SU 2006-003

Hi Earlybirds,
How is it going. Piece of Cake or ???. I'll check out BBR/ATM and see if I find anything there.

haku, try running a permissions repair from root & see if that sorts out those issues. I just ran the updates with zero problems so far. I have a bunch of startup items so I closed out of all apps, ran the update, & then upon reboot I ran a permissions repair. It found one thing but that may have been unrelated to the update. Logged out of root & back in as myself & all is well! One thing I didn't do that I suggest everyone else does before running updates is repair your permissions before you update. There is a slight chance that damaged permissions could damage an install & thus break your computer. Hope this helps anyone who is still having issues.

  • MacBookPro Freezes after Installing Latest Security Update 2006-003

After downloading and installing the latest security update 2006-003, MacBook Pro freezes when trying to do anything. Seems to do ok in safe mode but did freeze when trying to verify disk with Disk Utility. (did not try to repair as I am out of town at a motel without Tiger disks). Any suggestions before calling apple?
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Since my post, I think I have solved the problem. At least MyMacBook is working ok so far. What I did is started up in safe mode (for the third time) then I went through the "Library" and looked for stuff that looked like it wouldn't work on a MacBook. This included some Norton Utility things. Also went through preferences and Application Support and did the same thing. By the way I had transferred all this stuff from my old Mac using the transfer app and connecting the two with firewire.
Anyway, it's been working for about an hour. I'll keep this post open for a couple of days to see if it keeps working.

  • Re-Install After 2006-003 SU

OK so having installed the 2006-003 SU which royal screwed my system up hanging immediately after startup (removing start-up items, disk repair permission repairs all had no effect) i decided to cut my losses and reinstall using the Archive and Install method.
Installation took an hour or so then hangs at at finishing installation (Running iweb application installer script) Restart the machine and it launches the second part of installation again (which again hangs at finishing installation) - ejected the disk and closedn the installer - which then just launches itself again and demands i re-insert the disk! How can i quit the installer and just boot the system up normally

Haha - "while your first question may be the most pertinent, you may or may not realize it is also the most irrelevant."
I booted up using the isntall disk and copied the stuff i needed to my ipod. Re-installed and it's working now.

  • Rosetta crashes after Security Update 2006-003

The other day I installed Security Update 2006-003, and now a number of PowerPC applications crash the machine.
It's a funny crash, the mouse keeps moving and the capslock key goes on and off, but that's it. Nothing on the screen animates or updates. Windows will not move, dock does not do anything. cannot force quit or command-tab. The only option is to do a hard reset or hard shutdown.
    I found this article:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060517111924138&query=rosetta+crash
    I hope it's fixed soon!
    Matt

    Hello!
I'm glad I found your post -- a brand new Intel Core Duo 20" iMac is doing the same for me after Security Update 2006-003.
What I've found on this end so far is that Norton AntiVirus 10 for Macintosh seems to aggravate the problem. I had a system that was running fine (complete with NAV10) before applying the 2006-003 update. At first I thought the problem might be due to user error--maybe NAV wasn't quite ready for Intel Macs, but Symantec says it is after you get version 10.1 from LiveUpdate. (I did.)
I finally had to erase the hard drive and reinstall the entire operating system from the provided restore discs. After I did that and got the latest software updates, I tried again with NAV. It still caused the same problem...a complete lockup.
The first time around, only NAV seemed to cause problems. Other PowerPC-native programs running in Rosetta seemed to be OK. This second time around any PowerPC-native app running in Rosetta (after the install of NAV10) would lock the machine up completely, except for the mouse pointer. (I have also noticed that the machine still responds to being pinged over the network, and that Apple Remote Desktop 3 says it is online. So the crash isn't stopping everything from working.)
So my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with Security Update 2006-003 and Rosetta, and it may be made worse by NAV10 for Macintosh. In any case, I'm going to steer clear of this update for now.

  • PPC-iMac: Black screen on restart after Security Update 2006-003

Did the Security Update 2006-003 this morning. On restart the screen is showing the grey Apple-logo for several seconds. Then it goes black, with the prompt in the upper left corner: "localhost/root:" Vent running in high gear. Entering unix-commands is possible, but no graphic interface coming up. How to fix this? Don't want to reinstall the whole system.
    iMac G5 20" PowerPC iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm having basically the same problem with my PowerBook 1Ghz Aluminum 17". After running the latest security update and latest iLife patches using SU, my system boots to the local Darwin consol login. I can see my HD and all it's files, but I can't get the machine to boot back into GUI mode. Safe mode doesn't work.
This was a newly refreshed system running 10.4.6 and ONLY iLife installed - nothing funky and no 3rd-party apps other than those pre-installed in 10.4.x.
I've booted with the 10.4 DVD, repaired permissions (again) and repaired the drive (reported not needed). Zapping the PRAM doesn't help.
Perhaps I have a lemon because I have had problems with this machine in the past, but only when installing major system updates between 10.3-10.4 with non-apple RAM. I don't think this is the culprit this time as the machine has been functioning fine since the last fresh 10.4 install (with some OWC RAM).
Any ideas? Anyone have tips for what can be done in the console to repair the system?

  • My MBP Still freezes after deleting SU 2006-003

    Hi Guys,
Like many others I did the SU 2006-003 on Friday, and found my MBP freezing up on start-up, after deleting the Version Cue CS2 from the start-up items I still got the freezing effect, so I called Apple and they said that my MBP had an option to reinstall the 10.4.5 (my DVD version) without loosing my user preferences, so I did that. And all my problems where solved, and then I did a software update of all the updates except the SU 2006-003, to my surprise the MBP still freezes. So I came to the conclusion that both SU 2006-003 and QT 7.1 came out on the same day, but everyone thought that SU 2006-003 was the problem. When all along was the QT 7.1 causing the problem, both QT 7.1 and Adobe Suite apps run in the background at start-up, apparently they contradict each other now, so I tried reinstalling Adobe Suite CS2, and I can't even think about installing Version Cue, cause that freezes the MBP right away, during the installation!!!.
So after doing a save mode and deleting Version Cue (again), I go back to my normal system (witch now is 10.4.6) and try to run the rest of the Adobe Suite apps, to my surprise all work well except the Adobe Acrobat, the main app for PDF's, once I double click that App the MBP freezes up. So now I'm tempted again to reinstall the 10.4.5 and not do the QT 7.1 update as well.
Can anyone give me a better solution? This one takes to much time and a great deal of concentration, cause not all of my apps work well after this, so I have to reinstall them again, mainly Parallels, Missing sync, Documentstogo, Backupbuddy, and others. It's a real pain.

No, I don't use the Adobe suite. I do have the Adobe Reader, Photoshop Elements 4.0, and Acrobat 6.x installed. They all run without a problem as does Microsoft Office 2004 X.
Please be careful about installing or moving anything from an old system onto the Intel Mac unless you know it's a universal binary and compatible. Default Folder 2.0.x is not compatible. Get Default Folder 3.0 (just released.)
    Here's some more related info:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers. These versions are not universal binaries and will not work on Intel-Macs. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the only current choice is USB Overdrive. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (does not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • Mac CRASHES on restart after Security Update 2006-003 and QuickTime

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
i've just done TODAY's software update... and now when i boot up in to OS X, it is fine for about 10 seconds, until my Window Partition mounts, and the whole system freezes... does anyone else have this problem...
[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; retitled ]

Similar problem here. I installed the latest security update via software update. It rebooted twice and then the Aqua "starting Mac OS X" splash screen appears, the progress bar jumps to 100% very quickly and then the system goes into what looks like sleep mode (the power buttons dim like when it's asleep). It won't wake up after that or restart by holding the power button. Have to unplug it!
At first, I tried a couple times using the OPT key to try and boot from another disk and it ignored it and went to sleep as above. Then, I tried using the SHIFT key to try and boot into safe mode and the screen stayed black and it didn't seem to be doing anything. After that, I tried OPT again and it booted successfully. Now it seems to be booting normally again. Try booting with SHIFT key held down and then reboot normally to see if that works.
This is very, very bad. I am afraid.

  • Security Update 2006 003 & QT 7.1. Any fixes yet?

This update did not affect my G5. However, both of my TiPB G4's after installing this update & QT 7.1, had major browser issues. Safari, Firefox, Camino, Opera, Omniweb, Netscape, Mozilla, Flock, Internet Exploder... all of them have the same problem. I can surf the web for 20 or 30 seconds, then crash. If I go to check my email on Yahoo! or MSN, crash immediately. I ended up doing an archive and install and updated everything except this particular update and QT 7.1. so that I could use my computers. Has anyone found a solution for any of this yet? I know there has been widespread issues connected with the last Security Update. Surely I am not the only one having these particular problems. I have never had a problem with any update I have ever done. I repair my permissions, ect. I have tried trashing the prefs, you name it, I probably have tried it. They are working beautifully now, but therein looms the update every day wanting to be installed... Any thoughts, suggestions, opinions would be appreciated. Quick

I have had unexpected quit problems with Explorer and safari since the same last main update. multiple problems. Done all the suggested fixes, and same problems remain. Have the latest firmware updates, last 2 days finally spent with Tech Tools Pro, did volume repairs, showed successfull, but safari problems remain. All of my internet settings are correct, cannot tirn javaxcript on, or it unexpectedly quits the minute I try to logon to my earthlink web email account which requires javascript, done cocktail too many times in past couple of weeks. I cannot backup as my LaCie 500GB Big Extreme external disk was working fine until software update, then it disappeared and will not connect using irewire or USB. I can get my home page on safari, but will not go to many link, or 'next' pages. My mail program seems to be working fine. All my caches are cleaned multiple times, cookies, etc. Quicken 2005 was not finding and saving files right last either...going crazy!

  • Security Update 2006-003 & Quicktime 7.1.1

Hey folks. I'm running an intel Core Duo...and was wondering about these two software updates. Last time I downloaded a software update, my computer wasn't booting properly. Anyone download these? If so - are the results positive?
    Janet

    Hey Janet,
I've had similiar issues.. not really sure what it was either. As soon as I downloaded both, I clicked restart and well, I got a blue screen. Just blank. Turned it off, pressed what I needed to press, then just got gray. Had to do the extreme p,r, [outta the manual] thing to get it to come up... and it did. Since then, I've had some other boot issues too, please read my thread Brother MFC-420CN.

  • Quicktime 7.1 update and Security Update 2006-003 (Intel)

I have been avoiding these software updates after reading the threads about the problems. Should I wait for the next update or will I eventually have to do these updates? Anybody else avoiding these?

    Mark-
It seems my problem was Adobes Version Que update, not my security update. If you have Version Que and run into booting problems after your updates, boot in Safe Mode and delete the sucker.
This problem drove me crazy because I'm on the eve of a huge job tomorrow, and my MBP is key in it.
Thanks for all those support postings out there guys.

  • Security Update 2006-003 broke my panther!

I updated last night with the panther version of the update, and now basically every app crashes a few (less than 5) seconds after launch. Adding to that, when I start up the computer what happens is:
    - I get the apple logo and progress wheel below it
    - I get the blue background with the progress bar loagind services, etc
    - I get a black shell-like screen, almost as if I had logged in to Single user mode.
I was trying to check out the logs but the console App crashes instantly after launch.
Any Ideas on how to recover without reinstalling Mac OS?
    Thanks
    Henrique

    Henrique,
I know the weirdness of you speak regarding the boot process, shell screen, etc.... Keychain related.
Do you use a wireless network?
    If you do:
I had always had problems with Keychain since AirPort 4.2 software update.
If you can boot into safe mode then open Keychain. You'll see there is "System" and "Login" or "your user name" keychains. Select system, if you see the name of your wireless network (same name as listed under the Airport icon), unlock it (you'll be asked for the root users password), then select it and click on the delete icon. It will ask are you sure (yes), then it will ask again for roots password.
After this close keychain and reboot.
Run Command - S, then FSCK -Y (FSCK -FY if your disk is Jounaled) and it'll clear any anomalies with the disk (hopefully) then once your back up, select Keychain again and do the afore mentioned process. You'll have to do this process before you do a reboot.
Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps...

  • Odd crash after SU 2006/QT 7.1 - NOT VersionCue

I started a thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=482611&tstart=0 because I thought it was just Mail misbehaving. But there's a deeper problem: something to do with com.apple.security, that occurs when (I think) QT 7.1 is installed on my Intel iMac.
Here's the critical bit of the crash log:
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xb363f560

A similar error occurs when QT7.1 and SU 2006-003 are installed, on launching keychain access or trying to send mail. And it's all users on the machine, not just me. I've tried a whole bunch of things, including deleting the usual mail suspects, com.apple.security.whatever, and I have nothing in the Startup items. Everything else I've tried seems to be fine, it's just those two applications. And I think it occurs after updating to QT7.1, but I can't prove that yet. Maybe on Friday I'll look at installing SU and not QT; in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas?

I may be experiencing a similar problem - I have one application (FontDoctor 6) that will not launch without a crash and an HP Color LaserJet 3800dn network printer that will crash any application if you select it to print - all other printers work fine. Our WinXP and Win2K machine print to the HP ok.
I was running 10.3.9 and the printer and all applications worked fine.
I purchased the 10.4.3 Tiger retail upgrade disk, backed up all important data, ran Disk Utility until it ran clean and then installed. After install I ran Software Update and am now at 10.4.6. After Software Update FontDoctor crashes on launch every time and am unable to print to that one printer. I have noticed that other threads comment on HP printers causing problems, but have seen them referenced only to OS'es 10.2 and 10.3 - not 10.4.
I have also ran Disk Utility again and it comes up clean.
The crash log from launching FontDoctor:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS2 in Macbook Pro

During installation of Adobe Photoshop CS2, the installer runs and freezes in the midst. There is no way of installing Adobe Photoshop CS2 with intel processor. Full reinstallation of Mac OSX doesn't help. Running disk utility doesn't help either. Problems occurred with or without installing of Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Any comments?

Edwin, thanks for the input, and I do apologize. You are right. I should be easier with which to live. There are two major problems out there right now. That is also part of the problem. We are not used to two problems in our domain.
I own 20 Mac's in my office, and I only did these updates on my MacBook Pro 17 inch and my G5 Dual 2.3 Ghz machine that has two 30-inch Cinema Displays. I had both problems on my MacBook Pro, and the G5 had the reboot glitch. I won't update the other machines untill these problems are resolved by the OEMs.
Of the two major hiccups out there, this link indicates Quicktime's update is the source of the inability to restart machines, fixed by deleting startup items, I believe. I had this reboot problem also.

Accrobat's freezing the system, the question at hand, is a result of the Security Update, fixed by rolling back to a pre-Security Update state using Archive & Install re-installation of the OS. Archive & Install does not erase your files or network settings.
Apple has released two products that fouled these systems. Bad Quality Assurance I think. I am not sure if the Security Update problem is an Apple or an Adobe software problem, i.e., Adobe may have not followed some software guidance. I am certain both companies are aware of the problem, but I am uncertain of the fix for Acrobat. We probably do need to update for security, but I can't live without Acrobat. So I will wait it out without the Security Update.

  • Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional in Macbook Pro

After installation of Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional, running the software freezes the whole system. Updating of Adobe Acrobat Professional to version 7.07 doesn't help.. Full reinstallation of Mac OSX doesn't help. Running disk utility doesn't help either. Problems occurred after installing of Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional can run smoothly before installing Apple Security Update 2006-003(intel). Any comments?
