Styling isn't simple

in the above example you have:
a parent container of type VBox
2 children:
    1 of type HBox
    1 of type VBox
obviously the 2 children mentioned above have children, we're not worrie dby these for the purpose of this post, (although in case it holds some weight they are mx:Images and mx:Text objects)
I want the 2 to touch, only on the top (the parent will effectively be repeated with different values) sharing the border, so not a double think line (although this is ok if its unavoidable)
I have tried everything I can think of but cant get it to work. Ideally I dont want to create an entire seperate style object for it, that just seems alot of work for something that should be so simple
please help
TIA

Brilliant, thank you so very much!

  • Accordion effect, need help...

    Heya,
So I want to create an extremely simple accordion effect. I
tried styling the default accordion component but I couldn't remove
the Halo styling to it, so unless someone can tell me how to do
that I'm looking for basic AS to show and hide a particular MC on
    click. Anyone help?
    Thanks!

    Hi Spencer,
Getting away from halo (something I've been working at for
the last three days) isn't simple, but it's definitely doable.
First, I followed the instructions in Flash help on *creating
a new theme.* As part of those instructions, you'll copy two files:
default.as and AccordionHeaderSkin.as. Through trial and error, you
can fiddle with these two files and pretty much completely define
your own colors, fonts, etc. for all components. I changed my open
header to a gradient, and the closed headers to a different
gradient. It has worked much better and more reliably than using
    the getStyle approach.
Search for "theme" and "styles" in help, and follow the
    instructions--they worked for me.
But once you get it all hooked up properly and can see your
changes when you Publish Preview your movie, don't freak out if you
make changes to the .as files that don't show up right away. I
found I had to close Flash and open again before most changes
    appeared.
    Good luck!

  • Can I use iMac's HDD as a second, bootable drive for new PC?

When I replace an old PC with a new PC, I always keep the old HDD around in case I need to boot into it for some reason. I simply plug it in, select it as the boot drive, and it's sort of like using my old PC again.
Can I also do this with my iMac's HDD and a new PC? So I could effectively dual boot between my existing Windows OS on my PC's SSD, and OSX using my old iMac's HDD?
When I do this with two HDDs each using Windows, all the drivers for the new hardware "plug-and-play" the first time I boot with the old HDD, so input and display works. I'm not sure if I'll have the same luxury in this scenario or if I'd need to pre-load new drivers so OSX works with the PC's hardware. My iMac has a AMD (well it was still ATI back in 2009) Radeon HD 4850. I had this same card in an old PC so I would hope the display would still work as well, or worst case scenario I could simultaneously use the iMac HDD with the Radeon 4850 in a PC.
I have a lot of computers sitting around and I'm moving soon, so I want to consolidate what I can so I don't have to take so much with me when I move. My iMac's display is no good (barely functional, definitely not pretty) so I don't want to keep the big iMac around anymore if I can just keep the little HDD.
Of course I back up important files and can always read the HDD from a PC, but I'm interested in seeing if I can still use the drive for booting into OSX.
I'm sure someone's tried to do this before, but my searches turned up with nothing. I'll greatly appreciate any guidance, suggestions, or general thoughts about how I could achieve this. I don't mind getting my hands dirty if a solution exists but isn't simple. Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi, are you talking about removing the drive from the iMac to use in a PC?
If your talking about booting the PC into OSX, then google hackintosh.

  • After partitioning external drive network Time Machine instance can't back up

This is a re-post with additional background information requested by several responders:
I recently added a G-Speed Q RAID array to my MAC PRO to use exclusively for back-up with Time Machine.  I purchased this RAID array from the Apple store, so assume that means it's acceptable to use for this purpose.  Maybe that's a bad assumption on my part.  In any event, it worked great with Time Machine on my MAC PRO.  The G-speed array is connected to my Mac Pro via Firewire 800 port for now.  I am awaiting delivery of an eSATA expansion card for the Mac Pro which I intend to switch to when it arrives.  In any event, it is not configured or capable of acting as an NAS device.  It is a shared external drive on the MAC PRO.
My next step was to share the external device over my hardwire gigabit LAN with my wife's iMAC so she could back-up with Time Machine as well.  It also worked great. Both Macs are connected via hardwire gigabit, supported by an Actiontec Q1000Z router.  The LAN performs flawlessly for all other purposes, including over 30 network devices connected via either hardwire or 802.11n.  Both machines are running Lion 10.7.4.  (not server)
I then started reading posts that suggested the two Time Machine instances would compete for space on the back-up array and eventually it would fill up and I'd have problems.  The solution, everyone says, is to partition the external drive and assign one to each Time Machine back-up.  It makes perfect sense to me.  I did this following the step-by-step instructions (#22) from Pondini's site.  Both partitions are formatted with MAC OS Extended (journaled).  Everything seemed to be working great until the remote client tried to run back-up.  The remote Time Machine instance fails with the "Disk does not support AFP featues" error message.
Current status is as follows, local time machine back-up works fine on its partition.  Remote machine finds and connects to its assigned partition once I provide correct user name and password, but fails while Time Machine is "searching for backup device" with the AFP error message.  The remote (sending) machine is connecting as a dedicated user and not as "Guest".
I can write test files directly to the remote back up partition from either mac and I can read, modify and save files directly to this partition from either mac.
Please let me know if any additional information related to configuration is needed.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In my "dispute" with Pondini in the other thread, I came across some information that will certainly explain things, but not in a good way.
Apparently you cannot use an external drive as a Time Machine repository. People who use Snow Leopard and Lion Server to provide Time Machine services have already discovered this.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3327294
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2472139
It may work better when your eSATA card comes in. My theory is that a Thunderbolt RAID would show up as an internal drive and would be useable as a Time Machine repository. There is a chance that an eSATA card would do that too. You'll find out. Apparently, one of the things you get with Lion Server is a warning pop-up if you try to use an external drive with Time Machine.
While I'm a big fan of Time Machine, I still consider it Apple Black Magic. You can use it, but don't get too clever. I don't like to take chances with backups. Simple is usually better. Time Machine isn't simple, but it is so convenient that I like to ignore the incredible complexity of it.
If the other machine were a notebook with local snapshots I might say you could manually plug it in to do backups. With two iMacs, I would recommend just getting another external drive.

  • Using text as a hyperlink to call a program (Notepad)

I am making a About Dialog which contains some text.
A small part of the text must be a hyperlink (blue and underlined). When clicked, Notepad must open with the license agreement.
This I will do, nothing else (no discussion on this).
    But how to do it?
I could overwrite paint method of the JDialog, but I cannot use easily underlined text with g.drawString...
Next I had the idea of using JLabels. But it would be a lot of assembling the labels and configuring the layout manager.
Then I thought about using subclass of Document with a JTextPane. But I don't know if I can use hyperlinks that way for my purpose.
What do you think about the three ideas, or do you have a solution?

The labels idea seems like the simplest to me. I know there's a way to do hyperlinks in an HTMLEditorPane (don't know if this is exactly the right classname) but it isn't simple, and I have no experience with it myself. I really like your idea of displaying the licence agreement in Notepad though, it gives the licencee a chance to modify it before agreeing to it. Other licences I have agreed to are so rigid, they don't let you change anything.

  • Is there a way to add a number to the items in a playlist?

Is it possible to number the items in a playlist?  For example, I have books in order and I want to add numbers so I know which one to listen to next.

There is some variation in the way that different models of iPods handle listing of audiobooks - specifically those broken into multiple parts (files).  I have one old Nano (2nd gen) and a current model (7th gen) - the latter (correctly) lists complete audio books in the Audiobooks menu, each book then listed as one or more parts (typically further subdivided into chapters).  The older one just has a list of parts (ordered by Name or, if set, Sort Name).
The method that I use to get as consistent listings is possible is to set both Sort Album and Sort Name metadata elements as shown in this example:
    Notes:
This is an anomaly since the actual book title starts with 'A' which iTunes will automatically strip and set the result as the sort name.  Explicitly setting the Sort Name to the full title overrides this.
This is a three-part audiobook (i.e., three files)
This is how I handle series - so these three files (one audiobook) are the 3rd volume of the "Sherlock Holmes" series.  Using 01, 02, 03 rather than 1, 2, 3 allows for series that run to more than 10 titles.
Since the Name values start with "The" iTunes strips this off to automatically create a Sort Name.
Another example of books in a series, where each audiobook is made up of two or more parts
This is the standard I use for (almost) all multi-part books - set the Name value to <title> - Part <part no.> ... note that as in example (4) iTunes automatically strips "The" to generate the Sort Name
This is an exemption to the rule illustrated in example (6) - its a 12 novel sequence, each with an individual title (Name field), published as four audiobooks each split into three parts.  The Sort Album values ensure that the audiobooks themselves are ordered correctly; the Sort Name values put the individual novels in the right order.
I'll freely admit that this isn't simple, and that it took me several rounds of trial-and-error to finalize a scheme that works for me.  Obviously you could achieve very similar results by prefixing Name and Album values with serial numbers - I prefer not to do this for largely cosmetic reasons - I like titles to be "proper" titles, not numbered items.  Turingtest2 has a script on his site that takes a slightly different approach (though fully automated) - I tried this but found some issues with portability across the two iPods that I routinely use for audiobook listening.

  • Themes for 700w?

    Hi,
I just got a 700w and am liking it a lot. When the money starts rolling I'll probably upgrade to a newer Palm. Anyway, I was hoping to find a theme that has a kind of sleek look to it. The iPhone theme looks neat but I'd rather have something that still looks like WinMo. I found this one: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-touchone.html
It's supposed to be WinMo 5 compatible but it seems that I don't have the right NET CF. If I upgrade this will the theme work? I notice that it doesn't support SQVGA. Can anyone recommend a good theme for the Treo that isn't simple changing the color of the Today screen? So many themes out there seem to be changing the background and color of the today screen and that's it.

  • IPhoto 6.0.5 recent Upgrade causing crashes

Recently upgraded to 6.0.5 and am experiencing repeated crashes. Seems to be related to Photoshop. If I open a photo in Photoshop to edit, then save and return to iPhoto, iPhoto crashes. The message box asking if I want to send a report to Apple doesn't even stay open long enough to send the report, before it to crashes. It progressed to the point where I couldn't even open the photos in iPhoto's preview or edit window without it crashing. Now I can't even seem to view the pictures that were edited in Photoshop in iPhoto. It also seems to effect an entire roll, even if some of photos in the roll weren't opened in Photoshop. Any other photo from a different roll works fine. This all worked fine prior to the upgrade.
    Any ideas?

This thread seems to be the same as the one where Photoshop Elements was isolated as a participant in the crashes. ICC profiles or color space or something is missing from the file when it gets saved by Photoshop Elements. I'm sure there's a way Photoshop can do this too.
You might want to use ColorSync Utility or some other application to assign a color space/profile to all the photos in that roll, and see if the problem still occurs. As far as I can tell, success is iffy but then again doing or understanding this isn't simple. It took me a while to get my head around it, and I'm still confused.

  • Using footnotes as a hyperlink to supporting pdf documents

How do I create footnotes that are hyperlinked to source pdf files in combined binder?  I recently completed a 50 page report with 65 footnotes for a consulting firm.  The consulting firm took my pdf report and used the footnotes as a hyperlink to the source backup documents.  they then used the source documents with my report and combined all the files - some 2,000 pages - into one binder.  So now I want to know how to create a reeport using the footnotes as a hyperlink to the source document.
I am using a very current iMac running OS X, and using in Adobe X Pro.

The labels idea seems like the simplest to me. • Disappointed from Nokia N97

HI i purchases a Nokia N97 about a month or two ago. i picked the white version and at the same time my dad picked the black version. over this past month i had so many problems with it such as shutting off for no reason quitting applications for no reason, having a black screen for a few second, etc.
i went to the Nokia Flagship store and they took my phone to diagnose it. They replaced some vibration sensor which did not help at all and my phone kept on having all of those problems. Yesterday i went to the store and they replaced my phone in a new one, now this phone is also messed up. most of the time it gives me this error message: "disk error - cannot complete write retry or data will be lost"
I'm really getting sick of this phone because I'm paying alot more for it since i need to drive to the store and waste so much of my time.
As i said before my dad has the black version and has non of these problems and errors he's runs smoothly.

Look, if your phone’s a lemon take it back and demand replacement. If the store will only offer to fix it, contact Nokia (your phone is still under warranty) and see if they will replace it for you. If they offer to repair, accept the offer if you want to keep the phone (they will send you a UPS label for return, so you won’t have to drive to the store again). If you don’t, sell it and count your losses and move on. There are options for you if you wish to use them. Sometimes life isn’t simple. The people here that kindly offer tech support and help for all manner of problems do so as a kindness and willingness to help others. They are not employees of Nokia, just people like you and me. The only difference between them and you, to paraphrase John Lennon, is that to them there are no problems, only solutions. This is a support forum, not a mope forum. If, as you say, you came here with absolutely no desire to receive help from forum members, but merely to gripe, then I would suggest you find a place more suitable to unload your angst and self-pity.

  • Security settings for my network

Is WPA-Personal really nessesary? Will WEP keeps out intruders. I mean we have devices that only connect Wi-fi by WEP, but WPA is stronger.
What would be so risky about putting it to WEP?

WEP has been cracked. It has a flaw that lets people break the key. It will keep out people who are just scanning for an open port. But if someone is targeting your wireless network and has the right tools, they can break WEP in a short amount of time.
At one security seminar, an FBI team demonstrated how they could break into a WEP network in under three minutes. It isn't simple to do, but it is doable. WPA is much more secure.
MAC filtering and hiding the SSID are two more ways that you can make it harder for amateurs, but you won't stop a person that knows how to use the right tools.

  • What exactly does the folder "Album Artwork" contain/do?

In the iTunes Library folder is a sub-folder called "Album Artwork". I am wondering what this folder is actually for? Does it save the actual artwork? It only contains itc files, so how would this work? If this is true, why are artworks not embedded in the actual song file?
As you can see , I am confused and would greatly appreciate any input!
    Thanks!

3.5Gb??? How big is your library? My entire Album Artwork folder is less than 1% of the size of my iTunes Music folder. If yours is significantly larger then perhaps the artwork folder contains the remnants of multiple libraries. Each of the Download and Cache folders contains a single folder with the same GUID which is connected to my Library. A new library would have a new GUID so presumably a different set of folders. If you have more that one set of folders of this type then delete those which are inactive. Alternatively wipe the entire lot and rebuild it from your embedded art or the store.
"Unembedding" art isn't simple as there is no way to manually link to the download folder. If iTunes doesn't find a match you are limited to embedding art that you paste in and you can't get iTunes to look for store art if the file already has some, so you run the risk of throwing away what you have and having to find it again just to see if iTunes can do it for you.

  • Wrappers

Looks like XMLBeans is very powerful and elegant technology for "correct"
XML handling that has no equivalent competitor today. It's strange that so
many people ask what is difference from JDOM/DOM/SAX/Castor etc...
    Questions:
    1. The wrappers that implement XSD-derived interfaces seem to be built
dynamically from magic .xsb files. What motivated this architectural
decision (versus generating java/class files) ?
    2. What is the performance difference (parsing speed, memory usage, number
of objects) between using generated strongly-typed wrappers vs. using
    provided XmlObject type hierarchy ?
    thanks

What is a wrapper class? I guess I'm just looking for a broad, yet simple definition with a illustrative example. You posted a broad yet simple definition in your original post and claimed you didn't understand it. (I like examples too.)
Sorry if that is quite demanding. I came across the term as I was reading about Java I/O for the first time, and I have done some other reading, but I think it is always best to hear it from the perspective of a programmer in a practical context as opposed to a dictionary or a wikipedia article (no offense to you wikifanatics out there). The definition you posted sounds like the Facade pattern to me. I tend to think of the Decorator pattern as being wrappers, and I wouldn't have given the definition you posted at all. And I suspect you were reading about the Decorator pattern in that tutorial, too. A ZipOutputStream can wrap any kind of OutputStream, but generally it isn't simpler than them. In fact often it's more complex. So perhaps it's just one of those terms that different people use for different things.

  • ACR 64bit processing multiples files at a time - performance

    Hi all -
I recently built a new CPU with a raid 0 drive and a core i7 processor. The first few times I processed photos in ACR hosted in Photoshop 64 it would process 4 photos at a time which seems like it would optimally utilize all 8 cores. Recently I've noticed that sometimes it will process 4 photos at a time but usually it will do 3 at a time. I can't consistantly get it to run 4 at a time any more which makes me think photoshop isn't getting as many resources as it could/ should.
Does anyone have an idea how acr decides how many raw images it will grab at once when it is processing out to jpgs? OR how to improve ACR processing performance?
    Thanks,

There are definitely differences between 32 and 64 bit builds.   I have observed this myself.  I have 8 processor threads (2 actual cores with hyperthreading in each of two separate Intel Xeon DP 5060 3.2 GHz processors).
I just tested ACR 6.3, with Photoshop CS5 on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 8 GB, with ATI Radeon HD 4670 video card...
Photoshop CS5 12.0.3, File - Open, Canon EOS-40D raw file conversion to upsampled resolution of 6144 x 4096 pixels, some lens corrections, sharpening and noise reduction enabled.  Same exact image and settings for both tests.
32 bit Photoshop running 32 bit Camera Raw:  13.8 seconds, Task Manager shows less than 25% load.
64 bit Photoshop running 64 bit Camera Raw:  6.0 seconds, Task Manager shows 100% load.
    This is easily repeatable.
Computer shows 5% to 8% load just sitting here (I'm playing music, and this forum chews up cycles too).
I'm forced to conclude, despite what you wrote above MadManChan2000, that Camera Raw is using only 1 or 2 of 8 available threads in the 32 bit build, all 8 threads in the 64 bit build.
Can you explain the difference please?  Is it possible the logic isn't simple, and while the 32 bit Camera Raw may use multiple threads for some things, that noise reduction or lens corrections aren't using all threads?

Problem is..some people get a little over excited by the anticipation and wet their pants.
So you're saying that having something ready before announcing its release isn't simple?  These dumb posts?
Look, Adobe announced that there would be an update in October 2013.  It is now Oct 25th, 6 days from November.  Its pretty obvious people are going to be asking where the update is.  If you can't see how announcing an update after they have done all the testing needed to release it would be simple, then what is simple?  Don't tell me its a complex thing, because its not. You finish the update testing, then announce it, then release it.
Any time you announce something is going to be released in the Month of October 2013 people expect it to be released in the first week or at least the middle of the month, not the very end.  Its simple.
