Stuck with wireless internet, want wired dsl

I got a buddy in Eagle River, WI, that is stuck in a contract for many months with a verizon wireless internet plan with only 5GB of data, but he desperately needs to get a wired plan such as DSL or cable. He generally runs out of data within a week and cannot use the internet on his computer for the rest of the month (his usb dongle won't allow him connect). Is there any way at all to migrate from wireless data to DSL without a 500 dollar contract break fee or paying for both plans full price at the same time?

Sure, it's just a matter of routing.
If your existing network is using 192.168.1.x you can create another network between the two machines in a different subnet (e.g. 10.1.1.x). This 'network' could consist of just those two machines connected via an ethernet cable such that the Mac is 10.1.1.1 and the PC is 10.1.1.2.
Now all you need to do is decide which IP address you connect to. If you connect to the 192.168.1.x address you'll go over the wireless link. If you connect to the 10.1.1.2 address you'll use the wired connection.
The only trick is to use different subnets on each link - if you try to set both interfaces to the same network you will have problems.

    hello.
i am new to mac. im planning on switching by purchasing a MacBook Pro for my freshmen year in college.
i was just wondering if the MacBook Pro already has the equipment i need to have wireless Internet. what do i need to purchase along with my MacBook to have wireless Internet? i read about AirPorts but i don't understand it. i need to buy something separate to have wireless Internet?
also i am new to wireless Internet. i have dsl and my friends told me all i need to do is a wireless router. can someone shed some light on that area as well.
    thanks!

    Hello there:
When you go up to your Airport signal menu, located on your menu bar on the right side, it will list the available hotspots that are within wireless range. Some indeed are free. Select it, go to your browser and you are good to go. Some DO require subscription to access. Generally what happens with these is that you select the network, and then your browser will take you to a registraton page. You can then pick an access plan and pay with a credit card. The registration page will tell you what locations carry that plan. For example, there is one company that runs hot spots in all the major airports... you subscribe, and then whenever you are in an airport, you can access the web.

  • Airport Express with wireless internet 101

I want to be able to use my G4 powerbook without plugging it in through an ethernet cable for my internet connection. I have wireless internet, but I connect with it via ethernet through a router (Linkskys NR041), which is essentially a cable/DSL router. This seems something of a paradox to me. My computer picks up that there is a wireless signal, but I don't seem to have a way of accessing that without ethernet. Is Airport Express going to make this internet setup truly wireless for me, or do I need an Airport Extreme Base station as well? I don't really understand how the two of these are different, even after reading some of the reviews. I get lost as soon as it goes into technical language, so a simple explanation would be appreciated. Thanks anyone who has the time to help.

It sounds like your experience is what I am looking for, but I seem to be missing something with my setup. I have used wifi on my travels, so I'm familiar with doing the Airport setup, but this doesn't seem to work when I'm at home.
In Network, I have Location set to Automatic, but then when I click Assist Me and go to Diagnostics, it says it appears to be working normally. I click Yes anyway, and continue to select locationl, which is Automatic, then it asks me to Choose Network Port Configuration. If I choose Airport, the next window shows Airport with a green light, but shows that Airport Settings and Network Settings have failed. The right hand box asks me to select an Airport Network. None show up, so I click Closed Network down below. The next window then requires me to give a Network Name, and choose an option for Wireless Security, and give a password. I have no idea what WEP or WPA means, but anyway, no matter what I choose, the next page always tells me I am unable to join the Airport Network. Is there some information I am supposed to have that I don't? When I originally set up my computer with my ethernet connection, I just plugged into my router and the computer read all the information it needed and configured itself.

  • Help with wireless speed when wired is perfect!

I have Verizon FiOS internet and a Macbook 13" with OS X 10.6.4. When I am hard wired to my Verizon router, my internet speed is perfect (download/upload tests confirm this). When I am wireless, my internet crawls (and the download test reflects a FAR lower number). I spoke to Verizon and they said that it's not an internet problem because it works perfectly wired and that it's likely an Apple issue that's not allowing the wireless to work properly. My Verizon router IS next to my TV, but even when I moved it and put the computer right next to it, internet speed is incredibly slow. Let me know if you need further info and thanks so much in advance for any help!
    Eric

    Welcome to the discussions!
When I am wireless, my internet crawls (and the download test reflects a FAR lower number)
Is is possible for you to take the MacBook down to the coffee place, library or other location with wireless available? If so, you can test to see what type of connection you get.
If the MacBook connects well and pages load at good speeds...as I suspect they will...you will have confirmation that the MacBook is working fine and the issue is with the wireless on the FIOS router. If that's the case, you need to insist that FIOS techs come to your house so you can check out and test any changes they make before they leave.
If, on the other hand, you find that the MacBook still performs very slowly, then it's probably time to have the laptop's wireless card or internal antenna checked out for proper operation at the Apple store.

  • Slow connection with wireless, normal when wired

I've looked at the previous posts regarding this problem but I don't know how to do any of the recommended procedures. I can connect to the internet wirelessly with no problem but my wireless connection has become very slow all of a sudden (speakeasy speed test is 150-300 kbps). If I connect with a cable instead (wired connection) I get my great Comcast digital cable download speed on Speakeasy which is 15-16 Mbps! Previous posts mention looking at what the "RWIN" is set at and changing it but I'm not comfortable messing around with such basic Windows XP settings when I don't know how to reset back to the default if it doesn't work. Is there any patch from Linksys for fixing this or another easy way to fix it? Thanks! Kenshu

First thing is download firmware from www.linksys.com/download, and update it to latest version. Now follow this from a wired computer : Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser's address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Here enable MTU and set size to 1350. Go to security tab, and disable block anonymous internet requests. Change channel to 11. Go to advanced wireless settings and here change beacon interval to 50, fragmentation threshold to 2306, and RTS threshold to 2307, DTIM to 2. Now reboot modem and router.

  • Problem Sending Mail (using Mail 2.1.1) from Cafes with Wireless Internet

    Hi,
I have a Comcast.net mail account and Cable Internet at home. Receiving and sending mail works perfectly.
When I take my MacBook into any cafe that has wireless internet -- and I've tried this in multiple cities -- I can receive mail fine, but when I try to send mail I get an error. The error message doesn't seem to have anything of use in it -- just "Cannot send the message with server smtp.comcast.net."
When I then take the MacBook home, it instantly sends all the emails with no problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hello Ron.
    > I know that some ISP's require authentication when using their servers from outside their network.
It isn't your ISP that may require authentication with their SMTP server when connected to the internet via a different ISP, it is the ISP used for connecting to the internet if different from your own that dictates or may require this. If your ISP or the email account provider for the account does not support separate authentication with their SMTP server, trying to use authentication for the SMTP server will not work.
Is Comcast your ISP? If not, is your ISP's SMTP server authenticated and does your ISP support using or not using separate authentication with their SMTP server?
Time Warner (RoadRunner) is my ISP and RR does not have have an authenticated SMTP nor do they support it.

  • Problems with wireless internet on Imac

I have an IMAC since just over a year (MAC OS X vs. 10.6.6), and I have had over the last couple of months lots of problems with wireless connection.
Sometimes it connects without problem, but mostly I have to follow a 'Diagnostic Info' process: I select Airport, then select the wireless network, then have to restart, and then all lights turn green. I can connect then and only after a minute the pages do not load anymore.
Can anyone give me some troubleshooting tips ?

You could also have look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2790214&tstart=0

Rick's suggestion at looking at changing channels seems to be a good starting point.

  • WRT300N wont allow internet on wired DSL computer or wireless laptop

All lights are on. DSL works fine before connecting router. Connected router as shown in setup (computer to internet port on router, numbered port on router to modem) and as shown on website( computer to numbered port, internet port on router to modem).  The second setup allowed the router to be detected and setup finalized. Desktop pc has no internet when router connected. Wireless laptop shows connection but no internet. Anyone have any ideas?

Reset your router by holding down the reset button on the back for 30 sec. This should get you on the net but you will need to configure your router wireless settings to secure it. Good Luck!

  • How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?

I I have "Clear" so theres no place on the device to plug up an ethernet cord.. PLEASE HELP!!!! Would like to use the time capsule mainly as an external hard drive. PLEASE HELP!!!

For factory reset.. what model do you have??
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.
To join a wireless network and assuming you are using a Mac with v6 utility..
    1. Full reset of the TC. as above.
    2. Open the airport utility.. the Mac must have internet connection to the wireless router which is working.
Click on other wi-fi devices which is your reset TC.
    3. The utility will choose the wrong item. You are not creating a network.. so click options.
    4. Click add to existing network.
    5. Make sure you then get the right network.. this is from my main router.
    6. The utility will then use join. Fix the name to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric .. for better networking.
    7. The utility should complete the setup.. and you will probably need to fix a few things.. passwords or other errors fix them all up.
    8. You can now click edit and go the wireless tab and see the details.
This will give you extremely slow speeds.. it is highly NOT recommended.

  • IBook G3 Dual USB Not Finding Server With Wireless Internet

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB that has been working fine, then all of a sudden we could no longer get web sites to come up. It keeps saying server not found. I am using a Linksy wireless router and have cable internet.
I also have a desktop Mac that can still get on the net ok. It is plugged into the router by hardline. I unplugged the ethernet cable from the desktop Mac and plugged it into the iBook and still can not get online.
Anyone have any suggestions why I can no longer get on the net? We have not changed any settings. One minute it was fine, the next nothing.
When I go into AirPort, it is showing a strong signal.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

When I replied to your latest post you had indicated that you were still having problems getting on the Internet through a hard line. I see that that has changed.
Given the new data I think you are on the right path. If you zapped your PRAM and everthing is fine then disregard the rest of this message.
If things still don't work right...
New suggestion. Check the router and be sure the antennaes are secured to the back of the router and visually check them for signs of damage. If all looks good then cycle the router (if you have not done so already) and see if that helps. Its a long shot, but its worth a try.
If you are still having problems then taking the iBook to work and seeing if you can gain access to the Internet through your wireless network is a good idea (as long as the network is open). If you can get on-line then the router at home is suspect. If not then the card is suspect.
One last suggestion for the Mac. If you can, use another Airport card in your iBook. If you can get on-line with a different card then you know there is a problem with the other card and not the router. If you are still have problems getting on-line with a differemt card then getting another router may solve the issue.

  • Help with wireless internet connection

    Hi all,
Excuse me if I'm asking a repeated question, as being abit IT challenged, I just don't know where to look for a correct answer.
I've just gotten a new Powerbook G4 that came with the Airport Extreme, and also a wireless router.
Following the instruction that came with the router, I hooked up my ADSL modem to the router, and I tried to configure the wireless network.
As instructed, I was able to log onto the website provided by the router and ran the wizard to start the configuration process.
However, when all these are done, I couldn't log on to anyother website anymore, with Safari telling me that there's no internet connection.
From my desktop, I could see that Airport is on, and could locate the 'Default' network, plus other network within the neighbourhood. My service provider is using PPPoE.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what is wrong with my processes, and how I can rectify the problem?
I don't what other information you need in order to help me, but I'll be glad to provide it if asked.
    Thanks guys and girls!
    Cheers,

    Hi Kenny,
Firstly, make sure your wireless network name is something unique - the name of your first pet, or a random set of letters - so you can be certain you've connected to the right router.
Secondly, are you connecting wirelessly (ie. not with an ethernet cable) to the "web site" of the router? If you are then that means the wireless part is working OK.
If you use the System Preference application and look in your Network Preferences for your Airport connection and under the TCP/IP tab you should have it set to configure IPv4 using "DHCP".
Depending on the router you bought there should be an option in its configuration to turn on DHCP on your network (this is a different option to the one for using DHCP to connect to your ISP) - make sure it is enabled.
With these set up what does the Network Status pane in Network preferences say for your Airport connection?

  • MacBook Pro (Wireless Internet) - ethernet - Windows XP (no wireless) ?

    Hello,
I have MacBook Pro with wireless internet that works just dandy.
I also have a cheap IBM ThinkPad running Windows XP. It's from the stone age, so it has no wireless internet card.
Ethernet cable successfully connects the two, and I can transfer files back and forth using smb://, no problem.
But I really want is to be able to get internet on Windows using connection from my MacBook Pro.
Is this possible? Can I do it in system preferences somewhere, or would I have to go buy a router or something?
EDIT: I'm a Web Developer, so I just want to be able to connect to see how HTML files look on IE. If there is a way to setup a localhost and plug IP into Windows XP, that'd be a good enough solution.
RE-EDIT: Just figured it out on my own :S
    Thanks,
    -Adam
