Stumper! Sawtooth shuts down on startup - only when HD is attached.
I've been reading this forum for answers, and no one seems to have this particular problem. Care for a real stumper? Put on your genius hats, ladies and gentlemen!
I have been upgrading a G4 Sawtooth, 450MHz. I replaced the DVD-R with a new one and installed a Newertech 1.2GHz upgrade. So far so good.
Then I replaced the HD with a 320 Gb Seagate drive. Aha, the clever ones among you will say, the G4 can only see 128 Gb of that. Yes, and so I installed Leopard 10.5.8 on the drive using ANOTHER COMPUTER and then also installed InTech's Speed Tools (http://www.intechusa.com/). When I went to plug the drive in the G4, everything worked just fine. For a while. Now I get the blinking question mark.
OK, so I figure I was courting disaster with the Speed Tools. Something has gone wrong and the G4 cannot see all 320Gb of te startup drive, some files are not loading, and it's unable to start up.
So I bought an 80Gb drive and plugged it in. Installed Leopard fresh from the DVD right on the new 80Gb drive, right with the G4. The G4 started up on the Leopard DVD just fine! It ran for about an hour to install the OS, and then it went to restart up on the 80Gb drive. And promptly shut down!
Now whenever I try to start up on that drive it shuts down immediately!
2. Zapped PRAM, replaced battery, reset PMU, unplugged it for several days.
3. Plugged the 80Gb into the ATA-33 DVD/Zip drive connector. No luck, same shutdown.
4. Adjusted the jumpers, neither "Cable Select" nor "Master" seems to have any effect.
5. The G4 starts up with NO DRIVE plugged in at all, and will stay on as long as I keep it on.
I've ruled out power supply (the G4 runs fine booting off the Leopard DVD).
I've ruled out the disc (fresh from the wrapper, and apparently it will work long enough to install Leopard on it).
I've ruled out the ATA bus is bad (it works fine to install Leopard on the 80Gb, so something must be happening).
My next step is to put Leopard on an external and try starting up on a USB drive. My guess is that it's going to start up fine, but we shall see. Any advice? Oh, please say yes, and let me know it is a dumb thing I have forgotten to do...

Heck, I've driven everyone away.
So I installed 10.4, that worked. Installed the 10.4.8 combo update, directly from Apple, in an attempt to get it back up to 10.4.11. Installed fine, but when it went to restart, it hung on the grey Apple with clock screen - for about 30 minutes and eventually I shut it down.
Weird, this is what happened last time. OK on 10.4, tried to update to 10.5 and it locks up, only slightly differently this time.
Then I remembered. This has a Newertech upgrade, and I reset PRAM and everything else but never reflashed the firmware. Maybe this is what is wrong? Popped the CD in, flashed the firmware, etc.
Now it won't even come on!
Light on the power button goes off, discs are spinning, fans are turning, but nothing is happening! Cannot reset PRAM, cannot boot off a CD, nothing.
Any advice? I know I should have quit while I was ahead!

HELP!! my computer shuts down at random ONLY when power supply is attached
I still have the factory power supply. My problem just happens when ever it feels like it. I could be watching something on Quicktime or have Adium running. I have had it happen to me regardless if it was being used a little or a lot. But It ONLY happens when my power supply is attached. If I plug in my power supply to charge my computer it will shut off. I have read some other posts pointing to the problem being the logic board and that a few of the iBook G4's are subject. If this is a common problem with this computer model I think Apple should recall them and fix the problem. Any insight will be great.
Alright everyone it has been a week since I replaced my DC board and no problems. But we all know how Murphy's law works BUT I'm calling this one fixed. Thanks for your suggestions and help

After having shut down after installing updates, when I restarted and tried to open a word doc, it started opening ALL the word docs and the only way I could stop it was by"force quit" . This is REALLY annoying!!
May be it is the Resume feature.
System Preference > General > Number of recent items
Uncheck the box next to "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps".

I need to revert my timeline back to where it was before it was saved. I made a compound clip and then trimmed it and exported it and then shut down fcp. So, when I opened it back up there was only the compound clip. Can someone help me and tell me how to revert back it back to the last time before it was saved? HELP??
Select the compound clip and do Clip->Break Apart Clip Items (or Cmd-Shift-G).

MacBook Shuts down during startup
My MacBook started acting slow the other day and then today when I started it up, it was in a constant lock up with a spinning pin wheel. No force quit commands or anything would work. So, I restarted it and now after the Grey screen with the Apple logo, the MacBook shuts down. The only thing I can get running is by holding C with the Leopard disc in there.
I tried to run Disk Utility from there but everything failed. I'm assuming I need a new hard drive? Is there anyway to save data from within the Leopard disc bootup? Maybe over a network?

I am having this very same issue. It shuts down during startup. I can boot into Windows, and using the Leopard startup disc, Disk Utility could not work any magic. I do not have a second Mac or access to one for any backup purposes. I have no idea what else to try, does anyone know something besides backing up through firewire, on how I can either save my computer's data or resurrect the drive? Thank you for your help. -
Mac Shuts Down on Startup... Gray Scrren
Good Day All- We have an Imac(10.5.x) that shut down and now only intermittently will start up. It goes to a blank gray screen and sits there or sometimes restarts itself several times in a row. One of maybe 50 tries it will start. Have zapped pram and when we could get it running we ran a disk check and permissions repair. It ran for about 3 weeks problem free and is now back to the gray screen. Cannot get it to boot off CD/DVD to try a clean install of OS. We're desperate.
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

my macbook pro will not boot. It gets the grey screen with the apple until the bar is half way across and then shuts down. The only screen I can get to is in safe mode and I don't know what to do with that

My Mac Book Pro started having issues. I tried to relaod the operating system and it worked for a moment. When I tried to do a time machine back up it failed.

did you try to do a Time Machine backup from your MacBook Pro, or a Time Machine restoration to it?
Are you trying to reload your current version of OS X (10.7.4, to judge from your signature), or are you trying to reload the version of Mac OS X that came on the grey installation DVDs that originally came with your MacBook Pro? -
Mac Mini shuts down during startup after update
I've got a Late 2009 Mac Mini running Snow Leopard Server. Occasionally, it takes me awhile to restart after updates, so this could be due to the most recent update or possibly the combination of the last two...
I went into my office, saw that there was a Safari update and decided to let it do its thing. When I came back 30 minutes later, my machine was off. I turned my machine back on, got the gray Apple screen with the spinning cog and the progress indicator for the update. A little over 10% through, the progress indicator reset. No biggie, I figured. Second time it got to the same point, it just shut down. Nada. When I restart, it does the same thing.
I've tried resetting PRAM.
I've tried resetting SMC.
I've tried booting in safe mode, but that isn't working at all – just does the same thing as when I (fail to) boot normally.
Everything but one of my screens and my keyboard is disconnected. ****, I even tried booting without either one connected (I just waited to see if it would turn off), and it failed.
Can't think of or find anything else.
Anyone?Humm.. you'll need to startup from your System Install Disc to test, repair or restore from Time Machine.
Some options for Starting up from your Install Disc include:
1. in an External Optical DVD Drive.
2. from another iMac in Target Disk Mode.
3. from a copy on a Thumb Drive or External HD.
It's to bad that you are using Time Machine on the second HD instead of a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner - Home or SuperDuper! that you could boot from for testing, repairing and/or restoring.
If none of the above helps?
There is one good thing about a Mac Mini, it is much easier to tote into the local Apple Store or AASP than an iMac. see > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ -
Studio 17" Monitor Shuts Down at startup
I have recently been having problems with my Stuido 17 monitor plugged into my PowerBook G4. Every time I plug in my monitor to the powerbook it goes through the motions of starting up then all of the sudden it shuts down the startup process in mid stream.
After I startup the computer and then plug in the external monitor into it it will engage but up appears the shut down window on the Studio 17 and before I can click "Cancel" it shuts down my entire system.
Help! It's driving me crazy!! Any ideas on what the problem is and how to get it working again! Your thoughts and suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!!Mark,
Welcome to the posts ( I presume). It sounds like the error message is coming up either way. When you say " After I startup the computer and then plug in the external monitor into it it will engage but up appears the shut down window on the Studio 17 , are you implying that the laptop screen works fine until you plug in the external 17"?
If that is the case, double check your monitor settings, then reset your vram. It may be hardware related but check software first.

I use my PowerPC Quicksilver G4 (2.1), 867 MHz, 1.5 GB standart video card system 10.4.11 to scan (lack of driver for my Mac Pro 10.6.8)
The G4 has been running flawless, now I get kernel panics every time (shut down your computer). When it stays on I get blotched video
left-over spots, tearig and then shut down your computer...
I did all recommended software tests Diskutility, rebuild with DiskWarrior and Apples full Hardware test. Everything comes out fine!

Yes I ran short and the Extended Test. All pass. One of the first things I did is Safe Boot several times I also repaired permissions. Safe boot takes no longer than before the crashes and as long as I stay in safe boot mode it won't crash. What does that mean?I also ran MacJanitor and removed the SCCUZI card Apple put in when I bought the G4 as well as an M-Audio Delta 66 card which I do not use (both) anymore. I also started up on an external firewire drive 10.4.6. It also (crashes) does the same thing.
I was hoping somebody understands the crash report I enclosed? Isn't that suppose to say what went wrong?

I was editing photos in my iphotos and it froze on me. So I shut down my computer and when I restarted I now can not access them. It says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. What can I do to fix this?
What you're describing is the Finder window for your external hard drive. When you're in iPhoto and try to edit a photo what happens?
Are you saying that the photos for your iPhoto library are located on the external HD while your library is in the Pictures folder on the boot drive? That would indicate a referenced library. You can check to see if you're running a referenced library by checking the Advanced Preference pane in iPhoto:

So based one the Advanced preference pane in iPhoto what type of library are you running. Where is the library itself located? It should look like this:
By default it should be located in your Users/Home/Pictures folder. However, it could be run on an external HD. -
home sharing shuts down after 5 min when watching a movie. any solutions. already downloaded itunes from apple. did not work.
Make sure your computer is not set to fall asleep. Also check www.istumbler.net (netstumbler for windows) for interference on the network

When I view my ipohotos on my mac air that have been uploaded from my iphone, sometimes my computer just shuts down. It is when I have the iphoto open. I'm not sure which version this is...I bought the computer about four months ago.

I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. Usually problems of rapid battery drain can be traced to bad apps (FaceBook is the worst offender) or corrupt data being synced from iCloud or other sources (gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, etc).
The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.
