Studying Abroad.

Hello!
I am studying abroad in England next semester. I have an iPhone 5 and I was wondering if I could suspend my Verizon plan and then put my US number on an old phone. Take my iPhone 5 to England and use one of their services their by using the sim card. Is my Verizon iPhone 5 capable of doing that/can I do that?

I believe the iPhone 5 is factory unlocked so you can use a local SIM card in the phone while in England.

  • Studying abroad in London for 4 months - international plan

I'm going to be studying abroad in the UK for 4 months starting in January. I want to be able to use my iPhone while I'm abroad, in the most cost-efficient way possible. I've looked at the AT&T World Traveler Plan that is $5.99 per month, and 99 cents per minute. 99 cents per minute seems ridiculous! Is that plan in addition to the basic U.S. iPhone plan that I have now or does it take the place of my current plan?
I've read stories here on the discussions about people getting a $1,000+ wireless bill for their overseas usage, and I want to avoid that.
What about the option to unlock the iPhone from AT&T and use a SIM card from a wireless carrier in the UK? I've been told that wireless companies are required by law to do this if the customer asks... but the AT&T customer service rep. I asked today said this is not possible because of the exclusive agreement between AT&T and Apple. What's the deal with this?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you do get a UK SIM (on your unlocked iPhone or on a cheap UK mobile), it will not be cheap to use to ring the US, whether you use Vodaphone or Tesco - sign up to 18185.co.uk and use their numbers to make cheap US calls - currently .5p/min on landlines and 1p/min on mobiles. See

  • Student Discount valid for students studying abroad?

I am a Canadian student who just graduated high school, and will be pursuing my post secondary school studies abroad in England.  I want to buy a macbook air before going to uni and have found that it is cheaper to buy one here in Canada using the student discount rather than in England.  That, coupled with the fact that I will be coming back regularly, and then back for good after 5 years, I was wondering whether I am able to make use of the Apple Student Discount here in Canada for my macbook air purchase?  I have a lot of friends here, that will be attending canadian universities, so i'm also wondering whether, if I am personally not able too, whether I could take advantage of their discount?
    Thanks ahead of time.

You can use your student discount even if you're studying abroad since Apple also offers student discount in the UK.
If you want to use your friend's student discount, they have to buy the Macbook Air for you.  That might be a little on the tricky side if you need to get your Macbook serviced in the UK and the receipt, if they asked for it, is not under your name.
To be safe, you better purchase it yourself.

  • Studying abroad in Greece, how do I change the language?

    Hello,
Well within the next six months I will be in Greece studying abroad and I want to change the display of my computer to Greek. There is no option for it in the languages so I'm not sure where to go from here to change the display and fonts.

Nevermind, you can just ignore this I figured it out. Did not realize the international button near the volume to change the setting.

  • I am currently studying abroad in Italy and my imessage has been working with wifi up until now. I just wen to PAris for the weekend and when I came back it says that Imessage is waiting for activation. How do I fix this? Thanks!

I am currently studying abroad in Italy and my imessage has been working with wifi up until now. I just wen to PAris for the weekend and when I came back it says that Imessage is waiting for activation. How do I fix this? Thanks!

If iMessage has become deactivated on your iPhone, which, apparently it has, the phone will need to send an SMS to activate it again. Therefore, you'll need a cellular connection.

  • Study abroad subscription options

    Hi,
I am studying abroad in France for the semester and would like to make calls to the US. I have a couple of questions regarding the best option(s) and charges. I am looking into buying an unlimited subscription to the US and I am planning on buying a new cell phone when I get to France.
    1. If I call someones cell phone via my computer, will they be charged an international fee?
    2. Can I set up call forwarding to my phone so that I use my subscription?
    3. If I have a basic cell phone, can I use skype on that phone to call another cell phone in the US? If so, is there a way to do it without either person incurring international charges?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    1. Skype doesn't charge call receiver, this is something your friend can check with their mobile service provider.
    2. If you forward call to your mobile and subscription covers your mobile number then it will work. For example if you get a prepaid card in France, forward calls to your France number then you need a subscription that covers France mobile numbers: http://www.skype.com/go/subscriptions
    3. Currently Skype doesn't have Skype To Go number for France, this means that unfortunately it is not possible to use regular cell phone through Skype.
For example your friend in US can set up Skype To Go number that they would call from regular mobile phone and have your France number as their contact.
More information about Skype To Go: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/features/allfeatures/skype-to-go-number/
Maybe you wish to look into mobile device that has WiFi connection and supports Skype: http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-mobile/other-supported-devices/

  • Will Apple stores in Germany replace your iPhone if there is internal hard drive problems from a phone from the US. I am studying abroad and won't be home until December

Will Apple stores in Germany replace your iPhone if there is internal hard drive problems from a phone from the US. I am studying abroad and won't be home until December

You can try, but the iPhone warranty terms state that Apple "may" restrict warranty/service to country of original purchase...key word here is "may".
    Good luck.

  • Best way to use my Verizon iPhone 5 while studying abroad in London

I was told that I can put the phone in airplane mode, turn wi-fi on (wherever I have it) and there won't be any extra charge on all apps/texting/calling.
I was also told that in addition to doing this, I can buy a SIM card in London for calling/texting in a pay-as-you-go manner.
I know very little about cell phones/data plans/SIM cards/anything technology-related, so I would like some clarification on this stuff. I know the international plan from Verizon (especially for 3-4 months) is astronomical so I'm looking for the cheapest/easiest way I can use my smartphone abroad. For the most part, I would just be texting with people back home who also have iPhones, so we would be using iMessage instead of texts (which counts as data, correct?).
I'm clearly clueless about this stuff, please help!

There are 3 big providers in Hungary: t-mobile.hu, telenor.hu and vodafone.hu. Their websites are working in English, too, so you could check them out before you actually get there. T-mobile and telenor definitely have pay-as-you or prepaid plans. I also know from experience that telenor's phone customer service also is available in English locally but I assume the other two have that, as well. If you want to use your Hungarian sim card anywhere else in Europe, you will pay for roaming but I don't know much about this piece to the picture. Enjoy your time in Budapest! It's a great place.

  • I am studying abroad in Chile, and my hardware is failing on me.

Specifically, there are red lines across the screen. I know it's either the logic board or graphics card because I just had my logic board and other parts replaced last November 2013 when this same thing happened. I have no idea what to do seeing as I am STUDYING out of the country and cannot have Apple call me and I cannot spend another $300+ to send it away for who knows how long.... Suggestions?

    ems223,
there are Apple-authorized service centers within Chile, e.g. MacOnline.

  • Unlocking an iPhone 5 for student studying abroad/saving contacts

My son will be studying in China for two years. We have an iPhone 5 for him through Verizon. If we have his iPhone unlocked in the U.S. so that he can use a Chinese cell phone carrier, will he lose all of his contacts?

Your Verizon iPhone 5's sim slot is already officially unlocked. The phone will work on an supported GSM carrier's network, anywhere in the world, including all GSM carriers in the US.
There's nothing you need to do other than him purchasing a local sim when he gets to China. And no, this won't affect any data on the phone.
You don't need to contact Verizon about anything, other than stopping your current service.

  • Trying to send iMessage to daughter studying abroad.

Sent multiple iMessages to my daughter studying overseas. All are coming back as "not delivered" since 9-21-13. I have an original iPad and no new update on my end. My daughter has an iPhone 5 and if she did a update on her end is this why the messages are coming back as not delivered? I noticed that it says her number is not registered with iMessage on my iPad. Any advise, thanks.

iMesage and facetime have been buggy all week. There has been no official word but people have guessed that it's issues with apple's servers and traffic.
I haven't seen any solutions yet beyond just waiting for Apple to fix things.

  • Problems with macbook pro abroad URGENT

Hello everyone, my name is Tobias and I am a new macbook pro user currently studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain. I had a great two month start with my mac and then all of a sudden, it stopped charging. Everything was working fine, then it died and the green light would not show up when I attempted to charge it. So I brought it down to the local service center, thinking that it was something that was under my first year warranty. They got back to me in a week saying it was in fact not under my warranty because it was water damage. I have no idea how this happened and I am upset to say the least. Now the authorized service center tells me that they will contact apple and get back to me with a price of how much it will cost to repair it. I was wondering if I have any other options than to pay their huge sum to fix it. I have heard of some sites, such as safeware.com, that will insure your mac in case of spills, etc. Can/ Should I take that route? As I said before, I am a new mac user and am completely unsure of what to do. Any help that can be brought forth will be more than greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Tobias

Tobias: There are several small "labels", for lack of the right word, inside the machine that change color if they are exposed to liquids. When those have changed color, it is assumed that the machine has suffered liquid damage (typically a spill, but any single drop of moisture that gets into the wrong place can trigger a change in color). Such damage is not covered by AppleCare, and to put the machine back in like-new condition so it won't appear to be liquid damaged again if it ever goes back for another repair, the parts that contain the liquid-sensing labels and any other parts that appear to have gotten wet are replaced as a matter of course. This is all quite apart from whatever the owner's actual complaint about the machine was; repairing that may involve replacing additional parts. This is going to be very expensive for you. You should be sure to find out whether your original Apple warranty and/or the AppleCare Protection Plan you may have added to it will be back in effect again if you have the repairs done, or whether any warranty coverage has been permanently invalidated. That information may help you decide whether it's worth paying for the repair, or whether it would be a better investment just to replace the machine instead.
Note that I have no comment either way on the presence or absence of actual water damage in your machine: we can't say anything about that because we don't know the facts at first hand. Ask to have the moisture sensors shown to you, at the very least.

  • Video Chat not working abroad

I am currently studying abroad in Italy, and am suddenly having difficulties video chatting, and audio chatting with people in the US. I was not having any issues until the past few days. Now when I try to video chat with someone at home, regardless of who initiates the chat, it says that the other person did not respond, when, in fact, the receiving party did accept the invitation.
I have tried changing the port number from 5190 to 433, as I saw that as a solution on one of these threads. I have, however, restored it to the initial setting.
I have plugged directly into the modem, so I do not believe that this is an internet connection issue. Also, one of my roommates also has a macbook and she has been able to video chat with people in the US. I can also chat with her, so I assume that it is an international problem.
I am unsure what has occurred over the past few days that has suddenly caused my video chat to stop working.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I really want to be able to see my family.

    Gents,
well reseting the routers and deleting the wifes contact and re-entering didn't work...any other ideas
Just out of curiosity, are they both on the same BBID, or do they each have their own BBID ?
The reason why I am asking is that it was said before in an other message group that if you use the same BBID, then the video chat is likely to not be working
They will work if BBIDs are the same provided that you set up the contact using  the other playbook's PIN number.
If they have different blackberry IDs then the contact can be set up using the other Playbook's Blackberry ID
No other email address will work  You must use Blackberry ID or PIN as the contact address.
