Sub-playlists?

In Itunes, is there a way to make a sub category for a playlist. For example:
Have the main playlist called "ROCK". And than have sublists from that like Light rock, Metal, Alternative, and etc.
I just have to many playlist and want to cut down.

You can make use of Folders to organize your playlists. Note that this feature works for iTunes but will not carry over to your iPod.

  • Is it possible to create a "sub" playlist within another?

    Hello,
    For example, can you create a U2 playlist?...and then within that, create playlists for their albums?
    Thanks,
    Steve

    I don't think you can do a "sub" playlist. But you can do some pretty tricky things with smart playlists. You can create a non-smart U2 playlist, and then do smart playlists based on your original U2 playlist.
    Do this: make a non-smart playlist called "allU2".
    Browse (click on the eyeball in the upper right) your way to U2, then select all those songs, drag 'em to your "allU2" playlist. You now have a regular playlist with all of your U2 in it.
    Now make a smart playlist called "Achtung Baby" or whatever album you want.
    When you're creating your smart playlist you wanna do this:
    checkmark "match all of the following"
    ->Playlist ->Contains ->allU2 (then click the "+" sign to add another rule)
    ->Album ->Contains ->Achtung Baby
    That's how you would make a "sub" playlist based on a playlist, but really that was just an exercise in making playlists. In order to create a playlist to listen to specific albums, you don't even need to mess with multiple playlists. Just do this: create a smart playlist title "achtung baby":
    "match all of the following"
    ->artist ->contains ->U2
    ->album ->contains ->achtung baby
    Or forget the "artist" line and have just this in your smart playlist:
    ->album ->contains ->achtung baby
    OR, (lemmee see how long I can ramble on here), you could forgo the entire playlist trip and listen to albums through "Browse". Click Browse. In the Artists column scroll down to U2. You'll get a list of all your U2 albums in the righthand column and a list of all your U2 songs below. In albums click on whatever album you want. The songs list will only show songs from whatever album you clicked. You can play just those songs.
    Or open-apple click on multiple albums to highlight multiple albums. You can then listen to U2 songs from multiple albums.
    I love fiddling around with playlists.
    One of my favorite smart playlists (I'm listening to it right now):
    smart playlist titled "5* not played 1 week":
    Match ->all of the following:
    ->Last played ->is not in the last ->1 ->weeks
    ->My rating ->is ->***
    down below click a checkmark next to: Live Updating
    That playlist only plays songs that are 5 stars that I haven't listened to in the last week.
    Good luck and have fun! If you have any questions about playlists, post 'em here and I'll be more than happy to help you out.

  • 2 ipods , 1 itunes, "sub" playlists

    Hi All,
    I have been reading through the discussions and I have figured out that if I want 2 ipods off one Itunes I just creat 2 playlists for each person. However can I then create "sub" playlists within these folders? Or do I have to just choose by album, genre etc??
    Thanks

    Hi Charlotte,
    No, iTunes does not allow you to create "sub" playlists. What you can do (with iTunes 5), is create folders to group several lists, but they will not appear on your iPod.
    The other thing you can do is select more than one playlist for each iPod. Go to: Edit->Preferences->iPod and choose "sync checked playlists only" instead of "sync all". Then check all those lists you want on that iPod.

  • Creating SUB-PLAYLIST

    I've asked this b4, but no one responded...so I'll try to ask this again:
    Is there any programs available, that will enable my ipod to create "sub-playlist"?
    instead of this:
    LOVE SONGS (MALE)
    LOVE SONGS (FEMALE)
    LOVE SONGS (BAND)
    ALTERNATIVE (GROUP)
    ALTERNATIVE (MALE)
    ALTERNATIVE (FEMALE)
    it will be MORE pleasant to see this:
    LOVE SONGS > MALE
    FEMALE
    GROUP
    ALTERNATIVE > GROUP
    MALE
    FEMALE
    I don't know if its just me being "demanding"...But I think it'll just be a SIMPLE program update to enable this....I wonder why Apple didn't thought about this...or maybe they did...they just want to include features "one by one" for each NEW IPOD.....

    I suppose you, but the way that I am thinking of doing this would require something radical... you could rename your songs, artists, and album in such a way that you could go this way. Perhaps, keep the names of the songs, but you would give up the artist and album to do so. Of course, to retain the artist and album, you could embed this in the title of the song. This is a lot of work and I am not sure if you want to go through all of that, but it would let you do what you are asking. If there is a better, then I hope someone more intelligent than will post. Best of luck to you!

  • Creating "Sub-Playlists"

    Does anyone know if it is possible to create a playlist that when selected, opens a list of other playlists, similar to how you can have folders and sub-folders in Windows? A few months ago I downloaded a Spanish translator from CoolGorilla.com, and they managed to do something similar. You would go into the "Notes" section, select a subject, then a more refined subject, and then finally a phrase, which would then open an audio file of a spanish-speaking lady repeating the phrase over and over. Please respond. Thanks.

    I'll be honest, you lost me with the Spanish translator from CoolGorilla.com, Ryno JvR, but, for what it's worth, you can put your playlists into folders in iTunes and put folders into other folders.
    Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base and let us know if it solves your problem.

  • Can I create Composer sub-playlists in Classical Music?

    I made the terrible mistake of upgrading to itunes 11. I've managed to mostly get it the way I want it with the exception of my Classical Music. In itunes 10 I had playlists for each composer under the Classical Music heading, which was the easiest way to sort things. Now I just have a list of tracks by composer, and it's impossible to navigate. I can't figure out a way to change this, and am thinking about reinstalling 10.7, but that looks painfully difficult - does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

    Use MetaZ to tag the files as TV Shows and the correct series and all other info.

  • How to make sub-categories in iTunes playlists

    I have many playlists for separating certain types of music, like most people do.  I was wondering if there is a way to place sub-categories in playlists already made.  For example:
         iTunes>Playlists>Recently Added>10 Most Recently Added>5 Most Recently Added.
    I would like to be able to view/listen to the originated playlist; i.e. "Recently Added" which contains all the sub-playlists; i.e. "10 Most Recently Added" and "5 Most Recently Added" but also be able to access the sub-playlists within the original playlist and listen to solely the songs within the sub-category.
    Basically, is there a way to put a playlist within a playlist without having to use and edit auto-updating smart playlists manually?

    You can't make a playlist inside a playlist. You can nest playlists inside of folders and if you click on the folder it will show a summation of all the playlists contained in it.

  • Burning Playlists with Sub-Folders

    I have a playlist and then about 16 sub-playlists under it. I wanted to burn the whole playlist to a DVD disk as a data CD. This is primarily for my car. For example, the USB feature allows me to put music in folders and I can navigate through the artists with one button instead of pressing the button ten times to get to the next artist(s). It lets me burn the individual sub-playlists, but when I try to burn the entire playlist, the "burn playlist to disc" button disappears entirely. I was wondering if there was a way to burn the WHOLE playlist with the subfolders on iTunes, or if I have to stick with just burning the individual sub-playlists.

    Sort the playlist by Album or Artist then burn it.

  • New iPod, Created Playlist on iPod, Now Can't Delete???

    When i dock my ipod in itunes and i click the triangle to reveal the sub playlists i can see one i created earlier but i want to delete it but can't.
    i created a playlist called "Purchased" because i wanted an easy way of playing just the songs i purchased from itunes. However, once created i see no way of deleting it as all the songs in the playlist is grayed out. In fact all the songs in all the iPod playlists are greayed out. My "Purchased" playlist is full of songs and i don't want to lose any. I created an iTunes playlist and successfully deleted that but therefter i was unable to sync as itunes told me it could not sync because not all the playlists could be found and i also lost all my songs on ipod at the same time? So i formated my ipod and started again but the old "Purchase" playlist is still there on my ipod???
    Please help
    Paul.
    AMD 4000+   Windows XP

    I thought I got this sorted but I havn't and need help.
    For the second time tonight and much to my annoyance I have lost all my songs in my ipod. Let me tell you how this is happening.
    From iTunes I selected the option to "Manually Manage Music and Videos" in order to delete a playlist i no longer want. I then deleted the playlist "Purchased" from the left hand side under DEVICES. All is fine until I uncheck "Manualy Manage Music & Videos" again in order to re-sync automatically. It's at this point the "Purchased" reappears it's ugly head and I then lose all my files from my ipod.
    Under the music tab in iTunes the pre defined playlists plus the one i created "purchased" always remained their and I have no way of deleting them even if i delete them from the DEVICES column on the left hand side once i select Manually Manage Music etc.
    Can anyone help please??
    Paul.

  • Playlist folders do not contain the correct number of songs

    I have many manually generated playlists and I categorize them in a hierarchal manner using folders so that I can click on the folder and see all the songs contained in each of the sub-playlists.
    What I've realized recently (although I suspect it's been going on the entire time) is that when I click on the folder it does not contain nearly enough songs. In other words, there are many songs in the contained playlists that do not appear when I click on the containing folder.
    I first noticed in iTunes 9, but the problem persists into the newest version of iTunes.

    X3, have the same problem. I look in iTunes and the number of songs in 80's espanol is 27. I look in my iPod and it only shows 22, none of them are duplicates. After a random look in various playlists I am missing over 174 so far, and I am not half way through it. I would like to see how to fix this. So far I have reset my iPod, have over 130 GB of free space on it, so I have a feeling it is a bug. The other thing I found is if you find a song that is not in your iPod's playlist, and move it into another playlist it disappears. I am not sure how long it has been this way, one of my playlists I haven't added or deleted and songs from it in over a year, and it there is a difference of 3 songs between what iTunes has and what my iPod has.

  • Is it possible to play the whole playlist-folder?

    In iTunes I subdivide larger playlists in multiple smaller ones, by putting them in one folder. I can then play either only the single sub-playlist or the whole folder with every playlist included.
    The same worked wonderfully with my iPod Classic.
    But on the iPhone, I've got the same folder structure, but as it seems, i can play only single playlists. Which makes the whole tree-meta-structure kind of obsolete... Is it just me, being to stupid to find the right button? Or to want this feature at all?
    I don't see why it works in iTunes AND on the iPod Classic, but not on iOS5. Couldn't there be the same "Shuffle"-entry above all playlists in a folder as there is above all entries in a playlist??

    Yes, I do this all the time.
    You need a USB power adapter that connects an AC outlet to your USB cable and then to your iPod.
    You can get one from Apple here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB352LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA4NA&mco=MTY1OTg1Nw
    Or get one from other manufacturers (I have one from Griffin, my wife has one from DLO). Check the prices.

  • Editing playlists in iTunes

    My music folder from PC has many folders within folders. I want to copy these into iTunes in a similar way, but it would cause toooo many playlists. Is there a way to do sub playlists within playlists.
    Also, how can I remove the default checkmarks on every new file added to a playlist? It seems that every time I play something, if there are checkmarks, iTunes goes to a random one and plays. I want iTunes to stop and shut up when a song is finished. Is that too much to ask?
    Thanks. Bill :-)

    Bill,
    If no one here is able to step and help I'd recommend reposting in the iTunes forum. It's located at:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes/itunes_for_mac
    This is for OS X, there is a similar forum for iTunes for Windows.

  • Front Row not showing playlists

    On my MacBook I have my playlists in iTunes in folders. In Front Row all the folders show up under playlists, and when selected they show the playlists in them, EXCEPT for the first folder of playlists - it lists all the songs in all the playlists within that folder instead.
    Anyone else had this problem? Any solution?

    I have this same problem. My guess is that everyone does, whether they know it or not.
    My 'workaround' is to create a folder with a name that will make it always first, and put in some playlists that you don't care are not displayed in sub-playlists in Front Row.
    I know, weak workaround, but at least the folders that do matter will show up properly.
    Was hoping latest Front Row update (1.3) would fix this, but problem still there.

  • Can playlists be organized into some kind of hierarchy?

    I sync three ipods to one PC/iTunes installation and make heavy use of playlists geared towards each person. To distiguish them, I prefix each playlist name with the initials of the person whose iPod syncs to it. This technique, while well organized, leaves me with a LOT of playlists to scroll through.
    In iTunes, is there a way to group playlists into some kind of hierarchy...like a folder analogy so I don't have to see and scroll through so many?
    Is it possible to create sub-playlists?

    Simply create a folder for each persons playlists.
    File -> New folder.
    Name it something useful (Fronzman's playlists) then drag the relevant playlists into the folder.
