Stupid question re: file deletion

I am trying to make some room on my hard disk, and when I go to add/remove programs (windows xp) I have 6 entries for "Ipod for Windows" with a couple of different icons.
All are dated: 2005-9-23, 2005-10-12, 2005-11-17, 2006-1-10, 2006-3-23. The 9-23 and 11-17 have a little screen w/cd icon, and the others have an ipod icon.
Can I delete all but the most recent? Are they doing anything besides taking up a lot of space?
Thanks!

Yes you can delete them, they are old iPod software updaters. The iPod Updater is integrated with iTunes 7 now so these are redundant. It's probably a good idea just to hang on to the last one in case you ever need it however is still available from Apple downloads.

• Help! Newbie has a stupid question on file specs

I was given a file that seems to be a native Final cut file. I am using final cut for the first time and just need to find out what this particular file already has for:
Aspect Ratio:
Resolution:
Video Format:
Audio: Stereo:
FPS:
I'm wondering where I can look in the program to get these answers.
I know that I'll then need to convert this file to the specs that are needed and am hoping this is fairly straight forward.
Any info is appreciated! This is a sudden need and it looks like I'll be learning the program in the future, I just don't have time at the moment and am afraid I might be looking in the wrong place in the program for the answers.
Thanks!

A project file or a movie file? How do you know it's from FCP? As per Jerry but you could also open into QT and look at most of the properties.

• File.delete() question.

Does anyone know what instances cause the method File.dete() to fail? Would simply having seperate File objects pointing at the same file path cause the delete to fail? If so is there any way around this or to overcome it? Thanks in advance.
Ross

Does anyone know what instances cause the method File.delete() to fail? The file doesn't exist, you don't have the necessary access level (at the OS level) to delete it, or you are on Windows and the file is currently open.
Would simply having seperate File objects pointing at the same file path cause the delete to fail? No.

• Stupid question on uninstalling

K, I know this is probably a really stupid question, but how do you uninstall applications/programs on the MacBook running OSX? I have been a PC user my whole life and FINALLY made the jump (so glad I did). But I am unsure on how to uninstall things (i.e. poker games, chat programs etc). Do you just drag the icon to the trash and delete? Any help on this would greatly be appreciated!

Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper 1.6
Yank 1.31
SuperPop 1.0b2
Uninstaller 1.99
Spring Cleaning 8.0

System.out.print("");

JAVA 2 IDE

Please help me out!
When nothing shows on screen I don't know what I'm donig is right or wrong!

If you are using swing (which is not supported in the browsers' default VM), you can enable your browser to use the plugin jre by converting your html page with the html converter. You can download this from http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.3/converter.html
Also be aware that your browser might have cached older versions of your .class files. You might need to delete them first.
I recommend using the appletviewer to test your applet first. Open a command line and run:
appletviewer your_page.html

• Stupid question re iTunes match and family sharing

So, here is my dilemma...we have a large family and a ton of os devices--iphones, iPads, apple tv's, iMacs, MacBooks, etc. Up until now, we have set everyone up on the same apple id, which has been crazy--my and my wife's phone ringing with the kids' FaceTime calls, me not being able to sign into iTunes match because there were too many devices associated with our account, and so on. Now, wit the upgrade to iOS 8, my wife's phone is ringing when I receive calls and vice versa. So, I was looking into the family sharing, but am not sure how that affects iTunes match. I want to keep my iTunes match, because I have a huge music library and enjoy being able to listen to my music anywhere. I guess my questions is, what is the best way to set up my accounts now? Keep my apple id for my iOS devices, and set everyone else up as a "family member" under sharing with them having their own apple id's? If so, what does that do to my iTunes match library? can I keep iTunes match and still have family sharing on? I don't care if I can share my music library with everyone in my family, but what I do care about is that I don't want to lose my access to iTunes match and my entire library, some of which consists of songs downloaded 7 years ago. I know it's a stupid question, but as much as I've read and searched, I still haven't found the answer to my question. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds very bad... you can try this, create a account for each member of the family, delete all products (leave all your devices as new) and put the accounts in the devices again, for example, this iPad is from the kid, put the Apple ID of the kid in her iPad, after, this iPhone is from your wife, put the Apple ID from your wife in her iPhone. But remember, the purchases save in the Apple IDs when the family use before, for change the purchases contact with Apple.

• How to make JDS confirm file deletion?

I use the bash shell when logged in over SSH and I always set the following alias just in case I do something stupid:
alias rm="rm -i"Is there a similar setting for JDS that I can tell it to confirm file delete whenever I try to delete a file (i.e. popup a standard "Are you sure?" dialog box)?
Thanks!

By default JDS file browser "deletes" files to the trash can - a la windoze Recycle bin 8-( -
so it doesn't feel the need to double check as you can always reclaim the file from there.
Emptying the trash includes an "are you sure" which can be configured from the folders settings pane:
Launch->Preferences->Desktop Preferences->Folders and pick the "Behaviour" tab
If you mean you want the double check made in a terminal or console displayed within JDS, as opposed to using the file browser, then you need to place a suitable command in the configuration for the shell you're using e.g. .profile or .cshrc etc.

• File deletion in root and subdirectories.

Greetings,
I have a question regarding Batch scripting. I am trying to create a system maintenancing script which removes .TMP and .BAK files from all of my drives both subdirectories and directories above. Let's say the Batch script would be placed into "Folder3"
in the following internal drive address "C:\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\Folder4\Folder5". And I want the batch script to remove files from folders 4 and 5 as subdirectories but also to remove files from C: Drive and folders 1, 2, and of course 3 itself
but without removing folders. And I'd like to apply this method to all drives simultaneously without a human user personally moving the script via cut/copy and pasting from drive to drive. The other alternative which can come into consideration is to create
a Batch File with any address location on the internal drive and when running this Batch file it'll create additional Batch Files on specified (multiple) drives at the very root of drives in the drive address of C:\ for instance, and initializes the required
file deletion process. Some of the folders require my Administrator priviliges therefore I'd like to create a code within the script that ask for user permission and says "Yes" but without actually asking from me as the user to click "Ok"
or "Yes" when running the script itself or to fully bypass the firewall. I have created the other part of the coding for deleting specified superfluous file types and in what way it's just the sub and above-directory part of it that gives me a pause
to proceed. Any help is greatly welcome or pointers. If my request would seem cluttered please notify me of it and I'll try to simplify it down, although I hope I wasn't too confusing with the elaboration.
Thank you in advance, even for the consideration.
Kind Regards.

• IPhoto Question- Library file size is doubling my actual picture folder?

By importing all of my photos from my "pictures" folder into iPhoto, does this take double the space on the hard drive?
In other words would it be just like doubling my picture folder?

Thanks.
Your answer raises another question. If I delete all my originals, how do I revert to the original after a bad edit, or like situation?
I'm new to Mac so if these sound like stupid questions sorry.
It seems if I delete all the original pictures after an import there would also be no way to export them should, don't hit me! , I go back to a PC. (just an example)

• How do I fix flashing question-mark-file-icon issue on reboot?

My Mac Book Air 11" has been a bit strange recently, so I decided that a full clean would be a good idea. I had no important files I wanted to keep, so i went ahead and reinstalled the OS. Apparently that doesn't delete everything, so I did some research. Apparently I have to delete the drive. So I did, using the command-r method. I erased my HD and made a new one, but upon reboot I get this flashing-question-mark-file icon. How do I fix this?

After you erased the drive, did you install the OSX?

• Possible Stupid Question on Aliases

We're on iMS/SunONE 5.2. What I've yet to figure out is how to do something so simple that I may be overlooking the obvious solution. This is to duplicate what /etc/aliases does in sendmail. I.E take an email address which does not match a particular existing user and deliver that message to the specifed recipient. There are two aspects of this which I need to address.
1) Delivery of inbound mail if account is local. For example... [email protected] to [email protected] I think I understand this as I just need to add an alternate address for bob.jones into the ldap. Not centralized but the concept makes sese.
2) Forwarding of inbound mail to other mail servers. For example [email protected] to [email protected].edu where our.listserv.edu is handled by a seperate mail server. In this case the /etc/aliases file sendmail uses makes this dirt simple. Unfortunately i've poured through the iMS docs and have yet to find how to do this. It may have to do with terminology as I'm not sure what iMS calls this type of proceedure. We have many of these (hundreds) and not having a centralized way of handling these would be very very difficult. What is the solution here?
Thanks,
-Patrick

Not a stupid question at all, I fought with the same concept coming from sendmail. The concept is that it's simple to redirect mail using the aliases file (/etc/mail/aliases) and it only took one line to do it.
Under iMS you need to expand your mind and accept that ldap is <insert deity> and everything is done differently.
Alias entries need to be adapted to one of -
individual accounts (mailalternateaddress)
or
a new ldap entry with it's forward settings going to your other addresses.
or
a mail list, for local one to many distributions.
This applies to direct ldap and dirsync mode, however if you're running in dirsync mode, ensure you run the dirsync after making changes.
Finally, if you create an aliases file in -
<msg-home>/config/aliases
and you are thorough on the addresses, they still work.
Just my experience, search for "aliases" in the forum.

• A very simple, very stupid question

When I do screen grabs (shiftctrl+apple4) where do those pictures go??? I can't find them anywhere though I do hear the "camera snap" sound. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Screen shots are saved as .tiff files on the desktop. If you want to put the screen shot in the Clipboard, rather than create a file, hold down the Control key when you press the other keys. You can then paste the picture into a document.
You can also take pictures of the screen using the Grab application (in the Utilities folder).
(And that was not a stupid question!)

• HT204053 Stupid question, but how do I get to/access my iCloud?!

Stupid question, but how do I get to/access my iCloud? All this time, I've been under the impression that every time I plug in & lock my screen, things on my phone are backed up in my cloud, but I've never been able to find it to check! And, yes, I'm blonde! Please help me!

You can't see the backup, all you can do is confirm that it was successfully completed. To do this, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and look at the very bottom under Back Up Now. It will show the time/date of your most recent backup. If you see this, you do have a backup in iCloud and can restore it to your device in the future if you ever need to. (You also can't see any of the files in a backup, you can only restore it to your device.)

• Adobe reader X 10.1.1 installer file deletes itself after installation starts?

On my windows 7 pro 64bit, I downloaded the installer and installed adobe reader 10.1.1. Right after I started the installation the installer file disappeared. Did the installer file delete itself? Is this normal and as designed?
The installer file name:
install_reader10_en_air_gtbd_aih.exe

The answer to the original poster's question is that this is normal and as designed.
But *WHY* did Adobe design it this way? It's simple enough to make a copy before doing the installation, but the first time it happens I have to stop and figure out if it's normal.
I suppose there might be some benefit for the average naive user, but still, most installers don't have this behavior.
