Stupid WMV Files

Everytime I open a WMV file in Windows Media Player, or even the WMV player provided by Microsoft, it does not work; instead I recieve an error saying "The File Format Is Not Valid", although I am POSITIVE it is. I've tried changing the file format and all that comes up is a very colorful and pixilated screen. Please Help!

Flip4Mac should handle all your wmv content needs. I've had it installed forever, and no problems here. If you're having issues, I'd recommend making sure you're up to the latest versions of all your software...OS, QT, etc. Might want to download the most recent Combo update from Apple downloads.
BTW, there is an uninstaller for F4M within the folder..should be in your apps folder, but, again, it's quite worth having it available....there's a lot of wmv content out there.

  • Play WMV Files in Quicktime

    Hi,
I run Win XP & Surfari. I am trying to get away from running Media Player. I wish to play WMV files in Quicktime players. I do not wish to use a 3rd party player I just want to be able to open the WMV & it runs in Quicktime. I do not not want to go through the hassle of using another program to convert the file I just want to be able to run it in Quicktime. Is this now possible? I have read other posts in the Forum and nobody has answered this question directly they just say convert..... & that is a stupid answer & not satisfactory
    Many thanks in advance
    PS

Again, QuickTime for windows can't play .wmv or.wma, in this link look to the column on the right, Supported File Formats.

I created a imovie and tried to upload to you tube but the file type was not compatible with you tube applications.  Wmv files are, is there a way to convert imovie to wmv?  If not, is there a proceedure to upload an imovie so that it will work on you tube?  Any help would be apprieciated. :~(

  • There is no video when I import a wmv file.

I'm trying to edit a video. When I bring in the wmv file, I can see the picture in teh organizer, but when I bring it into the project, I can "see" the audio in the timeline, but can't view the video in either the timeline or the sceneline.

    Welcome to the forum.
Are you on a PC, or a Mac?
While not an ideal format to edit, WMV Import is supported on a PC.
What OS are you using, and which version? The reason that I ask this is that before Vista, MS included about all of the WMV CODEC's, with the OS. With certain versions of Vista, one had to go to the MS Web site, and download the Vista CODEC pack, to get them all. Not sure if the MS CODEC's have been put back into the OS installation for all versions of Win7.
Last, how does that WMV play in Windows Media Player, or another player, such as VLC, or MediaPlayer Classic HC (both better than WMP in my opinion).
    Good luck,

  • MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files.

Since "upgrading" to Lion my MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files, all I get is a black screen and the audio.  It's so frustrating!!
I've read many other posts all along the same lines and wherever possible I've tried to follow the advice which has been given but nothing works.    I've updated all the drivers I can and I've even reinstalled Lion, nothing makes a difference.
I'm not really looking for any more advice, all I want is someone from Apple to read these posts, realise there is problem and get working on a fix or update.
I had no problems when running Snow Leopard and it would seem, looking at everyone else's problems, that the common issue is Lion.   Seriously, this is one area where Lion is a backwards step.   It should just work (like most things from Apple), but it doesn't.
Personally I believe there is a problem with Lion but from what I've found out from speaking to friends with other Apple kit, this might be a random issue only affecting some people as some have said they've had no problems while others have had the same issues as me.    One guy reinstalled Lion and it resolved the issue for him, I've not been as lucky.
As I say, I'm not really looking for more advice, simply some sort of update from Apple to fix it.   PLEASE!!!

This is a peer-to-peer user forum. Perhaps you would see more action if you and others would file a formal "Bug" report with Apple QuickTime technical people rather than repeatedly reporting a possible problematic problem which may or may not affect others on a random basis. QUICKTIME PRODUCT FEEDBACK
Since you aren't seeking further advice here is what I have observed. Not being a regular WMV file user, I had to create my own sample file to test—a WMV 9 file containing WMV3 compressed video and WMA2 compressed audio. Since I normally use QT 7 as my primary media player, I also stored the WMV data in its partially decompressed form in an MOV file container to avoid pre-playback delays in "classic" player routines and also provide a secondary playback test of MOV wrapped content. These files play as follows using the Flip4Mac component/player support and uncoded URL uploads:
QT 7.6.6 "Open File" - both files play correctly.
QT 7.6.6 "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
QT X.1 "Open File" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file plays video without audio.
QT X.1 "Open Location" - WMV file appears to open but plays with "black" screen and no audio. MOV file plays video without audio.
VLC "Open File" - WMV plays correctly. MOV file doesn't open,
VLC "Open URL" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file appears to open but nothing plays.
MPEG Streamclip "Open File" - both files play correctly.
MPEG Streamclip "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
GarageBand - WMV file will not import but MOV file does.
iTunes - WMV file will not import. MOV file container is accepted but as soon as iTuness sees the compression formats, it aborts import.
Safari - WMV file URL auto-downloads and playes in the QT X.1 Player. The MOV file URL opens and plays in Safari.
As you can see from these results the files do play but are subject to many different constrints based on old/new video technology support, independent QT subsets and/or container trapping constraints. In short, individual user results will depend on presence/absence of component support, actual compression formats, file container, application being used, and how the application is being used. Unfortunately, most users here can't or won't provide the prerequisite information or a sample file for independent examination. This makes it next to impossible to give advice in these matters or categorize the specific nature of the problem.

  • QT10.1 will not open .wmv file after upgrade to 10.7.4

Hi Qt 10.1 will no longer open .wmv files after upgrading to 10.7.4.  I have the latest version of flip for mac.  They will opwn in QT7 pro but does anybody have a fix for this problem at all?  Thanks in advance.

I'm having the same issue, but do not find a 3ivx codec in the mentioned QT folder.  I do, however, have these codecs listed in that folder:
    AppleGVAHW.component
    ApplePiletVideo.component
    AppleProResDecoder.component
    AppleVAH264HW.component
    QuartzComposer.component
    QuickTime3GPP.component
    QuickTimeComponents.component
    QuickTimeFireWireDV.component
    QuickTimeH264.component
    QuickTimeIIDCDigitizer.component
    QuickTimeImporters.component
    QuickTimeMPEG.component
    QuickTimeMPEG2.component
    QuickTimeMPEG4.component
    QuickTimeStreaming.component
    QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component
    QuickTimeVR.component
Could ANY of these be causing my wmv files (or my Flip4Mac) to be corrupt and unable to work?  I appreciate any insight you may have.

  • Can't play .wmv files in Quicktime 7?

I used to be able to play a library of .wmv files in Quicktime with no problems but all the sudden, I received an error message saying, "can't play this movie". They are only short 1-2 minute clips.
I successfully downloaded the most recent version of Quicktime from Apple's site but that didn't help.
    Can you help? Thanks, Samattjack

QuickTime has never even opened Windows Media Player formats without third party software help:
http://flip4mac.com is that software and any issues can only be resolved by them, not Apple.
    Not a Quicktime software issue.

  • Convert WMV files to MPEG  and/or  get Quicktime plug-in for WMV and AVI

    Hi Apple experts,
I need to convert some WMV files to MPEG format or something that will play natively on a Mac in QuickTime or iTunes.
I was advised that the VLC app that will convert WMV to MPEG4?... but the page at the URL below indicates that this version of VLC is a player and does not say anything about converting WMV to MPEG...
    http://vlc-download.com/download-vlc/?gclid=COrY_NKghKYCFQN7gwoduQy4qA
I would like to convert WMV files to MPEG so they will play in QuickTime or in iTunes on a Mac by just double-clicking them... for family members with Macs like me.
I am working on a PC where I am right now, but I have Macs at home and at work. I am on a PC for the time being at a friends place and I've produced a few .wmv files in Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. (Sorry Steve, it's just for a test).
QuickTime will not play WMV files, nor AVI files, but it indicates that it can use a plug-in to do so, but the QuickTime webpage for plug-ins that it takes me to doesn't have any plug-ins for WMV or AVI format files.
Of course the Windows Media Player plays the WMV and AVI files, but is there also a way to make them play in QuickTime or iTunes besides converting them?
    Thanks so much,

    Hi QTKirk,
I would like to be able to just give my family these files on a CD for high-res viewing on a computer, in addition to the DVDs that I have made for their TVs.
Since I don't control what they install on their computers, they don't necessarily have Flip4Mac on their Macs like I do... I just want them to be able to play MPEGs from a file on a CD or on their hard drives by simply double-clicking them.
After working with the recommended VLC player that also allegedly converts WMV files to MPEGs, for 8 hours, I have a result with the 7th attempt that mimics the worst kind of modern digital art that I've ever seen... I wish I could plug in the screenshot of the MPEG video that VLC produced... completely useless garbage.
Are there any other suggestions for a converter that simply handles converting WMV to any kind of MPEG file?
FFE was going to be the one that I tried until I read a post about VLC... that turned out to be a waste of 8 hours of sleepless time.

I have checked using the plugin mgr that it is installed and enabled, but firefox still will not open .wmv files - It still brings up a window asking if I want to use Win Media Player to open the file.

  • Windows bad image in Vista playing wmv file error

I have created a multimedia file with movieclips and audio. The file plays perfectly on XP2 and XP3 machines. However I have one Vista machine which reports a bad image error when clicking the play button for the movie. This error will display after three attempts after which the file will play without problem. The file embedded in Acrobat 8 is a WMV file.
The error message is as follows: Exception processing image

The vista laptop is the one we use to demo files so it would be great to establish what the problem is. Do not have access to another vista machine to compare.
    Many thanks

I tried the 8.1.2. upgrade but for some reason it made no difference...however installing Acrobat 9 Reader helped and cleared the error. This is a little disturbing because companies are not as ready to install updates (some are still using Acro 5) so it is difficult to acertain what the receiver is seeing. But yes 9 fixed the problem.

  • HT3775 Quicktime no longer plays wmv files after recent update

I ended up on the phone with an Apple iPhoto expert after scheduling an appointment online (go to Apple support). He spent an hour or so diagnosing my particular problem and was able to fix it. I can once again view all my mov files in iPhoto. Since every computer is different, you might want to try that route. He was able to view my computer screen and direct me to do different things.

  • Help needed in creating WMV File

Greetings...I have been given a 10:30 Beta copy of a project that needs to be converted into a .wmv file. I did not edit this project in FCP, however, it is a FCP edited project and still exists as a FCP project on another Mac Powerbook. It was just exported onto to Beta tape for TV playback purposes.
The project needs to be converted to a .wmv and this is a new process for me. I've consulted my work books but am not quite sure as to the process. Do I save the project as a QuickTime Movie and then launch Compressor and import it? If so, I am in need of some direction as this is a new process to be learned...Are there any links/tutorials available that can guide me?
    Thank you.
    Thom

    Thanks for the Reply,
I have been in touch with Craig over the last few days. The strange thing to me is that I use Sorenson Squeeze on the same system (with the WMV settings all exactly the same as I had set in Compressor) and the job completes 100% with no problems.
As I told Craig at F4M, I don't think this is a F4M issue. Also, other jobs I submit via Compressor (ie, to .m2v for DVD authoring) work fine.

  • Using a *.wmv file to make a home video playable in DVD players?

    Hello all,
I have a project where I need to take a slide show made in Windows Movie Maker (.wmv file extension), burn it to a CD and make it play in a DVD Player. I attempted just making a VCD on a Windows XP laptop, but it wouldn't play in the DVD Player.
So, can iDVD '08 help me out with this? I have a Mac Mini, but I'm not very familiar with it yet (bought it just a few months ago).
For clarification, what I need to do with this wmv slide show is burn it to a CD that can be played in a DVD player and I'm wondering if iDVD can do this for me. Already attempted making a VCD on a Windows XP laptop.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks!

    Hi
She can't play it on her PC, nor can I at home.
Ussually it's a DVD player software matter. Windows Media Player is not intended for DVD playing. Did you use it when it failed? Try with the free and cross plataform VLC Player.

  • Using a .WMV file in DVD Studio Pro

    Hello All,
I'm so dangerously close to having this whole thing down, that the challenges are becoming excrutiatingly painful.
    I've completed my edit.
I've exported my FCP edit to Quicktime.
    I've downloaded Flip4Mac
I've exported a version of the FCP to a WMV file format.
Now I want to import both assets (QT and WMV) to DVD Studio Pro. I'm trying to make it so there are two seperate versions on the DVD.
As I attempt to link a button to the WMV file, I get the rainbow wheel turning, and it never stops.
So, I guess there are a few questions:
    1. How can I force the rainbow wheel to quit. Until now, I've just shutoff the computer (not a good idea).
    2. Is it possible to combine the QT and WMV files on the same DVD?
    3. Am I totally confused?
    Thanks.
