Su command in terminal will not accept correct password

I have set up the root account and can log into it from normal login pane "other".
However, if I open a terminal window and type either "su" or "su root" it asks for the password. I enter the correct root password but it just says "sorry". Isn't su supported?

just discovered another strange thing. I enabled root long time ago and don't remember how I did it. I just followed a tip from somewhere. I thought I would go thru this again and see if I could reset the password there. The tips I find for snow leopard all say
1. Open Directory Utility in its new home, which is /System/Library/CoreServices.
2. Unlock the application by clicking the padlock icon and entering your Administrator login.
3. Select Edit » Enable Root User.
4. Choose Edit » Change Root Password, and choose a password for the root user.
in 10.6.7 there is no Edit
Something has been changed.
Tomorrow I'll try this on the imac which is still 10.6.6

  • Blackberry Classic Will Not Accept Correct Password

My Blackberry Classic would not accept my password. The same password I have been using for months. It said it would wipe the data after 8 tries and that I was on my 5th try. However, no matter how many times I inputted my password, it stayed at 5 tries. I tried several attempts at cycling power, completing a back-up and restore, I tried the resetting the password from Blackberry protect website and all with no avail. I even did an OS upgrade with no luck! Ultimately, I had to wipe the phone and start over with a restore. I felt lucky I was able to back up the device prior to wiping it.
I would hope blackberry would see this as a critical issue and get a patch out to address it.  Major pain in the butt!

    Hi there,
Not sure if this will help you however I had similar issues recently connecting my iBook G3 Clamshell to my wireless network. I ended up changing the settings on my router from 802.11 b/g/n to 802.11 b/g & it connects perfectly (via WPA) now.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrade from 2007 to 8.8, upgrade wizard will not accept correct password

Hi, I'm trying to upgrade several databases from 2007 to 8.8 SP00 PL17
I have been successful in several. But I have one database where, in the upgrade Wizard, despite the fact that I am putting in the correct username and password, the status will not change from "Not Ready" to "Ready"
I have tried two different super-users, including manager.
I know the passwords are correct, because when i try to log onto that database in SAP, if I deliberately put in a wrong username/password, it tells me the username/password is incorrect. If i put in the correct username/password, it tells me I need to upgrade.
But if i use that same username/password combo in the Upgrade Wizard, the status stays at "Not Ready" and as I have said, I've already upgraded several databases successfully, so i don't think its an environment issue.
    Suggestions?

I figured it out. I tried to detach the database in SQL and saw there was an active connection to the database from WITHIN SQL. I killed the connection and the upgrade wizard took the password no problem.

  • Airport Extreme will not accept correct password.

Installed 10.4 on an iBook G4.
Connect to the same wireless network as every other computer using the correct password.
Airport, astoundingly says 'incorrect password' over and over.
Tried what others have said in forums. Putting a $ in front of it. Changing to WEP/HEX
But the password is WPA and it works on other iBook, other airport, a Macbook Pro.
It's not the password that's the problem. I reset the router, I did a bunch of other fixes.
The only thing I can guess is that I have to update 10.4 to 10.4.11 using an ethernet connection
because of some deficit in 10.4's ability to recognize passwords. But I have another iBook with 10.4
and it has no airport problems. There is nothing wrong with the Airport on this iBook.
There has to be a concrete explanation for this.

  • Turn Off Firmware Password will not accept correct password

    Hello communtiy,
A while back I set a Firmware Password on my 15" MacBook Pro Early 2011 and have used it with great success. Now however I wish to turn it off and am having difficulties doing so. The problem is as follows:
I restart my Mac, press and hold ALT to enter the drive selection screen, enter the Firmware Password, and select the Recovery Partition.
Once the screen starts I select utilities -> Firmware Password Utilities and select "Turn Off Firmware Password..." I am promted to enter my old password, which I do, at which point I get the red error message: "The password is incorrect."
As you can see the password should be correct as I entered the ultility window using it, but it isn't accepted by the tool. I've tried every other conceivable option, such as my admin password, old passwords I no longer use, etc. all to no avail.
I receive the same message when trying to simply change the Firmware Password.
Might there be a problem with special characters? My password uses alpha numeric values as well as two special characters: ? and ,
The system currently runs OS X 10.8.2
Any help in solving this issue would be greatly appriciated!

Ah, I didn't know they could. In that case I will see if I can get an appointment. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. Would be great if I could work this out over the weekend.

  • Ipad will not accept wifi password

My ipad will not connect to my home wifi internet,it will not accept the password which I have checked many times to make sure it is correct,
    can anyone help.

Hi Diavonex Thank you for your reply, Ive tried what you suggested but it hasnt made any difference, although the wireless connection complains my password is wrong, its possible ive put in the wrong email address but when the box to connect to wifi comes up on the ipad screen it no longer gives you the option to enter both email & password, only password, ive tried setting the ipad wireless network settings to factory default but it doesnt work the connection settings are still there & they have a padlock which im assuming means you can not delete them, do you know how I can either delete the wireless network settings & start again or when the ipad wants to connect to the wifi network how to bring up the box with the options to put in both email address & password.

Apple ID has my old email address. It will not allow me to change the address and will not accept my password or ID questions.   I recently upgraded to OSX Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also have an Apple ID that works with iTunes and would like to keep it as my primary.

To change the iCloud ID on your devices you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted (if using iOS 7), then sign back in with your current ID.
If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, you will have to temporarily recreate it in order to delete the existing account.  To do this, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

How can I download Adobe Reader if it will not accept my password?

I have spent more than 3 hours (over 2 on your ask the expert where I waited forever and got about 5 minutes of Santos' time!)  He transferred me to this area where there is no one to help me.  I can't adjust my thermostat until I update my adobe reader and can't do that because your website will not take my password.  However, adobe.com will take it.  So what the hell do I do?????

  • After downloading 5.0 , it will not accept my password

After downloading update 5.0 The i-pod will not accept my password. Is there a standard password?

No.  There is no standard/defaults passcode.  I assume you are talking abut the lock-screen passcode. If so, just restore the iPod from backup. If iTunes asks for a passcode and you can't enter the passcode, place the iPod in recovery mode and then restore. For recovery mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore

A Safe Mode boot may help ...
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
