Stupidly Bad OS Problem With MBP

I know, it was an incredibly stupid thing to do but I moved a file called 'SKPlugins' out of the core services folder and put it in the trash!! now the dock doesn't load, the side bar doesn't load and worst of all.. drop and drag doesn't load so I can't drag the folder out of the trash and back the the core services!! can anyone suggest anything that could work? is there a way to hook my mbp to a pc as a hard drive and drag it back from there??
Cheers,
James

Try this:
Boot the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white print. When the startup completes you will see a command line prompt with a white block cursor. Enter the following command lines pressing return after each:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /Users/yourusername
ls -l .Trash
Verify that the folder (SKPlugins is a folder not a file) is still in the Trash. It should be listed after the last command issued above. If so continue as follows:
mv .Trash/SKPlugins /System/Library/CoreServices
ls -l /System/Library/S*
The last command should verify that the folder has been moved from the Trash back to it's proper location.
At the prompt enter 'reboot' without quotes to restart the computer. I would repair permissions immediately.

  • Several Problems with MBP - How to get it serviced in UK?

    Hi,
I bought my Macbook Pro in April. I didn't get the extra 3 year Apple Care as I didn't think it was worth it.
When the MPB arrived, my first issue was noticeable instantly. In the top left hand corner of the screen, there are several pixels that seem to flicker. Now, with them being in the very top corner (right on the edge) I decided to ignore them. Also I was hooking the computer up to an external display and would use it with that pretty much all the time so It wasnt a biggie.
Just outside my 3 month complimentary Apple Care, a problem with what sounds like one of the fans arose. When the CPU was under load and the fans sped up, a rather irritating noise was coming from the computer. The noise sounds like one of the fans is catching something, and it produces a noise that resembles a hedge strimmer or some other garden tool. The noise gets louder as the fans speed up. Its very irritating and is not a normal operation sound - and i fear that the fan will eventually fail completely and then i'll have problems.
My third issue is the whine - which I understand Apple are solving by replacing the Logic Boards on affected systems?
So - about a month ago I contacted Apple support. The guy I spoke to was obviously from India and spoke bad English. I explained my issues - and he gave me three options to solve the problems.
    1. Lay out £279 for Apple Care
    2. Pay £35 for Telephone Support
    3. Take it to an Apple Store to get looked at.
The first option is a no go. I refuse to pay that amount of money. The second option, what use is that to me? He would take me through telephone support troubleshooting and come to the conclusion that what I told him is right and that they are all hardware faults. Third option, the Nearest Apple Store to me is 40miles away. Over an hours drive. I would need to take it in there, then leave it, and go back and collect it. This really is a pain in the *** because I do not drive and I work Monday-Friday 8-5.
Now, is there no way that I can just get Apple to send me a container to send my MBP back to them in the mail and then them to send it back? I cannot believe that this is not the case.
I am in the UK by the way.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

apple is supposed to be able to deliver boxes to be sent to the repair depot i believe, i doubt the UK is left in the dark on this issue. any problems you have with your MBP should never be ignored, since its likely they could get much much worse. regardless of whether or not your phone support is expired, your warranty is still valid, and you can arrange a pickup if you feel travelling all the way to your nearest apple dealer is too inconvenient. they cant refuse pick up service, because thats one of the things promised to you by apple.
one thing to note, in the time it takes for apple to repair your unit, they extend the warranty by that much time. i checked in the warranty booklet that came with my computer.

  • Problems with MBP late 2009 + Dell U2711 + DVI Dual-Link

    Hi!
I'm new to Apple Communities. I've been using for quite a long time my MBP with my Dell U2711 monitor. Sometimes it works perfect. But other times, just after bootup or reasume the display doesn't work properly.
Some times it doesn't detect the signal of the MBP and doesn't start.
Other times it displays the right image but with something like "noise" in every color.
The only solution I found is to turn off and on the display or if it doesn't start, forcing it touching the menu button to start up. If it appears noise and I just change the source and put it back again it works fine.
It has only happened me with this computer. I have also used it with a custom made computer with a GTX280 and never had a problem with it.
I tried to boot up with the 2 different graphics cards my MBP has, and with both I have the problem. I even had the problem using the "normal" DVI adapter. I suppose it must be something of the computer firmware. Some times, if I restart the computer using only the U2711 display. The bootup logo and loading is displayed fine. But when it displays the login window the noise starts.
I've always had this problem. It isn't something that started happening one day. I even reinstalled Mac OS X.
I'ts really strange and I found nobody who has the same problem. I hope someone has a solution.
If someone doesn't understand what I call "noise", please, tell me and I will post a photo of it.
Thanks in advance (and sorry for my English)

Double posting. Everyone, ignore this here and follow that one instead.

  • Problems With MBP Retina Display late '13

I Have some problems with my mbp:
-I Can't use bluetooth because wifi stop work, it's impossible to surf the internet.
-Raw and Jpeg preview too slow.
-Mail problems every time I open it.
-Music stop when I use lightroom.
-I had send 4 times the computer to SAT and APPLE don't give me a solution.
    Any recommendation.

thanks! yeah i recorded it so i hope they will take the problem more seriously.
Unfortunately i don't have an applecare protection plan, but i hope that the proof that i've been in an apple store for the same issue already in april will help me somehow.
I also think that when i touch with my hand both chassis and display i make some connection working again. Maybe i'm the radioactive man, or i have some special powers...or for the first time time in my life i bought a bugged apple product. But i think is more possible one of the first two options!

  • "Invalid password" intermittent problem with MBP Snow Leopard Netgear

This is driving me mad, please help.
My MacbookPro (new, Sept '10, Snow Leopard) has intermittent connection problems with my Netgear wireless-N 300 router. Everything works fine a lot of the time. I put the computer to sleep, and next time I open it, I bite my nails to see if it will connect or not. Today, it's not. And there's no logical reason why. What's maddening is that I get an Airport "Invalid Password" error when trying to connect, when I'm using the right password and it has connected automatically before. I will sometimes have success by restarting the computer, or by restarting the computer AND the modem, or by resetting the modem. But sometimes I don't have that success, and today is one of those days.
Now, I also have an older Macbook Pro (Mar '08, Leopard) that NEVER has a problem connecting. So I know it's a Snow Leopard issue.
I have tried changing the channel in the router's wireless settings (including to Auto). I have tried deleting the keychain item for the router's wireless. I still get the "Invalid Password" error.
The irony is that the whole time, I'm updating the router via the old MBP which has no problems with ANY of the settings. That's what I'm writing this on. But I need the other computer to get online. It's getting ridiculous.
I CAN connect by connecting an Ethernet cable to the router, but that kind of defeats the purpose of going wireless.
Please help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

First log into your router and make sure it is up to the current time and maybe sync it to a Time Server. Then on your Mac open System Preferences->Network. At the top of the pane is the "Location" drop-down. Use that drop-down to make a new custom Location calling it whatever you like. Then at the bottom Network pane click on the 'Apply' button to save this new custom Location you made. Then use the Network pane to rejoin your wireless network.
Also in System preferences->Date & time and make sure it is set to your current living Location. Plus open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. In this program first click on the menu item "Keychain Access" and select "Keychain First Aid". Then go to the entry for you wireless network and delete it. Then the wireless connection should ask you again to save the password, only once, hopefully.
    Good Luck.

  • Problem with MBP-Air.Ext.-Canon Printer

Hello... I recently encountered a problem with my PIXMA MP800 while trying to scan... I use a Mac Book Pro with an airport extreme base, to which the printer is conected via USB... There is no way I can scan a document while maintaining this connection... The way I solved the problem was by connecting the printer directly to the computer (via USB) and skip the airport extreme base...
My question is, is there someway around this problem, just so I do not have to change connections every time I want to scan a document?...
Mac Book Pro 2.16 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have a Pixma 500 and I was never able to scan wirelessly. I can print through the Airport Extreme but not scan. I ran into problems when I reinstalled my OS now I cannot even print wirelessly. I have contacted Canon a few times about this and I got the same generic reply. Apple Care is your best option for assistance with printing wirelessly, I do not think it will scan wirelessly at all. So yeah it is a pain to have to connect to the printer just to scan. One other option you have is to use a USB drive if you have another PC connected to the base station and just copy the files to the USB drive and then scan through the PC by the base station. That way at least you don't have to lug your laptop around. Good Luck and post back if you figure anything out!

  • Serious Problem with MBP

I recently (3 Weeks ago) bought a MBP 15.4" 2.0 Ghz. I installed 2 gigs of OCZ ram clocked at 667mhz. About two days ago, I installed a 120gb Segate hd. I realize now that it would have been much safer and simpler to take it to an Authorized dealer, but that's hindsight. After installing the HD, I spent the better part of two days installing boot camp + a brand new copy of Windows XP ($217 with tax yikes!). After failing a number of times, I completely erased the entire HD, and started over, only to have it work this time. After I tried migrating my old user from my first drive, my Mac OSX started behaving... abnormally. Simple operations would freeze up, leaving me no choice but to hard boot the laptop. I reinstalled Mac OSX, this time NOT trying to combine the old + new user. I simply used the old user as my new, and encountered no problems. Windows, on the other hand, operated very normally, even after I completely reinstalled the Mac partition, and would still boot up when asked. My windows partition is FAT32, so I can keep my iPod up to date, and still modify the files from the mac side. I copied most of my music from my old hard drive to the Windows side, and thats when things went awry. The copy operation "Quit Unexpectedly", and after a reboot, any atempt to retry the copy would result in a message saying "One or more files are being used by another application" Trying to delete them personally results in the same message. I don't want to go through 6,567 of those messages to delete them. That and my MBP beeps at random intervals, even with the sound turned all the way down. An "information box" will also appear at random intervals next to my mouse, and stay on the screen for 5 seconds. I really don't know what to do, I just reinstalled it today. It works, but somethings I need don't work, and the MBP is behaving really wierd. I haven't seen anything like this, and the Windows side is doing just fine. Thanks in advance for all the help. (Oh, and I don't need five people to tell me that I shouldn't have installed Windows, I need it for one of my computer courses. I also don't need to hear five times that I should have gotted an Apple certified tech to install the hard drive for me. I know. It was very stupid of me.)
    - Rich

    Rich,
It doesn't sound like you totally messed up. What it sounds like is that you have a bad block (or two) on the new HD. This is common, and no cause for alarm, but it does mean that you should "zero" the drive to map any of these bad blocks out before installing any software, Mac or Windows.
Another possibility might be a bad connection on the SATA bus. Are you quite certain that you didn't pinch, kink, or otherwise damage any cabling? Is the SATA cable connected well to the HD and its connection on the logic board? Are you sure?
I recommend that you start over (yes, yet again), but this time choose the drive in Disk Utility (not the named volume that you will see indented underneath), then choose the "Zero Out Data" option from the dialogue that will appear when you click the "Security Options..." button. Confirm your choice to dismiss this dialogue, then click "Erase."
This process might take as long as an hour (or maybe more), but it will map out any bad blocks. Once the process is complete, you can reinstall OS X, use Bootcamp to re-partition your drive, etc.

  • Bluetooth problem with MBP after installing 10.6.8

    hi there,
my one is a mbp mid 2010 model. i've bought it on this february and it was running like a charm. but from yesterday, the bluetooth stopped working. there is a thunder sign over the bluetooth icon and if i click on it, it says "bluetooth: not available".
i upgraded to 10.6.8 at 2/3 days ago, but after that upgrade i didn't check the bluetooth status, so i'm not sure if this problem is from the update or just a coincidence of having a hardware problem after getting the update.
i've spent 2 whole days looking for a solution of this problem and hav tried every possible solution provided on forums. i've tried restarting several times, resetting pram and smc, verifying and reparing disc permission etc........ but none of them works.
i hav a windows partition through bootcamp. i've reinstalled the windows today and there also, i cant find anything about bluetooth. i think, that is a clue for having a hardware issue. again, i've done apple hardware check (both of the short and the extended one) with both of the mac installation disk and the application disk, and none of them has shown any error. shouldn't it detect a hardware problem?
the bluetooth doesn't work also from the safe mood. in 'about this mac', at the place of bluetooth, it doesn't show any connected device.
i'm really confused here. i did not have this problem on 10.6.7. pls help me with it, as bluetooth is very essential for me, mostly for connecting on the internet.
    any help will be appriciated.

Just back everything up... pop the dvd in; erase the partition in disk utility and create a fresh install of Snow Leopard.... If it's not hardware related everything should work... Sometimes it's not the update itself but applications of various and diverse users that can cause the problems... It would be impossible for apple to know about all the various combinations of software that can cause these problems.... When in doubt... I back my stuff up and install a fresh copy... (ERASE THE PARTITION) not just install over mac osx again. But have you tried installing over your copy of osx yet? Its not like windows... you don't lose anything when you install OSX again... You only lose your data if you erase the partition!!

  • Hard drive problems with MBP OSX 10.8.5.

When I was uninstalling windows from my MBP, bootcamp crashed in the middle of uninstalling. Now I am missing half of my HD space. Now weve run Gparted off a flash drive and the hd space is still usable. But whatever weve tried we cant get it for use. Now, I know I should be able to wipe the HD clean completely and put an install disk in, but the problem is the Mac did not come with either. THe recovery partition included on the mac seems to be the thing doing the job, and I wasz able to make a backup of it. So, will that be an option? I put the recovery partiition onto a 16 GB Flash Drive and it boots from it, but I don't wanna do it until I get the ok from the community. XD or if they know a better solution xD.
And yes I did try stretching the partition under partitions in the disk utility, and that did not work.

If your USB drive is an installer, you certainly may use that.  I have done so myself.
Another option is to boot the MBP using the OPTION COMMAND R keys.  This will result in a display showing a spinning globe.  After you select your Internet connection, it will download the OS version that came with your MBP.  You do need a solid Internet connection for this download.
    Ciao.
Note that this is good only if your MBP came with Lion or Mt. Lion as the installed OS.

  • Display problems with MBP

    Hi all,
I've got a bit of a weird issue with my MBP (15 inch mid 2010 2.4 Intel Core i5, running OSX 10.8.2 (12C60)).
It started off about a week ago when variuos images (mainly web based) were being displayed upside down or mirrored or both. That seemed to correct itself somehow, but now I get various images that are out of focus or not displayed at all. I've done all the usual (restart, permissions etc) but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas or is it a trip to the genius bar?
    Cheers!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Problems with MBP - first HDD, then battery, now not powering on at all

My MBP is just over a year old (though I think the model itself may be from 2010; I bought it on clearance from a Best Buy).A couple of days ago it started behaving oddly - freezing constantly, then more and more to the point where I had to just shut it off. During one of these episodes, it came back with the flashing question mark folder. I chalked it up to the HDD failing and had Geek Squad replace it, though that in itself was an ordeal because the computer would not read any of the HDDs we tried. Finally found one it did read today, and I thought the problem was solved, until I brought it home.
The magsafe LED was green but not charging the battery. So I tried resetting the PRAM; nothing. Tried resetting the SMC and turned the computer back on. It came on (very slowly), and then turned off by itself. Now it's not booting on at all. For awhile the LED kept flashing between green and orange, now it's just green, but still will not turn on no matter what I do.
I don't really know what to do now. There isn't an Apple store near me, and the Geek Squad I took it to doesn't have an Apple section, either. I'm moving 18 hours away in 10 days, and I really need it working by then. But, I'm assuming the logic board is fried...

Figured so. I'm also wondering if it could be something as benign as the battery being dead? But considering all of this happened starting with the HDD, probably not. How much does a logic board replacement run, anyway?

  • Problems with MBP

First, I should say that I have always loved macs and have always pushed my friends and family to buy them.
Last August, I decided to finally buy the computer that I really wanted-- A MBP. I have the 15", 2.0 model with upgraded RAMM. I LOVED this computer at first-- it was so great.
But then, about a month after I got it, I noticed some problems. It developed the notorious Whine, it didn’t wake from sleep all of the time, it got REALLY hot, and most annoying, it was like the case was rubbing up against itself and creating wear marks just below the track pad. The wear marks have become huge and they are all over the bottom of the track pad, as well as a few close to the keyboard.
I brought it in to the Genius Bar, and called support, but they claimed that it was my own fault and that they couldn’t do anything.
First, I fail to see how any of this could be my fault, considering that I cared for this thing as if it were my own child-- I have a sleeve and bag for it, I NEVER wear any jewelry on my hands while using it, etc.
Now this morning I take it out of the case after walking to the library, and it is as if the entire case is warped! It won’t sit flat on the table! It didn’t hit anything, I never dropped it--it’s just warped.
Any advice from anyone out there?

  • Time Machine problems with MBP 2011

I've been having problems trying to back up my computer data to a hard drive using Time Machine. I've already set Time Machine up, connect my 500 GB Seagate hard drive (which says is specifically designed for Time Machine on the Mac) and press Start Backup Now. After I do that, the computer pulls out a progress bar, so I left it there and after a long time went to check the progress, but the machine said that it had 600 MB out of 320 GB to copy. Why is this? Also I try to do something because the computer seemed stuck, or frozen. So I had to do a hard shut down, and tried it again but the same thing happened. What can I do to finally back it up? I know the Hard drive is not a problem... please help me!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • PLEASE HELP! TONS of problems with MBP

Just recently my computer has been getting very poor battery life and is getting VERY hot. I have istat pro and it says that the battery's health is in the 70s and it keeps going down. Overall the computer is running slowly and very hot (about 160-170 degrees F). I'm not sure what I should do, but I definitely think i deserve a new battery -- the battery life is literally less than an hour and a half. Just a week ago it was 3 hours! This isn't the first time my computer has experienced problems, it doesn't go to sleep when i close the lid half the time either. I bring it to classes every day and usually it lasts the whole time (over 3 hours). Now it's really screwing up.
    Again:
-My computer is running extremely hot (60 degrees F ABOVE normal)
-It's battery health is in the 70s and the life is an hour and a half (even less)
-It doesn't sleep when closing the lid
-It's running slower and slower every day.
What do I tell apple? What can I expect them to do?

do what i said in your other post if your battery is over a year old have the apple store try a new battery in the macbook but be careful if you do not have the membership the guiness bar will charge you so ask before they look at it if they will charge you buy the battery you can always return it. but its difinitely the battery like i said in the other post i had the same problem 1st got it would run for 3-4 hrs then about 1-1 1/2 then nothing unplug the powercord nothing .the 1st sign was when i had it on my lap it burn so bad i had to unplug it and shut it down..so far i had this new battery for 1 month lets hope it keeps up again good luck!
