Stuffit & zip files won't unarchive completely

Here's another issue I'm having (I've got time today, so I figure I'll get them all out there:)
I recieved a sit file from a client through email (I'm using Mail). When I tried to unstuff it, it wouldn't unarchive completely. The stuffit progress bar got about 3/4 full, then stopped & estimated time started going up to like 272875 hours.
I let it continue for a while (about an hour...it was only a 1mb file btw) but eventually had to force quit stuffit, although it never actually froze or crashed. Then I noticed that the file it created on my desktop had some, but not all, of the items inside. This file was reading a size of 3 gb!!!
So, I had the client re-stuff & re-send.
Same issue.
I tried opening stuffit expander & dropping the file on to the icon and tried file / expand in the menu.
No dice.
I tried opening w/ older version of stuffit deluxe 6.
Nope. File type not supported.
I even asked the client to try zipping the file using osx's built-in functionality, but then I got "Unable to unarchive (Error - 1 Operation not permitted)" from Archive Utility.
I just don't know if it's a problem w/ stuffit, or if something's getting weird throught the file transfer, or it's if it's an os thing. Anyone out there hear of something like this happening before?
I'm running osx 10.4.6 & stuffit expander 10.0.2.
Client is running osx 10.3.9 & stuffit 7.
Thanks:)

Can you use the command-line "unzip" tool to look at the archive's contents (maybe there are filenames that have weird characters or are otherwise troublesome on some OS X disks) and do an integrity check? If the archive is called Archive.zip in your home directory, use the command unzip -lt Archive.zip in a Terminal.app window.
Can you use that same tool to expand the archive? unzip -v Archive.zip (-v will give some information about each file as it goes, so you might be able to see at what point it has trouble).

  • Zip files won't unzip

I have downloaded a couple of zip files, and am trying to use the default Archive utility to unzip them. Instead of opening the files within the zipped folder I'm getting a .cpgz folder with the exact same name... then when I try to open that file it makes a duplicate .zip folder and I just go in circles.
Any idea what the **** is going on?

Go to http://www.stuffit.com/mac-expander.html and download the free Stuffit Expander. Once it's on your machine, drop a zip file onto it, and see if it expands. That will eliminate some possible broken items.

  • .001 Zip file won't decompress

I'm having problems downloading zip files. They're actually zip files broken into parts - and inevitably the first of them will not decompress. The system goes through the whole download, and then just freeze up on the Decompression stage. Sometimes it will try to decompress as long as I am willing to let it try and other times I get a decompression failed message. This only happens with the file with a .001 associated with it...
Anybody have any idea why this is happening?

    Are you using Stuffit Expander?

  • Mac zip files won't open in Windows PC

I have been right clicking and compressing raw .mov video files to send from the UK to Australia via wetransfer. I am using a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. Each set of zipped files is between 3GB - 8GB in size and they (compress) and zip and send fine. But my client is on a Windows PC and only now tells me they are having problems opening the "zip" files I have sent them. They get the message that the zip is "invalid". Any ideas what can be wrong here? I tested them on my Mac by reopening and they work file.
    Many thanks in advance.

Step one would be to try them on a local windoze box. That should give you some indication of what might be wrong. Alternatively, try the Terminal command gzip. Read about it by typing in man gzip in a Terminal window and then pressing the return key.

  • Zip file won't open

I have lost a few photos transfering files from the macbook g3 iphoto to the aluminum macbook and iphoto 8.0.4. The info (name, size, date) are visible but no photo. I was short of space in the ibook so I backed up iphoto on a thumb drive and 'archived it' into a .zip file. This file will not open in the macbook. (Error 1 operation not allowed). The file is 516 mb zipped. The ibook has 1.75gb available on 10 gb HD but part way thru the unarchiving process it announces the startup disc is almost full and then the ibook screen goes black. Any idea how to get at this data.

Some of the issues you relate to may have something to do with
the differences in iPhoto versions and the possibility of their being
not so directly compatible when moving images the way have did.
The compressed file should be transferred unopened to a larger
external hard disk drive or somewhere the file can be put on to
a DVD or other media, should the lack of free space in which
to open & view the compressed file be a problem in a hard drive.
Although it may not help the situation, there also are other
unarchiver software types out there which could also open
the compressed file; but only if there is adequate space in
the location (or another location can be selected) to do so.
The Unarchiver - an alternative to BOMArchiveHelper. app:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/theunarchiver.html
    The problem sounds more complex, perhaps, than it is;
or maybe it really is complex due to how you have made
this archive of the iPhoto image library from the older
iBook (? you say Macbook G3) and its iPhoto version.
Accessing the jpg images should be relatively easy if they
are not messed up in some odd copy of the actual iPhoto
version from the older OS. This is where your description
is a bit lost on me. There is a way to make backups and
also copies of the iPhoto libraries themselves; but there
have been some issues (supposedly addressed) in how
older iPhoto images were seen - or not, by the newer
    version of iPhoto.
If there is not enough free space in a computer to open
a large compressed file (and run the apps, swap files
and other Virtual Memory the computer needs to work)
then the file should be opened elsewhere.
A computer's hard disk drive, where the system resides,
should never be more than 80% full. Mine are 50% full.
Backups to DVDs of images, music and other works in
progress could be made to safeguard them. Some types
of libraries may not be the best way to do this; in the case
of my own images, I do not use iPhoto. My jpg and other
images are saved by date into folders, by year; any edits
are saved in their own folder in the date folder, direct from
the camera into a new folder on the desktop. One of my
favorite apps is ToyViewer for image editing, a freeware.
{My edits also are not very complex since I try to duplicate
my skills as a film photographer, in the new digital world.
Photoshop & other alterations take away from experience.
If I were to take 10 hours painting my images fantastic, I
could hardly justify not just taking up fine art. I can do it.
    Simple resizings, rotations and rename images= editing.}
Please explain in more detail about the way the image in
the older computer were archived, and where; and what
they were a part of. I don't know if I understand correctly.
PS: If the image file you compressed (assuming it is only
images and not part of the older iPhoto app) you could
try to see if using FireWire target disk mode could be used
to get the files direct from the iBook hard drive into another
computer; not sure what MacBook you have, some new
ones lost the FireWire ports. The compressed file could
be moved from iBook to another computer & opened there.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • PDFs, ZIP files won't launch or download when clicked.

When I click on a link to a pdf or zip file in Safari, I'm no longer able to view the pdf in my browser with the Preview plugin, nor am I able to download the pdf (or zip file.) On clicking, a new blank window launches, but that's it. Nothing downloads or loads.
I've tried reinstalling Safari, and that doesn't work. Anyone have any thoughts?
p.s. I want to view pdfs with Preview ideally, not Acrobat. Acrobat is way too sluggish.

If you have Adobe Reader installed, there has to be a plugin installed in that folder, unless you deleted it at some point. It may be called AdobePDFViewer.plugin, and it can only be in that director path that I gave you: HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins. Check to be sure it's not there.
Once you're sure it's not there and Adobe Reader was deleted, quit Safari if it's running, paste this command in Terminal, press Enter, then quit Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool False
Restart Safari and try dragging a PDF file from your Desktop or elsewhere on your Mac into an open window and it should display without any problem.

  • Zip file won't unZip!!!

    hello,
I made an archive of some files using the finders "Create Archive" function. Now I cannot get the file to unzip.
Just when the files appears to finish unzipping I get the following message.
Unable to unarchive "name of File" into HD 250.
    (Error 1 -Operation not permitted)
What can I do to unzip this file? HELP!!!
    Thanks

I use "The Unarchiver" for a couple of months now. Works better than the built in app. Maybe you give it a try:

  • Word File Won't Place Completely

I am trying to place a Word document of about 200 pp. If I do a shift click, InDesign places the first 8 pp. It shows a continuation market on the last one. If I click that and place, it copies the same pages.
    Any work around?

In my experience, an overset when placing a word file like this is usually caused by soem condition inthe file that prevents the next line of text from fitting into the width of the frame.
I've seen cases of No Break applied too liberally, preventing entire paragraphs or even entire stories from breaking, stings of text with hyphnation turned off and words separated by non-breaking spaces, and paragraph indents that are so large there is no space left in the column for the text, among other things.
Best bet is to open the story in Story editor and take a look at the first line or two after the overset marker and see what sort of styling and formatting is applied.

  • How do I open a pw protected zip file?

This question appears to be different from similar questions asked because I HAVE the password. I really don't want to download extra safe-cracker's-anonymous software to hack into it. The file just never gives me the option of entering it. I have the zip file, I double-click on it, it gives me an error message. I right-click on it but no options there either. How do I open it such that it gives me a chance to unlock it?
Appreciate the help. (and yeah, I have no idea if I'm in the right community - sorry about that if I'm in the wrong place)

The zip file format is not a nice, standardized format. You could have a weird zip file that is technically not bad, but isn't supported by the built-in software on Mac OS X. In some cases, when zip files won't open, I've had success opening them with The Unarchiver, which is available both in the App Store and outside it:
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-unarchiver/id425424353?mt=12
    http://unarchiver.c3.cx
(I don't know if there's a difference in functionality between the two... there could be, but if there is, I am not aware of it.)
It's also possible the zip file is corrupted, and won't be openable by anything.

  • Wht does safari combine multiple download into a zip file?

I downloaded a MKV file from my NAS remotely which worked fine, however when i try to combine multiple files Safari seems to automatically ZIP the files which means I cannot tell how long the download will take or how much data is left to transfer.
Anyone got any idea how to prevent Safari from putting multiple files into a zip?
    cheers

I select multiple files from an online storage device, and select download. at this point for some reason when the download begins the files are combined into a zip file. when the download completes i then try to extract the zip file it often fails to extract.
If I select any one of the selceted files individually, Safari download begins, and the completed download is not in a zip file format and the file is readable.
I hope this makes sense to someone!
    cheers

iWork (no 's') for iOS & iWork for Mac have not gone away.
iWork.com (beta) (also no 's') is going away the end of July. iWork.com (beta) is/was an online method of sharing iWork files with other users & never moved out of beta in 3+ years. It is a completely different entity than the iWork apps & is not & never has been necessary for the iWork apps to function.
A Numbers document, as well as Pages or Keynote documents, cannot be opened on a PC. You must first export them to a file that a PC can use. For Numbers that is generally Excel. In Numbers on your iPad tap the wrench & then tap Share & Print & choose Excel as the file type.
As for transfering a file from a PC to an iPad, I'm not sure as I don't use a PC.

  • Archive Utility brings up error message when trying to unarchive protected zip file

    Hey there,
I've been zipping images with password protection using different applications, some with a Lightroom Plug-In Zip-Exporter, some with a stand alone app such as "Archiver". Now when I try to unzip these images on OSX 10.6 the Archive Utility brings up an the error: "Unable to unarchive "Name of File" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.) I'm logged in with an admin account. I tried this on a macbook pro and on an imac, both 10.6, same problem. Now when I try to unzip the file using third party such as Stuffit expander or Archiver, it unzips the files without a problem.
any idea what's wrong with the OSX Archive Utility?

Nothing's wrong with it except that it doesn't support encrypted .zip files.  You'll just have to use third-party software, or a Terminal command, to unzip those.

  • Is there a way to restore photos from Drop box to my desktop iPhoto in a large batch instead of one at a time? I tried and a zip file was downloaded but won't open. Says file format not recognized.

Is there a way to restore photos from Drop box to my desktop iPhoto in a large batch instead of one at a time? I tried and a zip file was downloaded but won't open. Says file format not recognized. I see how to do it one at a time with the "download" button in Dropbox but that's so cumbersome for lots of photos.

  • Keynote (6.2) file won't open. Can I make a new Index.zip file using some of the extracted .iwa files?

Keynote (6.2) file won't open (hung and crashed during auto-OS update).  Trying to salvage everything possible.  I know about grabbing the pictures from Data folder, but is there a way to extract the good .iwa files and make a new Index.zip?
Tried extracting, capturing uncorrupted .iwa and deleting corrupted ones, but can't figure out how to re-compress to readable format for Keynote.  Seems silly that I can't ge the new .zip file to work.  There has to be some sort of manual work-around, yeah?
    Thanks.

This problem has been reported to the AppleWorks team, but I doubt that we will ever hear if there is a fix. AppleWorks 6 is now nearly 6 years old & hasn't even had an update since March, 2004.
Nothing has been found to be able to make AppleWorks 6.2.9 open the problem files. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, including the OS 8/9 component 6.2.8. If you have the retail version of AppleWorks & have Classic installed, you can "Force" AppleWorks 6 to open in Classic to open the files, save them as AW 6 files & then open them in the OS X version. You do want to make sure you don't have both the Classic & OS X versions of AppleWorks 6 running at the same time. I find it much easier to use AppleWorks 5 in Classic to open & save the files. AppleWorks 6.2.9 has no problem opening AppleWorks 5 files.

  • Stuffit expanding OS X zip files to exe?

why is stuffit expanding zip files of macintosh software to windows .exe that quicktime tries to open and does not recognise?
    any fixes?
    thanks

Are these files you are downloading? If so, I would guess you are not downloading the Mac versions of the files. Stuffit just expands files it doesn't create them so if they are .exe files that it is unzipping then check the version of the file. Almost all Mac files are either .sit or .dmg files. Very very few mac files are zipped and none are .exe files
