Stuck in 'Starting backup, please wait' . Not even the webbased story works. What to do?

As the topic says, last night i attempted to backup my data via FTP, tested connection, everthing was okay. So i went ahead and started the backup. Now it's been stuck at 'Starting backup, please wait..' since yesterday, same goes for the webbased application, when i try to login it works fine until i'm logged in, then the backup window appears and says the same thing. At the moment i cannot access my data, edit anything, or do anything at all for that matter. Anyone got a solution or any tips for this issue? Google didn't help at all.
Sincerely
Kim

  • HELP!!! Not even the 133MAC crew know what to do.

Hey, I have had a search all over the net, looked at a few similar problems, but nothing quite matches my issues, and I haven't wanted to try anything too radical, as I haven't been able to backup my iPhone in a while, due to the problem below...
When I connect my iPhone 3G to my PC, the phone's homesync, everything appears to be normal. I can upload songs, I can get my Photos, create playlists with Genius etc, but then I try to Backup, and it all falls apart...
It will start normally, it says it is syncing, and the striped band moves along the bar. It will then say "Backing Up ****" and the bar will be filled about 2 percent, maybe less [?]. This continues, until it changes to read, Transferring Purchases. It then cycles through a bunch of apps I have downloaded over a Wi-Fi network at another house (Faster internet etc... Source of issues...?) Anyway, if the bar is progressing, its pretty visually indistinguishable to the eye...
And then it stops, and I get an error that says that the iPhone can not be synced, as it has been disconnected.
At first, I tried numerous different types of cords, and then choosing "Transferring Purchases" separately from the Backup option...
Nothing seems to affect it... I HAVE noticed recently, as of today (The problem has spanned a couple of weeks) it no longer prompts me to transfer or lose the purchases. It used to say that if I chose not to Transfer the Purchases, they would be lost in the Backup...
Any help would be extremely appreciated...
    Thankyou in advance.
    Olivier.
PS. Are SMS Messages saved in the Backup Process?

I'll go ya one more on the SMS, they are definitely backed up, along with notes, settings, home screen arrangement and a few other things that my tired little brain can't cough up right now. But I'll definitely confirm the SMS backup for ya!
Now, on to the backup issues. The standard stuff first, what version of the iPhone software, what version iTunes and Windows? Just so I know where to start....
Also, if you wished to switch to the Mac, its only the iTunes library that would have to resync, everything else will merge or simply remain as it is. You don't need to restore your iPhone to switch it to the Mac.
And one last one for ya. Check out Syphone as a way to save your SMS messages directly as text files on your computer.
Ok, that should get you started for a bit!

  • I completely erased the operating system on an old macbook pro. Nothing is left, not even the base system. What to do?

This was stupid, I know. I didn't mean to do it that way, but the laptop (Macbook Pro intel core2duo 15 in) would freeze, was slow to load, and wouldn't let me partition the drive. I kept getting : unable to unmount when partitioning, or some other partition error. I didn't have much on it, so I know that the harddrive wasn't full or anything. I just had it fixed a few months back to boot with a whole new harddrive and motherboard.
I'm getting these same issues on my newer macbook pro come to think of it. this has all started happening to both laptops this month, only the older macbook pro was running snow leopard and the newer one is running mavericks. Nothing else other than my apple id is in common. i was able to erase macintosh HD and reintall mavericks safely without an issue on the newer laptop, but when i tried doing the very same with the older one, the entire operating system went missing.
Anyway, back to the old laptop. I tried loading linux mint onto it just to get it operational. I read on these boards to use rEFIt to load it. The laptop now has rEFIt when it loads, but it won't install anything or run anything else. Not linux mint, not ubuntu. Nothing.
I do not have any of the original disks. I know i can order them from apple, but I don't want to do that if it isn't going to load it anyway.
So i guess my question now is can I get this thing working again without having to take it to a repair shop for hundreds more? I'm trying to save money and have an extra computer for all of us to share. I'm working on my masters myself and the kids' schools are all about macbooks lately.
Please be gentle with me, I'm only trying to get answers and not insults.
    Thank you,
    N.

If you're wanting to put Snow Leopard back on your old laptop and you don't have the original DVDs, you should call Apple Support (800-MY-APPLE   USA) and order the version of SL that came with your MBP. You'll be charged a small fee.

  • Help!! Can someone help me with this message I keep getting before startup, please ?? Here it is: "/Library/Startupitems/Intego Backup Manager Pro" has not been started because it does not  have the proper security settings. Help!?!?

    Hello:
I keep getting this message upon startup. Can't figure out how to address it. Here it is.
"/Library/Startupitems/Intego Backup Manager Pro" has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings.
    Any suggestions?

There's an invisible one name "Icon" according to the error message.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder.  At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
First, make invisible files visible. Find the invisible file in that folder and remove it. Please be sure you are looking in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder. There is another one in the /Home/Library/ folder. Be sure you look in the right one.

  • MacbookPro not starting up, not even the front power light

    Hi,
When I switch on my MBP, it is not starting up.
After I press power button, I hear hard disk revving up, it spins for 1-2 secs and then stops with the sound which is made when I switch off my MBP while resetting normally (by keeping the power button pressed for long enough)
besides the hard disk spinning up for those 2 seconds, there is no other indication of life in MBP, not even the front light is blinking.
By the way, I have checked battery and power connection, battery is charging normally, and I have tried starting MBP with power cable plugged in with and without the fully charged battery.
Can this be a RAM issue? Or do you think HDD has crashed?
Please help in resolving this issue
    thanks

probably its defective, try taking it to the store, or if you dont have one near try calling apple to see where you can bring it.

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

  • Help please, the leds my t61 turn on though not even the BIOS appears on the screen

The title says all. After installing (dont know if it really have something to do) a modem usb and shutting down the laptop, the case, to transport it, i open it and the leds where turn on but no image appears. Then, i decide to force the reiniciate of the laptop, turn it off, and then push the power buttom, but, again, only the leds turn on but no image appears, not even the BIOS.
Can someone help me please? Googling i've find two possible answers:
    i) whether the motherboard is dead. (Though, that will be totally unexpected, it was totally fine, and the laptop only have 1 year and a half. And yes, i have updated the BIOS, but that happent 2 weeks ago, and everything went fine)
ii) i have to reset the bios (dunno exactly how to do it. But i keep the live cd of the BIOS which i use to update it. That means that i should use it?
Further information: The fans are working, i can hear them.  No beep code.
    Thanks in advance.
    HELP!

Just found the solution.  It was justa matter of performing an electro static discharge, pushing the buttom 10 times in a 30 sec gap. Now sounds silly but im sure will work for someone. Just remenber to unplug any power alimentation to the laptop first, pushing the button in the right intervals (i had to try for half an hour to perform the right pattern) and when you first time boot it after doing these plug in the AC adapter, without the battery (it took me another half an hour for these)
    cheers.

  • I have two faults! 1, an error comes up in Ps CC 2014 "could not apply the saved panel configuration, restring to default and my tools have disappeared completely and anything ive tried I cannot get them back not even the drop down menu in 'window' helps

I have two faults! 1, an error comes up in Ps CC 2014 "could not apply the saved panel configuration, restring to default and my tools have disappeared completely and anything ive tried I cannot get them back not even the drop down menu in 'window' helps at all. And 2, Lr everytime I load it up it gives me the option to retry or switch to and it takes a while for me to even get anywhere with it I think it has something to do with the catalogs? I've been using these programs for a few years now on a Mac...no problem but when I use a PC when I'm away coz it's the (only) comp available these happen PC's are so useless! Please can anyone help??...

I can give a few suggestions on Photoshop CC 2014, but Lightroom is a separate forum and you should ask Lr questions there.
    First close Photoshop.
Then start Photoshop by double-clicking on it's icon and very quickly after that, hold down the ctrl-alt-shift keys until you see the reset dialog. answer "Yes" to delete settings, and let Photoshop continue to load.
It's tricky to do and may take a few tries, but at least it should reset Photoshop CC 2014 to defaults.

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

Before you go through that trouble open About this Mac > More Info... > System Report > Audio and see if the system actually knows it has a microphone.  Then you can look into Applications > Utilities >  Audio MIDI Setup and see if the microphone is there, select it and make sure the sliders are set to full. Then in System Preferences look for Sound > Input and make sure it shows up there and the sliders are at least half way up. If none of that works do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
then go through the process of looking for the microphone again as the reset may reenable the mic.

  • The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.

I am trying to set up timeMachine on my new mac book pro over a regular home network on a shared network drive. I have tried everything but I keep getting "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features." I am on lion with the lateset unpdate (10.7.4). I have even tried creating sparebundles on from tutorial that I have found online, but non of the hacks that I have tried seemed to work. Have anyone figured out a way around this? If so, can you share, it will be greatful. I could just buy the time capsule that apple sells but I already have a 2TB internal HDD in an old pc that's hosting my file server so no need for the time capsule hardware. Let me know if there is a way around this thank.

    2) NAS with the latest firmware
Not just any NAS.  It has to support the communications protocols used by Time Machine (some involving security, some about error detection and handling).  Some NASs never supported TM; some that worked on Leopard never got updated for Snow Leopard; and some that worked on Snow Leopard still haven't been updated for Lion.
    4) Another networked mac (not a pc)
A Mac running Leopard 10.5.6 or later.
    Are these the only options?
Those are the only options supported by Apple.  Some other destinations may work, to some degree, in some circumstances.  Some require "hacks" or other workarounds.  Most are somewhat unreliable, and, may stop working at all on the next OSX upgrade.
Side note. I've been seeing some online post of how some people are setting up TM on a networked PC drive by setting up a sparsebundle like this site:
Any thoughts? I have tried some of these examples and it don't seem to work...
Some of those may have worked at one time, in some circumstances (2 are dated before Lion was released, the other is undated).
Wireless backups are tricky enough to a supported destination, with all the security and error detection and handling Apple has been able to employ.   If your backups are important to you, don't trust them to a marginal scheme.
And, in any event, don't trust your backups to a single piece of hardware or software.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for an explanation and some suggestions.

I wish you folks would get your software working on OSX and Linux so we didn't have to continue using Microsoft malware.  I hate having to start up my VM to use Windows.  I've pretty much shed myself of all need for Microsoft except for Oracle ME.  The main reason I have moved from C# to Python and now to Java was to eliminate any ties to MS…..only to find that ME requires Windows.  Oh, the irony!
