Stutter/Jitter in DVDs

I've noticed a stutter or jitter in the movies on DVDs I've created using iDVD 08. The effect is as if some frames had been periodically dropped throughout the entire movie. The problem does not exist in the original iMovie 08 video or the video viewed in the Media Browser. The DVD stutter is visible on two different DVD players and the Apple DVD player application, so I believe the problem is an artifact of iDVD 08 or the settings I've selected. I double-checked the iDVD preferences, and I am using NTSC, Professional Quality settings.
I reviewed the other "stutter" problems mentioned in this forum, but none seem to have quite the same symptoms as mine. The fact that others are complaining about the problem implies the problem is with my set up, but I've not been able to identify the culprit yet. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Will

Some additional info on the issue: the stutter/jitter appears to occur only when the large.m4v file from the media browser is converted to another format. The two cases I've noticed are: a) burning a DVD with iDVD 08 (.m4v to MPEG2); b) importing the large.m4v file into iMovie HD (.m4v to DV I believe). The stutter/jitter doesn't occur when the medium.m4v is converted. The stutter/jitter doesn't occur when I play the large.m4v file with QuickTime Player, so I presume large.m4v is itself OK.
Does iDVD 08 and iMovie HD use QuickTime to perform the conversion? Could I have a QuickTime setting that is somehow causing this problem? If so, I would have expected to see the stutter/jitter after converting the medium.m4v file also, but for some reason it plays properly.

  • Still Frames Exported from Final Cut Jitter in DVD Studio Pro

I'm on a Titanium Powerbook G4. I use Final Cut 3.0 and DVD Studio Pro 1.5. Within my film I have several 15 second clips that are each a compilation of a single frame repeated many times so as to get the look of a still picture on the screen. I exported my film as a F.C.P. movie and when I watch it in Quicktime everything appears fine (as it does when I play it from within F.C.P.). However, when I author the DVD with Studio Pro (tried it w/ iDVD also and received the same unwanted result)those clips "jitter" or shake back and forth so I get a blurry image instead of a still, clear image like in F.C.P.
I burn the DVD w/ the internal combo drive on my Powerbook. I have never had an issue w/ any DVD that I have editied, authored or burned on this computer or w/ these programs.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Ryan

  • Stutter, jitter, whatever.

The real title of this post should be: "dang that FCP/h.264/5DII baloney!".
After having much trouble on FCP and being unable to resolve it, I've dusted off my copy of CS5 and started to learn it. Not transcoding is SWEET.
I'm aware some of this stuff I'm asking about has been talked to death, but I did look hard and am
not finding the specific solution I need.
I thought I knew this stuff, for the most part.
I've certainly done it successfully in the past, however, that was on a tower, FCP 7,
in an XDCAM network TV environment.
Now, using my own laptop and FCP 6.0.6 I am having the very devil of a time,
and FAILING utterly to understand the whys.
With the 5DII shooting 29.97, every transcode tool and flavor except one has failed dramatically to
produce first rate results when using FCP. Even the one that works is not perfect.
I've got a bad case of the jitters.
Some of the transcodes produce files that jitter.
Some produce files that play fine in the FCP Viewer but jitter once they are on the timeline.
Rendering just produces jittery rendered files.  The same holds true for CS5.
Tried Streamclip after trying Log and Transfer, or as I like to call it, shiftapple8.
The best FCP results have been with Prores 422HQ capture through shiftapple8 and XDCAM 1080P 30 VBR.
Even that is unsatisfactory in some CU pans.
So, using small words so I can understand, (pretend you're talking to your cat) could someone be so kind, please, as to provide a 'recipe'?
    As in:
Set your CS5 project up like this. Capture, project, timeline, all you consider critical.
    Why always helps.
    Transcode like this. Ditto.
The Mac is a 1st gen 17" unibody, maxed, 4g RAM, the drive is a Sonnet F2 twin ESATA to Expresscard34.
But while that makes a difference in edit and playback, it should not make a difference in rendered output.
    right?
May the thoughput be with you.
And what is up with this text editor!?

Sorry to bail on this. Bottom line is that the saga continues. Been busy, as you'll see.
Just as an aside, why is it an acceptable state of affairs that these pricey products are so damn touchy touchy touchy,
so damn buggy buggy buggy? Why are we, all of us, not continuously harassing the publishers to make them more robust, more
transparent, and to do more to help us when their dodgy products go badeep?
    Enough.
Here's where I am today, and let this be a lesson to all:
I was getting nowhere. I followed the (generously given) instructions I received here, to the letter. Repeatedly.
    Nothing changed.
I cleaned up the laptop, bigtime. Nothing.
So I delved deeper into the vitality of my drives and RAM, and discovered that there were a whole lot of processes going on in the background
that I could not turn off even after deleting the app. Yes, you, Verizon. Among others.
Here's where I really went wrong: I listened to Apple, in the person of the manager at my local Apple store.
He recommended I start over. Backup, reinstall the OS, reinstall the NLE's (PP, FCP, MC).
    Desperate times...
Did it. As a result, I am in worse shape than ever. NOTHING WORKS.
    Lame #1:
PP (5) couldn't compile media owing to an unknown error. That's helpful, Adobe, thank you. ....And then suddenly it could.
Then it couldn't play video for more than a few and varying number of frames. Repaired permissions,
and now it plays. Working it. No doubt there are other probs, but as of today it is NOT stuttering. Yay.
    Lame #2:
Composer won't let me in because it thinks I'm trying to run two machines when I only own one license.
That should be easy to resolve if Avid ever responds.
Then we'll see what else is broken.
    Lame #3:
FCP won't open at all. I get a crazy error message telling me to check with the developer because the app may not be compatible with the OS.
Oh, Apple, please. There's just one little line of something or other missing or corrupt, on a fresh install, and this is what happens?
    Lame.
    Lame.
    Lame.
So if anyone out there feels my pain, please do share your wisdom on any or all of these issues.
If I sound pissed off, well, where would your head be after pounding it against this wall for over a week?
May the throughput be with you.

I have the Apple TV 2nd Generation. When watching video podcasts they stutter/jitter. I have tried adjusting settings on my TV, tried HD and SD videos with the same results. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you

  • Premiere - screen flicker when burning to DVD but no other formats

In adobe premiere i can share a video to MPEG or some other format perfectly (and you tube) but when i burn the same project to DVD i get frame flicker especially on fast moving image

I have now amended the field settings of the affected clips and burned a new DVD with each option - one version with reversed field applied to all affected clips and another with de-interleaved box checked (but no reverse field). Both look fine on preview or MPEG output but both still 'stutter' on the DVD (possibly worse in the case of de-interleaved option)
I can also confirm for definite that is is only time-stretched clips that are suffering this problem on the DVD - the other clips are all perfect

  • Slideshow "jitters" on tv

Would like to answer wife's question why certain images in a slideshow appear to jump and jitter when dvd is viewed on tv, but appear ok in dvdsp. all images come from digital still camera. i'm thinking image pattern characteristics that don't bother computer screen, but raise **** with tv playback.

The flickering you see is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of either very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text/ titling or scanned images with a great deal of detail in high contrast. (Note: It does no good to import images hugely larger than the necessary pixel dimensions of the video sequence. All it does is force FCP to work harder at interpolation.)
As the alternate fields play, the offending element is essentially being turned on/off creating the impression of a flicker. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays and/or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
    - (in FCP) field order>none
    - (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
    - (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
    - (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
    - (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
    - (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned or still images.
One neat trick is to use the selection tool to limit area you apply the vertical and/or gaussian blur to only the troublesome part rather than indiscriminately soften the entire thing.
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
    good luck.

  • Imovie - slowing down and speeding up videos?

Hi, i have the latest imovie and i'm having difficulty knowing how to speed my videos up and slow them down. I can't find the option to do that. On the older version of imovie, i clicked ' media '
but the one i got from ilife..i'm just not sure.
    Anybody know?

.. hmm, well.. nor sure about that 'better'.. I'm receiving a lot of 'help' mails esp, for that advice.. that JESDI app is a beast, and some people fail to mangle it
but, IF you manage to use it, the results are superb due to the pro-feature of 'frame blending', I excessively use it now for all my soccer-videos.. the iMovie slowmo often fails to avoid stutter on final DVDs.. with JESDI, I feel like a broadcast director

  • PPro CS6 Slow motion is jittery is there a fix

    Hi
When i slow down a clip it jitters and is not smooth.  Is there a fix for this?  I'm certain that this shouldn't happen.
    Thanks.

premiere has no real slow motion effect built into it. premiere does one of two things, it will repeat a frame or blend the two frames to fake a new original one. frame blend looks like ghosting, it may have worked on old tube tv's, but on todays lcd's its very noticeable. the same can be said of the repeat frame, on modern tv/lcds it will be noticed, which is the stutter/jitter you may be seeing.
so this depends on what the true frame rate of the archive footage is and it also depends on how much you are trying to slow down the footage, telling premiere to make up new fake frames. the file you have may report as 25, but very old camera's actually shot lower fps and the footage might have been thrown in a 25p project to be put on youtube etc. if the true fps of the archive footage is lower, you will notice the stutter/jitter even more.
as Ann says you can try After Effects, it does have some slow motion effects that do try to recreate a new frame not just repeat or blend frames.  however this has its faults too, and creates artifacts around the areas of motion. this can be just as annoying and distracting. there are tutorials on youtube etc, that show ways to try and hide the artifacts to clean up the footage. there are also third party plugins, i believe Twixtor Pro is the most popular but also expensive.

  • Music Stutters on slide transition

My slide shows' audio stutters between slides if I use any transition choice other than "None". They all play fine on the computer but stutter in the DVD player (it is a new DVD player).

Here is some advice about encoding and burning that I found in a post by SDMacUser, one of the very knowledgeable posters in this forum:
It is best Not to disturb the encoding process. Set your energy saving controls within system pref's to "never". This will speed things up as well.
Encoding durations depend heavily on the type and clock speed of the CPU as well as available HD space and memory. Keep in mind that the more apps or utilities one opens while encoding, the greater the chances for a multiplexing error somewhere along the line. So my recommendation is to not fuss with your mac while allowing for encoding to take place. Give it time to do its job. On my own mac system/s I set it to encode during night hours when I use the computer the least. And normally when I wake in the AM I'll have a completed Dvd. Yes, encoding can seem to take forever but it's best not to interrupt this process. A word to the wise, be patient. And lastly, use quality media like Verbatim and Maxell. Don't exceed 4x burn speeds (the lower the better in most cases). Many of us also burn from a disk image which is an even better idea since it allows you to test playback with apple's dvd player prior to committing your presentation to Dvd-R.
Btw, there is no better app for burning quality Dvd's (short of apple's DVDSP). Toast may be faster at times on certain types of files but not always better when it comes to quality.
    I hope this helps.

  • Jitter, stutter, or jerky playback on output

    Hi friends,
I've edited a video in Premiere Pro CS4 and it plays smoothly in the timeline. However, when I export it for DVD output, and then preview it in Encore, every minute or so, it will play one frame out of order. I don't know whether to describe this as a jitter, a stutter, or jerky playback. The preview is accurate: if I burn a DVD from Encore, the DVD will have the same glitches in playback. Again, Premiere plays everything fine.
The frame can be pulled from before or after the current point in the timeline. The first glitch occurs at 08s 15f and plays frames in the clip in this order: 1,2,3,4,17,6,7,8,9... Then it goes to 01:24:15 and partway into another clip does this:
    24s:14f
    24:15
    24:00
    24:01
    24:16
    25:02
    24:17 (back to normal)
Both of these clips with these symptoms have a lot of movement (people moving independently in the frame, plus camera movement), but there are other clips with nearly as much movement, and they do not have a problem.
The source footage is AVCHD 720 30p in a matching timeline. I do have some SD footage later in this timeline. This SD footage was captured to the computer via Firewire from a Canon Optura. It is "Scaled to Frame Size" and rendered in the timeline, and is causing zero problems. I exported using the Media Encoder. I am outputting to DVD using the MPEG2-DVD and NTSC Widescreen preset, with the aspect ratio changed from 16:9 to 4:3 and the quality set to 4.5.
I'm running Premiere Pro version 4.2.1 and Encore 4.0 on an Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 2.66 GHz with Windows 7 (64 bit), 4 GB RAM, a 5400 RPM 320 GB hard drive running the OS and the video files located on a USB 2.0 7200 RPM hard drive.
If any of you have ideas, I would be grateful.
    Thanks,
    Russ

I've been having this problem since installing Snow Leopard with QuickTime 10 way back when and it's caused me real problems with video rendering. I think it's a codec issue as my raw video files play back ok (H.264 codec), but when I export them and save as Photo jpeg or motion jpeg etc the playback has about 4 or 5 seconds of jerky playback near the beginning of the file.
I've just tried opening all my test files with QuickTime v7 and was staggered to see them all run perfectly. It is indeed very annoying.

  • DVD Stutter with Satellite L series

DVDs have been playing just fine for the past year, but last night they started to stutter, audio and video.
I've compacted the HD and freed up as much memory as possible by turning off AV etc, but this wasn't necessary before.
Any suggestions as to what's happened and how I can correct it are much appreciated.
    Alex

    What is your notebook model?
Did this stuttering start immediately? Maybe a option would be to clean the lens of the drive with a special lens cleaner for CD/DVD drives.
I suggest you to start with cleaning and if the problem persists then contact your local servicepartner to let your machine check by a toshiba technician.
    Cheers

  • Jitter problem after burning DVD from avi or mpeg2 that was exported from original timeline edit

When burning a DVD directly from the timeline in Elements 7, there is usually no problem, however, when first exporting it to an .avi or .mpeg2 file, and then putting that new file back into the timeline, and then burning that new file to a DVD, there is jitter or "strobing" when the subject in the video moves (when playing the DVD).
It's not an install, or re-install issue, because before I started with this new computer, the exact same thing happened with the last computer I was using.
    Thanks.

    Les,
I do not know the newer Pinnacle Studio products, but going back to 8 and 9, through 9.4.3, the workflow was based on DV-AVI, just like PrE is. Pinnacle might have changed over to MPEG-2 in later versions, but I just do not know, as I have not seen a version, since Studio 10 hit was such a disaster.
One of the problems when working from DVD-Video material is that it has already been compressed to MPEG-2, loosing a good bit of data, and also converting the material to GOP (Group of Pictures), so that individual Frames are not present any longer. This precludes Frame-accurate editing, unless that compressed material is converted to all I-frame. See this ARTICLE for some background on GOP. Then, upon Burn to Disk, that I-frame material is once more compressed (again) to MPEG-2 and GOP for use in a VOB container. This WILL cause degradation of the image, most noticeable where there is motion, either subject, or camera motion. Some NLE's offer what is referred to as "Smart Rendering." This can help in some areas. For portions of the footage, where no changes have been made, beyond just cuts, the material will NOT be Transcoded again to MPEG-2, but will be used, as-is. Note: add a Transition, or a Title, or a PiP, or any Effect, and that footage WILL be Transcoded, so the Smart Rendering aspect will be moot. Sony's Vegas has been recommended for Smart Rendering, but I have never used it. This might be worth investigating. Also, if Pinnacle Studio is working fine, you might want to consider using that program. I have 5 different NLE's on my workstation, and use each for specialized situations, though the vast majority of my editing is done in PrPro.
Regarding the existing DVD-Videos, much depends of the source. PrE can Import and work with 100% DVD-compliant (very important) VOB's. Unfortunately, most DVR's do not create 100% DVD-compliant discs. This is most often manifested in the first VOB, which will contain any Menus and navigation. This ARTICLE will give you some background on VOB's, which are Video Object "containers."
As you point out, there can be issues with the resulting MPEG-2, as it will span part of VOB 1, and then all remaining VOB's. With 100% DVD-compliant VOB's, there will be a perfect flow in the MPEG-2 that spans the multiple VOB's. When the VOB's are not 100% DVD-compliant, issues can arise.
Considering your DVR, it is likely that ripping is going to be the best workflow, as that will strip out the other material in the first VOB and should then gather the data for the spanned MPEG-2. The ultimate rip will be to a DV-AVI Type II file w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio. This is an older FAQ Entry from the Encore Forum, on ripping, but might have some useful tips. Note: this was for getting material from a DVD-Video for authoring to a new DVD in Encore, and not editing.
For non-commercial DVD-Video editing, I will use an A-D bridge and my DVD deck, and capture to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV Audio, and Import the resulting files into PrPro/PrE. This is exactly the same workflow that I use, with analog material, like VHS.
Also note that PrPro, a US$900 program did not get VOB Importing until CS4.2 (current version), while PrE has had it for some time now. Also, PrPro is a DV-AVI-based, I-frame, program, just like PrE, so no "Smart Rendering" there either. Same exact issues exist in "big-brother," PrPro.
    Most of all, good luck,
    Hunt

  • DVD Stutter and Stall

I am having a heck of a time making DVD’s that don’t stall or stutter, I guess I need a starting point.
What I do is stop frame capture 8mm and super8mm film, it plays on a special projecter and is passed through my Canon HD video camera to my computer.  It uses a program called CineCap for the capture and then the speed change.
    My computer uses the following

Thanks any help would be appreciated

Well I have tried the scaling down to SD and video looks goof but still full of jitters.
I have tried slowest possible burns on two different computers using ISO files and things are still very inconstant.
I am to the point of saying it is my Verbatim and Sony media is the problem.
in the world this week what are the best media to use?  I have been using -R for years but I am seeing that +R is better.  I would like to use printable disk if possible but a good nonprintable is better than a printable coaster, I already have a bunch of those
    Thanks

  • Disc issue: urgent! Artefacts and stutter in dvds.

    Dear All,
    I'd appreciate any advice.
I'm using idvd5 with a g5 powermac 1.8ghz on osx10.4. (Even though this is an older version of idvd, I post in this forum because I'm not sure the problem is unique to that version).
I've been burning copies of a 70-minute video onto dvd. For months this has been working fine.
All of sudden, the dvds burnt from this file have issues. The discs play fine for some or nearly all of their length and then they stutter, break-up, and have various colored artefact blocks appearing randomly on the screen. This happens at different points in each disc.
I don't know what this issue can be it. It is not a problem in the original quicktime movie from the DV, I've checked that. I have tried re-mastering the dvd without success. As far as I can tell it is not a problem with the dvd brand because the same issue occurs over several brands.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
If you haven't already, please also post your question/s in the appropriate forum / iDvd5 which is the version of iDvd you are apparently using. Your post might get the attention it deserves in that forum.
    Good luck on this.

  • SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro stutter during DVD playb

I've just recently installed the SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro into my PVR. I am connecting to my stereo system via the SPDIF connector using a coax cable. I've set, via AudioHQ, to pass through any Dobly Digital and DTS signals to my amp therefore the Audigy card is doing no decoding of any kind for digital signals.
The player I'm using is the latest VideoLAN player available (v0.8.4a) and have also set the player to use SPDIF output. When I try to playback my DVD's using VLC, the audio stutters constantly. I know it's not a DVD problem because when I switch the player back to normal stereo, the audio comes through fine.
My amp also detects the signal properly as it goes from Dolby Pro Logic to either Dolby Digital or DTS depending on which audio track I use from the DVD.
My system has a P4 3.0GHz CPU, GB RAM, 200GB HD (partitioned 0GB for OS, ~80GB for PVR recording, 0GB swap), with XP SP2. My swap is system managed and the OS has set it to ~.5GB.
Has anyone experienced the same or similar problem? Any help would be appreciated as I've banged my head against the wall all weekend long trying to figure this out.
    TIA...

    I have absolutely same problem.
    I use Audigy 2 Platinum.
    Operation System:
    Win XP Pro 32bit
    Driver:
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy series Driver v.2.8.000
    Applications:
    Creative MediaSource Player-Organizer v.3.30.2
Creative MediaSource Plugin for Remote Control v.2.30.02
I use 5. configurations of speakers.
When, I use remote controller to adjust volume.
Front left and right channels working correctly.
Center, Low Frequency and Back Left channels apply max high volume level and don t apply any other volume levels.
Back Right channel apply max low volume level and don t apply any others volume levels.

  • Slideshow frame rate when sent to iDVD is 29.97 rather than 25 (PAL)

When I send a slideshow to iDVD, it appears as NTSC 29.97fps rather than the required 25fps I need. This results in jerky movements as the app (which is set to 25fps) plays the movie. Are there any settings to correct this which I don't seem to have
