Stuttering/Choppy Playback of smallish .mov files

Hi all... I have been running QTPro 7.0.3 and before that 7.0.2 and both had severe problems running Quicktime movies off my hard drive without skipping, and stuttering.
These are files that are no more than 500MB and I've got 2GB of Apple RAM in my computer. My processor is a 1.25ghz, but this still shouldn't be happening. Right?
Please help -- it's really annoying!
-andrew

Same here. I have 3 solutions that work for me:
Use QuickTime Player 6.5.2 app (works fine with QT7.0.3)
Use MPlayer / ffmpeg
Use VLC player
My problem is not related to the audio settings, as 44,100 Hz is the only sample rate available in Audio/MIDI setup. It would be nice to have the QTP 7.0.3 Player work, since that's the default which opens when you double-click a movie.

  • Experiencing lots of audio stutters / choppy playback

With Adobe Flash Player in Youtube I am experiencing lots of audio stutters / choppy playback.  The problem started happening only recently and seems to be getting worse.  I am running Flash Player 11.2.202.208 in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP (SP3) with a pentium 4.  I cleared my internet history / cookies.  I did a disk clean up and defrag.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Flash Player, and also turning off hardware acceleration in Flash Player.  What else can I do?
    Thanks.

    Hi Daniel,
I think the best approach at this point would be to gather system information and open a new bug report at bugbase.adobe.com.  Could you take a look at the following FAQ and gather the info needed and open a new bug report?  Once opened, please post back here with the bug URL.
How do I troubleshoot and report problems with Flash Player Video?

  • Playback of same movie file in QT Pro is WAY better than iTunes??

Okay, so I have some .mov files that I have imported into iTunes. I know that iTunes uses Quicktime to play movies, but how come when I play a movie using QT, the picture is flawless & clear, but when I play it back in iTunes, it's all washed out, blocky, and choppy?? This happens on both my PB G4 & PM G5.....

So, setting aside the irregularities in the reporting of file size, is there anything I should be aware of now that I DID transcode a full days worth of files using DVCPRO50 as a DV file?
Not really. The DVCPRO50 video is the same whether in in the DV or the MOV file container.  Always rely on the Finder when judging the file size as it reflects the actual amount of space the data + unused space the container takes up on your drive. Just remember that the Finder reports in 2^10 magnitudes of storage as opposed to "true" decimal numbers.
Besides it being curious that all of my files have a .dv file type, I notice that they play back poorly in Final Cut Pro.  They seem to be hitting the processor with a double-whammy.
Not sure what you are comparing to here. Remember DVCPRO50 has twice the data rate of DVCPRO25/DV25 and half the data rate of a DV100 codec. Playback, of course, is related to dropped frames which depends on the CPU power of your system, as well as, the number and type of procedures that are simultaneously active/sharing the CPU(s). Also remember that DVCPRO50 is not a delivery-distribution compression format and is not normally used for the playback of content. It is, instead, a source/editing/archiving format for the retention of optimum quality at the expense of increased data rate/file size.
Any other potential gotchyas that I should be terrified about as I edit this video, export it, and prep it to go back on a DVD?
Again, not really. Depending on the sourcing of your content and the original color space, it may or may not be the most suitable compression format but is not likely to do harm either at an amateur/prosumer work flow level (which is the category I would use to describe my typical projects). As long as you have sufficient file space and can be satisfied with the final result, you should be fine.

  • Playback artifacts with MOV files from GH3

I have successfully played and edited MOV files from GH3 on this computer, but I suddenly (End of August) started having rendering artifacts in preview, after rendering in the timeline monitor, and on export.  I've tried several different MOV files with the same issue.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime.  When I first open quicktime after an installation, it plays the source files cleanly. But after I run Premiere Pro, I can't get clean playback in either PP or QT.  I've disabled the Nvidia Drivers for the GeForve GTX770 video card and still get the artifacts.
Any ideas about what might be going on?

Thank you so much for your reply.
Yes, I have CUDA installed.  I see the artifacts in the source monitor as well as the timeline monitor.  I have tried exporting in several formats and the artifacts appear randomly in all outputs.  I can get a clean export of the same files and projects from my laptop - HP Zbook.
Quicktime Player also displays the artifacts, but when I uninstall and reinstall Quicktime the display is clear until I try to edit again in Premiere. Then the artifacts start to appear randomly in Quicktime Player as well.

  • Stuttering, choppy playback? What gives?

Okay, I just got home with my new G5. I'm stoked. I hook up my external drive with my video clips. Last night I'm happy as a clam and playing with video footage... this morning I'm ****** off and frustrated because now FCP is playing everying choppy.
If I wanted this kind of performance I would have stayed with a Mac Mini.
What the heck? Help please before pack up the G5 and take it back to the store.

Sorry for my frustration showing, but with my post dropping to the second page of the forum I didn't want it getting lost in the shuffle. < </div>
Right. You'll notice all the newbies want answers right now. We're all volunteers. We handle what we can when our jobs and lives permit time to pay attention to the forums. You can often find answers in your manuals faster than we can post options.
The clips in the browser are not rendered. < </div>
You must render them for them to play in the native codec you have chosen for your sequence. iMovie uses DVstream which is not a realtime option in FCP.
I'm still on the learning curve of FCP so I don't know if I'm able to edit a clip in the timeline or how. < </div>
You cannot expect this forum to be a substitute for the 2000 pages of manuals you received with the applications. FCP is really complicated and deep and it takes a few months to get up to speed. That's m-o-n-t-h-s. We were all new to this application at one time or another. You've got a lot to learn and there is no shortcut. Start with the tutorials. They're very well done.
Rendered clips play fine on the Canvas but are still choppy and studder in the Viewer< </div>
Many things can display this symptom and many are only discernable if we can see your monitor. We can't. The most common newbie mistake is having thumbs visible on the sides on the Canvas window. That is, your Canvas viewer is set to be larger than the window in which it is contained. See the manual for how to adjust the size of the window and the playback screen.
My clips are on an external drive with about 97 GB available. < </div>
Good start, at lest we don't have to cover the basic capture scratch information.

  • No thumbnails or playback of MOV files in Adobe Bridge CC

    Hi
I recently downloaded and installed the latest version of Bridge from the Creative Cloud and I am unable to view thumbnails of .MOV files taken with an Apple iPhone5. I am able to open the file but there is no audio or video in the playback. Anyone else have similar issues? I am able to view these same files in Lightroom CC fine. I am using Windows 7 64-bit. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Only thing I can think of is there must have been some kind of mixup in
the transfer process. Here's what I did: I plugged her phone into our
Macbook Air at home and transferred her stills and movies off from her
camera (using iPhoto) to a connected portable hard drive. From there I
copied and pasted the files onto a removable thumb drive. From there I
brought them to work on my PC and copied them off to a portable hard drive
there. Seems to me the MOV files got lost in translation somehow. It's
possible I didn't do this correctly? I know with MY iPhone images and
movies I copied them directly from my phone onto my computer (PC) when it
showed up as a device in my device listing. It wanted to use iTunes for
this but I bypassed iTunes and did it the old fashioned way. These are the
files that I am able to view correctly on my PC at work in Bridge. So I
guess I need to recheck my workflow here.

  • Slow playback on Roku2 of MOV file after Adobe Premier Element Export

I have video files from a flash camcorder that encodes as MOV files.  This plays back fine on Roku2 using Roksbox and also on Real Player.
When I export a video file from Adobe Premiere Elements 4 the playback through Roksbox to Roku2 is horribly slow, with no audio.  The exported file from Adobe Premiere Elements plays fine on Real Player.
I have tried a host of different setting in Adobe (H264 and MPEG4 encoders, frame size, max bit rate) all to no avail.  Perhaps I am missing a critical setting.  I think the problem is somewhere in Adobe Premiere because I have been successful in using Full Video Converter Free 9 program to produce MPG4 files and they have played back fine through Roksbox and Roku2.
    Any suggestions very appreciated.

It would SEEM that your output file has "something" that does not match the file that works... so use the above to find out the details of the file that works, and set your PreEl output to match

  • Quicktime will not allow playback of .mov files (format DVCPRO HD)

    hi
i'm unable to play .mov files with quicktime application. i am using mac 10.4.11 and have the latest version of quicktime 7.4.5.
when i click the files the screen shows only white, and sometimes only audio, no images.
i am unsure if upgrading to quicktime pro would solve this, or if i need to download additional plug ins to support .mov playback.
i have opened to the movie inspector page and it does not tell me what plug in is needed - it lists the source, format, fps, playing fps (when available), data size, data rate, current time, duration and normal size.
how do i find which plug in i need?
    thanks for hopefully helping. sara

I actually found a link to download the missing components that you listed. i installed the package and it now shows under hard drive / library / quicktime but the HD files will still not play in Quicktime.
could this be because i do not have FCP?
I do not need to edit with the clips - merely to be able to playback to review.
    thanks sara

  • Choppy playback with mxf files...

Hello.  I have been working with Premiere Pro CS3 for quite sometime until just recently.  Then last week I installed Windows 7, then Premiere Pro CS5.5 along with various updates.  I usually work with DVCProHD (Panasonic), 720p, 60p.  I just started working on a new project and playback is very choppy, whether the footage is rendered or not.  Everything else works fine.  My computer (purchased in 2008) has Dual Intel Xeon 5150 (10.64 Ghz total), 4GB DDR2-667 FBDIMM RAM (4x1GB), and an ATI FireGL V3350 256MB PCIe Video Card.  I am using a dual monitor set up as I used to do with Premiere Pro CS3 and Windows XP (with no problem before I went to CS5.5).   I checked the settings for the Mecury Playback and it seems to show that it is selected but also grayed out (can't be changed to anything else).  Anyone have thoughts on why the choppy playback?  Even Premiere 6.0 never gave me choppy playback  like this.  Thanks in advance.

    > Exactly how much RAM is Premiere Pro CS5.5 able to use at maximum?
All of it. That's one of the reasons that we ported Premiere Pro to be 64-bit.
Are all files of all types giving you choppy playback, or just some? If it's only some files, then tell us as much as you can about those files.

  • PSE7: Quality of .mov file playback

I find the playback of .mov files to quite poor in PSE7 - it's rather "jittery" compared with QuickTime. This is a pain as more and more digicams save their movie files to .mov instead of .avi. Does anyone else notice this?
    I'm using PSE7 under Vista 64, 12GB RAM, Nvidia GTX280/1GB, Intel Core i7 Extreme.

With the convergence of cameras and camcorders I think Adobe needs to improve the handling of video in PSE. I'm hoping that PSE8 will address these issues but I'm not terribly optimistic given the focus that Adobe seems to be placing on the online component of PSE (which is not interesting to me - at least not the way it's been implemented thus far).
Some of the things I'd like to see:
Handle AVCHD clips. I know that these sort-of work (for some people at least) if you have Premiere Elements installed but PSE needs to handle these natively. I don't know of any digital asset management system that handles AVCHD well (just the little utils that come bundled with cameras/camcorders). I think there's a good opportunity for Adobe here.
    Improve .mov playback
Ability to define external viewers e.g., if I want to use Quicktime for .mov, PowerDVD for AVCHD
The video playback window should be non-modal.

  • .mov files displaying choppy/glitchy

Hi, I am having some trouble reviewing some clips in Premiere. The footage I was given has some 29 fps .mts files and some 60 fps .mov files (they were shot on different cameras). The .mts files look fine when I review them but when I play the .mov files they are extremely choppy and slow and often I get a "media pending" screen. Could someone help me out? Do I need to convert the .mov files to work with the .mts files? Is is just my laptop that is having trouble processing the files (and if so how do I fix this?)

I upgraded to the latest Premiere and the clips are loading a bit quicker but I'm still getting these
sort of glitches and a lot of 'media pending' messages. I've tried exporting pieces with the glitches as quicktime files just to see if that would remedy the problem but it doesn't fix anything.

  • FCE4.0.1 project file (.fcp) to .mov file. On playback.mov freezes

I have a 25 minute project which, in nested form, plays perfectly when it is in the project file format (.fcp) But once transcoded to .mov, which I do to make a self contained movie, it always, after conversion and on playback, freezes at one particular spot. To get over this I trashed the clip where the freeze happened and re imported it to the FCE Timeline. But, again, once transcoded to .mov, it froze. In exporting from .fcp I go this way : Open the projerct file>Export>QT. Then I give the file a name and pathway and waited while the process happened. Has anyone got any idea what is causing this problem? Or any way of getting that .fcp to an mp4 file without going via a .mov file. My end format for the client is an mp4 file but I do like to hold the project as a .mov master, if possible

First thing I would do is trash all the render files, then re-render the entire project, then try exporting again.
To trash the render files:  carefully delete all the files in ~/Final Cut Express Documents/Render Files  (unless you set up a different folder for render files)
To re-render the entire project, do both of the following:
Sequence > Render All > Both
Sequence > Render Only > Mixdown
Then save your project.  Then try exporting again.
BTW, how full is your hard drive?  A loaded hard drive can cause all sorts of gremlins with video.   Also, are you using the same hard drive for both your source media files *AND* as your export location?
ps.  You can export directly to MP4 by doing Export > Using QuickTime Conversion and choosing the appropriate settings (Format > MPEG4 & related options).
