Stuck on "loading photos" when i try to open iphoto

Hi - This is a brand new problem. When I click on the iphoto icon to open it, the iphoto window appears, everything is blank, except for"loading photos" and a spinning circle. i left it up, thinking maybe it was just being slow...came back hours later to the same thing. the pictures are still accessible in Finder, but I can't do anything in Iphoto. no library, no albums, nothing. thanks for any info anyone might have! --joanna

apparently messing with your photos via the finder can cause cataloging problems. But being that you only have a few hundred pictures now, it's not as difficult to create a new library as was directed by the link that Philly Phan provided. HOWEVER when you have several THOUSAND pics like I do, and with albums and keywords assigned to them, you LOSE all if that when creating a new library.
this all ***** and I have yet to find a way to avoid that and even if you archive the original library, iphoto can't recoup that once this software grinds to a halt like this.
I never messed with the library this time so I don't know what caused my problem to begin with but to plow through all my photos again, its killing me. I am po'd to say the least.

We have no way of knowing. Maybe you did or maybe you didn't. If you don't tell us what version you have, how could we know?

Did you upgrade to a new MacOS X version? Then you need to update iPhoto as well.
Only iPhoto 9.6 is compatible with MacOS X 10.10 Yosemite.  Update from the Mac App Store.
Backup your iPhoto library, if you do not have a current backup.
Launch the App Store, click the "Store" menu, and sign in with your current AppleID.
Check the "Updates" tab of the App Store for an iPhoto update and run the update.
When you laugh iPhoto after the update, it will warn you, that the library needs upgrading, That may take a while.
Just in case that you see a warning, that the update is not possible because of an error message: "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
Uninstall iPhoto by deleting it from the Applications folder, but do not empty the Trash, so you can put iPhoto back, if need be.
Launch the App Store, click the "Store" menu, and sign in with your current AppleID.
Open the main page "Featured" of the App Store and search for iPhoto.
If iPhoto is listed as "Free", click the "Free" button to buy it with your current AppleID.
If it is not showing as free, there is no help but contacting the App Store Support to sort out the AppleID. Use this link: http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/

    Hi Thomas,
I actually just found my photo library in the trash?????  I have no idea how they got there, but I have moved them back to the Picture folder and all is well again.
Thanks for replying to my post.

  • When i try to open iphoto it opens but its just a gray window that has the loading icon

when i try to open iphoto it opens but its just a gray window that has the loading icon

What version of iphoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

First, copy your iPhoto Library to an external so that you have a backup.
Second, see if you can create a new Library and have it open. To do this, open iPhoto while holding down the Option key. It will ask which Library to use, or allow you to create a new Library. Save the new library with a different name from the old one.
If that does open with a new library, the old library is corrupt, but all the files are still OK.
If it is a corrupt Library, iPhoto Library Manager can repair some corruption, or transfer the Library over to a new one.

How are you launching iPhoto? From your Dock? The Dock icon may still be linked to an older iPhoto version. Just to be sure, you are opening really iPhoto 9.6, launch iPhoto by double-clicking the iPhoto icon in your applications folder. Your crash log  with the the "Library not found" error message should show the version number of iPhoto. Which version is it showing?

I am working on a mini: when I try to open Iphoto it deviates me directly to the App Store... can't open Iphoto...  any suggestions ?

What is your current iPhoto version? If you just upgraded to Mavericks, you may need to update iPhoto as well. With Mavericks you should be using iPhoto 9.5.1 for full compatibility.  If your current version is iPhoto 9.x.y or later, you can update for free from the App Store; but if your iPhoto is older, you need to purchase the upgrade.

  • I just upgraded to os 10.9.5. When I try to open iPhoto, I am told that the version I have(9.3), is not compatible with the os. But it came with it when I upgraded. What do I have to do to get an iPhoto that works with 10.9.5? TIA

I just upgraded to os 10.9.5 on my 15 " macbook pro from os 10.7.5. When I try to open iPhoto, I get the message that it is not compatible with the os. How can that be??? It came with the upgrade. It says the version of iPhoto is 9.3. How do I get an iPhoto that works with os 10.9.5? TIA

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgradeto iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

I bought a mini mac that was returned to a store; when I try to open iPhoto it tells me I do not own a full copy of the software and prompts me to sign into an applied that is not mine. How do I fix this??

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's a problem that all users of a second-hand Mac released after the OS X Lion launch have. OS X, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are registered to the Apple ID the first owner used to register the computer, so you can't use them legally without repurchasing them. Furthermore, there's a bigger problem: you have to get iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand on a DVD, because the App Store makes impossible to purchase these applications on a second-hand Mac.
Nothing will happen if they are already installed, but you won't be able to reinstall and update them, so I recommend you to delete them and buy iLife '11 on a DVD to install the applications from there. Also, take note that you can't also reinstall OS X, so if OS X gets damaged, you will have to take your computer to an Apple Store.
Open  > About this Mac, and tell us the OS X version you have. If you are using OS X Lion, you can upgrade to Mountain Lion with your Apple ID, so then you will be able to reinstall OS X

Why did you mark your post as solved?
You will be better off posting in either the Lion or the iPhoto forum areas as this area is for Macbook Pro issues.  You are having software issues.
