Stuck in Restore Loop after 3.1 Upgrade

Can anybody help? My iPhone is now stuck in a constant restore loop and I cannot downgrade to 3.0.1. My iPhone is effectively now a brick.
This issue has really got me seething at Apple. Do they not test these things?

Just tried to update to 3.1, should have read the forum first. Had I seen the problems everyones been having I never would have tried it. When the update was finishing the iphone disconnected from itunes then the screen showed that I need to connect iphone to itunes. Tried reconnecting a million times, rebooted my computer, and tried to reset my iphone. It won't turn off or reset. When I was finally able to get it connected to itunes again, it says it must be restored. I freaked out, because my pictures didn't get backed up (even though I had them checked) and I can't afford to lose them, or any of my contacts and calendar events that also didn't manage to get backed up. I finally gave in and decided to restore, and it won't even try to restore. My phone worked perfectly well before this update. To top everything off I'm going out of town tomorrow and now have no phone, no ipod, and no internet. Any suggestions would be appreciated, the only option I have for now is to go to AT&T tomorrow and rant for them to pull the info off my phone if possible and restore it for me. HELP!

  • Can't sync iPod and stuck in restore loop after upgrading to iTunes 7

I cannot restore my iPod using my desktop, so I use my laptop to do it and it seems to work and I can transfer music to it, but when I reconnect it to my desktop, it tries to erase and resync with the other iTunes library. It seems to go through and I can see the status of all the songs being copied to the iPod, but when I then disconnect to see if it happened, it shows no songs. When I reconnect it to either the laptop or the desktop, it tells me to restore it. Only the laptop will restore, the desktop gets in the restore loop. I tried the selective startup, the drive letter change, the reinstall of iTunes, nothing works. Can anyone tell me if this is an iPod error or a software problem?

Try the following. I expect you will have to let the battery fully drain.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 4404 WLC stuck in boot loop after upgrade

In prepping for the upgrade to 4.1.185.0 I've got two controllers at different sites stuck in a boot loop after applying 4.0.219.0. Units will not even get to the <ESC> option menu.
    ANy ideas?

Did you clear the configuration on the controller by using Option 5 in the boot menu? This will corrupt the boot image. You should not choose the clear config (option 5) from the boot menu on controllers running 3.2.78.0, 3.2.116.21, 3.2.150.6 or 3.2.150.10, 3.2.171.5 or 3.2.171.6, 4.0.155.5 or 4.0.179.8 and 4.0.179.11.

  • Imac 24" stuck in loop after log in, upgrade SL

    Hi Folks,
I installed SL yesterday evening successfully , and this morning when starting up, my imac freezes just after log in, it seems to be stuck in a loop and does not go on...:(
I tried re changing user password, verify&repair, Pram Reset,i reinstalled SL, but it nothing helps, still stuck in tha loop
    anybody has an idea?

If it freezes after just logging into a user account, chances are good that something in that account's home folder is the culprit. The most likely suspect is an incompatible login item in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. A Safe Boot disables (among other things) login items, so if doing that avoids the freeze, open the preference & check out those items for anything unusual or not from Apple that may need to be updated or removed.
Tip: if you hover the pointer over the name of an item in that list for a few seconds, its path will pop up. This usually gives you a clue about where it came from even if the name itself does not.

  • Random iPhone crashes and reboot loop after iOS 7 upgrade

    Hi all
Since I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 7, I suffer from random crashes/resets, where my iPhone reboots and enters a reboot loop (Apple logo, black screen, reboot, Apple logo, black screen, reboot, etc) that I can only exit by restoring the device (resetting doesn't help).
    Some more information
    a) The device: iPhone 4, 32 GB, has never been jailbroken, and has never shown any similar issues before.
    b) The crashes/reboots: I haven't been able yet to find a pattern when and why they happen. I had reboots when searching for an app, when pluging in the wall charger, when entering the access code, and even when doing nothing at all (iPhone in my pocket). The only constant is the reboot loop after the crash.
    c) What I tried so far: I restored the device several times, using normal restore (with the iTunes logo) and DFU mode (black screen). After that, I recovered from a recent backup (takes some hours), and everything is ok again - for some hours, until the next crash and reboot loop. I also set up the device as a new phone, and there it seems stable, so I exclude a hardware issue. I tried quite a few of the advices that I found when googling for reboot loops: reset all settings (this led to an another immediate crash and reboot loop), disable app background refresh, etc.
I've been using this device for my daily business. With the current instability (and the couple of hours it takes to bring it back to life again), it became more or less useless. I wish I could downgrade again (I know that I can't). My assumption is that either iOS 7, or some incompatible app or some corrupt setting is causing this situation. But I don't know how to proceed to isolate and eliminate the issue. I really would like to avoid setting up everything from scratch again.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    All,
First of all, sorry for my half-finished post above. While typing, I was interrupted, and by reflex I hit CMD-S. Unfortunately, the stupid interface of Apple's support website interpreted that as a submit command. I tried to complete my text with the update function, but when finally hitting the submit button, I got an error message, and all my updated text was gone... No way to bring it back, and also no way to delete the half-baked posting. Quite frustrating.
Now, to complete what I started above:
In my case, the problem definitely had something to do with the springboard process (an iOS system 'app' that manages the iOS homescreens) and the watchdog process (another iOS system 'app' that monitors certain things on your phone and that can initiate a restart when it thinks the phone is frozen). In the folder '/Users/<your account>/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your phone>' I could see what caused my crashes; they were all 'stack+SpringBoard' and the reason in these crash log files was 'Watchdog timeout'.
The following two forum posts helped me:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1676330?start=30&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20794982#20794982
I'm quite sure that my issues had to do with the 'application map' that is mentioned in the above posts. So far, Ive been thinking that it was just too large (as in the case of Andi1996 [second link above]), but jmbladen's observation seems not to support this. So, the absolute number might not the source of the problem, but I still assume that something went wrong with my application map during the upgrade from iOS6 to iOS7. I remember having stability problems before, as soon as all my 10 home screens were full of apps and newly downloaded apps would generate additional pages (only visible via iTunes). Considering that there are some fundamental changes to how we can organize apps within folders in iOS 7, it can well be that the springboard process just wasn't able to cope with my application map correctly within the 120 seconds before the watchdog process restarts the phone. My massive cleanup action must have fixed this somehow.
@jmbladen: I'm only using iCloud for the 'find my phone' functionality, so all the backup & recovery was done via iTunes from my local harddisk. And there was no temporal pattern for my crashes before. You might suffer from the same symptoms, but probably not because of the same cause.
My advice for anyone affected by random crashes and a reboot loop is to check out the directory with the CrashReporter logs mentioned above to find out what app or process causes the crash. If it's the springboard and watchdog problem, then you should try to clean up your home screens (from iTunes). Maybe the absolute number of apps is not that important, but make sure that you reduce the number of screens. And then sync and backup before you start using the phone again. In my case it helped.
Hope this helps someone else too.
P.S. Once you know the right keywords to search for, you find forum postings back to 2008 / iOS 2 describing exactly the same problem. This reboot loop is a very nasty issue, and it is hard to understand that Apple still hasn't been able to address this, or at least provide some better help on how to get out of it again.

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1603
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. Also, discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user. If the issue remains, Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.

    plz help me.

    hi mate,
your iphone is fine, this is a common problem with the iphone and the usb connection.
if you are getting a 1603 error then, the is a way to resolve it and restore your iphone.
basically put the usb leads into another usb port and restart your pc. it may take a few goes to get it to work but it will.
also make sure you are not connected to the internet and press the control key (i think) and it will let you select the firmware you wan to install, only update to 1.02 firmware, anything higher you will not be able to unlock it with the software that is available.
any problems just reply to this post and i will help you...
    thanks

  • Is everyones 3g still stuck in restore loop or did a fix come out?

Mines still broke, I've seen no resolution. Mine just stuck in restore mode, and when I try to restore or update, it gets stuck in that loop!

My 3G is running iOS4 flawlessly. Have you tried this?
    1) Turn off the phone. Not sleep, totally shut off.
    2) Plug the iPhone cable into the computer. Press and hold the Home button on the phone. While holding it, plug the iPhone cable into the phone. Release the Home button when the iTunes picture appears. This will put the phone into Restore Mode.
    3) In iTunes, select the phone and click Restore.
    Hope this helps!
