Stupid Forum Question

OK, call me an idiot (I've been called worse! )....
But just how in the heck do you post images in this forum? Sometimes its useful to be able to post a screenshot of something to help someone out.
Everytime I try do it, I get a message asking me about "what text do I want to format"....

Hosted somewhere huh? That explains it... that kinda blows.
Oh well, thanks anyway.

  • Stupid forum question- avatar?

I don't like the cartoon default avatar randomly assigned to me and I can't find the process for inserting a pic of m own.
Since this is a camera forum, it seems I should be able to put up an image of my own, nothing inappropriate of course, just can't seem to find the path.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

  • Forum question: How to set Show All Messages as default?

I seem to remember there was a way to set this as a default, so that when one clicks on a topic, all new (unread) posts are shown. Currently, I only see a subset of the new postings, and I have to click on "Show All Messages" to see them all. The number shown initially seems to be arbitrary. I know that postings that I've read will not show up, but how can I get all unread postings to show by default?
    Thanks!

  • OTN Discussion Forum questions are gone

My OTN Discussion Forum questions seem to have been deleted. They were only about 1-2 months old. Does anyone know if they are deleted or archived after a certain time period? I'd like to find them for reference if anyone knows how to do that?

You are posting today's question with username 18e07053-637d-44a1-97ce-f070d9c69384
That is a system-generated name for a new account.
Were those other posts created with the same user account?
Have you recently tried to change your login name (which has been known to totally muck up user profiles, by the way) ?
The site software has no possible ability to magically merge postings from multiple accounts.
I suggest you try to remember older threads and find them using the site search function.
If you can find those threads, you might be able to see if they were posted with the same user account or some previous account.
Once you do that, you can return to this thread and give us all more information on what you may have found..

  • Can iPad or Android tablets reply to forum questions?

Can the iPad be used to write replies to forum questions?
I ask because I have been using an Android tablet recently and though it can be used to input text into browser etc. text fields, it stubbornly refuses to reveal its keyboard when I try to respond to forum questions.
I don't know whether it is a fault with my device, user error or whether iPads and other tablets just can't be used for this purpose.

It completely depends on the specific forum/post you are thinking about.
As stedman1 pointed out, the mobile versions of browsers (i.e., iPad safari, etc.) are almost always limited with respect their desktop versions. For example, if your forum uses flash to post messages, you will never be able to post a message using an iPad at this moment since iPad does not support flash.
That being said, the web has started to be more mobile (and getting more in each day). Most of the websites (and forums) have either dedicated mobile web versions, where they make sure that you can access all information as you were in a normal computer. If that does not work, they even create dedicated apps (there are iPad apps for some webpages) so that you can post/explore the webpage through the app.
Also, one final (and maybe not yet good solution) is to use cloud browsers. The idea with these browsers is that they run on servers and transmit the webpage back to you as images. Your actions (click, keyboard input, etc.) are also captured and transmitted back to the server. This way, you can emulate a real desktop browser on your iPad, which will have the same limitations (or unlimitations) as a desktop browser.
If you have a specific webpage, etc. in mind, just tell us and we can check on your behalf.

  • Cannot View Older Forum Questions and Bookmarking

    Hi,
I noticed in the Lightroom for Beginners forum that you can only view one page of forum questions. You cannot view older forum questions/posts (i.e. pages 2,3,4...). There also is no way to bookmark and/or follow questions/topics/discussions.
Unless I just have a crazy computer
Is it possible to update the forum for these features???
    Thanks

lov2bugu, you said things the exact way I wanted to express them! It was like watching me talking to a SONY’s CEO.
I don’t really think they are not aware of the problems. SONY used to be the 27th largest company in the world, according to Forbes. They are now at the 456th place!!
They are aware of their problems and I think, the move to buy the remaining stocks from Ericsson, is a move to bounce back into the market. They found the right time, where the stock is too low and the economics around the globe don’t  look promising enough. I have to recognize them, all the bad phases they went into this year … hacking attack, loss of their factory in London, global economic climate etc.
But these are not excuses good enough not to produce quality, reliable and technologically advanced goods. I think that SONY is not to blame for the bad course SE has had. I think this is what SONY wants to revert. They want to “embody” all their technology … BRAVIA engines (TV Tech), Walkman and Cybershot tech (using Carl Zeiss lenses), VAIO (Comp tech) and finally PS3. Ericsson tried to integrate them, unsuccessfully.
Overall, I thing SONY, did not have or did not attempt to have the control of SE, hence, the answer you got back from SONY “… anything related to SE must be posted on the website of SE”. I think they will bounce. Just give ‘em some time. I’m willing to give them time, but not too much though. Just because I’ve always loved this brand!

  • IMovie and iDVD, Stupid Upgrade Questions, Sorry Must Ask

Okay, the deal is I have a PowerMac G4 Version 2.1 with a Combo Drive. I am upgrading to Mac OSX 3.0 so I can do certain things in iMovie and acquire a better browser. (My constraints on the iMovie project about which I've been inquiring are that at least 40 people have been waiting for copies of it for about a month and wondering why I don't come through with it--I sent a lengthy explanation to the guy who'll be duplicating it in case anyone asks. That's one reason I'm in such a hurry I have to ask urgent questions at forums and newsgroups and don't take the time to read every word ever written on every one of these systems and their various applications, abilities, and uses.)
I started out thinking I was about one step from having a completed project and the more I learn, the more grim the situation looks. Yet I've done ALL THIS WORK already to create beautiful titles and elaborately-edited outtakes. I HATE to ditch it all if any faint hope flickers into sight!
My Mac came with the following:
iMovie 3.0.3 -- which seems to be working fine, only problem is, due to deficiencies in other equipment, I'm having trouble getting my movie to DVD or into any other form where it can be played anywhere outside the Mac!
iDVD 2.1 -- My feeble brain, inadequate as it may be, has so far gathered the information that to go to DVD, a project can't be played in iMovie and sent straight to a DVD burner (can it?) There has to be some intermediary step. (Right?) People have argued the various merits of iDVD vs. Toast to accomplish this step. I hadn't opened my copy of iDVD because I am in no way near the point of being ready to make a DVD--I have not yet finished editing the project in iMovie. I made the hideous error of ASSUMING that since this came installed in my Mac, it would work fine when needed, just as iMovie did. When I tried to open it just to see what version I had, it wouldn't open and told me this:
    System Requirements
iDVD 2 requires a PowerMac G4 computer with 256 Megs of RAM, a built-in DVD-R Superdrive and Mac OS 10.1.3 or later.
Stupid redundant bonus question #1: WHY would this come installed on a Mac which lacks the hardware to use it? (iMovie could still be used to edit, and then copy projects--if I had a digital video camera--which I don't. The only other way we've figured is to send it back through the Canopus ADVC110 converter I used to get the video in there, and play it out to a VCR--a cumbersome process I've been assured will result in crummy quality.)
Okay, here are the REAL questions:
    1. I don't suppose there's any way the Canopus could be connected to the DVD burner and the information sent to a DVD that way? Just asking.
    2. Obviously the upgrade isn't going to fix things to make iDVD work, as I'm already using Mac OSX 10.2.8, so I would assume its discontent stems from not having the Superdrive--at least, it was complaining something about inadequate hardware and I think that's what it meant. Will connecting a DVD burner via FireWire convince iDVD to work (either automatically or after some sort of tweaking), or am I stuck replacing the drive? I bought a DVD burner the minute I realized my drive was a Combo Drive and not a Superdrive (which is the first time I stuck a blank DVD in it and nothing happened) before learning details about this intermediary step and that there is more than one way to accomplish it.
    3. Is it even worth replacing the Combo Drive with a Superdrive or is it more worth buying a whole new Mac? If I am FORCED to buy a new Mac, what should I do with the old one? (Not only am I ethically opposed to tossing a perfectly good piece of electronic equipment into the ravine, I might get fined for littering. Can a good home be found for it? For that matter it would be a pain as I've saved all sorts of stuff to the Hard Drive which would have to be transferred to the new one before I could get rid of the old one. So can I keep the old one...PLEASE?)
    4. After making the system upgrade, will I be able to bypass iDVD entirely by using Toast, or does Toast also have all sorts of requirements my hardware does not possess so I'll still be SOL, stuck replacing drives or even the whole Mac, or going directly to crummy-quality VHS as there is NO OTHER WAY OUT?
    5. After making the system upgrade, would I be ready for more advanced versions of iMovie and iDVD? Are any upgrades free, or does every improvement cost? Do I get them all at the Apple site, order some of them from some supplier or other the way I did with the Mac OSX upgrade, or what?
Thanks for helping to clear up my massive confusion!!!

Wow, thanks. It's good to know iDVD is still an option, even if I don't buy the Superdrive (is that even possible, to get the Combo Drive taken out of my current Mac and a Superdrive put in? There's a question still unanswered.)
(I think this is good to know--because part of my reasoning in asking the question was to eliminate one option or the other, and now I'm ending up with options of options, but hold on for Part 2 as I do have some questions concerning the capabilities of iDVD and Toast.)
Partly answering one of my own questions (although I'd appreciate confirmation from someone who actually knows,) if these Toast 7 requirements mean what I think they do, I don't see anywhere that it says the computer MUST have a Superdrive and CAN'T use an external DVD burner!
    Toast 7 Titanium
    Requirements:
    * PowerPC G4 processor or faster (G5 recommended for viewing DivX files on your Mac)
    * PowerPC G3 processor and Mac OS 10.2 users, see Toast 6 Titanium or Popcorn
    * Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    * 300 MB of free disk space to install
    * Up to 15 GB of temporary free disk space during usage
    * QuickTime 7 or later
    * CD or DVD burner and recordable media
If this is true (that I can use an external DVD burner) I like Toast already! My Quicktime Player is only version 6.5.2--is it going to be difficult, expensive, or both, to upgrade that? If it is or the other System Requirements are not met I can just go with Toast 6.
As far as those requirements, I promise you I don't understand a word of it but here is what my System Profiler says my Mac has. Maybe someone can make sense of it and help me decide which version of Toast to get or, if not, what to do:

One thing which may really sway me in favor of Toast is, will it make possible burning 2-hour DVDs? Supposedly iDVD will not enable anything longer than 90 minutes, and when I get to the other big project for which I really want to use the Canopus ADVC 110 converter, that is, converting my home movies from either VHS or 8mm video camera tape to DVD--well, ALL of my tapes are two hours long, because that's the way they come!! I don't see being limited to making 90-minute DVDs as anything but another GIANT PAIN of which I'm already amply supplied! So if Toast will fix this dilemma I'm ALL FOR IT!
As always, thanks for help and advice.

  • Stupid Gamepad Question

This proably seems like a stupid question but I am told you can use a PS3 Controller with my 2009 MBP, and I am also told that you can use a wired XBOX 360 controller or wireless if you have a reciever and the correct drivers, but XBOX uses IR when PS3 use bluetooth, so PS3 would work but so should the XBOX because my MBP has an IR reciever?
(If that makes no sense: can I use my WIRELESS XBOX contoller WITHOUT the reciever but WITH the drivers?

Everyone has been extremely helpful to me on this forum. Just about everything I have needed to know about my iPhoneI have gotten here. Just 2 questions.

I've seen replies that simply say "bump". What does that mean? I hope this is not a stupid question.
Thanks again to all for your help here.

  • Probably a stupid Newb question....chkconfig

    Hi all,
This is a very nice distro, especially if you wanted to learn linux, not just use it with a pretty GUI, and it has met ( sometimes exceeded ) my expectations.
The searching the forums, using google extensively, the wiki have made the experience most worthwhile.  The first distro was mandrake, which lasted about 1 month because I could not learn anything with it.  Anyway on to the question at hand.
What is the Arch linux equivalent of chkconfig?  Or does one have to download the package itself via pacman?
The reason I ask is that I would like to turn off all unneeded services ( I am a bit of a security hound, at least with a windows box ).   The Linux box will just be a workstation for myself, to do email, web surfing, maybe some online buying and eventually development.   No remote access to the machine is needed for myself ( as it is off, when I am not using it ).
Hopefully, I phrased the question correctly!
    Thanks,
    BobL

    BobL wrote:
Thanks for the follow up Phrakture.   However, I did not quite follow when you said that chkconfig is a wrapper for make calls.   I thought it merely listed running services.   I did check on the make command and I cannot find how chkconfig even relates to what you mentioned.   Then again the article was mentioned in the context of a RedHat article.  So perhaps I am switching terms between different distrubutions....probably not a good idea.
I do know what "wrapping" is...with the programming background I have, I just didn't follow your context.
oh, crap - I mixed it up with checkinstall... my fault

Hello. I'm new here. I've notice that many questions are posted and viewed but it seems many go unanswered. Are there any Apple people who come here and answer questions, or is the forum users only? Thanks!

Thanks very much, Jim.  As I suspected, I am the problem! I had changed nothing but apparently a setting changed itself.  Problem was not exactly as you proposed but it led me to a solution.  Under Settings/Preferences/Display/Show all posts in a topic was selected and I changed it to Show first post in a topic and number of replies (Default).
Your very prompt help is much appreciated.  It hasn't escaped my notice that you help lots of folks on here and my guess was that my answer would come from you.

    Driver & Application Questions
    • Where do I download drivers and applications for my product
To download drivers and applications, please follow these steps:
Click on SupportClick on DownloadsChoose the region you are in, and the countrySelect your product type, then your specific product/model and click next Choose your Operating System (such as Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit)Begin to download the various programs needed.
    • Will future driver releases be certified for Windows Vista
Yes, all of our future releases will be Microsoft certified.
    • Applications from the original Sound Blaster X-Fi CD do not work in Windows Vista. Will there be downloads available for all missing applications and when
Driver downloads and basic software such as the Audio Console are available for download from our web site. A free CD containing the full application suite will soon to be available to order from our Online Store (a Shipping & Handling charge will apply).
    • Why does the packaging say Windows Vista Ready when there is no Vista-compatible install CD in the packaging
This is to indicate that drivers are available online to support Windows Vista.
    • Is there a difference in the Windows Vista and Windows XP implementation of the X-Fi CMSS3D feature
Yes. The architecture of Vista doesn t allow a feature like CMSS-3D to operate in hardware for applications that use the Microsoft API s. If a game for example uses OpenAL, then CMSS-3D will run in hardware but if a Microsoft API is used it operates on the host within Windows Vista s application level effects architecture.
    • Is there a difference in the Windows Vista and Windows XP implementation of the Crystalizer feature
No.
    • Why is it taking so long for Creative to provide full driver and application support for its products in Windows Vista, given the 6 year development time of the OS
Even though Windows Vista has been in development for several years and in public beta for a long time, the key reason for delays in providing finalised signed drivers for Windows Vista which affected several manufacturers is that the audio features in Windows Vista were incomplete until a few months before its final release. Other features in Windows Vista such as APO s (Audio Processing Objects) could not be installed for our products until do***entation and tools were available from Microsoft. This was an issue for all aftermarket sound card vendors. Since we received the correct tools and do***entation for implementation, we began working diligently to finish the development and release the driver updates for our range. Given the considerable number of products, it is not feasible to release everything at once, so we staggered the driver release schedule.
    • There is a lengthy gap between driver releases. Would it be possible to have more frequent beta-version releases
We focus on delivering stable driver sets as this is more efficient than multiple interim releases. We anticipate releasing a further X-Fi update in the end-May/June timeframe. Feature Loss
    • Why is SPDIF passthrough not working with Windows Vista 64-bit's Will it ever
SPDIF passthrough is available in the latest X-Fi update. For the Audigy Series, we cannot support this feature in Windows Vista 64-bit.
    • Will decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS signals be supported in the future If not, why not
These functions are not supported at driver level in Windows Vista and going forward will be supported at application level by applications such as Power DVD or WinDVD.
    • Will DVD-Audio be supported in the future
We are not supporting DVD-Audio in Windows Vista.
    • Will 6.1 speaker mode be available in future drivers If not, is this because of Creative or Microsoft
No, as Windows Vista does not support this speaker configuration.
    Bugs/Specific Issues
    • Why is the CPU utilization on some Windows Vista systems significantly higher when using X-Fi CMSS-3D than on Windows XP
This is a 3rd party product issue on which Creative cannot comment. We have made CPU utilization improvements in the forthcoming X-Fi update.
    • Why do I get BSOD and system instability when an X-Fi card is installed in my Windows Vista system with 4GB or more of RAM
This issue will be addressed in the next X-Fi driver update. It is also recommend to check with your motherboard manufacturer for the latest version of the motherboard BIOS.
    • Enabling the Crystalizer during ASIO Playback with an Elite Pro causes reproduceable BSODs (CTEXFIFX.DLL) why
We have reproduced this issue and are working on a solution.
