Stumped after PMU Reset!!!

Hello,
I was having a problem with my iMac G5 yesterday. After calling tech. support, they had me do a PMU reset which apparently fixed the problem and OSX loaded with no apparent problems. Except, when my our logins came up, our passwords did not work. Mine nor my wifes. Any suggestions? They told me to bring it to an Apple store...

Hi vallon, you might want to try the process described at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156 for "Resetting the original administrator account password"
Cheers

  • Repeated shutting-down after PMU reset

    Hello-
Very suddenly I am having problems with my 8/2005 g4 iBook. It has started shutting down while in the sleep mode, so I came here to troubleshoot and found instructions to reset the PMU. I did so, but it continues to shut down. Any suggestions before I bring it to an Apple Care site? I also notice that the power cord shows a green light even if I remove the battery during this time (I tried removing the battery & turning on before I tried resetting the PMU). Otherwise, the computer seems to be fine, albeit a little slower than it was a year ago.
    Thank you much!

That's an odd set of symptoms; and I wonder if the cause was something
else before the PMU reset sequence. You did the PMU with computer off,
as per AppleSupport document #14449 instructions - and it shuts down.
Not sure if something like the PRAM/NVRAM (one or both) could be
corrupted. The resets for these require different procedures. A variety
of things could be the cause of a sudden shutdown, to include some
hardware items in addition to the non-volitile ram, and parameter random
access memory. A sudden shutdown in some different models involved
other factors not reported alot in the iBookG4. The Intel® MacBook uses
a different technology so its sudden shutdown on a few models was CPU
heat buildup in some known examples; when proven to not be lesser causes.
Sudden shutdown symptoms can mimic more common causes of system
failure (bad RAM, improperly seated RAM, improperly seated hard drive,
bad software install, bad battery, bad AC adapter, corrupted PRAM,
corrupted NVRAM) which ALL must be ruled out. Since you have Apple
Care, any hardware component failures would be covered. Did you try
running the Apple Hardware Test from the boot/install DVD? It may not
catch this kind of problem, but you could tell the technician you ran it.
I have not run mine, but hear you boot from the install disc #1 and hold
the Opt key down and then after awhile you'd get a choice of startup items.
    Did you upgrade the RAM lately? Some poorer RAM may cause issues;
but usually kernel panic activity is seen with bad RAM in the user slot.
If the strange behavor occurred after a step update from 10.4.7 to 4.8,
    some users would try the Combo large update file installed over it all;
being sure to repair disk permissions before & after all software updates.
But the symptoms don't necessarily point that way.
You should try to archive your personal stuff on to some media outside
of the computer's hard drive; in case some tech has to wipe the drive or
do something else to the machine while it is away for repairs. If you have
an external FireWire enclosed drive, you may try making a clone of it all.
One level of troubleshooting may include using Disk Utility's tools on the
boot installer disc and totally wiping/zeroing data/reformatting the HDD.
    This is where a bootable clone of your whole hard drive would be handy;
to make a full restoration back to the computer's drive afterward.
Hopefully someone with less drastic (and less wordy) ideas will offer them!

  • "No AirPort Card Installed" Message after PMU reset

My battery memory time was getting shorter and shorter, even after a full re-charge (less than 50 minutes). Apple Care suggested that I do a PMU reset and then recalibrate the battery. After I did that my AirPort icon has disappeared, and when I try to use Airport Setup Assistant, I get a message that says "No AirPort Card installed."
Yikes - any thoughts about how to get my AirPort working again?

You might want to post in the Powerbook G4 section, you might get more help there. Do you have built in airport or a card? If you have a card try pulling it out and re-seating it.

  • Random Crashing after PMU resets

    Background Info:
Yesterday my Powerbook crashed. The mouse went out first, and then it froze and the monitor wouldn't show up. [That same day, my brother tried downloading files on his corrupted Nano and I'm suspicious that the courrupted nano - which has crashed twice already - did something to my computer]. So I tried a PMU reset and it worked for a little bit, then it said I needed to restart my computer about an hour later. I wasn't doing anything except resizing a finder window. Then I reset it again and it said I had to reset a few seconds after the computer booted up. I did another PMU reset and the same thing happened.
I'm guessing that I need to repair disk permissions by reading other threads on this forum. If so, how do you do that? (can't seem to find any specific instructions) and is there anything else I should do after I do that?
    Thanks,
    Stacy
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.0.x)   can't tell exact OS X number

Tests such as those are inconclusive unless they say there is a problem.
Mac OS X usually does not have fragmentation problems as it does a lot of its own small file defragmentation. If your hard disk is very full, or you are running a lot of files in swap space, then naturally things will slow down because it it will be harder to access files on the machine.
I think what happened is that your recovery might have attempted to restore cache files for specific applications which are now quitting and bad preferences and that the backup prior to the erase copied over corrupted files as well. If your backup prior to the erase was a full fledged clone, you can sometimes use the Migration Assistant to import the clone if it was on a Firewire hard drive:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
That can often get rid of a lot of the corruption.
Disk Warrior 3.0.3 will also repair the directory much better than Norton will. But I would only run it on a system that is backed up.
Just how full is your hard disk?

  • Powerbook 5,7 boots only after pmu reset, does not wake up from sleep

    Hello,
my PB 5,7 wont boot normally. I got to reset the pmu every time i try to power on, even when i put it into sleep it will not wake up - only after the pmu reset.
What i tryed until now is:
reset pram, disconnect: HD, optical drive, PC Card, Soudboard, Airport, right USB board, left USB Flex cable, fans – no other reaction.
I changed: Topcase with keyboard, DC-IN board, power cables, batterie cable, RAM and right USB board with the pram batterie - every time it will only start with the pmu reset.
I installed a new tiger system and also a new leopard from orig. DVDs and updated both via Airport with the combo updates.
Now i dont have any further idea. Every help would be appreciated! Did i have overseen a crucial thing? Thank you all!
    Must I replace the Logicboard?
    Best regards
    siebo

    Hallo,
yes I run the AHT. There came no error message. For the AHT my Powerbooks seems totaly ok. And I also reset my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM without any results.
But thank you for your suggestions!
    regards

  • Wallstreet (M4753) Won't Power-up!! (After PMU Reset)

Problem: The Wallstreet "died" (Screen slowly faded then power shut down) while I was trying to install a new IDE hard-drive. I have removed the hard-drive totally so I can focus on re-booting from DVD Drive. To restart I have tried:
    1) The 4 key PMU reset command -- causes Wallstreet fan to run, LED blink, and then all stops.
    THEN:
    2) Holding the Power button down while holding "C," but doesn't produce any activity of drive, Processor, fan anything!
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Sumer,
If you do not have a startup chime, the powerbook's Start Manager is not passing its startup hardware test. Since the screen slowly faded and the powerbook shut down, I can only assume you have had a hardware failure.
This is what Apple recommends for a no-start (battery and power adapter can be eliminated as culprits):
Disconnect internal keyboard and try powering up unit. If unit powers up, replace keyboard.<<</div>
I would say this has zero possibility of being the failure. Performing a successful power manager reset usually eliminates the keyboard.
Verify that microprocessor card is firmly seated in connector.<<</div>
    Replace sound card.<<</div>
This is the DC/sound card which has the power adapter port. Even if this fails, the battery should still power up the 'book. Also, if the battery charges, this card is probably OK.
    Replace power supply card.<<</div>
    Replace PMU card.<< </div>
    Replace I/O logic board.<<</div>
    Replace microprocessor card.<<</div>
I have no idea how the user tests for a failure in the last four components. If you really like your Wallstreet, you might spend $60-100 to have someone diagnose it, then buy/replace the parts yourself.

  • After PMU Reset, my Intel Core Duo widget doesent work any more.. normal?

alldough the Istat Nano temp widget does.. are they the same??
    thanx..!

    Hi,
I had a similar issue... Upgraded Mem to 2G... Everything worked fine for 3 weeks but sometimes I'd crash with the Grey Screen Of Death. Reboot and all's well for a few days... My Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 is a PVR so it is basically on all the time.
    so I though Memory Issue...
I ran Hardware Diags and was getting random Memory faulures.each time I ran the test... so I cracked open the mini and ran individual tests to see which SODIMM was the problem... 1 only then the Other only, both in then swapped around etc... I found that each SODIMM worked fine by itself and passed HDiag... then in dual combo It failed a Memtest... but when swapping them around... I could not boot up. Power LED would blink and nothing would happen. Swap memory around and boot fine but HDiag fails memory test...
Basically my 3 week Old RAM was Bad so I took it back and got Replacement... I ran all the HDiags test again on the New Memory... all OK now.
You might have some dodgy RAM

  • ICalHelper re-sending ALL e-mail alarms in ALL calendars since PMU reset

    Dear iCal List,
For various reasons, I reset the PMU on my PowerBook G4 today. (I had recently removed some preferences as well, in the hopes of curing an unrelated problem.) When I restarted the Mac and logged in, iCal proceeded to re-send EVERY e-mail alarm I had ever set up to today. (The PMU reset temporarily sets the clock to Dec, 1969, which I think is the problem... iCal must see this and assume that I haven't used the computer for the last 39 years....) This amounted to several hundred e-mails being generated and sent. I was able to disconnect from my LAN and eventually delete all the outbox e-mails, but this behavior of iCal and iCalHelper is exceptionally annoying.
Does anyone know (1) exactly what triggers this behavior (ie: Resetting PRAM, SMU/PMU, removing preferences, other), (2) how to stop iCalHelper from sending once it has started this (Yes, I know how to kill the process in Terminal, but once I restart iCalHelper, I'm afraid it will simply pick up where it left off.), and (3) whom to contact at Apple to ask them to rectify this annoying behavior? There isn't an obvious way to restrict iCalHelper's e-mail behavior to, say, only sending alarms for a maximum of 10 previous days. I cannot imagine a circumstance where you would want the program to look through its entire database for unsent alarms older than a certain time frame. Apple usually doesn't engage in sloppy programming. However, this unrestricted iterative loop is uncharacteristic and should be fixed. Obj-C 2.0 makes looping easy, but that shouldn't mean it's done without careful consideration and user-selected limits.
    Thanks.
    -Dan

I am still trying to figure out this problem as well. My MacBook Pro's logic board was replaced, and now I get empty iCal notifications every so often, and while these empty notifications are shown, iCal Helper (the process) goes to 99% of the CPU, and starts gobbling up all the free RAM on my computer. I keep having to force-quit it, as it pops back up again after a while.
I'm looking for an answer to this as well. Is there any way to reset iCal's notification system?

  • Is it time for PMU reset?

    Hello all,
Recently and especially after the Vista installation (got 25GB for Windows Partition), my MBP has demonstrated some kinds of weird behaviors. For example, it did not wake up after the screen-saver (the screen turned completely blank) and I had to close the lid, wait for a while, open the lid to get it to work. Now, it escalated one step further that it refused to shut-down (spinning wheel forever) and I had to press-and-hold the power button. Also, the Optical drive which used to work perfectly before, has also refused the same media I put into. I used to have Imation blank DVD/CD to record my data but now, it takes quite a minutes to recognize and to read/write from those.
At the end, I don't have any feeling that this machine is mine (or at least, the machine I used to have)... strange things keep coming up all the time...
    Steps already taken:
    1. Using original DVD to do Hardware check: All OK
    2. Using original DVD to repair Disk and Permission: Done
    3. Using DiskWarrior (v.4) to re-build my hard drive: Done
    4. Reset PRAM: Done
After all the above steps, I need someone to tell me that it's high time for a PMU reset, don't you think so?
Thanks a lot for any instruction and advices
    James

Same here .. Personally, I won't let my MBP HDD get more than 3/4 full.
I find at a little over 1/2 full that there are items I could delete (like GarageBand, et al) and/or files that I could archive to my external drive or CD/DVD-ROM.
By the way, I have Windows XP MCE installed now with parallels. Now, THAT's one part of my HDD I could reclaim at any time .. with NO regrets .. LOL...

  • PB won't start more than once without PMU Reset

My son just got a hand-me-down G4 1.5Ghz 15" PowerBook at work. When he got it the battery would not hold a charge for more than about 5 minutes. We checked the serial number and it was part of the PowerBook battery recall so we requested a battery exchange from, Apple. The new battery arrived today and when he put it in, the PowerBook would not start up even on AC.
He reset the PMU and it seemed to be OK but when the computer went to sleep he could not wake it up. He uplugged it and took out the battery but it will not restart. Also, the charge indicator on the AC adapter turned green after about 15 minutes but the battery indicator in the menu bar still says 0%. He pushed the test button on the bottom of the battery but no lights come on so the battery can't be charged. Even putting the old battery back into the PB won't let it restart more than once without resetting the PMU.
While the old battery did not hold a charge at least the machine could be used and restarted without a PMU reset. Now it won't even do that.
Anyone see this behavior on another machine? Any suggestions on what is wrong or how to fix it?
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    David

It appears that deleting the com.apple.Powermanagement.plist file has resolved the restart problem. In fact. it looks like the old battery may now be charging properly. I still can't get the machine to start using the replacement battery.

  • PMU Reset

I have an iBook that won't start after it has been shut down for a few hours (overnight, for instance). If it is shut down and started up right away it works. To restart it, I go through the PMU reset procedure (battery out, AC cord out, press small button by earphone jack) and then the computer will restart.
The battery on this iBook is about dead but I wonder if that's the problem. I have the AC plugged in and also have switched the bad battery for a good one from another iBook and the problem remains.
Any ideas what might be going wrong?
    Marc

It sounds like a problem with the PMU (Power Management Unit).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
The Power Manager is part of the logic board, so there is no fixing it short of replacing the logic board.
I would recommend that you keep a current backup and be prepared for the day when the iBook finally will not start up at all. It would be wise to start saving up for a new computer. (Those new MacBooks look pretty nice.)

  • Bluetooth not available, PMU reset didn't fix it

Well, what can i say more? Bluetooth started disappearing a few months ago, but it used to come back to life after a reboot, with or without a PRAM or PMU reset, but now it's gone...

That may be it. I need to take it to apple. The Mac was fine but just this morning my power went out and when the power came back on and I tried to turn my Mac on the same thing happened. It just wouldn't turn on. I'm really really hoping leaving it unplugged for some time it will come back on again like last time. I don't see why it wouldn't but you never know.

  • IBook won't start up - power button does nothing, PMU reset not helpful

Hi all - I was using my iBook earlier this morning and it just turned itself off without any warning. It was running off the battery, but had plenty of charge, and there was no 'low power' warning, so it wasn't that.
I can't get it to turn on now. Pressing the power button does nothing - no whirring, beeping, chiming or anything else. I tried resetting the PMU to no effect. No lights appear on the caps lock button. I haven't tried using the Mac OSX cd, but I'm a little afraid I won't get it back out of the slot-load drive with the way the computer is behaving.
I have it plugged in now and it seems to be charging the battery, so I don't think it's related to either power or battery issues. In fact, it seems the power and battery are the only things working! Absolutely nothing else happens. Unresponsive.
My warranty ran out in September (November now, unfortunately) so if it needs servicing I suppose it will be out of my own pocket.
    Can anyone help?
    Mark
    iBook G4 Dual usb 14"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ok - good news. I've got the problem fixed.
After a call to Apple Support (called the Canadian one), and a $59 charge (worth it, in my opinion, since my warranty is expired) the gentleman on the line asked me to do a PMU reset with the SHIFT + CTRL + Option + Power combination. That's what I had tried before and it didn't work. Didn't work this time either.
Next, he had me remove the battery, unplug the computer from the adapter, and hold the power button down for 5 seconds. I put the battery back in, plugged it back in, and turned it on.
Voila. Works like a charm. Apparently, there are two ways to do a PMU reset.
Thanks everyone for looking at my thread, and thanks arnie for the responses.

  • IBook G4 won't turn on, tried PMU reset multiple ways, what else can I do?

I'm writing about a dual USB iBook G4 without physical reset button that after a screen freeze from which I had to shut down by holding down the power button now refuses to turn on at all. I have tried resetting the PMU by pressing shift-control-option-power waiting five seconds and then pressing power again as described in the Apple article, but without success. I've done this in a variety of ways: with the battery in and out and with the A/C cord connected and disconnected. No luck. The battery is charged, so the A/C connection is working. Are there any tricks I am missing, or do I need to bring this computer to a repair shop at this point?
    Anthony

After "resting" for about two hours with the battery out and the A/C unplugged I tried the PMU reset one more, then plugged in the power cord and, voila! it turned on. Now I can teach my classes again. I still don't know what the trouble was or what the solution was, but maybe sitting idle for a while was what the computer needed.
