Sub Events?

I love this new Events grouping of photos, but am now wondering if I can do more with it.
At the moment I have 2 events which have sub-events within them:
1. Spain & Portugal Trip, I went on a 14 day trip to 8 different cities. At the moment I am separating them into 8 different events so I could go to see the photos of each city quickly.
2. Wedding. There were 3 days of functions and parties, and I now separate them into 3 different events.
Is it possible to group these together into one major event with sub events to easily identify them? I would like my Spain and Portugal photos to be kept together as a single event, but would like them separated as individual cities.
With the old iPhoto, I used folders to do this. The folder carries the major event name, and the albums within them carry the different cities I went to.
Anyone with ideas on how I can do this with events?
One idea I have is to make a smart album that brings together these events, but I'm sure there is a way I haven't thought of.

II would like my Spain and Portugal photos to be kept together as a single event, but would like them separated as individual cities.
With the old iPhoto, I used folders to do this. The folder carries the major event name, and the albums within them carry the different cities I went to.
It is the same now -- merge all the Spain and Portugal photos into an event and then make a folder for Spain and a folder for portugal, then an album for each city moving the city albums into the country folders. There are no sub events (just like there were no sub rolls before) but albums and folders are still exactly the same.
Assigning Key words is a another way to separate the photos - if you use key words you can use smart albums to display the photos

  • Is there a way to create sub-folders or sub-events

I like iPhoto very much but my big complaint has always been that there is no way to create a sub folder or sub event. Or has this changed and I just can't see how to do it.
I have about 6,000 pictures in my iPhoto library and a large number of them are "Home and Family". What I really want is to be able to create folders or events within the "home and Family" folder or event. So for example I open the Home and Family event (or folder) and there are sub folders for each year or each part of the family etc. Organizing and looking for photos would be far easier if this is possible.

I think I must be going senile. I tried dragging an existing album/folder into another but it will not go in. I tried creating a new folder then dragging it to an existing folder. That wouldn't go in. I tried selecting the folder I want as the parent folder then creating a new folder. That was created outside and I can't get it into the parent folder. I tried creating an empty folder on the desktop and dragging it into the pictures of the parent folder. That didn't work.
I don't know what else to try.
I realize I may be asking a stupid question but can somebody please tell me how to actually put one folder inside another?

  • How to move your b-rolls into (sub-event folder) separate folders or smart collection inside the same event?

When ever you create an event how can you create folders inside the event for different folders of b-roll?  The reason why I ask is becuase when you create events, there becomes way too many events making a clutter.  I have tried to cut, copy, import, and other ways after creating a smart collection or folder inside an event to create, I guess to say a sub-event inside and event.  But it will only copy the b-roll into the main event only, not the folders or smart collections.  An example would be in class you will have several events for projects, but I want to have one event that is broken up into several folders or smart collections for each project.  Instead of having all 10 of your events open and displayed.  This way you can create an Event Folder named Class Projects, then open up the Class Projects event folder and inside you can have several folders for each of the separate b-rolls for each certain project.  I am wanting to do this instead of having 10 different kinds of b-roll footage all in one event, which is difficult to search through.

Actually you CAN create folders INSIDE an Event to place keyword/smart/anaysis colletions in.
Remember, you can apply Favorite/Rejected tags to whole clips, as well as ranges inside of clips.  The same is true of keywords.

  • Can I make sub-events in iPhoto? Can I delete originals of imported photos?

    1) Is there any way I can make sub-events? I have pictures of family members, grouped by one event per member. Is it possible to have a Family event, and then sub events for each member? Is this better addressed through albums?
    2) When I download an image from the web to my hard drive and later import it to iphoto, can I delete the originally saved file without affecting the image's place in iphoto?

No - there are no sub events - events are time based not subject based
Is this better addressed through albums?
Yes - or keywords and smart albums - what you want is a family folder with albums (smart or otherwise) for each member
    2) When I download an image from the web to my hard drive and later import it to iphoto, can I delete the originally saved file without affecting the image's place in iphoto?
Yes - assuming that you are using the default (and highly recommended) "copy items to the iPhoto library" preference being checked (if it is not then you can not delete the "original")
It is not a bad idea to back up your originals and also you should make regular backups of the iPhoto library - and use Old Toad's library6.iPhoto database file backup very often while you are loading and editing photos

  • Are sub events within events possible?

I briefly searched and did not find anyone asking the exact same question.
I am wondering if there is a way to make sub-events within events. I am not a fan of using the folders very much, and it seems like this should be possible in events, it fits the whole concept of "events"
    For example:
    Main Event: California Trip
    SubEvent: Disneyland
    SubEvent: Beach
    SubEvent: Winery
Basically, I love using events, but I don't want an event with 500 pictures in it covering a whole week trip. On the other hand, things get extremely cluttered if you have 7 individual events on your main event page for one trip. I have 300 events, and lots of those are trips broken into 5-10 events.
If this is not possible, I sure hope someone in software development is thinking about it... : )

Yes it is possible to make folders within other folders. Select a Folder then go File -> New Folder or drag a folder to another one.
    These are my categories:
Have you considered using Keywords for these categories?
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 25k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Can we create a sub Event within the main Event in iPhoto?

I would like to reduce the amount of Events I have showing in iPhoto, to one Event for one catogory and then create sub events within this main Event.
    For example.
    Create 'Holidays' for Main Event
Then various sub Events within 'Holidays' showing destinations for each holiday with the photos.

  • Halting the Batch Engine within sub events

I'm trying to fail the batch engine from within a sub event. Here's the steps that I'm trying to accomplish:
    1. Drop file in OpenBatch
    2. Trigger Batch Load Script with BATCHENG initialization.
    3. Batch Load Script triggers FDM subevents "up to load"
    4. "ImportAction" or a sub event (i.e. AftImport) has a conditional script that tests a condition. If the condition fails, then the Batch Load Script should be failed.
    5. Error is listed in BatchEngine log
Now I have found a way to fail the Batch Engine and write the log by adding the following statement to the Adapter LOAD event. The 'Exit Function' command effectivly kills the batch loader and then an error is written.
'Check Load Process Status For Import Process Status.
'If Import Failed, Then checksums were invalid. Used to prevent Batch Loader from pushing load
    If API.MaintenanceMgr.fProcessStatus(API.POVMgr.PPOVLocation, API.POVMgr.PPOVCategory, API.POVMgr.PPOVPeriod).lngStatus = 2 Then
         'Log a CheckSum Error
objR.strErrDesc = "File Checksum does not match FDM. File was not fully loaded."
         objR.lngErrCode = 99999
         objR.blnIsErr = RES.FDMTrue
         Exit Function
    End If
But I would prefer to run it in the ImportAction or other sub event. Or is there a better way to return an error to the engine indicating that a condition has failed and the process should be halted.

    Hi Nate
What is the condition that you want to test for?
We have had clients where we did a lot of pre-validating of the source files before importing to FDM, we handled that in the custom batch script created to launch the batch engine, e.g.
    1. Check file header for ceratin conditions
    2. Check record count matches control total
    3. Check period exists in the file
    4. Check TB balances per entity
We dropped the files into a 'SourceFiles' folder and they were only copied in to the OpenBatch folder if they passed all the pre-tests, that way only files we knew were in the correct format were attempted to process.
It also meant that we could easily distinguish issues with the source file from issues with the mapping logic.
    Hope this helps

  • Event and........s sub-event?

    Hi,
i'm swith definitly to iPhoto to organize all my image images shot in this last 5 yeasr....
now i have about 10k photos...
    Now a very easy question:
Events is a very good feature and now i can organize my photo exactly how i want...by event/day !!!
But i don't know how to organize event split on more days.....
My last vacation in Palma di Majorca give me about 450photos split on 10days....
with a digital camera is very easy shot much...
    How organize this evenbts?
More events or a single big events?
Is there a way to create events inside an events?
    Thanks
    Marco

    Marco
Events are very limited. The are based only on time and date. You cannot have sub-events.
For that use Folders and Albums.
File -> New Folder Call it Palma
New Album: Day one. Put the pics from Day one into the Album, then put that Album into the Folder.
You can also make Smart Albums based on date.
Also, click on the Magnifying Glass icon in the Search Window. Select Date: this way you can find any pic taken on a specific day, month or year.

  • Is it possible to have sub-folder events inside an event on iPhoto?

Is it at all possible to have an Event (eg. Pets) then have sub-events inside that event (eg. Dog, Cat etc.) in iPhoto?
I can't seem to find anything...
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    No it's not.
Basically, Events are organisation for those who can't be bothered. SImple date and time grouping of photos.
If you want more, now it's time to explore Albums and Folders.
So, a Folder called 'Animals' and within it, two Albums, one for 'Dog' and one for 'Cat'
Albums are much more flexible than events, you can arrange the photos within albums with much more flexibility. A photo can be in multiple albums using no extra disk space, whereas to have a photo in multiple Events requires a duplicate file and so on.
FWIW here's a canned answer I use to illustrate some of the organisation possibilities of iPhoto...
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Annoyed by iPhoto's lack of event folders

    Hey Everyone,
Typical Apple......some things are absolutely amazing, some things are absolutely stupid.
    Love iPhoto. Hate iPhoto.
I love the concept of Events, I hate how rigid they are.
I want to make ONE event entitled "Summer Vacation" that encompasses several days, locations, and activities. When I click that event, I want several "sub" events that appear that separate my photo collections logically under the hood of one experience.
Is it a practical method of organization? Absolutely. Is it possible in iPhoto? From what I have attempted and researched, NO!
I can sub-categorize my music collection beautifully in iTunes and access it in any capacity using the browser view. Why can't iPhoto be built the same consistent way?
How hard is it to offer 3 methods of view: 1. All Events 2. All Photos 3. Event Folders (aka Smart Events, Event Playlists, Whatever)
I don't want workarounds, title tricks, album massage, etc. I want simple old fashioned quick and easy drag and drop. X number of related Events into one with the entities sub categorized and preserved.
So simple. Somebody PLEASE tell me this is possible and make me an idiot, I will wear the title with pride.

You can do what you want with the virtual folders that can be created in the left hand pane. Virtual folders can contain albums, smart albums, books, slideshows and other virtual folders like this. The smart albums can be configured to span a specific time line or any other criteria of the photos. You can also use keywords or multiple keywords assigned to a photos to help with your organization.
That's what you'll have to use if you're going to use iPhoto. It's the nature of the beast. if you want to maintain your own, hierarchical folder structure and have that represented in the image management tool you're using you'll need to use something link iView MediaPro which is now Expression Media.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can I merge events under a main title, but still keep subevents titled?

I have a ton of pictures to organize and would love to know if I can sort events by making a "main" event like "Family pictures" and put all sub-events having to do with family in it.... but I would love to keep the photos I put in it somewhat seperate. Example:
If i open an event tilted "Family" I would like to see other events like "reunion 05'", "thanksgiving 06', "bithday 09'" in it. Then I could click those individual events to see the photos.
    Is this possible?

    Yes, but not with Events.
Events are a very basic form of organisation, firmly built around the date and time the photos were taken.
Now you want to build an organisation around the contents of the photos.
Make Albums of the photos for Reunion 05, thanksgiving 06 etc and then create a new Folder (File -> New Folder) Name it Family Photos and then drag the albums to the folder.
Albums are much more flexible than Events, and used with Keywords and Ratings there is no limit how you organise your pics. And because Albums simply reference pics in your Library they take up no disk space. A single photo can be in 100 albums if you wish, with no duplication.

  • On iPhoto 08 - File Directories, Events and Gallery Support

For sometime now, I have been meaning to better organize my digital photos and share them with my friends and family on the web. I have finally done so, and now I am having a bit of a problem implementing my organization into the new iPhoto, but I am willing to learn about the newest version of iPhoto and figure out ways to make things work. So I have a couple of questions.
One problem I have always had with digital photos is that it is not easy to see when the photo was taken when you are just looking at the photo as a file. I guess my major concern is that the "Date Modified" in the Finder is a little bit misleading on first glance. I want to be able to look at a file and tell when the photo was taken and not when it was uploaded to my computer. So I found an Automator Action that will allow to go back and rename your photos according to the date they were taken. I used the %Y%m%d_%H%M%S date syntax to rename all of my pictures. My thinking was that I would be able to quickly know the date/time the picture was taken in Finder or iPhoto. Someone in the Applescript Discussion gave me a simple script that would further organize the directories my pictures lived in. So now, a photo I have taken today would look something like this on my computer /2008/200809/20080909/20080909_083029.jpg. Now that I have imported my photos in the newest version of iPhoto, I see that Apple has changed the iPhoto directory so that it is not easily viewable.
My first question is what does this mean for me going forward. It looks like my file/directory syntax remained intact inside the iPhoto directory, but how will I continue to add pictures using my current syntax in the future? There are programs/scripts to download pictures from your camera using the same naming conventions I already used for folders and files. Will iPhoto allow me to directly create directories in subdirectories in the iPhoto directory without using iPhoto to download the photos from my computer?
Also, I started using the .Mac galleries right before I started in on my photo reorganizing adventure. Initially I thought it might be a neat idea to have the Albums in the Gallery tied to the syntax of the directories syntax so that my friends and family would have a visual timeline of my kid's growing up. So maybe there would be an album called 200908 where friends and families could see last months pictures, and also see albums of previous months. And when I started using the newest version of iPhoto I realized there is a new element I needed to learn about called "events". I guess because of the syntax of my directories, it has created a new event for every day I have pictures. Is this how iPhoto determines events? I really cannot find much information on this. This is pretty neat, but it does not really follow the exact syntax of my directory system. In other words, there is no way to have events (months) and sub-events (days). Furthermore, I believe there is a limit on the number of Albums you can have in your .Mac gallery, and I am assuming that I would go over this if I created an Album for everyday that I had pictures. I realize that I could probably create Smart Albums in my iPhoto so that I had pictures from a YYYYMM folder, but it seems like a lot of extra work. Should I change my directory syntax to %Y/%Y%m/%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.jpg (i.e. 2008/200809/20080909_083029.jpg) so that events are represented as months and not days? Or is there another way to achieve limiting the number of events and still keep the same organization?
Sorry for the long-winded question, hopefully someone can get me started. Thank you in advance.

Do you want to organise your Photos?
    Or your Files?
If you want to organise your files, use the Finder - it's exactly what it's for. And all your questions relate to organising Files.
If you want to organise your Photos use iPhoto.
The point of iPhoto is that you organise the pics and let iPhoto look after the files. After you import them to iPhoto, forget about them.
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. These changes include renaming files.
Will iPhoto allow me to directly create directories in subdirectories in the iPhoto directory without using iPhoto to download the photos from my computer?
No. Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
The only way to bring photos into the iPhoto Library Folder is via importing them through iPhoto.
Here's the thing: Want to find the photos from a specific date? Use the calendar tool. (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the search window. You can find the pics from a specific day, month, year effortlessly. With Date base Smart Albums you can find all the pics from just about any combination of dates that you might want.
Want to then get to +that pic from 6/5/2003+ Need to email that file? Or want to open it in Photoshop to edit? Or want to upload it to a website?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
So, in a nutshell, you need to decide which your are organising... files or photos.
Events are a Download filtered by date. You can set the paramaters in the iPhoto Preferences -> Events.
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.

  • Organising large numbers of events

    Organising Events....
Like a lot of things when it comes to Apple things are easy when they're easy but become a nightmare when there not.
One example a friend uses I photo which was fine when she had 10/15 'events' but things quickly became unmanageable when she had 50+ 'Events'
Is it possible to have 'SUB-events' i.e. An event entitled Christmas which when you went into it it was sub divided into each years Christmas i.e. '09, '08, '07 etc?
    Cheers
    HVXuser.....

Is it possible to have 'SUB-events'
    No.
Once you want this sort of thing you've outgrown Events as an organising tool.
Events are a very basic tool: based entirely on date and time they really are organising for those who can't be bothered.
Albums are much, much more flexible. You can put Albums into Folders, (you can also nest other folders inside folders) so a Folder called Xmas containing albums called Xmas 06, Xmas 07 etc is very possible and easy.
As albums simply reference pics in the Library, Albums take up no extra disk space. A pic can be in 50 albums and involve no duplication whatever.
FWIW here's an answer I've posted before on some of the possibilities of organising in iPhoto:
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
