Stupid newbie question camera card readers

Hello, Well I just purchased a G5 and now I'm ready to open the box. But I want to know if the computer has built in camera memory card reader. I'm not finding anything on the box or under specifications on the website. I don't want to open the box if it does not have a card reader - might need to return the unit without a re-stocking fee. So does a PowerPC G5 iMac have a built in reader? Or do I need an outboard reader?
Thanks
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Welcome to the discussions!
You might have wanted to look into this before you tied up that kind of cash.
No Mac of any model or generation has a built-in card reader. All Macs have plenty of USB ports to attach a camera or USB card reader to.
Don't let this be a deal breaker. If you are switching, Macs have a lot to offer, even if they don't have a card reader.

  • Probably a stupid Newb question....chkconfig

    Hi all,
    This is a very nice distro, especially if you wanted to learn linux, not just use it with a pretty GUI, and it has met ( sometimes exceeded ) my expectations.
    The searching the forums, using google extensively, the wiki have made the experience most worthwhile.  The first distro was mandrake, which lasted about 1 month because I could not learn anything with it.  Anyway on to the question at hand.
        What is the Arch linux equivalent of chkconfig?  Or does one have to download the package itself via pacman?
    The reason I ask is that I would like to turn off all unneeded services ( I am a bit of a security hound, at least with a windows box ).   The Linux box will just be a workstation for myself, to do email, web surfing, maybe some online buying and eventually development.   No remote access to the machine is needed for myself ( as it is off, when I am not using it ).
    Hopefully, I phrased the question correctly!
    Thanks,
    BobL

    Thanks for the follow up Phrakture.   However, I did not quite follow when you said that chkconfig is a wrapper for make calls.   I thought it merely listed running services.   I did check on the make command and I cannot find how chkconfig even relates to what you mentioned.   Then again the article was mentioned in the context of a RedHat article.  So perhaps I am switching terms between different distrubutions....probably not a good idea.
    I do know what "wrapping" is...with the programming background I have, I just didn't follow your context.
    oh, crap - I mixed it up with checkinstall... my fault  :oops:  :oops:  :oops:

  • Stupid newbie question

    I am trying to learn JSP. To that end, I use published code to learn the syntax. One set of code is the following:
    NameHandler.java
    package hello;
    public class NameHandler {
        private String username;
        public NameHandler() {
            username = null;
        public void setUsername( String name ) {
            username = name;
              public String getUsername() {
            return username;
    hellouser.jsp
    <%@ page import="hello.NameHandler" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="mybean" scope="page" class="hello.NameHandler" />
    <jsp:setProperty name="mybean" property="*" />
    <html>
    <head><title>Hello, User</title></head>
    <body bgcolor="#ffffff" background="background.gif">
    <%@ include file="dukebanner.html" %>
    <table border="0" width="700">
    <tr>
    <td width="150">   </td>
    <td width="550">
    <h1>My name is Duke. What's yours?</h1>
    </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td width="150"   </td>
    <td width="550">
    <form method="get">
    <input type="text" name="username" size="25">
    <br>
    <input type="submit" value="Submit">
    <input type="reset" value="Reset">
    </td>
    </tr>
    </form>
    </table>
    <%
        if ( request.getParameter("username") != null ) {
    %>
    <%@ include file="response.jsp" %>
    <%
    %>
    </body>
    </html>There are three other files, but the problem is not necessarily with the other parts. I compiled the java file and have both the .java and .class file in the same folder. I then packaged the site and uploaded it to my hosting site. When I try to run hellouser.jsp, I get the following error:
    The value for the useBean class attribute hello.NameHandler is invalid
    Now, I did try to find out what the error means on the Internet, but I got somewhat confused. There was suggestions of changing scope to type in the header of the .jsp file. Others suggested declaring a public default constructor. Since I am a newbie to Java and JSP program, I am not exactly sure what that is. Also, the site that published this code had very specific places for folders and their contents for the file to be run. Sadly, I can't exactly copy this structure. How can I tell the code to find the resources it is looking for?
    Thank you for your time.

    Hello,
    you have not included code where you are actually using the bean, something like
    username = request.getParameter("username");
    mybean.setUsername(username);If you want this bean to be available to all pages in the application change the scope to session
    <jsp:useBean id="mybean" scope="session" class="hello.NameHandler" />Sometimes when adding a new class such as NameHandler you need to restart the web server for it to be detected.
    Regarding the constructor, you need a "zero argument constructor", which you have done, i.e. there are no parameters in the brackets for NameHandler().
    Instead of using null you could try initialising the variable with
    private String username = "";but I dont think the problem lies with your class, more likely to be the way you are trying to use it within the JSP

    How do I use my tablet as a mobile phone

    hi tathraman,
    If you have a WiFi only tablet, you can try to use apps like Viber, Textplus, or similar to call or send messages. Textplus lets you send free text messages to any mobile phone number in US/Canada.

  • Sorry for the stupid newb questions, don't want to make a bad buy

    and I am pretty much an idiot when it comes to technology.
    Here's what I am looking for. Hopefully, one of you kind souls who are far smarter than I am, can point me in the right direction.
    I want an MP3 player for working out. I would really like it to be able to do the following:
    -shuffle playlists I add in without always going through the same songs in the same order.
    -be able to be used with an armband, or at the very least, a belt clip. (definitely prefer armband though)
    -hold enough music to be able to get me through about 2 hours worth of working out.
    -be able to withstand a fair amount of shock and wear and tear, as I also do martial arts training. (no, I am not going to try to cleave anyone with it)
    One of the things I kept noticing when trying to read through specs, was the listed bit rates for songs in MP3 format. Virtually everything I have is at 320, but the highest I've seen listed is 28.
    I'm assuming it will still work, but I wanted to make absolutely sure because I would get extremely frustrated to find out I had to redo a rather huge collection of music.
    I was looking at Creative NOMAD? MuVo? 2 as a logical choice, but I wanted to see if I could get an expert opinion on what might be better. Is 52MB going to be enough machine for what I want, or do I need to look at something in the GB and up dept. Also, how much of a beating will it take? Is there a better choice, even if it costs more money?
    Also, are the players that start at like 5GB pretty bulky? I would think they would be, which is a big cause for concern. I have enough trouble lifting my weights, without worrying about cramping up while trying to lug a piece of Samsonite filled with melodic electrons. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your help.

    If you're expecting the player to be bumped around I would strongly suggest you get a flash player. The largest you can get is Gb (I think either the MuVo N200 or V200), and you've already mentioned the MuVo? 52Mb player which is equally good. Not sure sure if the MuVo N200/V200 shuffle, but I'm sure the MuVo? does.
    All Creative players will play 320 kbit/s, this is the highest rate you can encode at for MP3/WMA.

  • Probably a Stupid Newbie Question, but....

    Picked up a 8300 series Curve a couple of weeks ago.  Had it synched with my Outlook on my pc.  About a week ago the synch stopped working and I noticed that when the phone was plugged into the USB cord the little charger symbol would only stay lit up for about 7 seconds before disappearing.  On the Desktop Manager screen its says "Device Connected: (PIN): None"  Thinking it was perhaps a faulty USB cord (after unplugging and restarting it several times) I bought a new USB Cord, and now the charger symbol won't even light up and it remains "Device Connected: (PIN): None"
    Wondering if anyone has any suggestions?
    Thanks

    First off, I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Desktop Manager.

  • Stupid Newbie Question-Sending STP back to FCP

    So, I send my FCP 6 project to a STP multitrack project. I do some mixing, add sound effects, etc.
    Now what? How do I get it back into FCP? Do I even bother? Should I export the audio as AC3 in STP and the video as MPEG-2 and join the two streams in the DVD creator?

    First, I duplicate the timeline in FCP so that I keep a timeline intact with original audio. Once I finish my work in STP, I export the mix as an aiff. I bring that aiff into my duplicated timeline in FCP and use it to completely replace the audio in that timeline. There's no way to maintain a multi track project going from FCP to STP and back again. Should you need to open the aiff file in FCP, STP will open the multi track project you originally started with.

  • Stupid newbie question here: When setting up for hot sync, both PC and smartphone will ask for "device name" but how do I know which devide I'm naming? If I'm on the phone, do I specify the phone or the computer; and vice versa.

    Hello and thank you for using the Palm Help Forums!
    It's more like naming the partnership. By "naming" your device is doesn't do anything harmful. If you name it Pat's Treo, when syncing it tot he computer, hotsync will say "Syncing with Pat's Treo." You can name your device Fido for all it matters.

  • I uploaded photos from my camera card onto my desktop in a folder. I then moved that folder onto my dock just to make things organized, and now that I'm trying to open the folder, there is a huge question mark over it and wont let me see the photos.

    I am not sure whats going on! These were photos of my best friends wedding dress, and now they are gone. I erased them off of the camera card I was using from my boyfriend (probably a dumb idea), and now I can't "re-upload" them. Now I feel like I lost them forever. Can someone help??

    Shot in the dark.
    Did iPhoto launch? Check iPhoto and see if they in there.
    Did you put it on the right side of the dock where the stacks are? Check in Documents.
    A folder with a question mark usually means the dock item is no longer connected to an application.

  • Ipod camera connector and compatability with card readers

    I have ipod classic video with ipod camera connector.  It will not recognise a card reader and unfortunately my camera won't connect to the USB cabel anymore.  How do I find out what card readers are compatible or is it the Sandisk Extreme III card?

  • PCMCIA media card readers - suck 100% of CPU for copy?

    Hello!
    I've bought two media readers - for camera memory cards - for my Powerbook. They are PCMCIA cards, one is a Sandisk card, for SDs, MMC, and Memory Sticks, among others. The other is a no-name brand for CF cards.
    While the Powerbook (10.4.11, 2 GB ram, 1.67 Ghz) will recognize the readers - and the cards I insert - should I attempt to copy anything to or from the card, the entire computer gets thrashed. The CPU usage (Finder, Kernel_task, etc) go to 100%, and iStat Pro has shown CPU load numbers between 15 and 25! What the heck?
    At the same time, if I insert either PCMCIA readers (with cards) into my old PowerBook 5300CS (OS 8.5, 48 MB Ram, 100 Mhz), the CPU is not fully used. Ditto for my 2.2 Ghz Macbook Pro and a Belkin Expresscard SDHC reader - in fact, it copies at the card's full speed and uses only a couple of % of CPU. It's running Leopard now, but it didn't have any trouble in Tiger either. That's why I think it's a Powerbook error.
    It will happen with either reader, any brand/type of card, and has been occurring for quite a while - since sometime in early 2007. I don't remember it always acting this badly, so it may have been related to an OS update.
    Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be, and any fixes?
    Thanks

    Hi, N23. That's interesting. It was just a guess, as I said.
    Since the beginning of 2004, when I bought my Titanium Powerbook as a new, recently-discontinued model, I've read everything in all the Tibook forums here at AD on a daily basis. Though my memory isn't what it once was, I can say with pretty good confidence that this problem of unreasonable CPU loading only when a CardBus card reader is in use has very rarely, and maybe never, been reported in those forums. This despite the fact that every time someone has posted there to complain that their camera won't transfer pictures to their Powerbook, I've recommended using a CardBus reader instead of connecting the camera. No one, to the best of my recollection, has ever posted back to upbraid me for giving that advice because it didn't work out for them. And this has included lots of people who were running Jaguar, Panther, and Tiger, and a handful who were running Leopard. So I agree with you that the problem is rare and weird.
    I don't understand why this is, but I know from experience that some card readers (CardBus and USB; I have no experience with FW readers) can't properly handle cards with capacities higher than 1GB, which of course are much more common now than they were a while back. So I wonder whether a mismatched card and reader might be at the root of the problem for some people who have it. Unfortunately I don't recall exactly what sort of misbehavior occurred when I tried to read a 2GB card in incompatible readers. I know that whatever it was, I didn't check Activity Monitor at the time to see if it could shed any light on the problem. I don't have access now to my daughter's camera card or the readers in question to run any new tests.
    I also wonder, without directly disputing your view that pre-Spotlight OS versions might have had the same problem, whether CPU-hogging Dashboard widgets could be implicated in some way. Widgets were often found to be consuming outrageous percentages of CPU cycles in the early days of Tiger. Might there be some widget most people don't have or use that swings into action when a CardBus reader is connected, but not when a FW or USB reader is? Sounds unlikely, but I have no idea. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who can confirm that the CPU-overloading problem also occurs in Panther or Jaguar, and not just in Tiger and Leopard.

  • My HP Pavilion Elite m9058n PC's Card-Readers Stop Reading/Recognizing My SDHC Cards

    Just about 2 weeks ago my HP Pavilion Elite m9058n PC's card readers stop reading or recognizing my memory cards used to store the pictures I took. They used to be able to read my SDHC cards (Sandisk, Kinston, Panasonic) before. Don't understand why they stop reading, even recognizing all of them. My O/S is Windows 8. The initial symptom was the options for processing the inserted cards seemed to be showing up slower than before and then I had to withdraw the cards and re-insert them so that such option screen appear. Then later on it didn't show up at all. And when I checked "This PC" ("computer" or "my computer" in other Windows versions), I didn't see the DRIVE LETTERS, like G, K, or J, etc. for the memory card readers any more. Now if I connect my camera directly with my PC, I see on the camera model number on "This PC" screen.
    Please help me understand what this problem is and kindly provide me with the best solutions you can.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi,
    I understand your card reader is not working as you have previously experienced. Take a look at the following document, Using and Troubleshooting Memory Card Readers (Windows 8), specifically the "Resolving issues with memory cards" section. Hopefully there will be something in there that is useful for you. Best of luck. Have a wonderful day.

  • Total Newbie Question ... Sorry :-(

    I know it's a windows thing, and I am now converted to Mac but I gotta know this because it's doing my head in. It's a complete stupid green gilled newbie question.
    When installing new programs on a Mac can you create shortcuts to the programs on the Dock? I did what I THOUGHT it would be, i.e I made an Alias and stuck it in the dock, but on rebooting my Mac later on, in place of the shortcuts where 3 question marks which when clicked on did absolutely nothing???
    Help?

    You aren't installing something from a dmg file are you? The dmg is a disk image – kind of a virtual CD. So when you double click the dmg and then get the little disk/hardrive/custom icon on your desktop that is the same as if you had mounted a CD. You then need to drag the application off of that "CD" into your application folder. Then it is truly installed.
    You can then "eject" the icon your your desktop. This is what happens when you shutdown and without remounting the image your dock shortcut can't find the original.
    Just a thought.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

    At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
    Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
    Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
    CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
    My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
    the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
    the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
    We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
    The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
    Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
    The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
    'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
    'the disk was not ejected properly'.
    So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
    Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
    the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
    the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
    From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
    Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • Newbie - use camera for video and external microphone?

    Hi,
    This is a totally newbie question, but I'm a total newbie to the video part of the mac universe.
    I want to use a camcorder to "stream" live video into iMovie (which will record it to the hard drive), and use an EXTERNAL microphone, plugged into the microphone port of the computer, as the audio source (I want to use a good mic).
    Will iMovie support doing this? Is it automatic that the external mic overrides the mic on the camcorder?
    Thanks,
    Dmitri
    P.S. this is part of a bigger question, which is, how to get the best possible audio using a standard (cheap) camcorder. I haven't bought a camcorder yet, and am open to getting one that can take a good mic through a line-in. Any suggestions? - Thanks, D

    I wrote a reply to your earlier post ..but either the system went offline, or some other glitch occurred, and the post didn't appear. So I'll try to answer your earlier message and the one just above.
    Congratulations on getting the camera, by the way!
    "..play video through camera" option in the preferences, which MUTES the sound in iMovie.." ..Yes, this has been standard in iMovie from the earliest versions. There may be a slight delay between the audio you hear straight from the camera and the audio coming out of your Mac. To stop the annoyance of hearing the audio separately and slightly out-of-sync (..you'll find that the video on the Mac lags very slightly, too, during import..) you can turn OFF the Mac's audio with that preference.
    "..I assume this goes away if I unplug the firewire cable.." ..er..? You mean that the preference switches back when you unplug? I can't remember: try it. But don't unplug the FW cable in the middle of an import!
    What I was previously trying to post was:
    "..instructional/promotional videos to display online.." ..You don't say if you'll be walking around to do these demos, or if you're demonstrating computer software. If walking around you might want to use a "gun" mic to point at you, or a tie-clip mic, so that it's always clipped to your clothes ..but that will trail a cable to the camcorder unless you use a radio mic. [..And you've now bought a tie-clip mic; well done..]
    If you're doing demos of computer software, then you probably wouldn't need a camcorder at all, but just a "screen-recorder" application like 'Snapz Pro' or 'iShowU'. In that case, you'd just want a simple mic to stand on your desk, to record your speech as you work your computer, and for adding extra narration afterwards.
    I still don't understand why you want to capture directly to iMovie. If you're using a camcorder, surely you'd want to capture to tape, in case you need to do three or four "takes" of the same material ..and then you only need to import, and fill up your hard disc with, the best of those takes.
    And if you're recording a computer screen, then you wouldn't capture with iMovie at all, but with one of those other programs, above..
