Stuck on OS X Utilities

It all started when I updated my Macbook to OS X Mavericks. I've updated the operating system before without any issues whatsoever. This time seems to be a different story. Once I updated it was ok for a day, maybe. Then my wife was looking at shoes on Reebok's website (name the site to show I wasn't doing sketchy things and wasn't on unreliable websites) and then it froze on me. I got the rainbow pinwheel of death. Couldn't click on anything and was going nowhere really fast! I let it sit for a few minutes thinking it might repair itself. That did not happen. Ultimately I decided to turn the computer off and let it completely shut down and turn it back on. I don't ever do this, it's a last resort for me.
When I turned it back on I met the OS X Utilities screen where nothing happens and I can't fix anything. It appears it wants me to reinstall Mavericks. I tried and went through the process but the disk it wants me to use to install Mav on is the Recovery HD disk. However I can't click on it, the disk is locked. I don't know why or how to fix that.
Then I go to the disk utilities. I click on 500.11 TOSHIBA disk. Click Verify Disk and things seem to be ok. It says the verify was good. It gives me the option to repair the disk and when I try that an error comes up. "Error: Live file system repair not supported". Confusion!?
Then I click on OS X Base System and click Verify Disk. That appears ok as well. I don't have the option to repair this one. In the past I have and it has given me a partition error. Not sure exactly what it said since it hasn't given me that option this time.
My Macbook is only 3 years old in Dec. and it has always been in good condition and never abused or used in sketchy ways. Please help me try to figure this out without spending a fortune on another computer or repair. Thank you Apple Community!

I'm currently having exactly the same problem, and I wonder if you have found a solution to it?
Thanks!

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html  Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • HT201250 my mac froze on a grey screen after i tried to login so i tried a safe boot, but now  i am stuck in the startup utilities program and i cant get out of it

My mac froze and wouldnt startup because it was forced to sleep while a complex program was running, and simply ended up on a blank grey screen, and this happened upon every startup. so then i tried to use a safe boot but this ended me up on the startup utilities thing. i have realised that none of the options: restore from time machine backup, reinstall osx mountain lion, and repair disk are available to help me startup, and i cant select a startup disk either as it says none are available. so i am stuck on this program and it reapears every time i restart or shutdown and reboot, so i cant do anything. Please is there any way i could either quit startup utilities or get back to my computer desktop as i have lots of non-backed up image and video files that i cant afford to lose. please help!

    Maybe this will help.

  • My iMac wouldn't load past the Apple Logo or Spinning wheel. Not it is stuck on the OSX Utilities page?!?!

    Hi,
    I have a 2010 iMac.
I have had not one problem with my mac since getting it as a gift, yet since I updated to the newest update. 10.8.2 or something along this, my Mac began to work really slow, and all of a sudden it should down today.
I tried to turn it back on and it was stuck on the white screen with the apple logo, the spinning wheel and occasionally the loading bar underneath.
I have used many forums including this, to try and find a solution. I finally got on to the OSX Utilities page, however, i can't wipe my hard drive clean, can't uninstall my operating system.
It's basically stuck on this page.
I'm a complete novice with Macs really, its used mostly for University work and research.
    thanks :/

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.  Might also apply to new machines the first 90 days. BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best insurance policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.
Fixing the locked disk w/Mountain Lion installed is something they should be able to rectify.

  • Mavericks stuck on OS X Utilities screen

I restarted Mavericks only to find a nasty surprise. Now I'm stuck on the OS X Utilities screen. I have exhausted all available options shown on that screen.
    1) I quit the OSX and chose the startup disk but when restarting, the OS X Utilities screen appeared again.
    2) tried restoring from backup but I got a message saying "An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk"
    4) tried reinstalling back to Lion but it said "Could not find installation info for this machine"
    5) restarting while holding Command R gave me a warning logo (!) combined with the address apple.com/support
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks guys!!!!!!

You can boot from a USB installer, you can create that via http://diskmakerx.com or use the standard Disk Utility instructions (put simply - restore the InstallESD.dmg to the USB stick).
You can then use the regular installer utilities (Disk Utility etc) to inspect your disk or try repairs. It does sound like starting over will help.
    To erase & install…
Open Disk Utility, select the internal HD, select the Partition Tab, create a new single partition & select GUID Partition table in the options, Apply that & all the data on disk will be gone.
You can then Quit Disk Utility & continue to install OS X. The installer should re-create the recovery partition for you.
Don't forget you can choose to migrate your backed up data via the installer or you can use /Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant at any point in the future (e.g. once you are sure it boots OK).

  • Stuck on OS X Utilities page help !

I Went to log in and the OS X utilities page came up. It won't let me restore from time machine back up , or reinstall OS X... So I can't do anything. Any suggestions on how to get back into my laptop?  Thanks!

Your boot volume is hosed or your HD/SSD has failed.
If DiskUtility will reformat the drive to start anew, reinstall the OS upgrade from there.
If you can not access your HD, replace or take it in

    Help stuck in utilities

Did you select a drive from the left window pane first?
If yes,  testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
    CREATE A NEW USER
Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, then the problem is with your base files.
If no, then the problem is in your User's folder.
To continue with support it would be helpful to post the results from EtreCheck here. EtreCheck will display the important details of your system configuration and highlight old files you still might have around that will affect your Mac.

  • Macbook Air (2011) won't connect to internet and is stuck in Mac OSX Utilities

Additionally, I cannot connect to my backups because I deleted them! Install takes to long to do at Starbucks for example. Halp? I have a WPA2 Internet security. I have also rebooted everything.
    Help is greatly appreciated!

Glad it's not just me. I have D-Link and TP-Link routers set up in the same or a similar way. My iPads, iPods and Windows laptops all show a single SSID and switch between them happily. My new 13" Air was showing two networks (2 SSIDs) and wireless was patchy at best. I changed one router to be N only and that improved things somewhat, but still loosing the network. In order to see which router was being used I altered the SSID of one. The "N-only" router is giving the best coverage with a strong signal - but then it just drops out and the wireless icon shows "Searching". Turning wifi off then back on fixes the connection.
When it comes to internet browsing my iPad 2 is significantly faster than the Air.
I'm also having trouble keeping or attaining connections to my Windows shares, drop-out, even when I still have internet connectivity.

  • 10.5.1 ate my utilities!!

I just installed 10.5.1 and most everything in my utilities folder is gone. It left usb overdrive and steer mouse, thats it. All of the utilities are now gone. I don't know where to start.

Check that all your utilities are 10.5.1 compatible before installing 10.5.1. Now that you have, just live with it until you can get your utilities back. In the future, always follow the documentation that comes with the update. Among other things Apple does say to backup before installing the update. The link which appears both in Software Update and on the update on the website says:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306907
"It is recommended that you backup your system prior to installing any updates."
This is an important lesson. And I can't overemphasize it enough. Unfortunately this is the cost for not reading the readme, is that you are stuck with non-functioning utilities.

  • At start launches OS X Utilities and I cannot reinstall OS X or repair disk or else...

I'm stuck on OS X Utilities and I cannot restart the mac. I've tried all options but it looks that nothing works. Help...

Yet another example of why it's a VERY BAD IDEA to do a clean install of Lion unless you are already VERY familiar with how to tweak the Mac OS. There's a reason Apple engineers removed it as an option. To accomplish it you have to erase your disk; not for the faint hearted.
Do you have a backup? PLEASE don't tell us you did this without a robust backup.
You erased the operating machine, so your computer went to the only place it could find one, the Recovery partition. And it's minimal, so it has to download everything in small chunks to reinstall itself. So yeah, it could take 10 hours.
Here's another option. Do you still have the original disks that came with your machine? Put one in and restart from it. You can reinstall your old system much faster. Then go to the Mac App Store and your purchase history and see if you can redownload Lion (I think that still works).
And this time just do yourself a favor and install per Apple's instructions. When the machine starts into Lion, use Setup ***'t (the first thing that fires up) to migrate from your backup.

  • I have had my mac-book pro for almost a year, and have just got OSX Mavericks, and now the sound on my laptop is working in a sporadic way, can I change this at all on system preferences or will I have to get it repaired?

On my mac-book pro the sound isnt working after I have installed OSX Mavericks, should I take it to be repaired, or can I do something on System Preferences?

In addition to checking system preferences/sound/output and selecting built in if that does not work, make sure volume is up and mute not checked.
You can try the following, Take a set of headphones and plug theim in and out several times (there is a micro switch that sometimes gets stuck)
Go to applications>utilities>Audio MIDI set up, see if you can select built in there, make sure volume is uo mute not checked.
    Try a NVRAM/PRAM reset:
Power off, power back on holding the following keys   OPTION + COMMAND + P + R
Continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times, then release, reboot

  • 10.5.1 Helped My Buffer Size

When I upgraded to Leopard on my G5 Dual 1.8 (Firebox interface), I had to raise my buffer from 64 all the way to 256 to stop some really nasty distorting. While I'm not back to 64—will I ever be?—after applying 10.5.1, I'm at least back to clean sound at 128. I haven't seen reports of buffer issues on G5s with Leopard, but I had one; maybe it has to do with the Firebox FAIK.
The improvement is appreciated, though. Thanks, Apple.
Of course, Apple said nothing abut audio improvements in 10.5.1, but, hey, I sees what I sees.
