Stuttering iMovie Ken Burn Stills in iDVD

I am going crazy, and wasting DVD discs, using iDVD to record iMovies with stills that have the Ken Burns effect. While the movie (book trailer, 212 Mb) looks great when played back in QuickTime, the Ken Burns stills stutter/jerk on the final DVD.
I finalize the project, then share as a QuickTime movie at H.256 compression. I am on a 17" MacBook Pro, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Mac OS 10.7.5.
Any help will really be appreciated!

How much free space do you have on your boot drive.
What speed did you burn at.
What brand disc are you using?
When working with iDVD is strongly recommended to have a minimum of 25 GB of free space.
Also follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD which will prevent burning coasters during testing:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

The people at the Apple store gave me a long, tedious workaround which is open Pages and bring in logo.  Export it as a PDF.  Open the PDF in Review and then "Save As" a jpg to the desktop and drag and drop into the imovie.  Even with this process, the text will sometimes shift.  When it works, it looks good, the logo comes up, then the second line fades in under it as part of the build and then the third line completes the graphic.  It would something this easy and straight forward would be easy.

I did the work around for the titles/jpg's in this short video.
I'll try your fix on the next one.  I have 22 short 3-5 minute videos to produce
and I'm on number 5.  This should save me a bunch of time.
It would appear that you know more than the guy at the Apple Store.
    Thank goodness for on-line forums.
I already tried fixing them individually as you suggested,
by going the crop/fit route.  However, even then,
the second in the series had always shifted.
The first and the third images lined up, but not number 2..
So  I brought in all the images, (1, 2 and 3).
and then the 2nd image again and put it in the third position
in the sequence on the time line. I deleted the "original" 2nd image.
So I had 1, 3, then 2.  Then I dragged and dropped the correct number two
into position two and it worked.  So what happens is that the
client logo appears, then that stays put and the next line dissolves in
and then the third dissolves in.  They are three separate titles, but they
are aligned perfectly so that they build as I dissolve between them.
I think the problem with the edit copy route would be that while
I could edit/copy the logo, I couldn't position text through the
iMovie text function exactly as it only gives you middle or bottom third etc.
Each title with the product name is positioned individually depending on
length and number of lines. By going through Pages, I can position the logo
and the text exactly.  Also, some logos are horizontal, while others
are square etc., so text positioning is crucial.Anyhow,
I'll try the global approach for the next one and see how that works.
Thanks very much for your insight and especially for your prompt reply.
I trust you're inside on this gorgeous July 4th because you're
making money on your computer. ;-)HarveyVOn 7/4/2011 3:57 PM, Apple Support Communities Updates wrote:

  • Ken Burns Effect in iDVD without iPhoto?

I was wondering if I can add the Ken Burns Effect in iDVD without having to make a slideshow in iPhoto and exporting.

This seems very inefficient to me. So in order to get motion slideshows, you have to export the slideshow from iPhoto as a .mov file (or iMovie which is even less easy), which takes quite a long time (at least 10min or so?) even on my MBP 2ghz and chewed up 500mb for 5 minutes. I have 17 slideshows I'd like to put in one iDVD project - processing them one by one in this way is a real pain in the neck.
Hopefully, one day Apple will either:
    - allow you to queue slideshow exporting in iPhoto; or preferably
    - accept motion slideshows is a core functionality for iDVD in the same way transitioning slideshows are. iDVD could just call on the iPhoto app behind the scenes to process the motion slideshows, if they really didn't want to move all that code into iDVD.

  • Where did Ken Burns stills pan controls go in iMovie HD ?

I haven't used iMovie in a year or so.  Just opened iHD & every still photoI drop into it gets automatically panned.  I can't find where the controls are to set where the Burns effect starts and stops.  Anybody care to help ?  Thanks !

Klaus may not be available right now, so thought I'd jump in.
Click on the panel labelled "Show Photo Settings" just above the tabs for Clips, Themes, Media etc. See the image below:
A small pop-up window will appear. Check the box marked "Ken Burns Effect" to activate the effect, then set the start and end points, and also the required duration.
    John
EDIT: Sorry, just realised I gave you instructions on how to set the Ken Burns Effect. If the box is checked, simply uncheck it to deactivate the effect.

  • Problem with burning Ken Burns effect on iDVD

When I preview a slideshow on iDVD after setting the theme to Ken Burns, it looks great. When I burn the project onto a DVD however the Ken Burns effect disappears and I'm left with static photos. What's going on?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where are you getting the KB theme? iPhoto? Is this in an iPhoto slideshow or are you selecting an album and using the Play button at the bottom? If you're using an album all you're sending to iDVD are the stills without any effects added by iPhoto.

  • In iMovie ken burns grayed-out

Ken Burns effect is grayed-out. How can I apply Ken Burns!

Although you cannot permanently remove the Ken Burns effect option, you can set your default to having it off.
You need to apply your settings to a particular photo and then the changes should be the new default.
Drag any photo into the timeline. Select 'show photo settings' and deselect KB effect and update that photo.
Close or hide photo settings. Click on something else. If you don't want the photo in your timeline, delete it.
When you open the 'show photo settings' again, your recent changes should be there.
If this process does not work for you, try deleting iMovie's preference file.
With iMovie closed, go to your Home file(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
    Reopen iMovie.

  • Video Slideshow Creation in iMovie (Ken Burns Effect)

I'm trying to create a slideshow video in iMovie. The process seemed pretty straight forward, and seemed to be going nicely. I got all the images imported into iMovie and added the music to the timeline as I wanted. When I previewed my results though, I was less than pleased.
After viewing the preview, the Ken Burns effect was the exact same zoom/pan for every picture--it wasn't randomizing the effect like it does when you do a slideshow from within iPhoto or Front Row. Any way to get it to randomize the effect? There's just way to many pictures in this compilation (250+) to go through and change it up a bit for each.
At this point, I figured I'd just go with the slideshow export feature in iPhoto since it does randomize the Burns effect. Yeah, that didn't go so hot either. Apparently, you can only add one music track, so I had to find a utility to combine the MP3s we were going to be using. Looked like this was going to work until we played it after the (LONG!) export process. Turns out, the slideshow somehow ended up a whole four minutes shorter than what I had in iMovie. Apparently the default transition speed of 5 seconds does not hold true to iPhoto slideshows. Plus, much to my surprise there is absolutely no fade-out in the music at the end--it just abrubtly stops. Not cool.
There's got to be a way to make that (very cool) Ken Burns effect randomize in iMovies I'd think. Any suggestions?

  • Moire effect w/ ken burns & imovie '11?

Does the moire effect created w/ the ken burns still occur in imovie '11?
I want a CLEAR video of my family vacations to include our videos & photos.  I have HD 1080p video & good quality photos.  My imovies 08 always turn out w/ the moire effect & I'm tired of bad quality videos after all the effort. I never downgraded the photo sizes or gave them a gaussion effect. I gave up after spending hours on videos to have them turn out badly.
    Please help.
    Thanks!

You might want to look into a more professional product like Final Cut Express.
IMovie11 is aimed at the hobbyist and specialized in producing videos optimized for size like youtube, iphone and the likes. Even iDVD export produces videos with artefacts for me. I use iMovie only for facebook and youtube. Its easy for that, but only for that. ( to me at last ). FCE* for all advanced projects where quality output and/or cinematic effects matters.
*Note that the current Final Cut suite which is based around Quicktime 7 technology ( Intel Leo/Snow )  will be replaced by Apple ( as announced )  this month ( June 11 )with a whole new product, dubbed "final Cut X" to provide full Quicktime X/SnowLeo/Lion optimization.. you might want to wait a few days until you decide to spend a few hundred Dollars.

  • Mixing Ken Burns effected images w/ stills

I'm creating a slideshow that mixes images with the Ken Burns effect on, and images with the effect turned off. I've noticed that when I place a non-Ken Burns'd image immediately after a Ken Burns'd image, the playback isn't accurate. The still image appears black or doesn't accuratly play back what's represented on the timeline.
I've dug through a lot of threads here but haven't found my answer. And help or just links to other threads would be great!

The workaround for this, for people running Snow Leopard, is to insert a smallest possible Cross Dissolve transition between the Ken Burns clip and the still. Actually, probably any transition will work.
The problem seems to be related to Quicktime 7.6.6, and manifests with stills, not movie clips. However, Snow Leopard folks, unlike those running Leopard, have not successfully been able to revert to an earlier version of Quicktime--at least as far as I know. You will notice that the problem does not manifest between Ken Burns photos or video clips, but only when non-Ken Burns stills are involved. Ken Burns stills are really movie clips. Inserting a transition will also turn a still into a movie clip. Thus evolves the workaround.
    Hope this works for you.

  • Ken Burns effect on imported iphoto photos

Using iMovie 6 updated, when applying KB effect to iPhoto photos imported to either clip board or timeline, the photo renders to black on the timeline. I can import photos if I don't apply KB effect. What do I do? Go back to an earlier edition of iMovie like iMovie 5 which seemed to work? I hope not!

    Hi Mike:
    Welcome to discussions!
It may be this iMovie 6 bug:
Updating Ken Burns stills works only until you empty the trash in iMovie HD 6.0.3

  • Exporting still photos with Ken Burns from iMovie to Keynote

I am new to the Mac and have no experience of iMovie. I am putting together a slide lecture that uses photos and graphics to promote a coffee-table book on conservation issues. The presentation will use manual advance and will be shown to public audiences on large screens. The quality of the projected image is very important so I will be using a high quality Canon projector with a resolution of 1400x1050.
Some images are of landscapes and I want to use the Ken Burns effect that is available in iPhoto and iMovie but, for some unknown reason, not in Keynote. I posted this first with the Keynote Discussion Forum and was advised to move the photos from iPhoto to iMovie, apply the Ken Burns effect in iMovie, and then export to Keynote via Quicktime. My question is, if I do this, will my Ken Burns landscapes retain the same size and quality of projected image as the rest of my Keynote presentation? My impression is that using this process I may lose quality, but I hope I'm wrong. Please advise.

Some background: Importing photos with the Ken Burns checkbox ON causes iMovie to render a video clip from the photo. That's an entirely different process than importing the photo as a "still" image. Unfortunately, Ken Burns and several other rendering routines are vulnerable to factors that sometimes cause them to fail. The disk format can cause failure, third-party software, inadequate video cards and the like. The factors often have nothing to do with iMovie itself.
The same problems can occur when rendering other kinds of clips too, such as themes and special effects. (Ken Burn gets the bad rep because it's where the problems usually occur for users.)
Some of the items you listed in your Library/QuickTime folder are third-party products. There may be others too in the other folders mentioned in the link I posted earlier, so be sure to look in those too. And in iMovie plug-in folders.
Sometimes necessary items are missing that should exist. One I've seen mentioned here occasionally is the QuartzComposer.component, which should reside in your System/Library/QuickTime folder. If it's not there that might cause the problems you see.
Installing/reinstalling the QuickTime 7.1.6 might help. I've seen reports of problems going away after that update. Repeating the update won't hurt.
Have you tried creating a new user account and running iMovie as that user? If iMovie runs okay as that user that suggests a software conflict when you are the user. Unfortunately, if the software is installed in places where it applies to all users it will cause problems for the new user too.
I'd keep trying to find some software component causing trouble for QuickTime/iMovie. It's clear some third-party components have been installed; there might be others. Perhaps stuff related to AVI?

  • I made a slide show in imovie using ken burns effect and when i transfer it to idvd the background shimmers.  Is there a way around this?

If anyone has done this before and knows how to keep ken burns and lose the shimmer I would appreciate your help.

Add some blur to the image.  I know it sounds crazy, but blurring the photo will reduce the flicker on a TV.  DVDs are really low res. and by reducing the image detail will help prevent line flicker.
