Stuttering Transition on encode

Hey Guys -
Working on a DVD project for a client. The feature portion of the project is a 55 min clip that was edited in iMovie. I don't have the iMovie project I have a DV export of the video. I encoded the DV file in Compressor to m2v and ac3 audio, used highest setting encode for 90min DVD. There are 2 transitions in the video that have a stutter freeze look to them back on DVD. I don't see them on my mac however on any of the files or the burned DVD. I watched the DVD on 4 different DVD players and I see it everytime. Are there settings I need to change? I have my settings at 2 pass VBR, 4.0 on Bit Rate and 7.4 on max bit rate. Motion estimation best. I had the same issues on one pass VBR and better motion estimation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is driving me nuts.
Thanks
Chris

So the stutter is not when you play the burned DVD on the computer, only the standalone players? What media are you using? That could be one of the issues if it plays back from the DVD on the computer and from the build folder. Sometimes bad media or burns can cause this

  • Stuttering NTSC .m2v encode from PAL DV

Hi, I've captured a PAL Mini-DV cassette into FCP via Firewire - which correctly sees it as Lower Field First. I needed to produce an NTSC DVD of the footage. So in Compressor I went for 'Best Quality - 90 mins 4:3' and changed the video standard to NTSC. I encoded and went on to burn NTSC DVD in DVD Studio. The final disc plays fine and my monitor regognises it is receiving a 480i 60Hz signal. HOWEVER... the conversion in frame rates (25fps > 29.97fps) has been very evident, there aren't any field issues (no tearing on fast movements) but the feel of the video is of a distinct stutter as though some of the frames are being doubled up. I guess this is in fact what Compressor has had to do but is there any way of smoothing this change in frame rates?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Since you didn't mention it, I have to ask: did you adjust the relevant controls (Retiming, Resizing) to at least Better while setting Frame Controls to Custom in Compressor?

  • 18 fps breaks transition previewing, precision editor, and keywords

    Greetings,
I'm working on a Super 8 movie project. My films were scanned at 18 fps. When I imported them into iMovie '11 I had no choice but to convert them to another speed -- 24 fps in this case. OK. Most things work fine, but there are a few exceptions.
Keywords: Easy to add, difficult to remove. Never get the checkmarks. Sometimes have to use Cmd-Z to remove they keywords. But it all works fine as long as I have a project whose frame rate is the same as the raw footage, which I can't do with Super 8 transfers. OK, I can live without keywords.
Transition previews: Again, this is only a problem when there is a frame mismatch between the project footage and the raw footage. But with my Super 8 transfers I have no choice: The raw footage is at 18fps while iMovie does only 24 or 30 fps. I chose 24 fps.
One problem is using the transition preview function in the transition Inspector. (Just to be clear, I hover over the little transition thingie in the Project Browser to select it, click the gear, then click Transition Adjustments on the drop-down menu. Then I click the Transitions thing and that opens a palette of transitions. I skim over the various transitions to preview them.) Depending on the transition (assume were doing clip A to clip B), clip A shows up fine but, depending on which transition you choose, part or all of clip B is the wrong footage from somewhere else in the project. (WT...?)
Precision editor: Skimming the bottom row shows a completely different part of the footage than it should! Playback on the middle line works fine, though. Footage on the top strip is the same as on the middle strip when the playhead is to the left of the transition. This should also be the case with the bottom strip and the middle strip when the playhead is to the right of the transition, but the bottom strip shows a completely different footage instead.
Also, the transition playback is a little jerky. Fortunately, all is well with normal playback and exported footage.
OK. I'm on iMovie 9.0.4. I think this is the latest version I can use with OS X version 10.6.8. I saw a post with iMovie 9.0.7 mentioned, but that only works for Lion. OK, so my question is, will these bugs be fixed if I upgrade to Lion and the most current version of iMovie? Or, am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

CORRECTION: Sorry, the mismatch of frame rates is not responsible for the bottom strip of the Precision Editor (PE) from showing the wrong footage. I did a test where some Super 8 18-fps footage placed into iMovie 24 fps  worked fine. But most cases still exhibit the problem. So I don't know what's causing it.
I'm reasonably sure that frame-rate mismatching is the cause of the keywords problem. I took some test footage with the Mac's camera and that's at 15 fps. If I work with that footage in a 30 fps project, all works well. If I work in a 24 fps project, I never get the checkmarks when marking footage, but I am able to use Remove All to remove all the keyword marking strips. But when I work with my Super 8 footage, 18 fps original in 24 fps projects, it's even worse. I can't remove the keywords except via Cmd-Z. Acutally, many moons ago I think I did find a way, but it was difficult and took much experimentation, and thus much time. Come to think of it, the "many moons ago" was almost certainly a time when I had an eariler verion of iMovie. Other than this, my tests yield consistent results -- so far ((!))
Great program, except for the annoying bugs. I like the design. I really like the "extendo buttons", as David Pogue and Aaron MIller's book iMovie '09 calls them (Apple term: Fine Tuning buttons). And now that I'm adding a few transitions to my VFT movie, I'd really like the PE to work. Bummer.
As for stuttering transitions, I have more experimentation to do.
Sorry for the goof about the PE.

When I remove the DOCTYPE it works but is this a Xalan Problem or is the using of a doctype declaration in a XSL Document generally forbidden ?
Because without Doctype i cant use characters such as "", "", and so on.

  • Various iDVD '08 Problems

I have read the posts in this discussion group and I don't see anyone describing these types of problems. Perhaps you can help.
I have a large (4 GB) multi-slideshow (11) project with over 400 total slides. I built each slideshow in iDVD from the pictures in my iPhoto '08 Library.
While building the project, iDVD crashed twice and I had one kernal panic.
In rearranging the order of my slides for one of the larger slideshows, several small groups of slides were randomly (?) scattered throughout the rest of the slideshow. I didn't notice this until after I burned the DVD. I could have sworn the Preview was perfect for all of the slideshows before the burn.
Trying to burn the project to a DVD was problematic. There were no warning symbols on the DVD map of the project. The first burn ended in a "Multiplexor Error - during muxing preparation (Project Conversion)". Nothing was written to the DVD. The second try ended in a "Multiplexing & Burning Asset Parsing" error. Still nothing written to the DVD but somewhat further along than before. On my little iMac G5-1.8 these initial burns (with encoding) take on the order of 5 hours.
A call to AppleCare Support gave me a few suggestions. The first was to try Advanced > Delete Encoded Asset. This eliminated the background encoding that was probably messed up with all of my editing of the slideshows. It gives a fresh encoding of the project at the time of the burn. This allowed me to finally burn the DVD. But I can't claim victory yet. When I played the DVD on an external player, part way through the last slideshow, the transitions (Dissolve) from one slide to the next were lost and it just displayed a green screen for the entire transition. This was the last slideshow of all my pictures (all 400 of them).
My Project Info window gives me a 100% green bar for Quality at Best Performance encoding. Every line in the Media box has a check in the Status column. Steve from AppleCare suggested changing the encoding to High Quality. From other posts on this discussion board it looks like iDVD will make two passes for High Quality encoding. Would this double my encoding and burn time to 10 hours??? Another suggestion Steve made is to eliminate one of my slideshows, perhaps the last and biggest one. Any other suggestions?
Has anyone else run into these types of problems in iDVD '08? Is this typical for new software?
    Thanks for your help,
    Rich

Thank you SDMacuser and Jim2006 for your discussion thread. I hope you can still help me with this project.
    Item:
When slideshows are sent to iDVD from iPhoto they are rendered out as movies, so they will take about twice as long to encode using two-pass. And since they can have motion, they will benefit from two-pass encoding.
    Response:
I didn't create the slideshow in iPhoto and use the "Share > Send to iDVD" command. I built each slideshow within iDVD using the photos in iPhoto. I chose this method because dragging photos from a Finder window into iDVD significantly increased the file size of my project (from a few hundred KB to several hundred MB for the same number of slides). The one slideshow I did send to iDVD from iPhoto is several hundred MB and according to what you say above, it apparently was rendered as a movie before going to iDVD.
    Questions:
Do you think this is where iDVD is having trouble with the large slideshow and the transitions for it (remember the green screen transitions)? Should I just pull the last slide show of 400+ slides and burn it as a separate DVD? All the other smaller slideshows (a couple were over 100 slides each) in the project were encoded fine with their transitions. It appears that iDVD is going to the iPhoto Library to grab each slide for the slideshows and then building the transition. For this project, the total is over 800 slides. Could that be the reason for the long encoding time?
    Item:
What is taking so long and making the project so large is the transitions. To isolate the problem I suggest first burning this project without transitions to a disc image. If this still fails then just start removing slideshows/images until it works and then you will figure out which image is causing the problem.
    Response:
I noticed in the progress window that transitions are encoded and tracked separately from other project items like menus and slides. But the transitions were encoded in parallel with other project items. I will try burning the project to disc image without the transitions and compare the times. But I really like the transitions between slides. They kind of take me back to the old days of a slide projector, screen and trays of slides.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Rich

  • Sequence compression setting / Quicktime Export

Is there any advantage to changing the sequence compression setting to "None" and re-rendering before exporting a sequence using DVCAM footage captured from a DSR30 via FireWire? My normal compression setting is DV/DVCPRO.
How about leaving the sequence settings at DV/DVCPRO and changing the Quicktime export setting from "current settings" to "uncompressed 10 bit" or 8 bit?
I'm still getting artifacting when compressing to MPEG2, even with compression markers at transitions and encoding at 2-pass VBR and burning the DVD at 1x.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I decided to check out the Compressor discussion group - full of near suicides like me bemoaning the gross infusion of MPEG2 artifacting after upgrading to Compressor 2.
Appparently, popular opinion says the VBR feature is faulty and Apple is waiting until mutiny ensues before addressing the problem.
So I have encoded at 1-pass, 7.2 bitrate, best motion estimator, segmenting OFF, using Compressor, as suggested by some kind soul in the group, and then importing into DVDSP.
I then burned the DVD and viewed it on my bigass TV.
NO ARTIFACTING! Plus compressor took SIX minutes to MPEG2 the 40-minute FCP movie. And, yes you can see in the Compressor preview window that FCP has inserted compression markers at all edit points.
So by selecting settings for what Apple terms lower quality output, I get higher quality output in a fraction of the compression time!
I am fearful Apple is hiring enemy combatant programmers, lowering the morale of editors worldwide by making their work look like poo.

  • I am confused in setting up the basic stuff.

    Hi
    Under: "Edit' "Preferences" "New Document"
    I set the:
    Default Document: HTML
    Default Extension: .html
Default Document Type (DTD): HTML 4.01 Transitional
    Default Encoding: Unicode (UTF-8)
I check the: Use when opening existing files that don't specify an encoding
Unicode Normalization Form: Gives me 4 choices
C (Canonical Decomposition, followed by Conical Composition)
    D (Canonical Decomposition)
KC (Compatibility Decomposition, followed by Conical Composition
    KD (Compatibility Decomposition)
Not sure of which one to choose? Need help here...
I Check: Include Unicode Signature (BOM)
I am also getting files that look like: ../../../filename.html
    How do I correct this?
    Help appreciated
    Bob

I Check: Include Unicode Signature (BOM)
There's no reason to use BOM Unicode Signature in plain HTML documents.
It's actually better if you don't specify this.
I am also getting files that look like: ../../../filename.html
Define your site.  Go to Site > New Site or Manage Sites > tell DW where your local site files are located on your hard drive.
Under Advanced Settings > Local Info, use Links Relative to Document.   Save your site definition settings.
Now when you create a new document & save it, DW will manage your file assets and paths relative to the document and not the site root folder.

  • Music Stutters on slide transition

My slide shows' audio stutters between slides if I use any transition choice other than "None". They all play fine on the computer but stutter in the DVD player (it is a new DVD player).

Here is some advice about encoding and burning that I found in a post by SDMacUser, one of the very knowledgeable posters in this forum:
It is best Not to disturb the encoding process. Set your energy saving controls within system pref's to "never". This will speed things up as well.
Encoding durations depend heavily on the type and clock speed of the CPU as well as available HD space and memory. Keep in mind that the more apps or utilities one opens while encoding, the greater the chances for a multiplexing error somewhere along the line. So my recommendation is to not fuss with your mac while allowing for encoding to take place. Give it time to do its job. On my own mac system/s I set it to encode during night hours when I use the computer the least. And normally when I wake in the AM I'll have a completed Dvd. Yes, encoding can seem to take forever but it's best not to interrupt this process. A word to the wise, be patient. And lastly, use quality media like Verbatim and Maxell. Don't exceed 4x burn speeds (the lower the better in most cases). Many of us also burn from a disk image which is an even better idea since it allows you to test playback with apple's dvd player prior to committing your presentation to Dvd-R.
Btw, there is no better app for burning quality Dvd's (short of apple's DVDSP). Toast may be faster at times on certain types of files but not always better when it comes to quality.
    I hope this helps.

  • Transitions Show as Offline in Media Encoder

    Hello,
Weird problem. when I am exporting a project from Premier Pro CC 2014 if I try to export it via "queue" and opening up Media Encoder when it goes to encode the video it seems like all of my transitions have the giant red media offline screen. (These are simple disolves mind you, nothing complex) If I do an immediate export it exports fine. What is getting lost in translation when it goes to put it in the queue and the separate Media Encoder program?

    Hi Mizzou,
A preliminary search of our database did not turn up any cases that were similar to yours. I will continue to keep an eye out for you about a potential fix. You can also contact support for your issue here: Contact Customer Care

  • Adding Transitions freezes and stutters playback in Preview.

I'm posting this as a new issue. Since I've narrowed down my "stuttering/freezing on playback" problem while in Preview/Edit mode.
This begins to happen as SOON as I add a transition. Whether I add it automatically, or manually.
The clips play fine without transitions in the project and the Event window. These are clips from a Kodak Zi6, I believe shot HD at 60fps, and I'm using NTSC 30fps to create the project. When I "get info" on my clips, the codecs listed are H.264 and AAC, dimensions 1280x720.
When the Movie Project is exported & viewed in QuickTime, it plays smoothly.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, as I'd like to preview my work as I go!
This movie is LESS than one minute long!

    UPDATE - A workaround?
after what you posted about converting the file to the apple codec AIC - it occurred to me to try this.
Put a clip in the project browser - it starts stuttering - with or without transitions.
click on clip and select "clip adjustments". Now when you need to run slow mo you click the "convert clip" button. Do this even though you don't need to slomo the clip and it will come up with "converting whole clip" - this can take a while if the clip/event the clip is from is quite long. Hang in there. Click done. ......and......
    all works perfectly.
It seems like the converter converts the whole event because if you now choose other clips from the event they too work with no problems! So looks like... before you start run the conversion on a clip from all the events you are about to use and then you can work normally...
I've run a test project and now transistions/ green screen/ PiP all work smooth. IS this the workaround we needed?
Do you know if the convertion to AiC changes size or quality? I cant tell at the moment. But it works! (well so far.....)
Please let me know if this works for you too - if so it might be worth starting another thread as so many people are having the stutter problem and i've not seen a workaround yet that's easy to do.
    Anyone?
Apple - we should not need to do this!

  • Why wont my audio/video transitions render in media encoder

when im rendering a project from PP in media encoder the audio/video transitions i added to my project dont show up in the rendered version of the video (the affter affects compositions i added show up though) but when i open the project back up in PP there they are. am i just not applying them correctly, or is there an extra step to link them to the clips or something. im still new to the software so you'll probably have to explain this to me in very basic terms. thanks

I don't use Photoshop for video so am having to guess here, but you say H.264 but not what preset you are using. In PremPro there are something like a 100 prest options for H.264  Try something like Vimeo HD 1080p 29.97, but instead of exporting the entire video, drag the markers under the video preview window, to contain just enough to see if it is working.  That will save you a heap of time.     Can you select VBR 2 pass from the Citrate settings in media encoder?  The Vimeo setting of 5Mbs for the target bitrate should easily give you nice transitions, but you can up that if you like, at the expense of file size.

  • Stuttering magic move transition, has anyone the same problem?

I use Keynote 6 on a brand new macbook pro with retina screen (the most havy one). Has anyone the same problem: a little stuttering of the magic move transitions. It looks like if the movements are carried out on a rough surface. It is a small effect but it gives a low quality appearence.

Thanks for the feedback,Gary. Of course this may be the case, but it doesn't explain why a brand new MacBook Pro does a worse job than a over 3 years old MacBook Air (although the MBP is set at 1680x1050 and the MBA is at 1440x900 default resolution).
I tend to do all transitions at high speed, max. 0.5-0.75 seconds for a transition, often less (0.1-0.4 seconds) for an object build, to get a 'cinematic' effect, as Apple calls it.

  • What is the best setup to encode h264 (1080p) and to avoid stuttering, dropped frames?

    Hello,
What is the best setup with AME to encode h264 (1080p) and to avoid stuttering, dropped frames using a classic video player .I am looking to have the smoothest experience (in fast horizontal motion for ex!).It also can be another format (intra codec’s etc...)it doesn’t matter as long as readable by most players.      Anyone’s to tell his favorites presets for that?
    thanks

I should have included the following:
1.) Why can't I make a silent project in GarageBand? I have to instead find a project with a long enough song, make an "iLife preview" of it (see (2) below), copy it from the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser to the end of the movie, and then open the audio panel and turn the volume to zero. And all this so that video websites don't get confused by a soundtrack that starts in mid-movie.
2.) Why do I have to "render" them by the following process: Double-click a song in the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser. You get a dialog box saying "The project "The Great Race" cannot be used because it was not prepared with an iLife preview. Would you like to open "The Great Race" in GB so you can save it with an iLife preview?" What I don't understand is why this new thing was introduced and why I have to do it via iMovie.

  • Music Stutters when changing tracks encoded using FLAC

When changing tracks encoded with FLAC, the song stutters a bit at the beginning of each song. The rest of the song continues to play fine. It's just at the beginning when changing tracks manually.
These very same tracks played fine with the previous firmware on the iPod and play fine on my MacBook now using iTunes.
Anyone else running into the same thing?? Everything works, but its rather annoying!!!

MPD is VERY touchy when I change the current playing track, or seek.
I've been using ncmpcpp, but I witness the same behavior with other clients too.
Since I've seen other people mention the same stability issues, I was wondering if anyone came up with a solution for this ?
I was hoping to use mpd to build my music db, but I 'skim' through a lot of music, so it's not usable to me right now...
    Will appreciate any help.
    Cheers

Try that link out and try setting it up via user in the alternate setup.  I had issues it running as deamon... This way it will run as a local user and just add it to a start script when you start your .xinitrc or autostart.sh...
