Hello, I am a film student, and was wondering the legal bits about splitting a used copy of final cut studio. As I am a student (student = little money) it is one of the only ways to get my hands on a copy for my self.

Ah - i'm certainly not advocating "stealing" - which is very very wrong. I'm answering more the post about getting license keys - purchase - for earlier copies of FCP - which I did read about a long long time ago on the forum - hence my comment. That's why I put BB.
Students are a rare breed of 'other folk' when innovation today - is the artist of tomorrow yadee yadee ya. However doing it the correct way is the only way.

Online where exactly? Post a URL. The application is only legally available for purchase as a direct download from the App Store. Or are you talking about the trial version?

So I bought a Used copy of final cut pro 7, but i cant use it because I need a serial number and the serial number that came with it doesn't work. What do I do?

I bought my copy from ebay and when i got it I installed it, but every time i click on final cut pro 7 it asks for a serial number and when i put the on that came with it, it tells me it an invalid serail number. It is kinda making me want ti throw my mac out the window and just stick with windows.

First, find out if you bought an "Upgrade" version, or a "Full" version.
If you have an "Upgrade" version, it will require two serial numbers to work - first, the serial number of the last "Full" version you are upgrading from, then the serial number of the "Upgrade" software you are installing.

Bought a hard copy of Final Cut Pro 7 a few years ago, now I want to update it to the new FCP without having to repurchase it.

Originally, I bought Final Cut Pro 7 as a hard copy (at the apple store, not app store). Now, since there have been many new updates to the software (Final Cut Pro X, and so on) - I made an attempt to download the updates from the app store; but it doesn't seem to realize that I already have Final Cut Pro installed, and it's trying to make me repurchase it (I'm not in the mood to spend another $300). I'm aware that people who purchased Final Cut Pro on the app store are able to receive updates for free - so why can't I?

FCPX is a from the ground new app, sharing just the name of legacy FC/p.
no upgrade path avail. But worth every penny
download the 30d free trial first! It's a very different app compsred to what you are use to.

HT4714 I downloaded a trial copy o final cut pro x. Download was fine and I opened the program and go the editing screen-it looked fine. I tried to open this morning and got error code 600, what happened?

I opened final cut pro x after the trial download and all was okay. I tried this morning and got the 600 error code message.

Has the 30 day trial expired?

Final Cut Pro - Vanished?

I'm a graduate student in video art preparing for a big installation in less than a week, and this morning I go to open up my copy of Final Cut Pro and get the watermarked question mark of doom on the software's icon in the dock.
Where the heck did it go?
So of course, I look everywhere -- it seems to be nowhere to be found.
Any suggestions or ideas as to what might have happened?
I sure didn't uninstall it-- at least not to my knowledge!
The only recent major change I have made (within the past week) was to install the Adobe Creative Suite's Design Premium package. Could I have somehow nudged Final Cut Pro off of my computer during that process? But if so, how?
I'm totally confused, and concerned. I don't have my Final Cut Pro disks with me here (they're in another state and I'll probably have to see if I can get them overnighted to me).
Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated.
Could it still be hiding somewhere on my computer?? I can't find it anywhere.

That was one of the first things I checked. It's unfortunate-- the .fcp files don't know where to go. When I try to open them I get the indication that no specific program is available to open them, and then they ask which application to choose from. Final Cut is nowhere to be found.
I think it might be gone for good? My guess is that it was somehow deleted. I've no idea how or why (I really don't know how I could have done anything so foolish-- I use Final Cut all the time and it's the backbone, software-wise, of a lot of my creative projects, so.... not sure).
I hope there's nothing wrong with my hard drive?

How to install Final Cut Pro on 2 computers with a multiple user license

Our church purchased a multiple user copy of Final Cut Pro, and the music minister who bought it downloaded it onto his computer. I need to get a copy onto my computer - but he doesn't know what I need to do to get a copy onto mine. Do I have to have him log into ITunes on my computer to download it - or is there just a file that downloaded onto his that I can get - or what? I have seen some discussion of their being certificates for using it that he should have received - but he doesn't remember if he has anything. Any assistance here would be appreciated - in the Final Cut Pro site it is very unclear. Thanks in advance.

I don't know what the procedure is to download it from Apple but you can speed things up by simply copying the FCP X app across to your computer using either a hard drive or memory stick.

Final Cut Pro 4.5 on Macbook Pro?

I have a licensed copy of Final Cut Pro ver. 4.5. I ditched my lasy Power PC and have a new MacBook Pro. I assume that FCP 4.5 will not run on the ntel platform. Can I upgrade to a newer versionthat will work on my MacBook? I am not sure I want FCPX right now.

Just to add a bit of price info to Ian Brown's and Tom Wolsky's replies: Although it's possible to find a copy of Final Cut Studio 3 on Amazon, the prices are typically $1,200 to 1,600; a new upgrade box set is currently about $1,000. By way of comparison, FCPX is $300. It's hard to make a truly fair comparison since the new product is so different from the old.

FINAL CUT PRO 3

I just bought an unopened (new) copy of final cut pro 3 for $150 Australian, everything seems good codes etc , all manuals included. I'd obviously like to buy current pro but too much. I'm a novice who wants to do some real editing and make that my hobby. First problem was tutorial disk , sample videos keep stopping , message says not enough ram etc . My real question is am I wasting time with old software or perhaps can I get partial updates for it ?? Is pro 3 out of date for my Imac ?? Would appreciate your views..

I used to run FCP 1 on a PowerMac G3 and want to run it on my Powerbook G4. I know about the updates to the new versions , but I was wondering if FCP 1 will work in the classic mode.

Michael, if you can operate classic mode, you probably have os9.2.2 on your machine.
open preferences and see if you have the option to change the start up os. It's on the bottom somewhere. Boot up in os 9, install FCP and see if it works.
But whether or not FCP1 will operate in 9.2.2 is a good question. I started with 1.25 and the OS at that time was 9.04 If I remember correctly. You HAD to update to 9.2.2 if you wanted to install FCP3

Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 with leopard Urgent help!

a few days ago i installed OS X 10.5 (Leopard) on my 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 (2 GB RAM) using the "Erase and Install" option and today i copied the Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 application onto my desktop from a backup i had. Now as soon as is try to open the application it immediately quit!

They only added Leopard support to the latest version (6.0.2) I'm afraid.
Per the following KB article, FCP 5.1.4 and above are supported on Leopard: Final Cut Pro 4.5: Not supported on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
To the OP: you did the correct thing by doing a clean install of Leopard, but you must also reinstall Final Cut Studio from the install discs in order to have a properly functioning copy.

Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 crashes when using QuickTime conversion export

Our copy of Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 has started to crash when exporting using QuickTime Conversion. It gets about 66% complete, then dumps out. I have updated FCP using Software Update and QT to the latest version. Any ideas why this happening? Pro Kit 4.5 installed. QuickTime Pro 7.4.5
My previous post had the wrong version of FCP. Dyslexia sets in.

I think that was solved with 10.4.10.
About the crash problem, you would post the system configuration of that computer.

Adobe Premiere 6.5 and final cut pro 4

hello can you help me too i recently bought a d,a upgraded to 1ghz duel 1 gb ram but when i try to capture video on final cut pro on os 10.4.9 i get dropped frame error how can i get round this am i doing some thing wrong or is it a software problem i know its only a copy of final cut pro not a legal version would using a copy of final cut pro hd solve my problem? as i here it is possible that their is an issue with 10.4.9 i am using adobe premere 6.5 which has dropped like 4 frames in the full length but still captures the video how can i resolve the drop frames issue in final cut prowould allocating more ram help????
i am conserned that my upgrdaed digital audio mac is not up to the job of editing video duel 1ghz processor 1 gb ram i have two hard drives one 80gb hard drive for the system and a 250gb hard drive for the video capture i cant see dropped frames on my digital 8mm sony cam corda but the dropped frames seem apparent on the mac. would setting more ram to the application help more.
i have been also exsperiencing problems with quick time too
im using a firewire connection 400kbs
because the machine bus is decreased could this affect capture due to the upgrade? i think its a giga bite upgrade
i have had to mount one hard drive the 250gb one upside down could this affect the system?
as ive decided to add hard drive coolers on the hard drives

No... the Dv500 (I have one, with P6.02) came with software that is specifically written to link the card's hardware to the appropriate software "hooks" inside Premiere
Without that software to act as a bridge between card and Premiere, Premiere doesn't know the card exists
You might Google to see if Pinnacle ever wrote software to make that card work with Premiere, but that would be the only way to get them to work together that I know about
As long as the files you are are DV AVI type 2 with 48Khz sound, they will edit just fine in Premiere

Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and Intel Core Duo

Hey there!
Not sure where else to post this, so here goes.....
I'm a total "newbie" and don't know SQUAT about anything but I'm trying to understand "video editing".
A copy of "Final Cut Pro HD" that is supposed to be "4.5" has come my way. Will this work on my iMac? Can I load it in without any problems? Should I even bother?

The first version of FCP that was compatible with Intel processor Macs was version 5.1. The current version available is 6.0 (part of FCS 2).
FCP 5.0 and older (including version 4.5) was written for PPC processor Macs and are not compatible with the Intel processors in your iMac. If you can get it to install, it won't run properly.
