Stupid beginner animation question

So I have a background map, and I want to draw a ship on top of it. Problem is, when I load in my jpg and stick it on top of the background, the jpg is a square. It makes sense... the jpg doesn't know that I only want my what isn't black. But is there a way I can easily get rid of the unwanted portion of the image?

Make it a gif with a transparent background.

Beginner font questions

These are some beginner font questions if someone has the time/patience.
I've never paid much attention to fonts over the years, never installed
any other than those that might have come with applications. Early on,
15 years ago or so, I settled on Palatino and I've stayed with it for
most docs (Word 5.1a and now Word vX) and often for other apps (Safari,
Now).
I just upgraded to Tiger (10.4.4) and I use Word vX.
Questions:
1. I gather from looking at Font Book that when I'm using Palatino in
Tiger that OS X is getting it from my OS 9 System folder for Classic.
It does not look like Palatino is in any other locations including MS
Office vX. Does that make sense?
2. I always thought that Palatino was a very basic, always available
font. Not so?
3. If I decide to stop using Classic, and I'm close to that time, can I
transfer those fonts to OS X? If so, to which location is best.
4. And are the same fonts used for printing and screen? In other words
back in pre OS X days I thought some fonts came in screen versions and
print versions but my memory is hazy on that. Not only that.

Yes, you can just put it in Users/username/Library/Fonts (or Library/Fonts for all users).

Beginner Flash question: How do I create a "step" style animation?

How do I create a "step" style animation? For certain movements, I don't want a smooth transition. I want position A to jump to position B immediately at the appropriate marker in the Timeline, not a gradual movement from point A to point B. Thanks in advance!

just create keyframes with your displayobject positioned and do not using tweening between the keyframes. or use actionscript and a timer to change the object's position.

Stupid Beginner Question

Just got an Imac. Have been a PC user for life and a guitar recording enthusiast.
Now, is recording on garageband this easy?
1. Plug my guitar into my PODxt
2. Use the PODxt as my preamp and connect to the back of the Imac via USB cable
3. Click monitoring on so I can hear myself play
4. Buy some Bose computer speakers so I can really hear myself play
Right?
I'm guessing I need the PODxt as the preamp. Otherwise, how would I connect the guitar to the Imac? And how would it sound any good?

It's pretty much that easy. You may have to install a podxt driver and there are a few clicks involved but that's about it.
And there are lot's of other way to get guitar in and the guitar presets in garageband sound good.

Beginner's Questions

As a really new beginner for BEx, I would like to ask you guys some basic questions.
1) I have a problem with designing a query to serve our requirement.

2) How can I load a hierarchy from a text file in BI 7.0. I just see the option to maintain the hierarchy in BI, but I can't find the way to load the hierarchy from a text file.

Stupid, but essential question : Waiting until Spring for new MB

I know, I know....this is yet another one of those stupid questions....but I can't stop thinking about it...
After two delayed shipment dates, I am kinda sick of Apple as of right now....I'm hearing that they're possibly coming out with a new MB this coming spring. The new MB supposedly comes with the core 2 duo processor, and a new logic board to fully take advantage of the new processor. I do have a vaio laptop right now..so I guess I don't mind waiting.....except the grueling pain of wanting to have an apple for the next....6 months.....
What would YOU do?.....(should I just wait for my MB to come or should I cancel the order and wait 'til next spring?....)
(again, I know this is a stupid question, so don't mention it....I just wanted to get the general public perspective.)

i was in the same position as you and i totally understand how you feel.
in my case, i could not wait (eventhough i desperately wanted to) because my school starts in a less than a week so i needed a notebook. i received my macbook about a week ago without major problems. all seems to be working fine. however, after owning it, there is really nothing special about the macbook. sure, it's more attractive than other notebooks, but it gives you nothing more and nothing less(except the operating system) than what dell or sony has to offer.
and besides, include me in the less-impressed customer category of the macbook series. even with little things that happen with my macbook (ie overheating), i get paranoid for no apparent reason. simply put, the macbook is a torturing machine. no righful owner should feel this way.
with the macbook series, apple has progressed in terms of the style and versitility that they can bring out to the market. however, they have taken a step backwards in terms of reliability. you should wait for the second generation macbooks where they will be more familiar with its design flaws and hopefully will make it better.
so in conclusion, i'll give you a little SAT format summary:
apple is to steve jobs; as macbook is to paris hilton.

Beginner SSL questions

I am still very much a beginner and this is my first time trying to set SSL up. I am experiencing some issues and I am not really sure what to do. I hope this is the right forum to post this.
When I go to https://xxxx.xxxxx.net/myContext my login index.jsp page displays however
1.) In IE it's not showing the page as secured(no lock).
2.) When I log in using valid credentials the url becomes http://xxxx.xxxxx.net:443/myContext/myServlet
and the page I expect to display doesnt. It only displays this:
3.) None of my stylesheets are being used.
When I go to http://xxxx.xxxxx.net/myContext my login index.jsp page displays perfectly and I am able to log in and do see the expected page.
Apparently I missed a step somewhere or just the obvious but how do I get my index.jsp to use SSL. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Are you intentionally leaving a connector for port 80 open? If you don't need anything to be non-ssl enabled then you should comment out the port 80 connector and just have a connector for port 443. You should then be able to access any of your stuff via https://whatever/whathaveyou...

this is an obvious question but you didn't mention it so just in case - you did create a self signed server certificate and import that into the keystore right? (or use a commercial certificate and import that and the CA chain into your trust store)

Animation question: when adding new layers...

Using CS5. Let's say I have 9 layers in my Photoshop document, and I've successfully created an animation by making some layers visible in some frames and not others. (When making the animation, I'm using the frame view, not the timeline view.) Now let's say that for some reason, I need to add a new layer, perhaps to make the animation look better or to add some missing text. When I add the new layer (call it layer #10), this new layer becomes visible on every single one of the animation frames, and I have to go back to every single frame and remove the new layer #10 from showing. Question: is there a way to avoid this? My goal is to be able to add a new layer without it showing up on every single animation frame I've already finished.

In the animation flyout menu, uncheck New Layers Visible in All Frames.

PLEASE HELP! Text animation question.

Hi,
This might be a dumb question, but it's really stumping me. I want to animate a title using some of the text animation presets, but I can't seem to apply an animation that makes the text appear AND an animation that makes the text disappear. I can do one or the other, but not both.
For example, I want my title's text to appear with "FocusIn", and I want it to disappear with "DropOutByCharacter." How do I do this?! I've searched everywhere and wasted an entire day trying to figure this out!

Along with Steve's tip on doing two Titles (probably the easiest way to handle this), would be to use Keyframed Effects to create your animation. Since Drop Out By Character, is the harder one to do by hand, I'd just add a Blur to the Title, and Keyframe it to start out heavily Blurred (maybe even with a lowered Opacity, also Keyframed) and then Keyframe the Blur out, where you wish to have the Title sharp. Then, add the Drop Out By Character.
The beauty of Keyframing the various Effects is that you can control many at one time on a single Clip. However, the concept is not the easiest to initially grasp. Once you do, you'll likely use Keyframes in lieu of most packaged animation Effects.
Steve has a good series of articles on Keyframing on the Muvipix site. Do not recall if they are in the "free" section, or not. Since there is a ton of great material, articles, tutorials and also Assets, like Motion Footage and Menus there, a subscription often pays for itself in one day of downloading.

Turn off stupid mail animations in mavericks

I need a way to turn off the animations in mail.app in Mavericks. In previous operating systems, a terminal command existed to do this (defaults write com.apple.mail DisableReplyAnimations -bool TRUE , and I believe DisableSendAnimations as well), but that popular terminal command, along with no-glass and perhaps some others, seems to have been disabled in Mavericks.
Does another command exist?
If not, Apple, re-enable it. These animations are horrendously stupid and a terrible design choice.

Are you referring to the new Notifications (in the upper right corner of your screen)?
If so, go to System Preferences > Notifications and drag Mail down to the "NOT in Notif. Center" Category. After that, make sure the window to the right has absolutely nothing checked:
That will stop it.

And: How do I get analytics for the shop if it's embedded in the app magazine?
2) Animations:
I would like to animate text/textboxes into a full screen background picture. I've read that animations with PDF format (for crisp text on the app!) are not supported. How do I solve this problem?

1) You can integrate it via a web overlay, but honestly it is far less complicated and much more likely to work if you just include hyperlinks to your existing web shop and have the reader do the purchasing in the in-app pop-up browser.
2) This is pretty much impossible to do without doing a bunch of work in Edge Animate. To be honest, I don't really think it's ever worth the time spent. I'd look at doing a different design instead that doesn't rely on that style of animation.

I am just a beginner for EJB, and writing a simple example of EJB. Some questions confuse me.
1.     about server
I just use JDK1.3.1 and JSDKEE1.3, is it all right? Do I need another things, for instance, weblogic ( what is this?)?
2.     about deployment
I wrote some code( CMP) include: home interface, remote interface, implement class, and primary key. Now , deploy it? Use ��C:\j2sdkee1.3\bin\deploytool�� command, is it?
I thought every EJB need a XML deployment descriptor, my question is: I write this by myself or use deploytool?
3.     about datebase
I notice some example use Cloudscape, is this database? Whether can I use another database, for instance, MS Access? If I can, how to access it in CMP, and what is the ��Database JNDI Name��( if I use MS Access) when I deploy using deploytool?
4.     about direction
if I finish coding, then compile, and deploy, now, is it OK? I mean, I should move some file to special direction? (I remember the .class file is placed in special direction when I use servlets. )(suppose: I work in C:\mybean. Every file in it)

1. No you do not need anything other than J2SE 1.3.1 and J2EE SDK 1.3 J2EE SDK 1.3 includes a reference implementation that you can use to do pretty much everything that is J2EE platform standard.
Products such as WebLogic, WebSphere are comercial implementations of J2EE platform specifications. And you would use them for commercial/production quality applications.

Beginner's question about scripting and deployment automation

I am new to the SAP and BusinessObjects world. I do production support for BusinessObjects XI R3.1. One of my functions is to deploy Universe.unv and WEBI Report files from development into QA and production. This is currently a manual process involving downloading files and lots of key strokes and mouse clicks using the BusinessObjects Client Tools. My question ->: is there a way to automate this process? Can I do this with the SAP scripting wizard? I am familiar with many different scripting and programming languages, I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

UIView Animation Question

To all,
I have a question about how to handle the asynchronous call when a UIView animation is created. My setup is as follows. I have a method in a view controller that get user input from and then makes external http calls. Since the calls could take a few seconds I wanted to notify the user when the call started and ended. In order to show this message I created a simple animation block in a method which I will list below.
The animation simply slides a box up with a label on it and then slides it back down. A pop up slider if you will.
This is my method which does the http processing simplified down.
My problem is that since the animation call is asynchronous the and takes 4 seconds total to complete. If the HTTP processing takes less then 4 seconds (at times it does) the next displayMessage is called and my animation gets screwed up.
The thoughts I have had were to have a check to see if the animation was running which is set true in the pop up reveal and false in the popup hide. Then I could simply sleep my thread if the boolean was true. But this wasn't working since the animation stop block was never called.
I need to bounce ideas of you guys cause I don't know how to get past this basic problem.

CS5 (and/or 5.5) - animation question

Hi everyone! I have a problem that I just can't seem to work out and hoping some clever person out there will know an answer
I have put together an example of what I am trying to do:
I have 5 objects (the blue rectangles) that I wish to appear in sequence. To do this I selected each object and applied the standard "appear" animation option to each object. (see SCREEN_1 below).
Then I created a button (the pink circle) and added the animations to the button and set them to play (SCREEN_2).
After all the rectangles have appeared, I want them all to disappear so I grouped the rectangles and then chose 'disappear" from the animation options and applied it to the group (SCREEN_3)
And then added this new group animation to the button so it would play after the earlier animations that made the rectangles appear. (SCREEN_4)
Then I previewed my animation - the pink start button starts the animation and it previews (and exports to swf) fine and looks as I want
BUT ONLY ON THE FIRST VIEWING!
If I push the pink start button again, it doesn't play correctly (there is a delay and then the group just appears all at once) . And I CANNOT work out why! And have tried for so long to work this out but am COMPLETELY stumped.
I basically want the animation (rectangles to appear and then disappear after) to repeat everytime the pink start button.
Can anyone out there help?!

this is weird!
I had the same problem, but I figured it out, here's how:
1. do not group the rectangles
2. select all the rectangles and give them the animation you want (pic1)
3. make sure "Hide Until Animated" is checked
4. make a button from your circle and animate each rectangle like pic2
5. after doing that, do it aigain! make 5 more actions (animate) in your button panel but choose "REVERSE" at "options" (pic3)
6. at the timing panel, link the last 5 animations (the ones you choose to reverse)
