Stuffed my iMac monitor - shows vertical coloured lines

Hello,
I was trying to configure an external monitor and failed. I changed some resolutions and now get lots of bright, vertical, coloured lines as the Mac starts up.
The startup screen is fine, I can access single user mode or open-firmware.
I've reset the pram (which fixed the screen perspective back to normal on startup - but the vertical lines continue to appear.
If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Greg

I'm not sure if removing it would have worked, since it had changed my monitor resolutions elsewhere.
Anyway, Stephane (who wrote the app) told me how to resolve...
Firstly: I had already zapped the PRAM, and NVRAM.
Secondly: I could restart in single user mode (start holding Apple-S). To make the filesystem writeable I mounted it "/sbin/mount -uw /"
These fixed the start up resolution, but still gave me the vertical lines after startup.
Then, Stephane wrote:

The best solution finally would be to delete the custom resolutions
completely from the system preferences.
These custom res are stored in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides.
What exact file it is, is depending on your system: sort all the directories/files by date, the one that was modified recently (yesterday or so) corresponds to your added custom resolutions.
Remove this file, and start again: you'll be back at the starting point.
I hope this helps,

I actually went to that directory, found that file (which was also a directory), opened that directory, sorted it, and rm'd the newest file. All is now well.
Thank you for responding, and to anyone who has been thinking about how to help...

My touchsmart is showing vertical colourful lines when I try to boot the computer. I called HP and they said I need a new computer. Does anyone have a solution to the problem?

Model number would help a grat deal...
The IQ7xx units are prone to a certain kind of failure that looks like this, it is gnerally not something the average person would repair with a 3 generation old PC.

  • Why does my imac show vertical coloured lines on bootup? Then the screen turns solid white

My iMac 3.4 i7 OS 10.6.8 is showing 5 Virtical Coloured lines when I turn it on. The imac does not boot. The screen goes clear white. Anbody aware of this problem if so what is the cause?

    Hi Leon Ellenport,
It seems I have the same issue with my iMac, and I am thinking about my plan of action. Did you ever fixed this issue? If yes, how?

  • IBook G4 14" freezes at start up or just shows vertical color lines

Hello, I am struggling with my 14" iBook G4. It either freeze at the early phase of starting up with gray background/apple icon, or shows vertical colorful lines on the screen. I tried to wipe out the HD and reinstall OS, it froze during installing. Whatever is shows on the screen does not mirror to an exteral display. I don't know if anyone has experience on this, a display issue, HD issue, or a more serious logic board issue. By the way, I was able to install OS TIGER on its HD by starting it in target mode and hooking up to another ibook with firewire cable. Any suggestion will be very appreciated. - I am not very experienced with Mac, trying to learn more at this forum. Thank you.

Hello, Cornelius. I am back. Here is what I did. I inserted the hardware test disk, restarted computer, while holding down "c" key. I could hear disk spinning. The colorful lines showed at begining, then they went away, leaving faint backlight on the screen, and DVD drive went silent. Then I restarted it, while holding down apple+L keys, like what you suggested. Disk spins, colorful lines stay, and then everything goes silent. While I was doing this, I hook the mini DVI port to a CRT monitor which I know works well for my powerbook. But no video signal was transferred to it at all, except a turning-on signal. I have another disk says "applecare protection plan", aslo says"techtool deluxe". I don't know what this is for, should I try this? I will be waiting for your or other pros' further instruction. I feel the frustration, but enjoy the learning process. Thank you very much for your precious suggestions.

  • Video bug - vertical coloured lines (Oly E-M5)

    Gday all
Im having a strange bug with video playback in LR4 where the video plays with audio however there is vertical coloured lines through it.  If I export it, it works fine, if I play it outside LR4 it works fine.  Its just within LR4.  Has anyone had this?  Btw, the video playback works fine with my E-5.  I noticed it in 4.3 of Lightroom but to be honest I didnt place too much emphasis on it at the time cause I was showing some video and ended up viewing it through explorer.  The after updating to 4.4 it was still there.
Below is what it looks like.  Im running Win 8 Pro with teh Media Centre pack, 16Gb ram with an i7.  But as I said, it runs great outside of LR.

No one else has had this happen?

  • Vertical coloured lines on screen

Vertical coloured lines recently appeared - most stayed permanently - on screen. On-line research tells me that models with serial numbers W8....have this problem now. Mac retailers here say they have never heard of this. Solutions? Suggestions please.

Read the last twenty or so comments and then follow the directions from others to call Apple Care to see if your iMac qualifies for the program for Apple to replace the display out-of-warranty. This mostly applies to Early 2006 iMacs Core Duos.

The important piece of information is that for others Apple Care covered repair under EM80 article.

  • Interactive report showing vertical grid lines

Has anyone adjusted an interactive report so that it shows the vertical grid lines? I see the horizontal lines by default but I am thinking the vertical lines will make my data easier to read. Just can't figure how to do that.

    Hello Edward,
@Jeff Eberhard has a good solution for showing vertical grid lines.
Here is the solution for whole grid for interactive report to be included in the Region Header/Region Footer/Page HTML Header:

  • Has anyone had a problem with a late 2009 27 inch iMac display showing vertical lines?

Can only display and work the computer in safe mode.
When performing a regular boot, the lines appear at the Apple logo and then the screen goes blank and stays blank.
Problem first started couple of weeks ago with the computer/display freezing with "confetti-like" marks all over the screen when returning from screen saver power save mode.
I'd venture to guess it's a graphics card issue. Any input would be appreciated.

Hi MateoL, sorry for bothering you with this old problem you had, but I have the same iMac, and I think the exact same issue. I wanted to ask you whether you managed to solve this issue? What was the cause of it? I am trying to figure what would be the best thing to do.
Like you, after some tests/repairs my screen went back to normal, but soon enough it went back to this state. How about you?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Vertical, coloured lines

    hi,
I'm getting the strangest thing happening. After restart the screen goes gray then random coloured vertical lines draw on the screen.. trying to restart by pressing the start button for several seconds doesn't help... the macbook just turns off then back to the vertical lines.. took out the power plug but that didn't help either... the only thing that got the MB back to normal was taking the battery out then back in. After that the MB restarted normally.
I have a second MB, which had the same problem today. One of the two has had it's RAM upgraded the other hasn't been openen at all. So it's probably not a RAM issue.. the only thing I can think of right now is the heat. It's over 30 deg C and the MB's seem to be running very hot... but that's just a guess.
    thank's for any feedback.
    rupert

    Hey guys,
I would like to point out that, while zapping the PRAM is a great quick fix, it is most certainly not an acceptable form of fixing the problem.
The problem, as we can be 99% sure of, is that Apple has released a faulty OS that has adversely affected our MacBooks, and has caused us all some considerable worry and stress.
The most obvious solution is to wait for a patch in the next OS release (10.4.8); and all we can do is make sure that they are aware of the problem (which I'm sure they are).
As one of you pointed out earlier, another possible fix involves reverting to 10.4.6. I would highly discourage that any of us do such a thing; because it is not US that should be suffering or making change for a problem that is most clearly APPLE'S fault.
I would prescribe a march straight over to your nearest Apple Store; but when you get there, please make sure that you show them this STILL unanswered forum, and don't let them make you think that this is in any way your fault. IT'S THEIRS
One last thing. In response to "nvram -p = SystemAudioVolume w; in the case of 10.4.7." Have any of you observed, that when you press the mute button on your keyboard that only the bezel panel (the square, grey, box that appears and shows the level of your volume) responds to the key; while the icon in the upperright corner stays the same.
I never really gave it much thought until I saw "SystemAudioVolume w." Connection, or coincedent?
    Thank you,
    ClyPinto

  • Help! Dell 1355cnw Prints Vertical Colour Lines and Blotches

Question = Have I messed my printer drum and/or belt?
History = My 1355cnw recently started printing short vertical magenta scuff lines at the tops of each page over the same 15mm width in the same place each time. I cleaned the fuser with IPA and used the toner cleaning wand on the toners to no effect.
I the used an airduster to blow out all the dust and loose toner from all accessible angles/ holes in casing
Doing this prevented the paper pickup shoe from working as it had become contaminated with dust so i fed a piece of paper partially dampened with IPA into the printer via the tray printing a blank page - it came out dry but there are now scuff marks of all colours across the width of the page :o(
The first page printed of several blank pages also has repetitive colour toner coloured blotches up the page.
Post print opening the back door reveal toner on the transfer belt and the sponge grip wheel where i'm sure I haven't seen it before.
Additionally, since this incident i am now seeing scuff marks being transfered onto the non-print of the paper - presumeably from all the loose toner flying around.
I have printed out the 4 colour configuration chart and the drum refresh configuration chart and they both have the same sreak paterns down them (JPGs available) but they look a mess!  They look like a grand prix started on them!
Have I messed my printer and if so which bits?  Any and all help offered is greatly appreciated to cover my blushes in making the print issue 100 times worse!!
    Thank
    Andy

Reply much appreciated. Although I do not claim to have much knowledge of this type of hardware and software problems but they do give me a challenge. I have been trying various things. while I was doing this, switching the pc on and off, at one point the display on LCD came back.
When I checked the status in Device manager the error message,'WINDOWS HAS STOPPED THIS DEVICE AS WINDOWS HAS REPORTED PROBLEM (CODE 43) had disappeared and it said.' The device is working properly'!
I notice that the CPU temp rises upto about 51 deg C, the fan goes crazy (fast and slow)and the temp falls down and fluctuates between 27 and 48.
The screen goes blank again and come on some time and most times not!
To me it looks like that the chipset gives up when too hot.
I intend to open up the laptop and see if the GPU chip is seated, has good contact with its heatsink etc.
If anyone has any further suggestions, will be appreciated.
