Subcategory prob in PSE8 organizer

I was trying to create tags in my organizer. I'm using it for my digi scrapbook supplies. I created a Scrapbook tag and then under it I have several sub tags like color, paper, etc.  It will not let me create any subcatagory tags under those however. I would of course like to actually list different colors under the color tag but when I right click on it (or any of the other ones) the box comes up but the "create sub category tag" option isnt highlighted so I can choose it. How do I fix this? I know its possible because I've done it on a different computer but nothing I do is allowing me to do it now?? Help!

You need to right click on Color and select make keyword a sub-category.
Then click on the Keyword Tag plus sign to create individual colors.

  • PSE8 Organizer - Odd Key Word tag search result

Question by tagging example in Elements 8 Organizer.
I have 2 friends Bill and Sandra (key word tags) they belong to same subgroup "Friends".
Now, when I in PSE8 Organizer seach for Sandra e.g. by check the "Sandra" check box. Then a lot more pictures than only Sandra appear the results set. For me this make no sense at all.  BUT on the other hand, if I create a subcategory "Sandra" and tag the same pictuters with that, then I have no problem. Only Sandra  (as subcategory) tagged pictures will shows in the results set.
Many thanks for any clue or help.

    Hi,
Here are 2 screenshots showing the 2 scanarioos. Note. when Reacreated the issue made me understand the PSE query little better. But it still make no sense for me. Because I have never seen or heard of any query tool where clause inheríts upwards in a hirarchy.
In other words. A query maikng sence for me look somethin like this:
    - » SELECT all pictitures in 'abc'  WHERE tag = "X"   (with or without hirarchy daughter tags to "X")
As I interpret the PSE8 query result. The PSE8 query look something like this
    - » SELECT all pictitures in 'abc'  WHERE tag = "X"  AND include also all tag "X" sister tags AND also include an unpredictable set of tag "X" mother tags Her doughter tags.
For me this is a very strange logic of behavoir for an application and/or query tool.

  • How to refresh tags in PSE8 Organizer

If I update a tag or change a rating, outside of the Elements Organizer, for example in CS4 Bridge, Windows Explorer or a photo editor, how can I get the PSE8 Organizer to recognise the updated IPTC information? Can I get it to re read the file information without re-importing it?
    Peter

    Thanks for this.
I've just done a few tests and I see that, when I update the thumbnail, the caption is updated but the star rating is not updated.
I find the whole system of not writing out the metadata to the image, unless requested, and there being no way to update certein metadata, other than re-import somewhat unsatisfactory. I suppose that this is the downside of using a database to hold the information.

  • PSE8 Organizer does not display the miniatures (less than 1%)

    Hello,
As indicated above, when I launches PSE8 Organizer the photos of the collection are not displayed as miniatures. Instead I get waiting hourglasses. Activating the menu 'Update the miniatures' doesnot change anything.
    Can somebody haelp me?
Thanks, I apologize for my english
    Lamarckjohn

Does this mean the problem has returned like mine did Lamarckjohn?
As I haven't got to the bottom of the problem yet and my pc is mid-rebuild for the 2nd time I HOPE you are OK...
We must keep in touch as we seem to have the same issue, (though mine did seem to spread and give other registry issues the more I tried to fix it).  Dell have asked me to run the pc without Adobe for a month to see if that isolates the issue....
I think this must be raised with Adobe....I'll give them the link to your threads too, to show I am not alone.
Good luck and please update us on your progress.

  • Editing with Photoshop CS4 from PSE8 Organizer

I have made numerious attempts to use Photoshop CS4 to edit an image in the PSE8 organizer rather than Photoshop Elements. There is a shortcut to launch CS4 which is Ctrl-H rather than the usual Ctrl-I. CS4 launched and I complete the edit. I do a save as but Organizer retains the Edit in Progress red bar across the image (edited version) and this does not go away even when CS4 is closed.
If I close PSE8 Organizer the Edited file is no longer there, in Elements or indeed in the folder. The same happens whether I save as a jpg or psd file.
Can anyone point out what is going wrong or give me the correct procedure for making this work.
    Peter

Peter I would love to find a solution for you.
There has always been a bug with PSE7 requiring edited RAW images from ACR to be manually imported back into PSE Organizer. This may apply to Jpegs and could have rolled-over into PSE8.
As PSE8 is fully supported I suggest you raise a ticket with Adobe Support through the contact link but it does not guarantee a solution to your problem.
This Adobe tech Note gives further details.

  • PSE8 Organizer with PSE9 Editor

I'm trying to use the PSE8 Organizer with the  PSE9 Editor (don't like what they did to folder view in PSE9 Organizer).   I've tried to do it two ways: by setting the PSE9 Editor as a  supplemental editor and by replacing all the files in the Photoshop  Elements 8.0 directory with the files from the Photoshop Elements 9  directory.
The supplemental editor method results in:
a new  version of the file being opened is created in      the organizer each  time and that file is what is pulled into the editor (it's named  _edited_# and added to a version set of the original each time)
can only get into edit from the edit menu  (ie,      supplemental editor doesn't appear in right click drop down) -  can learn      to live with this if item 1 can be corrected.
Files don't get locked in the Organizer when they get      opened - can learn to live with this, too
Replacing the files in the directory results in
The  PSE9 editor opens when selecting "Edit with      Photoshop Elements"  from right click drop down (or from Edit menu) but it doesn't bring a       file into the editor.
If I use the open command from the editor, it brings      the file in but doesn't lock it
Same problem with not recognizing the Organizer as      above.
    Anyone have any ideas?
Note: I poked around in the registry a little but nothing jumped out at  me immediately (adding the key for "CurrentCatalogPath" in the 9.0  section of Elements Organizer under the CURRENT_USER software key  stopped the message that the organizer wasn't being used but still did  not allow me the options to save changes in the Elements Organizer or  add to version set)

I agree with your view point about PSE 8 Organizer. I also like it better for the same reason.. My work around is having 2 monitors. I keep PSE8 organizer on the left and PSE9 Editor on the right. Then I drag across. My catalog paths and settings in Both organizers is the same. Edited items from PSE9 will show up in 8....make sure your "watched folders" settings are set and the same in both organizers. Its a bit clunky...but it works for me...but I'm just a new guy to PSE.

  • PSE8 Organizer won't display on monitor

I have a really strange problem.  I have a new laptop running Windows 7.  I have a mouse, keyboard and monitor (among other things) attached to it via a port replicator so I can use the laptop as a desktop (whatever happened to good old docking stations?!?).  I have had all kinds of problems since installing PSE8, but this one baffels me.
When I start up the Organizer, either from a direct shortcut to PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe OR through the Welcome screen, Organizer starts (and appears in the task bar) but only displays on the laptop screen.  It won't display on my monitor.  Now it worked a couple of times but then stopped working.
I'm hoping there is a very simple solution!

Edit > Visibility was set to Show All Files.  In Preferences, I unchecked all filter selections for Auto Analyze.  No effect.
I have one folder with 3 .tiff files that PSE8 Organizer won't display.  Trying to import the files and PSE8 says they are there but PSE8 cannot display them.  No explanation.  Windows Photo Viewer and Picasa have no problem displaying them.
I have deleted and made new catalogs with the same results for that folder.  I cannot figure out what is wrong with these files.  All other applications have no problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • PSE8 Organizer won't display new files

After copying photo files into a folder, I opened PSE8 Organizer and imported the files.  PSE8 reported importing 578 photos.  I clicked to Show ALL.  Only the original 24 photos in the folder are displayed.
I have tried rebuilding the catalog, and deleting and creating a new catalog.  Nothing seems to work.  The rebuilding of the catalog reported the files are there and do not need to be imported.  But PSE8 still won't display any but the original 24 files.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • PSE8 Organizer not automatically reading media card

    Hi,
I have a client that is using PSE8 Organizer and all of a sudden it has stopped reading the media card automatically. My client believes this happened after an update by Adobe Updater.
They say that it used to be a simple process of placing the card in the card reader and then a window would pop up where they would select the icon / program for PSE8, however the icon was missing and when clicking this link, my client was presented with a message saying that the link was broken. I advised my client to uninstall the program and then to reinstall, which has fixed this issue i.e. the icon and back and when clicking the link there is no message.
However that is as far as it goes, the link doesn't produce any results and the media card is not read.
If my client accesses the card as a folder through PSE8 Organizer then the images are shown, but again are not automatically loaded into the application.
My client really would like the automatic function restored.
Has anyone else had this problem and knows how to resolve it please?
The machine is running Windows XP 32-bit SP3.
The only oddity I can see is that the application is installed to the external hard drive as opposed to the normal internal hard drive. Would this cause problems with the application?
    Thanks,
    CliveSRT

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have checked the setting that you mentioned and it is set to automatic. When inserting the card into the card reader we are again prompted to open the files with an application, which my client selects PSE8. However this is as far as we get as nothing else appears to happen.
    Thanks,
    Clive.

  • PSE8 Organizer and PSE9 Editor?

I've given up on PSE9 Organizer but I would like to use PSE9 Editor.
Is is possible, without having to manually load each edited file into the PSE8 Organizer?
So far as I can see it just isn't possible to get PSE8 Organizer to acknowledge the PSE9 Editor as an alternative editor, either in its own right or by changing .exe file names to try and fool it.
I can disable PSE8 Editor, get the file from PSE8 Organizer into PSE9 Editor, edit it, save it, (or Save As), but it won't appear into the PSE8 oganizer unless I manually import it.

Yes it can be done. This is how I did it.
Copy the PSE Editor application to another folder such as My Documents.
Rename the file - I called mine PhotoEditing
Then move the renamed file back into the Photoshop Elements 9 folder
It will be an exact duplicate of the original installation (shown with the red arrow)
Open the PSE8 Organizer and click:
    Edit >>Preferences >> Editing>
Check the box - Use A Supplementary Editing Application
Then click browse and navigate to your renamed file.
Next time you right click on a thumbnail in organizer your new editor will show up in the dropdown list.

  • PSE8 Organizer Window

PSE8 Organizer window won't resize in windows xp, sp2 or windows 7, any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, but this doesn't work.  The editor page is can be resized  but for some reason the organizer page will NOT resize.

  • Updating metadata in PSE8 Organizer

How do I update the metadata in PSE8 Organizer. I want to update author, City, Country.
Looking at properties, metadata it only lets me "Look" at the information.
also can the metadata be changes on several pictures at one time.(Selecting several Pictures)
    Thanks

The Organizer only lets you update the date/time, caption, notes, star rating, GPS location, and keyword tags.  You can't change any other metadata fields.   You can change more fields using File > File Info in the Editor, but that's tedious, and forces you to recompress JPEGs.
You'll need to get a third-party tool such as Microsoft's Pro Photo Tools (there are many others).

  • How can I make the thumbnail cursor in PSE8 organizer stay at the current position?

Whenever I am browsing through the thumbnail view in PSE8 organizer and I delete, edit, or sometimes when I apply a tag or a filter, the cursor automatically repositions to the first thumbnail in the catalog or the folder after the operation is complete, resulting in me losing my place, having to find it again, etc. -- which is a huge incovenience considering I have over 16,000 images in my catalog. Is there some way to force organizer to keep its place in the catalog?

I believe you're using Display > Folder Location view, in which this behavior is most pronounced.  In Display > Thumbnail View (which sorts photos by date rather than folder), the problem generally doesn't occur.   Folder Location view is the PSE stepchild: slow, buggy, and poorly designed:

  • PSE8 Organizer does not display added .jpg's

I cannot find a way to get PSE8 Orgamizer to display newly added files.  I have clicked on every "Show All" I can find.  The only way I can see the new files is to build a new catalog.
This is on a new PC with Win7.
    Please help!

    Hi GaryKuep,
What you have written here sounds like what I do in PSE9 and it worked fine...until today. The catalog I've been working with had a mere 5,000 files in it. I was adding files and moving things around between drives and suddenly the catalog had about 65,000 files in it- 60,000 of which were hidden. I could not find the hidden files anywhere and I certainly did not add 60,000. Then I noticed some of my other, smaller catalogs were acting strange. I would be working with the 5,000 file catalog and the program would suddenly switch over to one of the smaller catalogs. I ended up purging the PSE Organizer preference folder, deleting ALL the catalogs, restarting my computer, and making all new catalogs. The problem seems to have cleared up once I was able to finally delete the 5,000 file catalog...I think. Deleting the 5,000 file catalog was not easy. The programwould not let me just delete it in the normal way through the catalog manager, until I restarted my computer. I'm not sure just what cleaned things up but everything seems to be working ok now.
I suspect something I'm doing confuses the program. When I moved folders between drives I think the program got lost, (I was moving PSE things to larger drives when I realized just how big these PSE catalogs and related file folders, etc were becoming.)
If this all sounds confused, well, that's were I am with it as well...confused.

  • PSE8 Organizer takes 2 trys to launch in Win7

    I'm running PSE8 in Windows 7 Ultimate.
When I launch PSE8, get the Welcome screen, and click on Organize, I get a 'beep' and the Organizer icon appears on the task bar, but no window comes up. If I choose 'close window' from the task bar icon, and launch Organizer a 2nd time, everything starts up OK. Same thing happens if I launch Organizer directly without going through the Welcome screen, or if I launch Organizer from within Editor.
Launching PSE8 Editor from Welcome screen works every time.
    Any ideas?

Can you share the log file contents located at  <currentuser>\Application Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\8.0\Organizer
Looking at this might give some clue about what is happening on launch which is taking too long.
