Stuttering on iTunes 12.1.2

I'm noticing a pronounced increase in audio stuttering on iTunes 12.1.2. Hopefully it's due to some background updating related to 10.10.3 and/or Photos that will resolve itself.  But just wondering if anyone else is noticing this?

  • Bug Report: Probable Cause of Stuttering in iTunes v7.0.2.16 -- Crossfade

Has anyone ever tried to send a bug report into Apple? I've looked all over and can't find anything that would let me send in a bug report.
I think I have tracked down one of the issues with stuttering in iTunes v7.0.2.16 Its in the crossfading in the play back options. If I disable crossfading, gone is the stuttering and cpu hogging at the start of a track. The length of the stuttering, how far it goes into the next track, is the length of the crossfade. Also, has anybody else noticed that with the stuttering comes a maxing out of the CPU? While typing this my computer will go unresponsive when iTunes starts a new track and stutters and I can watch the CPU Usage History spike during the attempted crossfade.
I hope that Apple finds this and it is a help in fixing the issue as I really do like iTunes. And if anyone knows how to send this on to Apple as a proper bug report, just post a comment letting me know and I will do it.
And lastly, any comments showing the reproduction of this evidence would probably be helpful to Apple in resolving this issue.

    Okay Chris...
I've double and triple checked all of the bullet points in your troublshooter document, and all is in good order.
I found that my Direct X was out of date, and got excited when I upgraded it and started playing tunes. For about 5 or six tracks, there was not any skipping during the crossfade, but alas, the problem is still there, and still garbles the tunes at the very end and release of the crossfade.
Not ALL tunes, just a certain intermitant few.
FYI, this bug was never an issue until v7.0 was released. Crossfading in previous versions was not a problem, until now. So there must have been something that has changed, from the previous to this release, and my assumption is the gapless playback. Just a guess, as it is new.
Any other thoughts as to the cause? And beter yet... the solution?
I sincerely would like to keep using iTunes as my default music player...

  • Playback stuttering in itunes 11.1.8 using W7

Having sudden issues with playback stuttering in itunes 11.1.8 using W7.
Tried adjusting the playback rates with no luck. I'm a music educator and not "just" listening through iTunes for pleasure. I need to have my files available for flawless playback in classroom situations every day. Please help!

I was having the same problem and I just retried listening to my Motown station. It's working now. Problem with Apple's servers(?)

  • Audio is stuttering in iTunes and Finder

This is a long post, sorry, but I want to try and be specific as possible. I am stumped, frustrated and at my wits end... any advice/help would be killer!
So, idk what happened, but as of a few days ago (3 to 4 days) my G5 has been stuttering (for lack of a better description) when playing back audio via iTunes or through the Finder window. The 'stuttering' is multiple pauses throughout a song... like 50+ times, making it choppy and unable to play straight through. It's maddening to say the least.
The weekend before Xmas, some Diet Sprite was accidentally spilled in the front of my machine while I was not home. Apparently the machine made some beeps, 'smelled funny', yellow and red LED lights turned on and the machine was promptly unplugged. When I came home 3-4 days after the spill, all was well with the machine until a few days ago when this audio problem started.
I thought perhaps being that the RAM is up front in the machine that the soda could have corrupted the RAM. I ran the Apple Hardware Test with the DVD install disc that came with the computer and 3 hours later, the RAM (as well as all hardware) passed. Same when I ran Tech Tool Deluxe. When I ran Disc Utility, everything checked out fine too. System Profiler recognizes all the RAM as well.
Some things to take into consideration:
-I can use Adobe CS2 Suite apps perfectly. No performance issues at all.
-I have a 2TB RAID external HD which houses my music that iTunes feeds from. Even if I play audio via the Finder window from music files on my Desktop, it still 'stutters.' So it stutters no matter if the audio file resides on the external HD or internal HD.
-I have NOT tried playing music through my iTunes with music located on my desktop HD. I have about 400+ gb worth of music and being iTunes is as slow as it is, call me lazy, but I don't want to discard my library and reload a few albums to see if the 'stutter' problem doesn't happen.
-Music playback is PERFECT if I stream my iTunes to my PC laptop or any other laptops in the house. No 'stuttering.'
-After I ran the Safari update, this problem arose (to best of my memory)
Specs of the computer are: G5 Dual 2.3ghz + 5gb RAM running 10.4.11 with no available updates to install.
Again, if anyone has any idea or anyway to possibly solve this, I'd be forever grateful. Thanx!

Open up Console in Applications>Utilities, watch it for errors when these stutters occur.
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Airplay stuttering on itunes

    hi,
recently i bought an airplay speaker.
when i play a song with airplay on the speaker via my iphone 5 it works perfectly however when i play a song on itunes on my windows 7pc it keeps stuttering. I tried streaming music with airfoil but this also stutters.
Both my iphone and the pc are connected to my wifi network on 802.11n 300 Mbit/s wireless router.
    i have itunes 11.0.2.26
pc specs: intel core 2 Duo CPU T6400 @2.00GHz
    4gb ram
    64 -bit windoes 7
Wifi card: Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-card
    what could be the problem?

I'have the same problem as well,

  • Music keeps stuttering in itunes

I have a windows 8.1 pc and since the latest itunes update my music has been stuttering.  I have checked and confirmed that it is not the computer itself and my headphones are also not the problem.  The music will stutter a few times when I first start the song than it will be fine for a bit.  But, once I start using any other operations on my computer (opening apps, using the internet, etc.) it starts to stutter again, then slowly gets worse until it's unbearable.  Please help!

There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version (the alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer).  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using:" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).
Some users have reported that uninstalling Chrome (not just not having it running) resolves the iTunes playback issues without having to install the alternative version referred to above.
Finally, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • Skipping/stuttering in itunes may in fact be a bigger problem..?

so, i've been over in the itunes forum for the last couple weeks digging around for a fix to an issue i've had with that app since upgrading to 7.6 for movie rentals.
specifically, it's SEVERE skipping & stuttering of audio & video files in itunes, irrespective of whether they've been purchased on ITMS or ripped from my personal collection.
i think there may be a connection, though, with QT, since i upgraded that to 7.4 at the same time. well, fast forward to tonight when i clicked on a link to go to youtube to check out something a buddy sent me...guess what? skipping video and audio for every single youtube video i selected. have gone to other streaming media sites and...voila! same thing.
it's apparent that the playback issue is a large one, or at least bigger than itunes for me...so was interested in whether anyone here has been experiencing something similar.
    this didn't exist before "leopard + QT 7.4 + itunes 7.6"
btw, the update to itunes 7.6.1 did not alleviate the issue.

agreed. could've written that better. was attempting to demonstrate the pervasiveness of the problem...
    affected media:
    - video & audio in itunes (m4p & m4v)
    - video & audio in quicktime (mpeg)
    - video & audio in both safari & firefox (flash)
    hoping someone's got a suggestion...

  • Ip5 video stuttering via itunes

    Hi,

  • Full screen video blank and aac music stutters!  iTunes 7.0.1

When listening to music, the sound will sometime just stop, the music is not paused and the playback time counter at the top of the screen is stuck. Menus in the program still work, but until the program is restarted, the music will not resume. I tried disabling crossfade and made sure my sound drivers are up to date. There is plenty of RAM and CPU resources available to iTunes. I went into the Quicktime control panel settings and tried all the compatability settings for directX and still have had no luck. It will happen anywhere from 20 seconds to 20 minutes after iTunes is started. iTunes was my choice for a long time until the last few updates. Also, there is no video when trying to use full screen mode. Works fine in the preview mode only. I have uninstalled both iTunes and Quicktime and rebooted. I am about ready to give up and move to URGE. I fell as though I am wasting money anymore.

For future reference, here is the link to the Toshiba support page for your computer. This is where you go to get driver updates for your hardware. But you're right that there are no video or audio driver updates for your machine.
According to the website, you have a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 video controller, but it didn't say what your audio hardware was. If you go to the audio control panel (Windows Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panels), what does it say is the first "Volume" tab at the top of the Panel. That should be the current audio device. For example, mine says "SoundMax Digital Audio" What does yours say? The detailed specifications on the Toshiba page only tells me the family of the audio controller — Intel High Definition Audio — not the device manufacturer.

  • ITunes-stuttering problems:

The sound is stuttering in iTunes. I think the problem started when I installed third-party components for Quick Time. (Because Quick Time never has been working on my PC I tried this). The sound in Quick Time has always been stuttering, but not in iTunes... Why now???
Now ALL the songs are sounding the same stuttering way...!
When I press the stop\pause button the music fades out, it doesn’t stop immidiately.. It's almost like the whole program crashes.
When iTunes was OK, it played songs smooth. If I tried videos the sound was stuttering..
    I've tried this so far:
    1. Soundcard (RME) drivers updated
    2. DirectX installed
    3. Start-menu\run\dxdiag, and turned ”sound 1” to basic- mode (not full)
    PLEASE, HELP ME!!!
I have search around this forum but until now it seems like no one can help me...
    My computer:
    - Windows XP
    - Pentium 4
    - 2.4 Ghz
    - 1,5 GB RAM

    apple please fix this stuttering.
My system audio interface. RME multiface 2.94 drivers cardbus card.
Only itunes version 7 has the problem. All other apps on machine are okay. itunes 6.0.5 is okay.
    fix please.

  • Stuttering music

Just installed update 5.1 and music started stuttering. Interestingly it stutters terribly if access my computer iTunes library. If I go to the computer and stream music over AirPlay, no stuttering.
Could it be a firewall or port problem? Can't seem to understand why I can send music to Apple TV without problems but when apple TV  is asking for music from the computer it stutters constantly.
iTunes is running on a win7 x64 machine that is quite fast.
All systems are up to date.

On a Windows PC, actually, NO. Windows invokes an inordinate amount of buffering for music files, causing the "stutter" effect (hey, it's a feature not a bug!). Now, on a Mac, this is avoided by the way Macintosh OS X manages application memory space (very UNIX-like, since OS X rides on top of BSD UNIX).
Adding RAM may help somewhat (if your not already maxed out), but will not totally cure this particular ill.
    Buy a Mac.

  • Stuttering Audio

Ever so randomly about 3 weeks ago my audio started stuttering through itunes. I've done some looking around and discovered the problem was somewhat widespread and have experiemented with all the different possible fixes. Checking off the SafeMode (waveOut only) worked for about a week, but the problem returned.
I can't find any information as recently as the last month or so and am wondering if there has been any new fixes? Has Apple indicated when a fix will be out?
I'd hate to lose iTunes, is there some iTunes clone I could use until Apple fixes the problem at which point I could seamlessly transfer my library information back over to iTunes?

I had experienced the same problem -- every song in my library stuttered, more often at the beginning of the song than later, but certainly throughout. It made no difference if I had purchased the song through the iTunes store or had imported it.
In my case, though, I went into my user/library, opened up itunes/itunes plug-ins, and deleted all the plug-ins, which in my case were audioscrobbler (installed by last.fm), Iconcertcal and Jewelcase, none of which I really use. This completely eliminated the problem for me.

  • Choppy/stuttering/echoing audio

Video plays fine, but audio is unlistenable. It sounds like it's being chopped up and echoed.
Celeron 2.93 Ghz with 735 mb RAM
    Windows 2000pro with SP4
    Quicktime Player 7.1.3
    Internet Explorer 6.0
Had the same problem with an older version of iTunes, also with Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.8 and 2.0 as the browser.
No audio problems with anything else - Windows Media Player, RealAudio, Macromedia, any non-QT internet audio or audio/video stream
Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Perhaps this will help:
iTunes and QuickTime: Audio does not play or plays incorrectly
Hope it does. If not, this thread presents a fix for another potential cause of skipping/stuttering in iTunes for Windows.
    Good luck.

  • Can no longer queue songs in iTunes

    Hi,
I also have recently had the problem with the audio stuttering in iTunes. I've restored my PC a couple of times and reinstalled the latest version of both iTunes and QuickTime and currently it seems to have fixed the problem.
I now notice that I can no longer queue songs in iTunes. Previously I used the Party Shuffle option alot, but this has only one song listed (instead of the past 5 and next queued 15). If I play a song in the library and click on the >> button, the song just ends, without moving to the next song (doesn't matter whether shuffle is on or not). Any ideas on how to fix this this?

I seem to recall deleting the prefs file fixing Party Shuffle issues:

  • Screen stuttering in iPad 2 WiFi+3G

    Hi,
I've experiencing bad screen stuttering in my iPad 2 WiFi+3G for a while, and now I want to figure out what it's causing it.
To be short, there's video stuttering in YouTube (however this gets confused with delay of the 3G/WiFi network), much screen stuttering in the Facebook news feed and the same screen stuttering appears in every other application.
May it be because the disk space is at its lowest? I've only 586 MB out of 13,8 GB free.
    No music stuttering in iTunes.
    My specs:
iOS 6.1.3 (10B329) - I do not want to update to iOS 7 as of now
    Model/type MC773TY/A (iPad 2, WiFi + 3G)
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The iPad 2 isn't compatible with 4G or LTE networks, so you need a new iPad if you want to use it. Apart from that, you have to find a carrier that supports this network
