Subclip numbering

Friends,
I have FCE 3.5 and have what should be a simple problem. After importing a project I run DV stop/start detect to break up the imported file into segments. I then make subclips out of the segments. The segments are created in numerical order (1-40). The subclips are created in a different pattern (1, 10-19, 2, 20-29, 3, 30-39, etc.) This is annoying and moderately inconvenient. Is there anything I can do to change this preference of FCE?
Thanks!
Steve

That's a great suggestion, with one problem: it requires me to rename each segment before making subclips. If I have to do that, I can just as easily rename the subclips. It seems an odd quirk that the program would create well-ordered segments, then screw things up when making subclips.
It's not the end of the world, but it is annoying.

  • Numbering of subclips

After I capture my video from the camera, I use Mark>>>DV Start/Stop Detect to break the large master clip into segments. Final Cut numbers these sequentially, from 1 to whatever. I select all of these segments and use Modify>>>Make Subclip to turn the segments into subclips. Now, however, Final Cut numbers the subclips as follows: 1, 10, 11, 12....19, 2, 20, 21, etc.
Nasty trick! I've looked in Preferences to see if there was something about numbering but can't find. I'm on Final Cut 7, but the earlier versions did the same thing.
Anyone have any ideas how to get the subclips to be numbered sequentially? Thanks!

You could sort by media start and all the clips will be in order.

  • Is there a way to disable project window scrolling after creating a new subclip?

I am often editing short aftermovies from parties and my workflow is as follows:
    1) Capture and stash movies in a single folder (there's very little possibility for planning particular shots or tagging videos on the fly)
    2) Ingest media into Prelude and go through the clips identifying useful footage, subclipping and tagging
    3) Rough cut (optionally) and fine cut to music in Premiere
Now step 2 is where I'm being really slown down. I would ideally like to go through all the media as quickly as possible. Usually there's just one subclip per a clip.
However every time I add a subclip the whole project window just scrolls down and focuses on the new subclip and to continue to the next clip I have to scroll up, tediously look for it or search for it by numbers.
I thought that ordering the clips by date would solve this problem as I was expecting the focus to go to the subclip which should appear right next to the current clip. However there's an obvious bug in Prelude there. When you add a subclip while having Date created ordering on this happens: Subclip is first created at the bottom as with User ordering and the window focuses on that, then the subclip instantly moves after the current clip but the view doesn't refocus, leaving me in a possibly even worse situation.
It would be awesome to either (or all):
Remove the focus bug and refocus on the reordered subclip instantly
Add an option to disable the automatic scrolling of the Project window
Add keyboard shortcuts to go to next/previous clip
Add more filtering options to the current Subclip only such as Clip only, Non-tagged clip only, Tagged clip only (ideally through some custom filter option with checkboxes so you could tailor them to your needs)
Still it's a huge step up from the Premiere's multi window media organization nightmare but certain (possibly quite common) use cases are still very unrefined.
If any of the above mentioned options are in there already, please let me know, thanks
By the way when talking about Ordering related bugs, try creating a new Bin when having Date created sorting on. The Bin appears with its rename on, then it jumps to the top and voila you're renaming the last clip in the list. Like what the hell guys, do you even test the UI or is the CC turnaround too quick for that?

Hi, not sure if you'll see this post but the option has been moved to the 'Universal Access' Preference pane in settings.
This drove me utterly mad until I realized that.
    Hope this helps!

  • Subclips inconsistent behavior; not always working correctly in Premiere Pro CC

I load a clip into the Source panel.  I set in and out points and then CTRL + U to create a subclip.  I have "Restrict Trim to subclip boundaries" turned off.  (Thank you Adobe, I've been waiting for "soft" subclips forEVER!)  The new subclip appears in my Project panel with the correct name and duration (as well as a white audio icon to indicate that it has not yet been used in my project).  Now, I drag that subclip into my sequence.  But the entire clip (a 5 minute interview), from which the subclip was derived, is loaded onto the timeline.
This has been working correctly for the last hour, and now it has stopped working.  It appears that for the moment, subclipping is dead to me.
    Help?!

    Thanks for that, Mark.
I've done a little more testing, and the problem seems to be related to merged clips where (for me) the audio is longer than the video.
Here's a screenshot of some testing I did:
Let me talk you through the project browser:
    - At the top there are the source video and audio
    - I then made bins for a trimmed sequence version and an untrimmed sequence (what I mean by trimmed is that the audio was chopped down to the same duration as the video, after syncing)
    - I did the syncing on both manually. For the untrimmed clip, the audio leads the video by 1:29:04.
    - I then made merges of both
    - I then made subclips of both
    Remarks:
    1) The trimmed versions seem to work fine, though I haven't done serious testing. At least the media start and end make sense.
    2) The untrimmed merge "Merge (untrimmed)" is showing a Media Start of 23:57:04:10, which is just wrong. First of all this is a 'negative' time number (C++ signed/unsigned int math coding error?), secondly, it doesn't seem to match anything because it is an offset of -2:55:14, when the video offset is +1:29:04.
    3) When I open "Untrimmed.Subclip001" (as shown in the Source window) it shows a start time of "23:57:04:10" (the very beginning of the "Merge (untrimmed)" clip) instead of "23:58:33:14" which is where I'd set the in point for the subclip (and is shown in the Media Start column). What plays back is, indeed, the very beginning of the untrimmed clip. This is also the case with "Untrimmed.Subclip002" which had an In point set at 6:00:00.
    4) The Subclip Start times shown are totally broken. I really have no idea where it is getting those numbers from. On the other hand, the End times seem to be ok (if you again ignore the fact that I have an end time of "23+ hours" on a clip that is 1 hour long.
    5) The Audio In and Out Points shown don't make any sense to me. They're all just a little bit off the other numbers that are shown.
Lastly, the source video is AVCHD 1080p24 from a Panasonic GH2 and the audio is 48kHz 24-bit mono from a Zoom H4n
I hope this helps with your diagnosis.
    Looking forward to your feedback.

  • Segments Or Subclips ?

After I had replied to a question from Steve Kir I started to experiment with Segments and Subclips.
Until now I have usually split my clips into Subclips so that every scene is separated.
The only problem with Subclips is the dodgy numbering/ordering system.
However, I have just found that Segments can be used the same as Subclips and they are numbered consecutively from 1 to 100 or any amount.
Furthermore, just keeping them as Segments means one less process to go through.
Are there any disadvantages to using Segments in this way? There must be otherwise Subclips would be totally superfluous?
    Ian.

Could you explain exactly what you're doing Ian? Segments are just marker sections in a clip. They don't exist in any way outside of the clip. If you drag a segment, that is drag the marker out of the clip, the segment becomes a subclip. If you drag the segment onto the top level of the project or into a new bin it's named Segment 1 from 'ClipName' and is a subclip. It follows FCE's conventional alphanumeric ordering segment 1 followed by segment 10, 11, and so on.
If you drag the segment directly from the clip into a sequence, you're making a subclip. It will work fine, but it does have a couple of downsides. The subclip that's in the sequence is an independent subclip. It has no master clip in the browser. This can, on longer projects, slow down sequence load times. It also means you lose the reveal in browser functionality. If you have the playhead over a clip in the sequence and press Shift-F it will show you where the master clip is even if it's buried deep in bins. This won't work, because there is no master clip in the browser. The match frame (F) function will work however.

  • Subclips sorting/naming problem

when i split a long captured clip into subclips with the dv-start-stop thingie, i get a bunch of subclips that are named something like
    "subclip 1, subclip 2, subclip 3" etc.
problem is, when i open the browser, the sorting does something like
    subclip 1
    subclip 11
    subclip 12
    subclip 19
    subclip 2
    subclip 20
    subclip 21
    which is really quite confusing.
is there a way to fix this, or change it to include leading 0s when naming subclips?
    thanks

okay, thanks for the CatDV tip, i'll look into it later tonight. first glance looks promising, though.
second, i have 30 hours of tapes to capture, and the dvcam deck is a rental.
third, logging and THEN capturing from tape is tedious.
so, i got am extra hard drive (i'm almost at the terrabyte barrier , and load everything at once.
THEN i do scene detection, and end up with about 300 scenes per tape.
now to weed out the stuff i don't want, i'll go through the browser items one at a time. and it's here that this weird sorting gives me headaches, since i'm looking at the tape, i know the sequence of events as they took place, i klick around and then i jump ahead an hour, then back again.
if i can't add a 0, why can't i tell FCP to go by numbers and interpret numbers as such.
anyways ... i guess there's not really a solution except for third party software like CatDV.
    thanks for your replies, guys.

  • Should I Use Segments Or Subclips ?

How is this for showing my ignorance !
I don't usually use DV Start/Stop Detect but I have decided to on this project.
When it is used you get Segments which are correctly numbered from 1 upwards. You are then supposed to make subclips but this of course puts Segments 2 - 9 etc. in the wrong order and entails time-wasting re-numbering.
To save this happening could the original properly numbered Segments created from DV Start/Stop Detect be used?
Would there be any disadvantages to using them without bothering to change them into subclips?

    Hi Ian
When I use DV Start/Stop Detect, I usually do like this: first I move the segmented clip into a new bin, then I Make Subclips so that all subclips are gathered together (and do not mix with other items in the browser), then I change 1, 2, ...9 into 01, 02, ...09 since I usually have less then 100 subclips.
The disadvantages I know are the following.
First: a subclip is a "master" clip and is not affiliated with its original clip; if you reconnect the original clip ("Pendle Hill"), you have also to reconnect any subclip created from that (all "Segment xx from "Pendle Hill" Subclip").
Second: there was a bug in FCE 3.5 that makes the Make Freeze Frame command to always take a picture of the last frame of a subclip in the timeline, instead of the frame under the playhead. That bug seems to exist also in FCE4. - Workarounds: use a nested sequence, or change the subclip into a clip.
Third: it is not really a disadvantage, but, as you know, making subclips doesn't help in recovering disk space since the media files are left untouched.
Other than that, I find subclips handy in my workflow: I drag them all to the timeline (after fixing 01, 02, etc.), I open each of them in the viewer and I fix its IN and OUT points. Closing the remaining gaps in the timeline is fast enough, even if not automatic. I could also drag subclips one by one to the viewer and then to the timeline, but I'm used the other way.
    Piero
(As far as I know when you drag a segment into the timeline you create a subclip in the timeline without using the Make Subclip command)

  • Batch for renaming subclips

Is there an easy way to rename subclips in a batch?
The automatic way of renaming by FCP is complex,
too many characters. I want to rename them, while
numbers are increasing automatically. Thanks PR.

Sorry, but no, you can't. AFIAK. The subclips will have the name of the original clip, then SUBCLIP. And yeah, that is a pain and is REALLY stupid. What I like doing is going thru the master clips, adding markers and naming the markers, then I turn all the markers into subclips, and the subclips retain the marker name. THAT is slick.

Have two iPhones with the same id as I got hubbie one in week and when I got it they asked for email address so I gave the one we use, so when my husband started phone up he just put my password in. When he tried to back his numbers on iCloud they all appeared on my phone and now I can't delete his numbers without them deleting on his phone as well . Any help would be appreciated.

You'll have to migrate one of the phones to a different account, then delete the other person's data from each account (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).
Decide which iPhone will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't from each account.

I have my email forwarded to my cell phone via message to [[email protected]].
I do this for the reason that having my emails fetched constantly is a heavy burden on the battery.
This works perfectly, except for the fact that the emails come from a different number every time.
The numbers change by 3 digits from 001-999. (1-210-100-###)
I can write these numbers easily using something like excel to write the consecutive numbers, and not have to write one by one, but I would like to import these easily to my contact under "Email" for several reasons.
    1. SMS tone to be consistant
    2. Easy identification
    3. Easy deletion
    4. Message grouping
There are probably more benefits, however I cannot think of any at this very moment.
I want to basically write them all in to the contact to make the identity seamless.
I've tried to do so with

    POSSIBLE SOLUTION

I got the contact info which looks like

MEANING, if I can manage to merge the 999 numbers into one line of text, and add them to the numbers separated by "{space}:::{space}"
then I have my solution right there. This may have turned from an iCloud question to an excel question.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Fair enough.
I started doing this before unlimited data and emails on phones was a common commodity, on my Samsung Blackjack.
I then continued it due to its convenience. My only counter argument is this:
Even when emails are set to immediately push, I am always notified earlier by this forwarding message (sometimes by several minutes/hours due to the fact that it is not dependent on my being connected to 4G or wifi to receive it.
Also, to contradict snozdop's point that both methods use data and battery, I say this - when I use the forwarding method, the information comes in a pure text format and therefore uses considerably less information than an HTML and CSS rich email, with embedded images and such -also, unlimited text messages aids curve costs.
I will, however, give this method a go. In any case, a solution to my original question would still be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks guys.
