Stuttering playback...what's up?

i videotaped some 1080i clips and imported them to imovie.....and it plays back in imovie fine, even in full screen mode. but when i export the clips, and play them back in quicktime 7.1, the video is very stuttery....WHY!? i'm on imovie 6.0.1.....and my old HD videos play back fine in quicktime 7.1.

change the audio setting in the quick time player settings to a lower rate. your settings may be defalted at 44.1 and the rate, when slowed down, will stop the stuttering.

  • Stuttering Playback on iMac

I am experiencing stuttering playback and a strange noise on playback especially when unrendered h.264 is involved.  When it works, it works fine but occasionally this will happen:
    www.givethatmanajob.com/Public/issues/StutterPlayback_a.mov
I am suspecting my GFX card may be having trouble. All software is current. Any throughts?

Sometimes I do transcode, sometimes not.  The problem happens intermittantly regaurdless and I started to suspect that it was h.264 that was given issues most of the time so I shot some test video on an iPhone.  In the original post the video I linked to shows footage that was *not* transcoded.
Coming from an iPhone means nothing, especially as the iPhone, whatever iPhone this is, shoots non-standard video formats.
    An iPhone 4s shooting h.264 1080p .mov
In the world of tapeless media, this is pretty standard.
I understand that H.264 is a long GOP format, and not optimized for editing hence the desirability to transcode to an intraframe codec such as ProRes. However, one of the features of FCPX is that it is designed to handle h.264 footage because a lot of video is shot that way these days.
Coming from an iPhone does not mean nothing. It means the company that designed the software capable of editing h.264 also designed the software and hardware that shot the footage in h.264 format. It means we can expect that at least some thought was put into them playing well together. It means that if I shoot some test video on an iPhone, put in on an iMac running FCPX without filters I should be able to expect smooth playback all else being equal.

  • IPod nano: Stuttering playback

I've been having intermittent problems with my ipod nano (~6 months old) that manifest as stuttering playback. This happens seemingly at random, affecting all sorts of tracks, which then play fine at other times. The stuttering can be slight or so bad that the whole playback comes to a halt. Turning the iPod on and off doesn't neccessarily solve it, thought it can, and it can also go away of its own accord!
Has anyone else experienced this? I've tried the reset and updated my iPod - neither helped.
Next step, return to Apple and get ripped off for p&P and handling? Not impressed with this company or their 'customer service'
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Cheers

    Hi,
Casper G - I've not restored it yet. I'll give it a go tonight.
Deluded, I've never tried with a podcast. All my issues are with music (either converted from mp3 ripped from a CD, or downloaded direct from iTunes) and audiobooks.
Apple's response to your issue is pretty pathetic.
ibkidd37 - no I don't rate songs. This isn't an issue with accidental fast forwarding. The playback stutters (not skips) and slows and then either corrects itself or grinds to a halt.
Is there any other way of getting technical support other than asking the forums and hoping some other paying cutomer has had the same issue and solved it?
    Cheers

  • Stuttering playback with all footage. New CC 2014.1 install

I just installed CC 2014 on a mac. Still have CS6 too. I'm getting a very strange stuttering playback issue. Looks like 10 frames per second. then crashes. Cleared preffs and rebooted but didnt fix it. I have tried several types of footage and all plays back the same. Main footage is 24p C300.

    Hello Erik,
    Sorry you're having trouble.
Can you give us the specs of your Mac? Include info on RAM, CPU, drives, OS X version, GPU type and driver number.
Is this a new project or one you updated from an earlier version of Premiere Pro?
Here are some other things I'm recommending for Mac users for this version:
Sign out from Creative Cloud, restart Premiere Pro, then sign in
    Update any GPU drivers
Trash preferencesI read you already tried this.
Ensure Adobe preference files are set to read/write
    Delete media cache
    Remove plug-ins
If you have AMD GPUs, make sure CUDA is not installed
    Repair permissions
In Sequence Settings > Video Previews, change the codec to one that matches your footage
    Disconnect any third party hardware
    Reboot
Some users are reporting anomalies with certain footage. To fix it, they rename the folder the media files are in, then relink in Premiere Pro. You may want to try a test with a few clips rather than the whole project first.
Report back if anything here worked for you.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Stuttering playback issues

Is anyone have a solution for smooth playback all files are pro res 422 the sequence is about 30 min. and is outputting to a monitor through a Kona 3g card we are getting stuttering playback and cant seem to fix it any suggestions?

What are the sequence settings? I got pretty bad playback until I created a ProRes template.

  • ITunes stuttering playback

After the big OS X Leopard update, iTunes started skipping or stuttering on playback. It does it often enough that the program is basically unusable. The skipping is NOT related to internet access by my mail program (Mailsmith) or web browsers. It is NOT an mp3 file corruption problem, since the stuttering occurs in different places with each replay of the same song. The songs are those loaded from my own CD's and played flawlessly before the software update. The usual rigamarole of trashing preferences and resetting PRAM has not changed anything.
I have noticed other people with the same problem posting on different boards. I assumed that the 7.6.1 update to iTunes would address this issue. No such luck.
I am at a loss. I have an almost new MacBook which worked flawlessly until the update. I am very disappointed with Apple that 1) this issue is not addressed, and 2) that it is impossible to contact anyone knowledgeable about how to attempt to fix this. As a legacy Mac user (first 128K Mac bought on 2/24/1984 and many, many Macs since, this is a new type of helpless feeling.
    Help!

This is a widespread issue, search the boards for "stutter" .... there must several hundred people posting on these forums with the same issue.
I have my 300GB + iTunes library on an external WD My Book Pro (a 2TB version set up as a 1TB RAID mirror) connected via FW800. I solved my stuttering playback problem by transferring my library to another external FW800 drive with two Seagate 200GB drives configured as a RAID stripe.
Thats all I've found so far.....

  • Stuttering playback on editing monitor

Playback of movie being edited on the editing monitor is erratic and stuttery. I went to iMovie HD Preferences and selected both "Standard" and "Highest" playback modes to no avail. The stuttery playback continues.
However, when I click on "full screen playback", the stuttering ceases and playback smooths out.
I also encounter annoying delays in response to start and stop play commands in the editing process.
The movie, currently 46 minutes long, contains 100-110 stills but no slow motion scenes. Other than a half-dozen scrolling titles, all the rest is video.
Any ideas as to what's causing the stuttering and delay problems and their solutions will be much appreciated.

If your project contains audio clips as well as video clips, you might be seeing the slowdown that occurs when the project contains many audio clips.
More about the problem here, with workarounds:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2597033#2597033
The precise number of audio clips that causes this problem seems to vary from Mac to Mac. As few as 30 audio clips has been reported.
The project I just tested plays poorly except in Full Screen mode. That wasn't true in the others I tested, but apparently Full Screen does work for some projects. So what I see here is consistent with your experience.

  • Stuttering playback

    Hi
I am editing in a ProRes LT 422 time line using ProRes LT material 1920 x 1080p. This is on a Mac pro Quad-Core Xeon with 6GB DDR3 and a 4TB esata stripped raid, using OS x10.6.4 and Final Cut 7.
I have been suffering from intermittent playback issues since this project started, it has been inconsistent whole sequences playing through perfectly then not. Changing the RT and quality does make a difference but again not consistently.
Then I started to look at the front slate which is made up of a B/W jpeg and several layers of none animated text. this is the only material in any of the sequences that was not prores. Re formatting them as a prores movie and limiting the layers to two levels of text appears to have stopped this stuttering. But I am not convinced that its that stupid! has anyone else seen this kind of behaviour is my fix a real fix or am I missing something else.
    Thanks in Advance
    Steve

Moving from LT to SQ did not help the issue. To explain a little further playback actually stops on this slate in multiple sequences @23.98fps and then will affect the playback of any other media in the time line. Swapping sequences will sometime reset the playback, sometimes not. My issue is that this is a Prores LT project as prescribed by the client, changing the setting is not really an option. What I really want to understand is why this jpeg still and text layer can affect things so badly. The jpeg is not corrupt; I have tried resetting the user preferences that made no difference.

  • Stuttering playback after export

    Hi,
Sorry if such a question has been answered elsewhere but I have looked around for the past few hours and been unable to find an answer. However I am new to Adobe Premiere Pro (and video editing in general really) so perhaps I am missing something fundamental.
My basic problem is that I have created a video which plays fine in the Premiere preview (I have CS4) but after exporting it, the video becomes very stuttering and jerky. To be honest I'm a bit unsure of a lot of the technical terms etc but i'll try to provide all the info that may be of use.
I own a Sony HDR SR10E camera and so my orignal video files are shot (to my knowledge) in 1080i 1920x1080 25fps PAL AVCHD ... (I've probably repeated myself there or something). I am trying to put the video on youtube/vimeo and so have read to try to encode using the H.264 codec, at 1280x720, 25fps, trying to deinterlace it (didn't entirely understand what that meant but read that if you choose "None(Progressive)" under "Field Set" AME would automatically do it. I've tried a number of variations of the settings but every time after it has finished its very jerky etc.
I did try exporting it as a f4v file and the jerkiness had gone but i'm not sure if you can use this format to upload to youtube/vimeo etc, and anyway I don't understand why the h.264 codec is causing this problem when it all plays fine in premiere itself.
If any more info is needed, please say. I'm sorry if i'm making some massive error but although i've spent the last 8 hours trying to understand all the technological terms and sort it out myself I haven't been able to and any help is very much appreciated!

i have the exact same problem... i used all the same settings as I did in CS3 but the h.264 output is ALWAYS choppy. I even used the program "gspot" to make sure all the settings were EXACTLY the same, and they were... but anything output in cs4/adbone encoder comes out choppy. It's not a framerate issue, it's not a problem with the source files (projects in cs3 work just fine).
I am so frustrated at this, mainly because I can't open my CS4 files in CS3 and I *need* to encode in h.264. Output to other formats like WMV work fine, but unfortunately the place i upload my videos rejects the files i upload, even though they look OK on my computer.
very frustrating, I have no idea what to do. I've tried everything in project settings as well as encoder settings but the problem still exists. All my old movies, encoded in CS3, all playback flawlessly. Again, every single setting is the same, and I have applied the Premiere update, as well as the encoder update without any luck.

  • Adding Transitions freezes and stutters playback in Preview.

I'm posting this as a new issue. Since I've narrowed down my "stuttering/freezing on playback" problem while in Preview/Edit mode.
This begins to happen as SOON as I add a transition. Whether I add it automatically, or manually.
The clips play fine without transitions in the project and the Event window. These are clips from a Kodak Zi6, I believe shot HD at 60fps, and I'm using NTSC 30fps to create the project. When I "get info" on my clips, the codecs listed are H.264 and AAC, dimensions 1280x720.
When the Movie Project is exported & viewed in QuickTime, it plays smoothly.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as I'd like to preview my work as I go!
This movie is LESS than one minute long!

    UPDATE - A workaround?
after what you posted about converting the file to the apple codec AIC - it occurred to me to try this.
Put a clip in the project browser - it starts stuttering - with or without transitions.
click on clip and select "clip adjustments". Now when you need to run slow mo you click the "convert clip" button. Do this even though you don't need to slomo the clip and it will come up with "converting whole clip" - this can take a while if the clip/event the clip is from is quite long. Hang in there. Click done. ......and......
    all works perfectly.
It seems like the converter converts the whole event because if you now choose other clips from the event they too work with no problems! So looks like... before you start run the conversion on a clip from all the events you are about to use and then you can work normally...
I've run a test project and now transistions/ green screen/ PiP all work smooth. IS this the workaround we needed?
Do you know if the convertion to AiC changes size or quality? I cant tell at the moment. But it works! (well so far.....)
Please let me know if this works for you too - if so it might be worth starting another thread as so many people are having the stutter problem and i've not seen a workaround yet that's easy to do.
    Anyone?
Apple - we should not need to do this!

  • Stuttered playback then error

    Windows 7 x64 SP1
    Flash v11.7.700.202
    IE9 & 10
When playing a video on youtube, I get 1-2 seconds of the video to play then it stutters a bit, restarts the video and plays for a half second then the playback video goes to the black fuzz screen stating, "An error occurred, please try again later". Things I have tried:
    1. Uninstalled/reinstalled Flash multiple times and have even tried out one of the beta versions.
    2. Cleared temp files and cookies to no avail.
    3. Reset IE back to defaults and upgraded IE to v10 without differing results.
    4. Manually removing Flash reg entries (Receive errors that they cannot be deleted even though I have changed permissions and ownership)
    5. Clearing Flash's temp files/licenses.
    6. Created a new Windows user profile.
    6. Updated to latest video drivers.
    7. Enabled/Disabled hardware acceleration.
I am at a complete loss as to what is causing the issue.  Flash videos play perfectly fine in Chrome.  Please help!

I also am having the same issue, it only occurs in Internet Explorer and I have also tried all the above solutions.  When all of those failed I did a complete reinstall of windows, and after updating my windows 7 enterprise 64-bit, I installed Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight, Java and Quicktime.  Tried to play a youtube video and the problem still existed.  I have seen the issue on 3 different models of PC's I work with on a regular basis, all running windows 7 enterprise 64-bit.   I have also tried rolling back all the way to IE8, and verified activex filtering was off and the problem still existed.

  • Stuttering Playback on HD Monitor

I recently installed a 47" Vizio 1080P HD TV as my program out monitor on my Final Cut Studio editing setup. I have dual 25" screens for the timeline etc., and when I first hooked it all up the picture looked AMAZING!!! Now however, no matter which project I open, including older ones that initially played back cleanly, every single one stutters on playback on the Vizio. I have trashed my preferences, changed playback display settings (currently Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Full Screen) and still I get stutter. I have to show a finished edit to a client tomorrow and really need clean playback. Any suggestions?

Got mine working after changing the file. This is where to find it on the FCP disc - From Creative Cow :
    Re: Weird little playback bug

I managed to get to that file on the FCP7 install disc.
    here's what to do:
Load up your Final Cut Studio Install disk,
or if you've made a disk image (good idea) access that.
Inside that, notice that the "Instal Final Cut Studio" package is actually an Alias,
so right-click on that and "Show Original"
You'll be taken to a folder called "Installer" inside of which is another folder called "Packages"
Inside the Packages folder locate the VideoOutSupport.pkg,
right-click on it, and "Show Package Contents"
Inside the Contents folder, locate the Archive.paz.gz file.
Drag it to the desktop, and double click on it to un-zip it.
This will create a folder called "Library"
Open it, go to the QuickTime folder inside it,
and there you will find the file "DesktopVideoout.component"
Put this file in Macintosh HD > Library >QuickTime,
replacing the similarly named file there.
Digital Cinema Desktop Preview should now work.
    cheers,
    nick

  • FCPX-Intensity pro stuttering playback on a Mac Pro. Why?

I have FCPX running on a Lion partition on a Mac Pro, early 2008, Intensity Pro card. On the same machine, I have run FCP7 on a Snow Leopard Partition for years and dozends of documentaries, with an output smooth as silk and a wonderful HD preview on an external HD lcd tv. When I try the same from FCPX/Lion, the playback is stuttering, as if one progressive frame any three would play. The clips are coming from a Canon camcorder that FCP7 always misinterpreted giving a wrong field dominance (none instead of lower first). I could override that using the "item properties" on FCP7 so that I could export a perfect IMX or DVCAM 50i file for the satelite tv channel I produce for, but the preview on the lcd tv was great even if I did not fiddle with that setting, so I am not sure that the problem could be in the wrong field dominance. On FCPX the clips are labeled as 25P, I override that and change to lower first, as well as the project settings to 1080i, 25i, but the problem remains, so that the preview on the external tv is not acceptable, while the clip shows fine in the canvas. Both Lion, FCPX and Blackmagic drivers are the latest version. What can be wrong??
    Thank you
    Fabrizio D'Agnano
    Rome, Italy

Sorry, it is actually "upper", not "lower".
I only shoot in 1080i because I don't like the flickering effect I get with 25P in pans or fast moving shots. When I log and transfer from FCP7, the clips are marked as "field dominance"="none" in the browser window or either in the "item properties". It is wrong, as the cam setting is "1080i". If I output a PAL signal to an external CRT tv via a firewire adapter or if I build a dvd or a DVCAM or IMX PAL master, it will clearly show the wrong fields order. When I output the preview to an HD tv the fields dominance problem won't show at all. So right after I logged and transferred clips from the card, I select all of them in the browser, go to the "field dominance" column, and set them to "upper first". Now when I drag them on the PAL timeline everything is good. If I modify the dominance after the clip has been dragged onto the timeline, the problem will remain, so, just to make sure I did not overlook any of the clips, I select all the video tracks in the timeline, control click or right click, choose "item properties" and then check and in case modify the settings for the wrong clips. Differently from what happens if I modify them in the browser, this will actually affect the clips on the timeline.
    Regards
    Fabrizio

  • Stuttering Playback in FCP

Playback in my timeline is all of the sudden stuttering/jittery. Especially noticeable on dolly shots or pans. I am working in ProRes LT. I have trashed prefs...restarted...no joy - the problem persists. When I output to a QT movie the footage is fine...no stutter.
For the record this is Canon 7D footage transferred in the Canon Plug in. That may be the issue. I have MB Grinder but I never use it. I am working on a big Mac Pro with lots or memory.
    Very annoying. Any ideas, kids?

Inferring what is missing from the description, I'm guessing you shot 24 and brought your footage into a 30fps timeline or transcoded to 30. Additional frames would be obvious on camera moves and they'd not be so obvious on other types of shots. That you don't see it on output (Do you really mean export or are you watching output on a video display?) doesn't tell us much. QT Player? Inside the Browser (which is just QT Player in a box)?

  • Imovie 5.0.2, Stuttering playback and out of synch audio with visual.

I have edited a movie on Imovie HD 5.0.2, it is about 50 mins long. When I came to record back onto my Sony DCR-HC42E camcorder (I don't have a combo drive on my Imac) the playback is not acceptable. It stutters, freezes and after a while the audio becomes out of synch with the visual. The playback is generally not smooth enough either. I have updated to the latest operating system. I have chosen standard quality playback from the preferences option and am very frustrated at the poor results.
I have 20 GB of space left on the computer.
If anyone can suggest a solution I would be most grateful.

    1 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   256 MB DDR SDRAM

Mark, if your Mac has just 256MB RAM it's possible adding more RAM will improve playback and your export to the camera. I wouldn't bet on it, but it's certainly worth a try. (You need more RAM anyway, so it's a good idea nevertheless.)
There may be another way to successfully export your project to your camera. Even projects that "stutter" when played in iMovie often export correctly to QuickTime. (The export to QT is not time sensitive, unlike the export to the camera.) You should be able to export your project to a Full Quality DV movie, one of iMovie's built-in export options. Exporting to QuickTime "flattens" the movie, making it easier to play.
You would then import THAT movie to a new iMovie project. That project will probably export successfully to the camera.
You may want to test this by exporting the first few minutes of the project. (To export a group of clips instead of the entire project, select them and use the checkbox button "Share selected clips only" that you'll see in the export dialog.)
You're running low on disk space, so here's a trick to avoid iMovie having to make yet ANOTHER copy of the Full Quality movie when importing it. The movie will be about 12GB; it won't be small.
Instead of importing the Full Quality movie to a new project, create the new iMovie project, Quit iMovie, open the project package (Control-click on the project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu) then drop the Full Quality movie into the Media folder. Re-open the project. The Full Quality movie appear in the iMovie trash. Open the Trash window and drag the clip to the Timeline. Save, then export to your camera.
