Stumped! Migration Assistant won't work - need to setup new mac asap!

OK, I've been trying to transfer files from my iMac to my Macbook for three days - no luck.
I did a wipe and install on the macbook first. But then Migration Assistant wouldn't work b/c it said the machine i was transferring do had an older OS than the iMac. SO, I reinstalled Leopard on the iMac - but now All my files are in the "Previous Systems" Folder - so when I try to use Migration Assistant - it calculates my transfer files at 0 KB.
Same thing happens when I try it from my latest Time Machine Back up.
I've tried migration assistant with firewire, ethernet and Time Machine. etc, but no luck.
Now, I'm just copying all my files over - but I NEED to have all my mail msgs and applications transferred!
Any suggestions I feel like I've tried everything - I've read many many articles here but I'm getting frustrated and tired.
thanks in advance!

What version of OSX is that backup?
And what version is on your MacBook?
It sounds like the iMac and/or backups are on Snow Leopard, and the MacBook is on Leopard. If so, you can't transfer from a newer "major" version of OSX to an older one (but you can transfer from, say, 10.6.6 to 10.6.4, although some Apple apps may not be happy with older versions of their data files).
If the backups are Snow Leopard, update the MacBook to Snow Leopard and do the transfer from the backups, either via +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant.+ See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).
The other article is for transferring from a PPC Mac to Leopard or early versions of Snow Leopard.

  • When Migration Assistant won't work, what should be done?

I had to zero a hard drive, fortunately all of my data was accessible, and I backed it up on another drive. Obviously did a fresh 10.4 install, and all of the updates so the computer is now up to date.
How can I migrate everything to my new system folder, libraries, etc. I already did the Apps manually. The problem is that I used Desinstaller and accidentally removed panther system components that were still relevant to 10.4.6 (strangely enough).
Now I'd like to get my prefs, app support, and everything else to my new drive so my Applications will function properly (and registered again). Migration Assistant will not work because, while it is on another drive, it only sees my actual system folder that I use as a backup OS on the other drive, not the folder with my old system files that I backed up myself there.
So any programs or applescripts to set this up, so that prefs go into their new spots in the proper folder hierarchy?

if u own or buy a usb hard drive on ur pc find ur itunes folder that hold all ur app music and pictures etc
copy it on to the drive then copy it to ur mac
then open itunes up and c if it has found u data if it has hook ur ipod up
if its not found it u need to copy  all data from the folder to the tab in itunes

  • My migration assistant won't work! Please Help.

    Hi Everyone
I am having problems with the migration assistant. I am trying to migrate my files from my mac book pro over to my mac book air but it doesn't work. It just keeps saying 'looking for other computers'... Please can someone help?

    Here is the guide:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
You haven't said if you are migrating to Mavericks.  If you are, make sure you follow the link to the Mavericks assistant in the above article.
There are troubleshooting sections near the bottom.

  • Migration assistant won't work

    Hello,
Hopefully someone can tell me what I am doing wrong? I have a macbook 13" running os 10.5.8 and a macbook pro 13" running os 10.6.8
The hard disc on the macbook pro crashed so it was replaced and reinstalled. Now I wanted to use migration assistant to copy all my user data, photos, itunes library etc.... from the old macbook. I launch migration assistant on both laptops, get to the point where new laptop gives me a 6 digit code for the old laptop, enter the code, and then on both computers migration assistant just says "searching for other computers" and nothing else happens.....
I am sure this worked fine when I first got the macbook pro.... Or is there a significant difference between transfering data using the setup assistant versus migration assistant?
Pretty please help cause I'm loosing the plot lol
    Eve-Line
PS for some reason the power cable on the macbook pro isn't connecting anymore so that's going back to the shop (lousy repair service yes). Does that influence migration assistant?

Ok problem solved itself.... still don't know why though. I upgraded to ox 10.7 (purchased before hard disk crash, so just reinstalled it) and now migration assistant works.... Thanks however for reading and trying to answer my question BDAqua

  • Migration assistant won't work via thunderbolt in Mavericks

I've followed exactly the instructions for doing a migration assistant data transfer via thunderbolt, per this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872?viewlocale=en_US
My target computer will not see my source computer via thunderbolt. If I turn on wifi, it will see it, but it says it will take 50+ hours to transfer. I have a thunderbolt cable and two thunderbolt equipped macs running Mavericks (mid 2011 iMac --> late 2013 MBP Retina).
Anyone have any thoughts on a solution?

Go to System Preferences on the Old Mac, locate Start Up Disk in 4th Row of Icons, Select Start Computer in Target Disk Mode.
    On New Mac /Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant
Once in Migration Assistant Select From Another Mac, Startup Disk, Time Machine Backup, or Disk
Then on next Screen Choose from a Disk
To Migrate Old Photos, Music, and Documents select and check Users and choose Specific User
Choose Applications to Migrate Applications, other data and settings as well
If you encounter the Problem, where the username of the old folder is the same as the username of the home folder on the New Mac, Look at PH14081 and complete steps 6-15 to merge old folder with new folder.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14081
    6. Change Name of old folder to accountname1
    7. Migrate
    8. After Migration Go to New Admin User, Create a Test User, Log out of new Admin and into Test User
    9. When in Test User Delete New Admin User and Home Folder, Do not do this Securely as it will take some time to complete
    10. Once New admin and folder are deleted go into Finder select Username1 Folder, Control Click or Two Finger Click for Trackpads > Select Get Info, Change accountname1 to accountname
    11. Go back into System Preferences> Create New User with "accountname" as new accountname, set Admin Password>Select Create New User
    12. Dialogue Box will Appear A folder already exists with this Username>select use Existing Folder
    13. Log out of Test User into Username>System Prefrences>Delete Test User

  • Migration Assistant won't see external hard drive

I have just done a clean install of Leopard onto my MacBook Pro, previously running Tiger. Now, I want to migrate my old user and programs from a backed up volume on an external firewire hard drive. The problem is that Migration Assistant won't recognize my external hard drive.
I have no other problem mounting or reading the external hard drive from leopard.
Could the problem be that the external drive has the Apple partition map instead of GUID as reported here? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1329665
Any suggestion, solutions or work arounds are gratefully appreciated.

That isn't a valid link to your picture (it's a link to the file on your computer). You would need to post it to a serve (and remove the spaces in the name) and post that link here.
However it would appear that your short name is 'dalechristiansen' so presumably you originally created a user with that short name and your full name as.. the full name (unless it was just 'Dale'. Whatever you did before when you created your account is what you should do now. Then you can copy the equivalent folder's contents. (You might have problems replacing some of the root level folders, in which case you shuld copy their contents into the equivalent folders).

  • Boot Camp Assistant won't work - keeps asking me to use Software Update.

I am trying to use Boot Camp to install Windows but my Boot Camp Assistant won't work - it keeps asking me to use Software Update. So, even though I know everything is up to date, I start Software Update and it confirms that indeed everything is up to date. I try Boot Camp Assistant again, but the same message appears. I search every possible Boot Camp upgrade to download from Apple but they are all .exe files and need Windows to run, so those don't seem to be what I need. So I am caught in a circle of nothing working. Figures - the ONE weekend I need to install Windows and use a Windows-based program!!! And of course Apple support is closed over the weekend - another great asset to spending thousands of dollars on a product. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I too am having a similar problem. I am trying to install Windows in a newly created Boot Camp partition. I have Windows 7 but Boot Camp Assistant only mentions XP and Vista. I put in my installation disk of Windows 7 but it refuses to install it. My OS is fully up to date.

  • HTC DNA Backup Assistant won't work since 1/1/13

HELP!  No matter what we've done - hard reset and GOT A BRAND NEW HTC DNA - still backup assistant won't work since 1/1/13.  This is NOT anything to do with Facebook.
This all started with that same 1/1/13 error that so many of you got.  The tech also had me clear the contact storage.  That worked for the error.  But since then I don't have contacts.  I have talked to at least 7 Verizon techs, one HTC tech, then spent 2.5 hours in the Verizon store today.  Ended up with a brand new HTC DNA (mine was only one week old) for free.. and we immediately tried to sync to Backup ASsistant and it still won't work on the new phone.  I have 521 contacts stored online in My Verizon Backup Assistant and they will not, no matter what we try, sync to my phone.  So frustrated.  Anyone else experiencing this?

After all my hell- after so many calls and trips to Verizon...as well as getting a new phone..... guess what FINALLY worked:
    http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-faqs/10144-migrating-contacts-phone-backup-assistant-google-contacts.html
Now I finally see ALL my contacts in "people" when I select my phone icon and people.  But now I'm trying to test it out by composing a new text message and all these people aren't showing up there.  Does it just take a lot of time!?!?  Since I did import 524 contacts from BUA to Google?... will it just take time for these contacts to be available for me to text!?!?  HELP.. (again).

  • Migration Assistant Won't Recognize Time Machine Back Up

My old white macbook just died. I bought a new macbook air to replace it. I am trying to use the time machine back up in migration assistant but it won't work. Since the Air doesn't have firewire I am connecting the external drive to my AirPort Extreme. It recognizes the drive but when I click to use it I get a connection error message. I tried hooking up the drive by USB but it won't mount at all. What am I doing wrong? I don't really want to do a full Time Machine restore because the Air has iLife '11 and the macbook only had iLife '10 and I don't want to have to pay for it again.

First of all, Migration Assistant is smart enough to keep the newer version of iLife.
Second, your MacBook Air came with a restore drive (a little flash drive) that has iLife on it. You don't have to purchase it again.

  • HT204350 Migration Assistant is NOT working

Migration Assistant is NOT working - Have tried from from a hard disk and using the Thunderbolt cable.  Keeps Looking for Source.
Any ideas?  I really want to more on to my new Mac.

That the Migration Assistant doesn't work is a KNOWN ISSUE.  Last week I got a new iMac and the old and new couldn't find one another.  I called tech support 3 times and spent I don't know how long on the phone.  They finally suggested I take them both to an Apple store, which I did today.  The Genius knew all about it - said it's a known issue.  To "resolve" it he started the old iMac in "disk mode" and then the new one could see it, but that wasn't an adequate fix: After spending over an hour moving the files, they wouldn't have been in their proper folders.  I would have had to manually file 6 years worth of pics and files!  NFW - I returned the new computer and will make do with my old one until Apple gets this right.

  • Migration Assistant from PowerBook 10.3.9 to new MacBook Pro?

A friend has just bought a new MacBook Pro. His previous Mac is a PowerBook (G4 1.0 GHz 15" FW800 - Aluminium) still running Panther 10.3.9.
He's asked me to help him migrate his files, settings, apps etc. to the new Mac. I had thought to use Migration Assistant/Setup Assistant to do this, but the manual for the MacBook Pro says:
+"Before migrating, use Software Update on your other Mac. The other Mac should have one of these versions of Mac OS X software—either Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X v10.5.6 (or later)."+
Does this mean you can't migrate from a Panther Mac to Snow Leopard using Migration Assistant?
    TIA,
    Chris Adams.

You use Migration Assistant from the new machine. The old machine needs to be started into Target Disk Mode. Both machines need to be first connected via Firewire cable. See the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.
