Stuck Indexing!
So I have been having a problem with Time Machine and it appears to be stuck indexing whenever I try to backup. It will index for quite a long time and no backup will take place. I have verified and repaired my external drive I am backing up to and everything is fine. The drive is a WD My Passport Studio 640GB and was working fine until about a week ago. The drive itself works completely fine, Time Machine is just acting up. What can I do? I have already repaired the drive, as well as my hard drive (there was a problem with my HDD that was carrying over to the external).
So I let it index while I was in class and it has been doing that for almost 7 hours....
Here is the log from the TM widget:

I have just completed a complete reload of Snow Leopard. When I was starting to have trouble before my system went down, I noticed Spotlight was continuously indexing. Now I have reloaded, and it's still doing it (after two days with the computer running and nothing else open for the most part). I looked for the .plist file, and there isn't one. There are .plist files for my other apps, but not for Spotlight. Any suggestions for getting Spotlight up and running?

Time Machine backup problem. Stuck indexing 101. Any suggestions?
Hi
I am having trouble with my Time Machine backup and would be grateful for your help.
I have downloaded the widget and copied the script below.
Time Machine has been operating without issue since bought, around a year ago.
The last backup was 18th May. Nothing comes to mind that may have triggered a change on that date.
I placed the "My Book" backup volume in the private folder for Spotlight.
The indexing process has been running without interruption for over 24 hours.
The backup drive is connected via USB
I have changed the USB port to ensure the connection is sound, which it appears to be

Outlook 2007 indexing stuck at around 20,000 remaining
Hello,
On Monday, a user called me and reported that it seemed that Instant Search in Outlook 2007 (Windows Vista) was stuck on ~20,000 remaining. I have dealt with this kind of problem in the past and it seemed the easiest thing to do was to rebuild the entire
index. This is painful because the user has over 50,000 emails, but when I've worked on similar issues earlier, it seemed the best thing to do. So, we'd leave Outlook open and running as much as possible and let the index rebuild.
I started that rebuild for the first user on Monday night.
Today, a second user from an entirely different site called me to report a very similar issue. Her Outlook is stuck at around 20,000 items remaining. She's also on Vista.
So, now the red flags are flying. Two users from two different sites on two different Exchange servers seeing the same stuck indexing level in Outlook?
Before I rebuild this second user's index -- and I suspect that she has much more than 50,000 emails -- is there anything else I can do? Have there been any recent patches that might alter search behavior?
Any help is appreciated! Of course!Hi,
There are a couple of levels at which Instant Search can break. You can troubleshoot Instant Search in following methods:
Marked for indexing
File-> Options-> section Search-> button Indexing Options…-> button Modify-> expand Microsoft Outlook
In the list that is shown under Microsoft Outlook, make sure that your pst-file is displayed and selected. If it is not listed, you’ll have to recreate your mail profile.
Check for pst-file corruptions
If your pst-file has been marked but Outlook doesn’t display the correct results, it usually means there is some corruption going on in your pst-file. In order to fix these you should scan your pst-file for errors with scanpst.exe. You can find this file
in the same folder as outlook.exe or use OutlookTools (free!) to locate it for you.
For Outlook 2010 you must click in the Search field in order to make the Search Tools tab visible in the Ribbon. Here click the Search Tools button and select the
Indexing Status…
Disable and then re-enable the file for indexing
Go back to the Search Options and deselect the data file that is giving you issues. Close Outlook and wait for about 5 minutes and also verify in Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC) that on the Processes tab the outlook.exe process actually quits. You might get a
lot of disk activity; this is the Search Indexer removing the indexed items from the Index.
After this open Outlook again and go back to the Search Option and select the pst-file we just deselected. Leave the computer idle again and see if it will eventually
reach the status of "0 items remaining."
Rebuild the index
If it doesn’t, it might be that the Index itself has been damaged. In order to reset this, go to Control Panel-> Indexing Options-> Advanced-> button Rebuild
This will rebuild the entire Index from scratch and depending on the amount of documents to be indexed, this could take quite long and degrade your system’s
performance while the Indexer is still busy. I would recommend to have it rebuild itself overnight.
Hope that helps. -
Mail search not working + Spotlight keeps indexing
I have an old problem that has resurfaced after creating a new user on my Mac. Mail search brings no results and Spotlight is constantly indexing - day in, day out. It never seems to get there. I tried turning my hard drive to private in Spotlight settings and then taking it out. Previously Spotlight seemed to get bogged down with external drives now it's stuck indexing my Mac.
Any advice? Is there a way I get unstick this?I can't believe that Apple have STILL not sorted this out. I haven't created a new user (so it's nothing to do with that), but Mail.app won't find anything when searching "Entire Message" in the current Mailbox or in "All Mailboxes". This has been ongoing since Leopard was first released, and we are now up to 10.5.8 without this being fixed.

Spotlight hanging while indexing
If anyone has a solution to perhaps delete a corrupt spotlight database i'd be grateful. I am getting frequent finder (spinning wheel) hangs and spotlight gets stuck indexing. I'm at wits end. Reinstalled the latest system multiple times - tried to search for offending software - still getting hangs.

MacBook Pro 2011 15" won't boot - ML
Hi,
Over the past few weeks I've bene experiencing problems with my 2011 15" MBP.
Initially, I though they were s/w related, but am no longer certain ... and was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?? Here's what's been happening:
* about a month ago my machine started to run really slowly. It didn't freeze, but would run incredibly slowly. After reading the forums, I found some info RE apple mail and vacuuming the mail file and a few other housecleaning suggestions which claimed to help. I did these and it seemed that things went back to normal, particularly after deleting the index file in mail.
* Alas, the problem crept back after about a week. This time my machine came close to unresponsive, so I decided to reboot. Upon doing this, I couldn't get into the OS ... the grey apple logo appeared on start-up, then a white indicator bar, then it would just shut down. I tried booting into the recovery mode and using disk utility to check permissions. There were heaps of errors. I realised that fixing permissions can sometimes do harm, but had a complete TM backup so I wasn't too stressed. The repaair perimissions failed. I then did a verify disk and this too failed. Hmm.
* Now I thought that the HDD may be bad, or that the OS had become corrupted, so I decided to do a clean install of ML. This worked ... and all was well ... I made sure to check permissions and the disk in disk utility a few times and it said all was perfect.
* I managed to load my apps and data/files from TM backup. But, the day that I did a restore of my iphoto library (220Gb), the machine started running slow again. I noticed that a few times it seemd to be stuck indexing the HDD. Odd. It never got passed 'calculating the time'. I rebooted a couple of times, then was back to the unable to start scenario.
* Once again, I went into recovery mode, disk utilities and found heaps of disk permission errors. This time the option to fix was avail, so I 'fixed them'. After rebooting back into recovery mode and trying this again, more permission errors were found, but the option to fix them was now greyed out. I also tried to verify the disk and this failed - indicating HDD issues.
* My second last step was to go into terminal and try /sbin/fsck -yf to check the HDD. The HDD passed all tests and reported back that it was fine. Hmm?
* Finally I tried booting into my Windows 7 partition and that worked fine. I was also able to see the data in the OS X partition - but have't tried doing anything with it (yet).
Before I run off ad replace the HDD, or freak out that maybe something more sinister is damaged ... I hope someone out there could offer further troubleshooting suggestions or help? Does thid sound s/w or h/w related?
BTW, My HDD is a Toshiba MK 7559GSXF 750 Gb.
PS - My machine exhibited the exact same symptoms last year when I was running Snow Leopard. The Apple store recommended I do a clean install - which I did - and at the same time switched to ML. Since then, all was running fine for about a year!
PS - I don't have Disk Warrior ... but have had a quick look at it ... not so simple to use and wasn't sure what verison to run on Moutain Lion.
Thanks in advance ...Hi ds store,
Thanks heaps for your help. In your suggestion, you mentioned two things:
1) Reformat the drive with a secure erase. When I did my previous (non secure) format of the drive, I made sure to check with DU that the drive was OK. After the format, it reported 'no errors' at all. I'm just wondering how the secure format will provide any additional benefit? Assuming that once that's done it will again report no errors. I guess what I am asking is, does the secure format do a more thorough scan or check as part of the process?
2) Find and replace 'corrupted' files. Yikes ... how does one do this? I've got about 700Gb of data (pics, files, work, research, etc). How could I identify possible issues?
As an aside, I have not yet performed the format b/c I reaslised that I have a few photos in my iPhoto library that didn't backup before this issue. There are about 100 recent pics that didn't make it to the TM iPhoto backup. As mentioend before, I can boot in my Win7 partition and 'see' the Mac HD, and know I can copythe files in the Master directory across (if I knew which ones they were) ... but ...
Think it would be easier to connect my iMac (running SL) to my MBP and open the iPhoto library directly on my iMac. This way I could identify the relevant pics quickly and copy them to my iMac temporarily.
However, for some reason, even though I've turned on sharing for the MacHD/...users/XX/Photos directory (while in Win7), my iMac doesn't recognise or allow me to open the iPhoto directory - is this a permission thing ... or is it b/c I am trying to look at a Mac partition 'through' the Win7 o/s?
Any advice would be great ..
Thanks in advance. -
Find does not find any files in Bridge 2.1.1.9
I ran Edit > Find in Bridge 2.1.1.9 while a folder with files was selected.
I searched for 1, I also tried *1*.
It is finding no files, even though under Content a file with a 1 in it is sitting in there. It says Indexing, then No Items to Display.
I even tried typing in the entire file name and it cannot find it.
I did this as a test after searching by keyword reveled no files, yet one was in the folder. Filter DOES work. I tried adding the folder to the indexing option in windows.
I am running Windows Vista.
Another problem I have is in Preview sometimes the last window I was in is showing in the background, behind a picture.
Thanks! Thanks for responding.<br /><br />I tried using very simple terms as you suggested with 0 results. It seems to go and index the folders, then comes back with no results. I tried re-indexing in windows and including the photo folders in the index, I also tried purging the adobe bridge index and increasing the size of it.<br /><br />Does bridge always use the index file to 'Find', and when 'Include Non-Indexed Files' is selected, it simply indexes the other folders then searches that index and returns the results? I ask this because for files in the D: drive, it keeps reindexing the same folders it already indexed the last time I tried to 'Find' in non-indexed files.<br /><br />Bridge sometimes gets stuck indexing a folder and keeps the file handle open even after I close bridge. I have to use 'OpenedFilesView' to release the file.<br /><br />The cache is located in the default folder on the C: in the appropriate users folder. I have 20GB of free space on that drive, and over 100gb free space on D:.<br /><br />A little more info:<br />The photo files are on an internal HDD D:\folder, formated as NTFS. Troubles with 10.6.8, spotlight, disk permissions
I upgraded my trusty 2007 macbook from 10.4.11 to 10.6.8 about a month ago. Upgrade went smoothly and I haven't had any problems in the month since then.
Sometime in the past day or two (noticed it yesterday), Spotlight has begun an eternal indexing project. I doesn't progress beyond "estimated indexing time." It seems to be causing some lag time in my computer's processing.
When I open Finder, the in-window Spotlight feature works just fine.
After reading some forums, I trashed the third-party importers located in HD/Library/Spotlight.
No change.
I safe booted and didn't see the same Spotlight issue in safe mode.
Restarted as usual, and the same stuck indexing problem is still happening.
I decided to verify disk permissions and a whole list of permissions differ. Ran Repair disk permissions. Ran verify again, and again have a list of permissions differing. Ran repair again, then verify again. Same problem. Repair disk permissions doesn't seem to be addressing the issues that Verify is pulling up, even though it says it is.
There is one line in the log that is different from everything else. It says:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The bulk of these permission issues look to be Systems/Library/Java and Systems/Library/CoreServices.
Are these problems related? Anyone have some reliable pointers for me?Your disk permission repair issue is not related to Spotlight issues.

All I can recommend is run ALL of the free OnyX's checks, cleaning and maintainenance features (minus clearing the log files) and reboot. See after some time that it resolves your Spotlight issue (it takes a little while to rebuild it)

Another solution is to resintall OS X fresh install method.

Aurget does not find any package
I've tried to download several packages from aur with aurget and it failed every time for the last week or so.
For example:
[masm@mycray abs]$ aurget -Sd aurget
searching AUR...
error: aurget: package not found in AUR.
With yaourt, it works:
[masm@mycray abs]$ yaourt -S aurget

What can I do to fix aurget? I have the latest version from aur (3.4.2-1)Thanks for responding.<br /><br />I tried using very simple terms as you suggested with 0 results. I was re-indexing my whole drive and it was going pretty smoothly until it was stuck for about 24 hours. When i took a look in console, this is what appeared:
mdworker32(7488) deny iokit-open IOHIDParamUserClient (Importing type 'com.makemusic.mus' using 'file://localhost/Library/Spotlight/Finale.mdimporter/' - diagnostic:0 - find suspect file using: sudo mdutil -t 12366294)
When I looked back, that "com.makemusic.mus" error message had pretty much been going on all day. I've tried to look for that file in the library preferences folders but I couldn't find them. I am using finale 2012. Can anyone tell me where I can find that file?
ThanksThanks for the update.
The user is oracle and group is dba. I know from the name of the file that it is coming from oracle apps (somewhere in a custom program).

My time capsule is stuck on "indexing."
My time capsule wireless updates won't get past "indexing." It's never done this before and I've had it for a long time. It won't finish the backup or indexing. It will prepare the items then sit on indexing for hours. I've even left it over night and it was still stuck. I tried reseting the time capsule and it didn't work. I also installed the newest software update and it didn't help. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
I finallyl gave up and paid Apple Support to help. They found a conflict in my running Symantec Anti-virus. Once I shut it down, my backups began working. Its a shame I have to turn off software that protects my Mac, so that I can back up my Mac for protection.

There was only one thing i could not do, i could not repair my backups, because they didn't appear in the disk utility..
What are you backing-up to? If you can see the +sparse bundle+ your backups are in via the Finder, use the instructions in #A5 for repairing the backups on a Time Capsule. If you can't see it, you can't repair them with DIsk Utility (or most 3rd-party disk repair apps). Check with the maker of the NAS for help.
Further, i thought it would be something with the message "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD"
That's normal after a failed/cancelled backup, and will be repeated each time until one completes successfully. See #A6 in Troubleshooting for details.
Besides, my spotlight is now indexing my harddisk and seems to get stuck on "calculating time for indexing"
This is because i excluded my harddisk from spotlight, restarted my mac and then included my harddisk again for spotlight. So it needed to reindex it, but i'm not sure that it will work, because it allready toke the whole day for it and is still saying the same thing..
That sounds like a problem with a file or the directory structure on your internal HD. Did you verify your internal HD, per #3 in the green box? If so, and if it says it's ok, exclude your internal HD from Spotlight indexing until you get your backups working; then you can figure out what's wrong with Spotlight. -
Stuck on indexing backup snow leopard
Hello,
I have been having a recurring issue with my time machine. It keeps getting stuck on "calculating changes" or indexing backup. I did a disk repair from the install disk and a repaired permissions on both my boot drive and my time machine drive. When I did that it finally moved from calculating changes to indexing backup. But it will not move past that. I've left it for hours with no change and no progress. It'll scan all files that have changed and then get stuck on indexing. I know I haven't made many changes since the last backup either. Before I've just been able to keep repairing disks and permissions and it will finally work, but I'm starting to get tired of it.
I'm out of ideas... Anyone?
It's an iMac with 4gHz and 150+ GB free.See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

IFilter - Index service gets stuck on PDF files
Hello, I'm running iFilter v6.0 on Windows Server 2003. The server takes a couple seconds to index a text file, but as soon as it runs into a PDF it gets stuck. It will never finish indexing the PDF. If I try to delete the PDF, I get an error saying the file is in use. I'm able to delete the file once I stop the index service. I really need to index PDF files for our website.
I already tried stopping the index service, uninstalling iFilter, rebooting, reinstall iFilter, reboot, empty the index catalog, start the index service, and finally reindex.hello Ira:
I'm afraid this question will not get answered here-best to go to Apple discussions-printing and Faxing at this link:
