't be able to reach Apple for another 1/2 hour, and then I'll be at work...
Do I Force Quit Setup Assistant? CAN I Force Quit Setup Assistant. Should I physically pull the FireWire cable?
And if I can, then what? Wipe the disk, re-install OS? Then what? Re-do the same thing (use Setup Assistant)? To eventually get the same result???
    What a pain!
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! (I'll carry the iPad th follow this thread during the day).
P.S. Monday morning, should I sell my shares???

My two cents and maybe someone else will come in to correct me, but I wouldn't trust the transfer even if it appears at first glance to be OK. There might have been Directory corruption on the source computer which was preventing the transfer from completing. You'll have to do a hard shutdown and remove the cable. Then I would first erase and then reinstall the system and bundled software on the new Mac using the two discs that came with the computer. When that's done go back to the source computer, the old Mac, open up Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair the Disk. To repair, see "Try Disk Utility."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
If repairs were needed and the result is successful, then boot back normally and again from Disk Utility, repair Permissions. If no Disk repairs were needed proceed with a Permissions repair booted from the Mac's drive, not the Install Disk.
Start over. You will get a new Setup Assistant and try the transfer now.

You do not need the Setup Assistant; in fact, you do not need any software on an external hard drive. I have two LaCie's; I erased the drive as soon as I plugged it in. You will need to format it anyway because most hard drives come Windows formatted. So, if you only want to use it with the Mac, highlight it in Disk Utility and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and the GUID Partition scheme under Options. While doing that, it will erase the drive (and get rid of the LaCie software) - once finished, your drive is ready to use for Time Machine or any other backup plans you have for it.

  • Help! How can I take out the mini-disc stuck in mac?

Help! How can I take out the mini-disc stuck in mac?
I insert it into the mac, but the OS cannot load the disc and the disc cannot be ejected even i pressed the "eject" button.

This happened to a family members macbookpro. A mini-cd inserted, couldn't be mounted or ejected by the drive.
I cut a rectangle from a cereal box about two inches wide and 6 inches long. Abour an inch and half from one end in the middle I cut a notch and bent it down a little.

I then inserted it slowly into the drive notch down and slowly pulled out. I did this few times and caught the mimi-cd and removed it. The drive has worked flawlessly for several years
A few days after this happened I was in BestBuy and an Apple rep was there displaying new Apple products. I asked him about it and he said they have a tool that ***** it out.

  • My new mac has two drives. Will setup assistant transfer files correctly?

My new iMac has a hard disc drive and a solid state drive. Does setup assistant transfer files from the old Mac to the new one by placing the files on one drive or on both? With setup assistant can I designate the SSD as the destination for transferring applications and the HDD as the destination for documents, music, photos, movies, etc.?
After completing the transfer with setup assistant will I have to move applications from the new iMac's HDD to its SSD?
Will the setup assistant have any effect on Lion in the new iMac?

That's helpful. Is there any impact to quality? It's not practical for me to USB or Ethernet it, since I don't have adapters and storage, etc. It is, however, convenient for me to let the laptop sit for a day (the estimated time) and just take in data at it's own pace on Bluetooth.
Is there going to be any loss of quality using this? Choppy songs, etc.

  • Does Setup Assistant delete files on the new mac?

I just got a new Macbook Pro, and I'm trying to decide how to transfer all of my files from my old computer to my new one. The problem is that I'm a little paranoid about losing any files on the new computer. I once accidentally wiped my entire system on the old one after an incorrect restore and lost several important folders required for certain applications because they weren't included on the OS reinstallation CD. I don't want that to happen again. I've been reading about Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant, and it seems like they do pretty much the same thing, but I want to make sure that any files currently on the new Mac aren't deleted if I use Setup Assistant to transfer my old files.
Any advice for this particularly paranoid Mac user would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Paranoia is understandable; however, misplaced. Just follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Help ! Going crazy : stuck with leopard Setup Assistant

I've installed and used Leopard since its launch.
Experienced some minor problems : iCal stopped when trying to open a Task... Bin could not empty on securized mode.
Today, after the same problem, I had to force to reboot and now it's running to Mac OS X Setup Assistant again and again, as if it never got it.
    What can I do ?
    Thanks for your help.

I don't know if it's the first rule of website design, but people forget their passwords all the time. If you really want people to use your services, Microsoft, you should remove this ridiculous loop from your system.
The most commong problem in all these cases is the following:
A user signed up for Skype account "john.doe456" a few years ago using an email address [email protected]
Later the user linked their Microsoft account [email protected] to the Skype account
Now it's March 2015 and they try to reset their Skype account password and request a password reset using the [email protected] email.
Users will always be forwarded to the Microsoft account password recovery. To reset the Skype account password you need to request the password recovery to the [email protected] registered email address of the Skype account. Many users have forgotten what their Skype account registered email was because they haven't updated them for long. In this case you need to contact Skype CS and get your primary account email changed. The starting point for this process is to fill out the form for "I don't know my registered email address" here:

Hi MemphisBELLE, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You've done about everything you can without The Install Disk, if your friend doesn't have that then call Apple with the Serial# handy, or seek an Apple Store/Provider.
