Stupidly low broadband speeds, please help.

I originally called BT about slow speeds on the 22nd of June, I told them that my Home Hub had been reset multiple times that week (i know this is to be avoided, but i wasn't at home at the time to stop it happening!) and so I told them my IP profile was the problem, and that I needed it reset. I was told they would do it within 48 hours and they would "get back to me". Well, they didn't. What followed was a series of "We will call you back at x:xx on y" which never happened, none of them. I always had to stay on top of them and constantly call them. Broken promises from the very beggining.
Now, I know fine well it doesn't take 7 DAYS to reset an ip profile but after constantly calling them back I've ran out of patience. Quite frankly all of this customer service has been terrible from the beggining when all that needed to be done was to reset my profile, something that should take several minutes, not days. I've now been told on 3 different occasions that my profile has been reset and I'd notice a difference within 4 hours. None of this has been true.
I'd appreciate if one of the mods could help me out here, as I'm at the end of my tether for speaking to CS India about this, they simply refuse to stick to their word.

Router stats are at the end of the post.
I read somewhere that the profile resets automatically after 5 days, but i called 6 days ago, so that doesn't seem to have fixed it either...
Thanks.

So I am not the only sufferer of the slow broadband from BT.  It appears that there are hundreds of us suffering with a poor connection and getting little or no resolution from BT.
Personally I wish I had never bothered taking the new homehub3 and vision box.  I should have cancelled my contract with BT and told them to put their routers and poor customer service where the sun doesn't shine, they might have got that right!!
But here I am stuck with a 12 month contract for a wireless router that cannot maintain a wireless connection.  I am now on router number 3, my line has been tested and doesn't have any interference. The speed into the socket in my porch achieves 8mb but somehow between that socket and the cable plugged directly into it and the BT homehub 3 my service plummets through the earths core and ends up in Australia!
To say I am cheesed off would be an understatement.  To write this post I have had to reconnect to the router 10 times!!!!!  What is the point of wireless when it doesn't work.
Customer Service have left me a voicemessage saying they will be contacting me in regards to my complaint letter and demand for compensation but have I heard anything, NO!!!
BT need to get their act together before they lose all of their customers, and be assured I am making a lot of noise about their lack of performance on every forum I am on.
BT you are going DOWN!!!!!!    Hopefully you'll find my wireless connection when you get there!

  • Very slow Broadband speed please help!

Hello to all, I have recently joined BT from Sky and I am due to have Bt infinity installed mid October so hopefully my issue will be resolved then, however since joining BT Broadband I have had appalling internet speeds averaging 0.3 mbps! I can’t even watch the BT help videos online!
My current BT broadband was completed on 11th September and I was told wait 3 days for the line to stabilise which I did with still speeds of 0.3 mbps. I re contacted BT after this time and was told to do all the usual checks which I did. To put you in the picture my router is connected to an extension socket in my lounge and my master socket is located on a window sill in my hall way.
I can’t connect my router to my master socket as I have no power there and it is impractical to do so due to the space on my windowsill.
I was then told that my IP profile or BRAS profile was low and would be looked into. This was and three days ago I was told that they had completed their work at the exchange and sthe peed should be improved. My line now has an IP profile of 0.42 which yes is an improvement but I know my line is capable of more from when I was with sky it was around 1mbps.
I was then told I would have to wait until after a 10 day period from when my line was activated and then call back if no
improvement - Today no change speeds are as follows:Download speedachieved during the test was - 0.36

obviously connecting to an extension socket is not ideal and as you cannot connect to test socket you cannot rule out problem with your internal wiring causing the poor speed
have you removed the bellwire from terminal 3 in all sockets?

  • Low Broadband speed = line fault?

    Hi,
We have had a very slow download speed since the high winds started last week (live in a rural area about 1 mile from exchange).
I have run through the BT Broadband speed wizard & not improved the speed.
    ADSL Speedtest results are:
    Download speed achieved - 194Kbps
                               Acceptable = 50-250Kbps
                               DSL 3424Kbps (downstream)
                                          448Kbps (upstream)
                               IP Profile = 250Kbps
Now, I don't know what it was before - but this appears to me to be pretty slow!
If I understand the notes correctly? for 3424Kbps we should be getting 600 to 7150Kbps throughput speed?
All I know, is that pages are taking an age to load...
Any thoughts on what to do next please?
PS After restarting the Hub 2.0, we got the following results:

  • Low broadband speed (narrowband)

On the 14th of January I lost my telephone service and obviously my broadband.
I telephoned the help line with my mobile phone  and after speaking with an Indian lady in India for 45 minutes she said she was going to run some tests and please would I not use the telephone or the broadband while she did it.  I informed her that I had said right at the beginning that my telephone and broadband was not working, se then said that she now had to pass me onto a different department!
I was put through to another lady this time in England who told me what the problem was in 2 minutes. Why can’t you have your call centre in this country so that the staff can understand the problem?
On Wednesday 19th January an engineer called to fix the telephone line and I can now use the land line telephone.
That evening I switched on my computer and the broadband was working but extremely slow, I called the broadband help line and they ran some tests and got me to do some things like re-cycling the router etc.
I borrowed a router (the same as mine) from my friend who lives 3 doors away, we plugged my router and then afterwards tried his straight into the master socket, we tried 2 different computers and 2 filters, all had the same symptoms broadband speed or 135 kb/s.
An engineer was sent out on the 1st of February and he said that he would not leave until it was fixed.  He left saying that I would have up to 11 MB/s within 24 hours.
    Today I have 250 KB/s
I have now spent in excess of 8 hours on the phone and I have not got anywhere.
Every time I phone the broadband help i am told that I have to wait another 24 to 48 hours for it to fix itself
It is now Saturday 6th February and my download speed is 144 kb/s
I have now been without broadband for 24 days
My line speed is 11 Mb/s but the download speed is capped at 250 kb/s (from the bt speed test)
How many more weeks do I have to wait - nobody at BT cares
I am a very unhapy non user.

If the password on the card which was shipped with the homehub doesn't work or the password page doesn't let you in, try and reset your home hub (Stick a pen into the little red button and press it) and then try what John says

  • Low broadband speeds, connection keeps dropping

Recently I have seen broadband speeds drop from about 11mb to about 2. this is coupled with the home hub 4 constantly dropping the connection and the orange power light flashing orange.
Bt have been here but claim no problem on the line.
I am starting to think this is related to the latest firmware upgrade. Is there anyway to roll back to test this theory. Or does anyone have any other suggestions.
    Thanks
    James

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
    Lines should look like this
19:11:29, 07 Nov. (2290101.460000) DSL noise margin: 7.00 dB upstream, 6.10 dB downstream
19:11:29, 07 Nov. (2290101.390000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 288 Kbps downstream
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Stupid airport... please help me

Ok so my internet connection *****, ten fold. I'm so frustrated by how low and crappy it is I'm ready to throw my MacBook across the room. My roommate gets excellent internet connection and my boyfriend gets pretty good internet, and all three of us live in the same basement. The one wireless router is upstairs, owned by my landlord, and I've guessed that there are about 7 computers running off of this one router. Is there an attachment of some kind that I can buy to boost me internet connection? If so... is it going to cost me an arm and a leg? I'm a college student and don't have much disposable income. Can someone please help me before I completely lose it! (I just lost my internet and had to re-write this post, I was fortunate enough that I thought to copy it, just in case, because I know my internet is so bad)

You can ask your landlord to re-position the wireless router so you can get a better signal from your room.

  • Sorry... stupid error-8 ..please help!

Hi my name is Ron and I'm an error-8-oholic.

Please help. I'm stupid... I need to be helped step by step. I've already tried entering all these codes into the firewall thing and it didn't do anything. I'm at a college with wireless internet access if that helps anything. I can't connet with my girlfriend on her PC laptop (with an attached video camera).

    Welcome to the Group.
What version of WIndows and what version or AIM ?
Has she allowed the application as an Exception through her XP or Vista Firewall ?
AIM 6.1 is best. (AIM 6.0/Triton is no use. AIM 5.9 is OK)

  • Problem Adjysting Clip Speed - Please Help

I have recently purchased this new Macbook and am finding it difficult to get my head around some of the features of iMovie. I am familiar with older versions. My problem is as follows:-
I am editing a video using clips taken with the video setting of a regular camera, not camcorder. The clip are in MPEG-4 formats. I can import and split the clips with out a problem.
However when it comes to adjusting the speed whenever I drag my cursor over the clips the play head follows. When I double click the clip as mentioned in the online tutorials instead of receiving a pop up window my play head begins to play the clip.
Can any iMovie guru please help me with my problem. It would be much appreciated.
Oh and if you are explaining please make your response as user friendly as possible. Still only getting to grips with this version.
    Thanks for your help!!!

You should run software update and get version 7.1.4 and the newer versions of QuickTIme.
However, changing clip speed is not a feature of iMovie 08. You need iMovie 09 for that.

Hi have come here as a last resort , i have been a bt internet/broadband user for over 10 years have had broadband for a long time , we often in our house have me playing games online on the pc , the kids have the xbox 360 and the mrs will have the ipad all hooked up at the same time with no problems ,
then friday the broadband dropped and we had a orange flashing light ,
it came back on about 5 mins later and ever since it is very very slow , i have tryed resteing and rebooting the router , it connects to the internet just fine but everything is running ar a snails pace , tryed calling them which is a nightmare trying to explaine to a call center guy , they told me to hang up for a line test and they would call me back and havnt bothered
i have done the line test online it it comes back as ok , we have noticed some nose on the phone line from today
can anyone please give me some advice?

have phoned them 4 times now (2 times on 151) and they ensure me they have tested the line and i have no fault , they set up remote asstent and the guy did a soft restart of my hub which seemed to work , he then tryed to get me a better d/l speed but it whet back to a poor one again , so he again did a soft restart and i now get this:

i was led to belive that bt staff would help me if i posted here hence why i did so but even this is looking like a total waste of my time , (no dissrepect to you imjolly for your help)

  • Huge drop in broadband speeds, need help!

For the past 3 days my speeds have gone from a very stable 7.0mb to a totally unusable 0.95mb and even as low as 0.65mb. I have tried everything I can think of to rectify this but to no avail. Connected by ethernet cable to Hub. No other programs or Backup are running and all other wireless devices have been disabled.
The HH3 is connected to the master socket and I have taken off the faceplate and plugged it into the test socket. I have changed my adsl filter and performed a manual reset of the Hub. Line test is normal only a slight hum can be heard (cordless phone). I have checked out my exchange (NISTF) and it is not reporting any problems. My stats are posted below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • (South wales) Very bad Broadband Speed, please he...

Hi there guys.  First off i tryed reading the stickies and didnt find anything that helped me.
Ill explain whats going on.  Ive only been with Bt for about 2 months, the told me that i can get 3.Mbps on my Line, so  ofc i have 2.5 but only 0.5 of a meg wasnt a big deal to me.  3 days ago there was a problem in our living area and was confrimed by the Bt BB service status that i phoned and they said that the problem would be resovled in 2 hours, after about 4 hours we phoned again and said there were no further problems.
BUT since then (3 days) broadband has be so very very slow its honestly unbelieveable, last time i did a speed test at speedtest.net, i was 0.16 Download (page took 2 mins to load literally) and its been between 0.16 - 0.43 the fastest ive seen it go.  Ive also not changed anything in my home.
Ive got the 2.0 hub pluged directly into the master socket, i dont have sky tv or other phones around the house to interfere.  My router is siting on a small table on its own, no where near cheap cordless phones(only got the hub phone) no speakers or anything.  this is also my 2nd hub
heres a copy paste job from the hub manager.

    Hi,
First thing your router has not been on long 13 mins on your post, 3 days it will take to get up to speed, however you should see a increase in 24 hrs if no other issues but I have feeling you do have a problem, run a speed test do it three times every hour or so.  Your first test shows it is slow and at that point it will not get any faster really. Have you tried the noise line test.
Try this link this will give you some idea on the speed you will get, if all was perfect, you should also take perhaps 1mbps off, to have a reasonable estimate.http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php.
Just enter your line annuation it is 56.5.
Also give the mods a post here with a link to this thread, they will need your name and number, [email protected]

  • Slow speed, please help

Hi, I have has problems with my line disconnecting due to an faulty extension cable which I have removed but my internet is still slow.
    My ADSL Stats are:
    My Speed Test Result
    My Line Speed Check
Is there anything that can done to increase the speed of my internet?
    Thanks, Alex

there is something causing a problem with your connection as your earlier posts you had an attenuation of 49.4 but now up to 58.  this should be more or les constant with a change when you move to 21CN.
are you connected direct to the test socket via a filter (preferably new one)?  what other changes did you make apart from doing away with extension cable?
