Stuck pixels. Would you put up with them? Pic inside.

Here's my screen.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5430/stuckpixelscn4.jpg
See the little white dots on the screen? Am I just too picky? Would you put up with it?

This is a week 38. You're right in arms length most of them are not that noticeable but I can still see some. Of course you don't realize they're there when you watch music videos since they're usually fast but when watching dark movies or seeing pictures you can see them.
I would think that for such a small screen costing $400 they should be near perfect and stuck pixels, negative blacks shouldn't be present in any of the production batches.
I'll give it try on replacing it next week and maybe I'll get a week 39 and hopefully it will be a little better.

Open your iPhoto Library package with the Finder as shown in this screenshot
and look in the folder named Auto Import.  Move any files in that folder to a folder on the Desktop and close the package. Do not make any other changes.  Launch iPhoto (the message should be gone) and drag the folder on the Dersktop into the open iPhoto window to import them.

These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here.
If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.

  • Would you help me with my settings?

I was told that the little light on the front of my iBook G4 should "pulsate" when it is really in sleep mode. It was doing that, but now, when I close it, it just goes black (as if it shut off, but it hasn't really. If I gently press the power button, it's right back). Is my iBook really sleeping if the light doesn't pulsate? Would you please advise the correct Energy Saving settings to ensure that it does? Thanks so much!

John, I just reset PMU. I unplugged the computer, turned it off, removed the battery, held down the shift/ctrl/option and power keys for 5 seconds. Then I waited 5 seconds and plugged it back and restarted it. I put the battery back in. The calendar and clock were way off, I had to reset those, as well. This is what's happening (I made sure to really watch it and listen.) I quit all my applications and close the cover. The light pulsates once or twice, then the computer seems to shut down. But..... here's the kicker.... every few seconds, it will try to "light up" (meaning the apple logo on the cover, you can see a screen light try to shine through it with the lid closed) and it makes a noise as if it's trying to start up. Then it does silent again and then tries it again. If I open the cover, it's completely dark and quiet until I press the power button. sigh I guess I should take it back to the Apple Store? I hate that, because they had to clean install and I just finished getting everything back like I like it. Bummer.

  • Would you put XML and HTML files stored in the database as files?

    Hi,
Basically that is my question. My criteria is that I will be given some XML files, I need to save the XML file somewhere for future reference. However I also have to store when it was registered and so on.
Would you install this in the database? Or you would just store the path where it is deployed?

    Hi,

have to store when it was registered and so on. So the XML won't be changing unless the registration date is updated?
A file modification time could give you the same effect.
Would you install this in the database? Or you would
just store the path where it is deployed?I'd favor the latter for the sake of an argument.
If you put it in the database, you wouldn't be able to query for the XML except by ID or registration date. Not much point in having it there.

  • Hard drive duke out...which one would you put your life on the line for?

As far as SATA drives go only...
Seagate 320 gig Barracuda (ST3320820AS) vs. Samsung 320 gig HD320KJ vs. factory WD/Apple 250 gig drive. All about the same age (3/07) except for the Apple 250 which is about 8/06.
Which one would you choose for your main drive?
    Thanks a bunch!

Everybodys milage seems to vary with Hard drives as does the current quality of certain manufactures. Personally I've been burned numerous times on Seagate drives but that could simply be my luck of the draw. What is really more important is how you use specific drives vs their reliability.
I have a RAID 5 Linux server in my rack for my major archiving. That server has been built with Raptor OS drives (Small ones, 36Gb) as all it has is FC5. The RAID array is built from much cheaper (per Gb) 500Gb WD Caviar drives. In my configuration this comes to about 1.25Tb of RAID 5 storage. I can sustain a full drive failure without losing my data. I can also lose my OS drive, buy an new one, Install Fedora 5 again, and my RAID will still be there. (I've backed up the critical files necessary to support this and I've tested it. It works.)
My MacPro is just about to be rebuilt. I got a Hitachi Ultrastar from Newegg.com
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145164
I have 4x500Gb WD drives in my Pro configured to be a RAID 1 from 2 1Tb logical volumes. I plan on using this for quick local archive of projects as yanking a 50Gb project from there is still much faster than off my RAID 5 plus my RAID 5 is quickly getting filled from my photography work so I'm using the RAID 1 for my video work. In addition to that, I have a Firewire 800 1TB external drive to run on TimeMachine and back up all my working files on my new OS drive. If I sound paranoid. I am. Just remember no matter WHO's drive you buy, it is, in the end, not a question of IF it might fail, but WHEN. You should plan your work environment expecting your drives will fail and then make sure you have enough backup that you can recover from that. One could argue there may be holes even in my backup plan. There are, but in the end, I can recover everything, baring my home burning down. (and actually I'm covered for that, all be it the latency in the backup is probably on a 2 week cycle).

  • Can iPod minis play movies- and can you put pictures on them?

Hi everyone, I updated my ipod recently and I was wondering if i can download pictures and movies on my ipod mini. I tried cheking on the official site for info on the mini but there wasn't anything. Also in the movies section they didn't mention if ipod minis are compatible with it or not.
I'm really confused because my friend said i should be able to download my pictures on to it, but i don't even think my mini has colour.
If anyone can answer my questions it would be great! thanks, topaz

The iPod Mini won't display photos or play video of any kind. The replacement for the Mini was the iPod Nano which has a colour display and will show photos which is possibly where the confusion had arisen. The second generation iPod Nano also has the wrap around aluminium body and comes in colours the way the iPod Mini did, in effect a mini Mini: Identifying different iPod models

  • How would you capture AIR audio on iOS (inside ANE)?

Hi! I'm wondering what would be the best way to capture AIR app audio on iOS.
I was able to capture video with OpenGL(that was tricky), also I'm able to do microphone capturing, both from ANE.
Now I'm wondering how does AIR do audio output on the native level (iOS). What API does it use... From that I might be able to understand how to capture the audio. I know that there are different audio "pathways" from my limited iOS understanding, like Remote IO, or AVFoundation - but I'm not sure how/if its possible to capture from AVFoundation if its that. I know there's a way to capture from Remote IO.
In general, I know it is possible, I'm seeing frameworks being able to capture audio on iOS just with a single ANE...so its only about figuring out "how".
To clarify: I'm looking to capture realtime audio output from an AIR app.

I'm trying the log and transfer method with Pro Res 422 HQ at the moment from material from a Panasonic SD5. For some reason FCP cannot mix down the 5:1 sound properly and you get channel 1 being 5 times as loud as channel 2. HOWEVER using Clip Wrap and again transcoding to Pro Res 422 HQ, seems to be able to mix the 5:1 to stereo, perfectly. My problem is Catch 22, I am often told to film in nasty places hence the need for tiny AVCHD cameras. Other programmes can work with these files like Pinnacle and FCE, however they do not have the Pro Res 422 HQ codec for exporting, that I must deleiver on, so I am having to work with FCP.Looks like Clip Wrap seems to work quite well....so far, but I haven't tested it properly yet.

  • Dead or stuck pixels?

    Hi
I got my MBP a week ago and I didn't notice anything worng with it, except for the known things like "whine" and "heat", but I'm OK with that.
Today I noticed a display issue, something like a dead pixel or whatever It might be called. I could have been there before, but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed it as I can see it pretty clearly now when browsing the net.
I ran a pixel checker and saw another one, the same appearance! But a bit further away so I don't notice it when surfing.
I have an external TFT monitor which also has one of these, the same kind. I Googled a bit now but I'm not sure if it's a stuck or a dead pixel. Stuck pixels seem to be fixable with some flashing movies, if you're lucky, but shouldn't be used too much as they might cause new stuck pixels (?).
Anyway, I read DEAD pixels are black. My pixels are not black, but they aren't of the same color all the time. Depending on the angle I view them from, they "blink"/change color from red, green, blue, they aren't the same all the time.
Do I have stuck or dead pixels?
    Thanks!
edit: But it looks like a black little spot when I look at it straight in front with a, say, red, green or blue background behind it. I mean that there isn't any idea to run the pixel fixer if I know that they are dead.

You, know, I think I just fixed it :P
I read a lot on different sites just what you wrote here, but I wanted to make sure I had stuck and not dead pixels!
Anyway, I ran the little movie file which flashed colors and then I just rubbed the spot with my finger... they both disappeared! Took less than 10 seconds! Using both the methods at the same time did the trick for me (in the short time I tried it anyway!)
Would be pretty cool if my "dead" pixel on my external monitor disappeared also... Hehe, I've lived with that one over a year
    Thanks for the fast reply!

  • How would you configure your database?

How would you configure your disks with those specifications?
    General Database Characteristics:
os is Oracle Enterprise Linux 64 bit
    Enterprise Edition
    180GIG size database.
    High "oltp" environment.
Estimated growth of 40 to 60GIG/year
    20GIG of archivelogs/Day
Flashback time is 24 hours:120GIG of flashback space in avg
Local backup. Full database copy, then incremental is the preferred method.
That way, if a datafile goes bezerk, replace with backup datafile then recover.
Or if only a few corrupt block, block recover with rman.
BTW: Backup is done locally first, then send to another server, than on tape.
Archivelogs is duplexed on another server.
    General Hardware Info:
    Server Platform: Dell PowerEdge 1950
    16 GIG RAM
    2 * 64 bit CPU's
    2 * local 300G/15rpm disks
    Storage: Dell PowerVault MD3000
    15 * 300G/15rpm Disks
    Possibility for 17 disks here.
Here is my configuration so far:
OS+ oracle binary + Online Redo Logs Copy 1 + Control File Copy 1: 2 disks raid 1
flashback + backup + Online Redo Logs Copy 2 + Control File Copy 2: 4 disks raid 1 or 10
    archivelogs: 2 disks raid 1
Temporary Datafiles: 1 disk no raid
UNDO Datafiles: 2 disks raid 1
    Datafiles 6 disk raid10
total 17 disks: + spare disks on the side of one ever fails
    1) How would you configure it with those specs?
    2) Is there missing info to make a particular decision?

Here is my reply concerning data separate from index files:
See http://www.dizwell.com/prod/node/751 for the complete article.
"Why wouldn't you keep indexes separate from their tables?! Because doing so makes no difference to performance... and I patiently explained that a table and its index are never accessed simultaneously by a single user so that contention between them cannot arise. And yes, in a multi-user system, of course the two could be accessed simultaneously -but so could two tables, or two indexes. "

  • Which combination of graphics cards would you choose?

I have a minor dilemma. Due to some strange circumstances I ended up with 2 GeForce 8800 GT's and 1 Radeon X1900 XT.
I use a 30" monitor and 2 additional 20" monitors, thus the need for 2 cards. I certainly don't need 3, and frankly, I don't think the mac pro would handle a 3rd high power card very well in the 3rd or 4th slot anyway.
    So now the decision is:
    1) Dual GeForce 8800 GT's or
    2) 1 GeForce 8800 GT and 1 Radeon X1900 XT
It seems that for gaming there is no question the 8800 GT is better, but the X1900 XT is better for core image performance. What I need to figure out is if core image performance matters at all for any of the programs I use. These programs are used on a daily basis and are usually all open at the same time:
    Adobe PhotoShop CS3
    Adobe Illustrator CS3
Adobe LightRoom 2 or Bridge CS3 depending
    Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
    Microsoft Entourage
    Microsoft Remote Desktop
    Safari
    iTunes
    Cyberduck
About a million finder windows (OK, 5-10)
(and occasionally) Fusion with Windows XP to test things in Internet Explorer 7
Now, as far as I know, the only real programs that take advantage of core image (or would be slowed down by an 8800 GT) are Apple's Pro Apps like Final Cut Pro, Aperture, etc. I use a different machine for Final Cut Pro and I ditched Aperture for LightRoom so I basically don't use any "Pro Apps" on this machine now.
Do you think I would even notice a difference while working using the 8800 vs the 1900? If not, would it just make sense to go with the Dual 8800's? They're smaller than the 1900, use less power, and run cooler. If someone knows for sure if Adobe CS3 apps run poorly on the 8800 that would probably make the decision for me.
    Thanks!

You wish I said that I read the benchmarks at barefeats even though I very clearly said:
"It seems that for gaming there is no question the 8800 GT is better, but the X1900 XT is better for core image performance. What I need to figure out is if core image performance matters at all for any of the programs I use."
Why, after reading that, would you post benchmarks that tell me the 8800 is better for gaming and the 1900 is better for core image. I don't really understand...
Then you went on to talk about ATI 2600's and 3870's so I'm starting to think that maybe you just didn't read my post... I'm not considering a 2600 or a 3870. I tried to explain in my post very clearly that I am in possession of:
    2 x 8800 GT's
    1 x X1900 XT
Of those 3 cards, which 2 would you put in your computer if you ran the programs I listed above.
    Am I really that unclear?
As for your choice of going with a 2600 and a 3870 -- even though that wasn't one of the options and I don't have either of those cards in my possession -- I wouldn't put the 2600 in my computer just because of the noise. The 3870 seems like a great card (almost as good for gaming as the 8800 and amazing core image performance) but I'm not going to go spend $200+ when I have 3 cards sitting on my desk right now that I can use for free. The X1900 was too loud for me and I ended up modifying it with an Arctic Cooling silent kit, and from what I've read the 2600 is even louder than the X1900.
