Stuck on grey screen and can't back up my HD

Im on Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion. I've been stuck at the grey loading screen, making every attempt to backup my HD. I have an external HD im trying to copy everything over to but everytime I try to create New Image, it gives me the permission error -61. Sometimes when I repair the Disk it tells me "Macintosh HD appears to be OK." Then the next time I run it, it tells me "Error: Disk Utlitly can't repair this disk. Back up as many files...." I have also repaired permissions and it repairs a few, but still does not allow me to copy my files over. I had no Time Machine backups. Is there anything else I should be doing, or have I lost all my files?

Hello, I have an iPhone 4s, I noticed that when I am on a call (Phone) and I am done and I go to hang up, the iPhone is stuck on the screen and can not get new calls or call to a new call

Is there a case on the iphone?
If so, then remove it and see if that solves it.
Otherwise, make an appointment at the genius bar.

  • Macbook air Lion stuck at grey screen and spinning wheel

    HI
I have a Macbook air with Lion installed.  I pressed the On button, but it gets stuck at grey screen, apple logo and spining wheel.  I then managed to get it to startup in Safe Mode.
How can I find out  what the problem was?
Please could you let me know if there are some simple steps to fix this?
    Thank you in advance.

Please carefully read Gray screen appears during startup, Apple will tell you how to trouble shoot the issue. I suspect your HD has crashed, not a big deal if you have been backing up. However if you haven't then you're probably about to learn a lesson on why backup is critical.

  • Macbook pro stuck on grey screen and making buzzing noise

    hi,
Lately my mac has been playing up (1 year old), ever now and then it would make a funny buzzing noise, coming from the left side..  and i noticed it was running slower than usual. Im Running Mountain Lion and have 566GB of disk space left... after using it for about 5 minutes the buzzing noise would start and it would become unresposive with the spiral beach ball.  So i would have to hard restart it.  Now ever time i turn it on it gets to a grey screen and doesnt load further. eventually the sound starts again!! i have tried starting it in safe mode and verifying my disk in utilities where everything "seems to be ok" !!    someone please help!!!

    Ethan997,
    define “an average disk”.
Your question regarding fault is akin to asking “is it my fault or the car maker’s fault that my spark plugs no longer work?” — disks, like spark plugs, don’t last forever, and fault doesn’t come into it. Similarly, the fact that your disk (or spark plugs) worked yesterday and doesn’t work today is not a sudden “breakage” — by their nature, they have a finite, variable amount of time in which they do work. This is why (in the case of disks) making regular backups is important; when the disk stops working, you’ll have an easy way to recover from such a situation.
That being said, if your MacBook Pro is still under warranty, you should be able to get a replacement disk from Apple. And even if it isn’t, you could  still try reformatting your current disk, to see if you can squeeze some more use out of it — but if the reformatted volume keeps needing to be repaired (and you have the patience to deal with recovering from the same situation again and again), that’s a sure sign that a new disk would be your best option.

  • ITunes update caused my iPhone to FAIL. I was only wishing to connect to my pc iTunes, then I was told I could upgrade to the latest iTunes for the mobile. Bad idea! I'm abroad, and now I'm stuck in grey screen-- how can I get my iPhone back?

Please help me, I am verging on desperation! I am flying tomorrow, so I was only trying to add some music to my iPhone.
During the process, connected to the latest version of iTunes for Windows, I was asked a seemingly innocent question-- would you like to
update your iTunes for iPhone?  If only I could go back and ignore this question,
But no, I am now stuck in purgatory-- no use of iPhone, at al! -- the upgrade FAILED. Perhaps because I'm in Asia? At any rate,
I was told that I needed to reformat my phone to factory settings (losing all data!) That was the info on the pc. My phone would ONLY display
a phone cord pointing to iTunes (beckoning to connect), but I was connected to the pc already. So I had to click to reformat.
There was no other option, I browsed tha forums, was semi-assured that iCloud would help back me up. I heard about iTools,
but that also proved a dead end.  My phone ended up in this grey screen, where choices are limited. They originally asked if I wanted to connect
with iTunes, but I chose WIFI. I tried many times to "activate" the phone this way, and it always fails. ( I wanted to try activating through
iTunes, but I can't go back to that original option. At times "Connect with iTunes" is only very briefly shown, but disappers before I can select
    it.)
Every time I'm left with the message "Your iPhone (failed) bec. the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Try connecting phone to iTunes"
    But HOW?

    Why did you disconnect it?
You will have to restore it.
Your data is gone if you failed to make sure it was on your computer before updating, as you always should you.

  • Stuck at grey screen and spinning wheel

I have a IMac that suddenly can't move past the grey screen, apple logos, and spinning wheel.  I have used the OS system disk to repair the Macintosh HD, the app stated that the repair of the volume was successful, but in trying to use the HD to restart, I am still stuck with the spinning wheel.  What should I do next, or what am I doing wrong?

  • Stuck on grey screen and wild fans

I just restarted my powermac G5 this morning after installing the ilife and keyboard updates and it gets stuck on the grey screen with grey apple and then the fans start winding up and the machine sounds like it's going to take off down the run way.
I have tried to start it a couple of times and the same thing happens, even disconnected the external drives and things with no luck.
can anyone have a solution? what s going on with it?

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
If that doesn't do it, Try things in Apple doc.#106464 for your startup issue. The article says it is for 10.3.9 and down but it still applies to 10.4 systems.
Also, try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
Let us know what errors DU reports and if it was able to repair them.

  • IPod 5th Gen Stuck On Charging Screen And Wont Turn Back On

So my ipod was fully charged and then just randomly shut off... I plug it back in and it goes to that charging screen it goes to when it actually dies on you.. its been stuck like that for over 3 hours and wont turn back on... I cant hold  my home button and power button down cause a few months  ago my home button spring broke... so thats not an option... and my ipod wont register to my computer for me to restore it.. can somebody please help me?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPod in recovery mode use one of these programs to place the iPod in recovery mode
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT1349 My Apple MacBook Pro won't start up.  It is stuck on grey screen and I reset all of the stuff.  It still won't work also half the screen goes dark then you have to shake it till it goes back on.  Please help.

MacBook Pro     Older version with grey keyboard

You might have better luck posting on the Mabook Pro discussion forum, as this is the OS X Xserve server forum.
Have you tried booting it from a DVD? If so and you find the same result, then its probably a hardware issue.

  • Grey screen and can't eject dvd

Put OSX Leopard DVD in brand spankin' new intel iMac. Screened turned grey and disc is stuck. I've turned off and back on the computer, tried to eject holding mouse, tried f12.

Did this brand new iMac previously start up and run normally, before you inserted the Leopard installation disc?
The current new iMac only supports the pre-installed version of Mac OS X, or later, which is Snow Leopard. Leopard is earlier. You should not try to install Leopard on it.
To eject the disc, try powering up with the mouse button held down. You can also try starting up with the Option key held down, to get Startup Manager. Pressing the Eject key on that screen should eject the disc; then, select the internal drive as the startup disk and continue.
If the above does not work, the startup disk setting is stored in PRAM, so try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, try resetting SMC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac from power and reconnecting, using a precise procedure.

  • Stuck on grey screen and worse...

    Hey Guys and Gals
Was updating to latest version of Mavericks, restart my Macbook Pro, and it got stuck on the apple startup screen with the spinning 'working' icon underneath. Tried restarting in safe mode, no luck, and have tried reinstalling Mac OS via recovery but it says that my Macintosh HD disk is "locked". Upon trying to repair it in Disk Utility, it cannot complete repair and says to backup and do a clean install. At this point, my question it how can I backup my drive if it seemingly can't be fixed. Am I screwed? Thanks for any help and let me know any more info you need.
    RD

You are screwed unless you already have a backup. Here's how to proceed:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Vollumn icon stuck on the screen and can't get rid of it

The vollumn icon keeps showing on the screen. I updated the software and turned off the blue tooth. But it still can't be got rid off. When I turned the vollumn down, it would automatically raise to the top vollumn and stuck there. It really bothers me using it now.

Try a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys, past when you see the power down slider, and until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and see if that fixes it.
It won't hurt your data, just a little clearing of the cobwebs for your device

  • Powermac G5 stuck on grey screen start up and fans running wild

    Hi All
I also have the recurring problem all of a sudden - yesterday all seems well, today am stuck on grey screen and fans getting stronger by the minute. NOTHING works - have been through all sorts of forums and the most I got was to try disk utility - which says all is well - replaced the battery - tried just about anything short of pouring some acid on the **** thing, won't boot from original install CD either - I really need this machine as I earn my living with it and cant afford a new one and why as it was working just perfect - now this mess. In a way don't know why the excellerating fans are not built to simply pick up speed and then eat into the PC board and CPU - at lest this way we know for sure there is nothing we can do.
Does no one here know why the mac is doing this - not even the mac fundies? Unbelievable. I live in Namibia and Apple Mac support here is similar to that on this website - might as well write this on a wall - that is why I am really frustrated... **** Mac

    Follow these steps in order:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
The G5 is also subject to solder failure around the RAM slots and memory controller.
It is a fatal condition, but one that can sometimes be temporarily sidestepped by heating the logic board between the RAM slots with a hair dryer.
Heat the board until very warm (hot) then start.
If your machine starts after heating, then you better just leave the machine on all the time.
You never know when the trick won't work......
