Subdivisions in Piano Roll

Hey all. I'm a little new to logic 8 but I'm having a problem.
The **** grid in logic 8 piano roll seems to be stuck on subdividing notes into triplet sets. No matter what I do to change to division of the quantizing, it's still the same.
In Logic 7, when you changed the quantizing to say 1/32-note, it would reflect that in the grid in the background, but nothing changes when I do this.
Am I missing something?
Thanks for any help.

Check your Transport window (underneath the time signature), I suppose you have changed the grid to triplets in there .

  • Enter triplet values in piano roll... and volume question

How can I get the piano roll grid view to temporarily change to subdivisions of 3 per per beat (instead of 4) in a 4/4 piece so I can align triplets?
Also, how do I change the volume of a single note in the piano roll editor?
    TIA

    1. In the transport bar, where you see the time signature (default 4/4), just below that is the beat subdivision. You can click on it and drag up or down to change the value. A value of 12 will subdivide a beat into thirds.
    2. You can't really change the volume of a note, per se, since volume is a MIDI parameter that doesn't apply to single notes, but rather as continuous data. You can, however, change the velocity of notes, which will affect the volume of the note if the note's velocity is programmed for volume change. To do this, choose the Velocity tool (escape, then 9) and click the note and drag up or down.

  • How to edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window

I edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window at the same time. (It is very handy way of editing especially in huge orchestra projects.)
I can see midi contents of all selected regions in Piano Roll at the same time.
    1) But how to choose certain one region of many selected to edit it?
    2) And how to edit all at once?
Hope the questions are clear enough.
    Thanks.

First of all, the Piano Roll has two mechansim, of what it is displaying.
Selected Track: This displays all the Regions that you select in the Tracks Window
One Track: Selecting one Region in the Track Area displays all the Regions of tha tTrack in the Piano Roll. If you select multiple Regions in the Tracks Window, then the last selected Regions counts.
Whatever Regions are now displayed in the Piano Roll Editor can be edited. Select the MIDI Events and apply the command.
You can also apply edits directly to the selected Regions in the Tracks Window.
I explain all those little details in my graphically enhanced manuals ("Logic Pro X - How it Works")
One thing to be clear about:
Tracks Window: Any edit is applied to the selected Regions
Piano Roll Editor: Ay edit is applied to the selected Events
    Hope that helps

  • When i try to open piano roll it is stuck on the same track regardless of whether another track is selected. I cannot elect a new synt track and pull up in piano roll

When i try to use piano roll it always goes back to a single track. Even if I select another track or adda new blank track it will not open.
Also if I add notes to the track that opens I cannot hear them when i place them on piano roll

There's a little icon in the top left corner of the piano roll window that looks like a pair of chain links. If that is selected (goes yellow) then the piano roll editor is linked to the arrange page region selection(s). Sounds like what you want.
It's really useful sometimes to be able to unlink, so that you can keep one piano roll open (to watch the timing of the notes, for example) and not haver it change each time you do something in the arrange page.
Also, next to it is a little man running icon. If that is selected, the piano roll will chase the cursor. If not selected, it won't. Also useful sometimes.
    Hope that helps

  • How to get rid of the new bottom layer with piano roll etc. in arrange??

    Hey guys,
Just a quick question i suppose.
    I work with 2 screens.
When I double click a midi event, i want the piano roll to open in a floating window, just like it used to be, and not in the new bottom layer (pop up) bar in the bottom of the arrange window. I want this because i like to edit on the second screen while still haveing an overview of my arrange on my 1st screen.
Does anyone know how to do this? Or perhaps know how to get rid of this new bar all together?
    I hope someone does....
    thanks in advance!
    cheers,
    PM

how annoying is it to go to a seperate screen set and then click a midi region just to edit it?
You haven't grasped the concept of screensets.
In the "old" way of working, in your arrange, you double-click on a region, which opens that region in an editor. You may have to move the editor position/size etc. You make your edits, and then close the window.
The screenset way of doing this is simpler and quicker. In your arrange, you select your region (one click, rather than a double click). You then hit a key command, lets' say "2" to switch to your editor screenset, which has the eitor or combination of editors you use, in link mode. As soon as you hit your 2 key, the editors will be recalled at the precise locations you specified, showing you the contents of your selected region.
When you are finished editing, just hit "1" to go back to your main arrange window.
Once you get used to this, you'll find it's a lot quicker and more efficient than all that rsi double clicking and window closing...

  • White flash, spinning wheel of death, Mountain Lion, MBP retina, simple piano roll edit then crash WHY ?

I have a brand new Macbook pro Retina OSX Mountain Lion pre installed, Logic Pro 9 studio. I'm running in 32 bit mode, Logic is crashing constantly and all I'm doing is copying a note on the piano roll to another beat. That's all it takes to crash. I will add to this post other functions that cause the crash as time goes on trying to work on a song. Anyone else experiencing this behavior ?

Did some research on the forums, I tried running  Logic 9 in 64bit mode and so far that seems to do the trick. I should mention that I was using 1 instance of BFD drums and quite a few waves plugins. I think the BFD was hogging the memory perhaps.

  • Fixed note length in piano roll

Hello ,is there any way to draw notes with a fixed length in the piano roll rather than using the last edited note's length?
In other words,i want the default note length not to automatically change every time i draw/edit a new note (with a different length).
Im quite sure this cannot be done, but i thought i should ask to confirm...
I also feel i want to say my opinion on that, you dont have to read it or answer back to it:
I find this way of editing very confusing and counter creative ,it sure adds extra thinking proccess. While you are drawing notes it
constantly keeps your mind away from your melody line since in every step, you have to stop some milliseconds and think
"which side should i drag to resize now given the new facts left or right?"....
And extra (unnecessary) thinking always acts against creativity.
I think it seems very logical the way i said that and that objectively, irrelevant to any personal preferences, this way of editing
,even if i doesnt annoy everyone ,it is indeed counter creative.
Especcially if one really does a lot of editing rather than recording.
I wish there was an option for that in the preferences, maybe something very simple like a checkbox "Automaticaly define default note" to uncheck.
Im sure it would be only a few hours of programming for the developers to do something like that, but it would be such a saver for people
who edit a lot or for people coming from other DAWS, or for anyone that simply cant get used to it because they feel it anti-intuitive / unatural...
There...i shared my thoughts, at least i feel a better know...!
(However if you read my opinion i d like to hear what other people (that do a lot of editing) feel )

You can use the transform tool but it's "after the fact". Simply rubberband a group of notes to be changed and use the Transform tool under the piano roll's "function" menu. Choose "Fixed Note Length" then set the parameter box to the value you need.
There's also this workaround:  Find a note of the correct length already in the sequence or create temporary notes of the correct length. I'm assuming by "draw" you mean using the pencil tool. Move the pencil over the *center of note with the length you need, left mouse click and hold for a second, until the pencil turns into a hand, you will now have the length set for drawing new notes. The pencil tool is still selected so you don't have any additional selections to make.
Yes, it's a hassle, but once you get used to it you will find it's faster than what you've been doing.
*slight correction: when moving the pencil tool over the *center of a note, it will change into the pointer arrow, left click and hold and it will change into the hand, move the pointer away and it goes back to the pencil.

  • Logic Pro X.  Right-click not working in the piano-roll editor.  And colour issues.

I usually use the right mouse-button to open the toolbox under the cursor but this doesn't appear to work within the piano-roll edit window in Pro X.  Is this the same for everyone?  The right-click works in all other windows.  Seems pretty odd.
Also is it just me who finds the near-black background very oppressive?  I worked in front of Pro X for several hours yesterday and was left wishing I could change the background colour of the main and edit windows.  Is there any way to do this?
I also really need to be able to access custom colours for the colour palette as the new palette doen't sit at all well with me.  Any ideas anyone?  The manual states that if you double-click on a colour it should open the colour editor but it doesn't.....

It turns out that if you assign the right button to 'Open Tools and Shortcut Menu', it works in the piano roll.  It's obviously a bug which should get ironed out.
The other thing that's driving me nuts though is that when I change tools in the main window, the pointer still appears like an arrow, even though its function has changed.  When I pass it over a region, it usually changes to to the correct icon - but not always!  Aarghhh I'm going back to Pro 9 for now......

  • Why do the piano roll and event editor act differently?

In Logic Studio 9, this wasn't the case, but there are numerous examples now where editing MIDI in the event view acts right, and editing the same MIDI content in the piano roll acts wrong.  It's extremely frustrating!  Personally, I think who ever modified the behavior of the Piano Roll in Logic 10 should be fired on the spot.  I'd downgrade to 9 in a heartbeat if it was still available in the App Store.
Two examples off the top of my head:
    - Selecting a MIDI note in the event viewer selects ONLY the note and not all the MIDI objects that fall within the time span of that note. This is not the case in the piano roll as it assumes that when you select a note, you want *more* than just the note you're clicking on. This is a stupid assumption and is new in 10.
    - Dragging midi notes in the piano roll randomly deletes all non-note events and changes the action from "move" to "copy" where the only workaround when the piano roll gets stuck in this state is to do the same action in the event viewer.
Please rollback changes made to the piano roll in 10 back to what 9 was as I've wasted countless hours of my life trying to work around these flubs!

Try making a blank project with no settings at all and just add a bass from whatever plugin. Make sure there are no plugins at all on the track (not just muted but removed). Then try again.
I believe palying on the pianoroll with the mouse plays at 127 velocity but I ain´t sure. How about the output? Does it clip/go red? Then it will disort.

  • Piano roll doesn't show the correct track.

In the piano roll I have on (in yellow) the link button and also the catch playhead (in blue).
For some misterious reason, just in this file I am working at the moment, if I click any track it will display correctly the text information in the arrangment window: ie, instrument name BUT the notes that are shown in the piano are stuck to one instrument, regardless of what instrument I select.
Any ideas what could be wrong. It sounds as a bug but I may be wrong.

It was a bug. I ve closed the project, open it again and solved the problem. Just in case you have the same problem, thats the answer.

  • How to show all regions when opening piano roll?

    hey,
I want to be able to see all events in all regions when opening (not toggling!) a piano roll. I just switched from version 5 (yes, 5) to 9. It used to be like this: you deselect all regions and then just open the matrix editor (that's how the piano roll was called in ancient times).
If I do this in 9, the piano roll shows nothing. If I select all regions and open the PR, it shows only one. If I select one region, open the PR and then go back to the arrange window and select all regions it does show all info in the PR but this is a bit of a not-very-efficient work around.
    Anyone any idea?

double click a region, then highlight the ARRANGE window and type command + a. It is essential to choose all regions this way not as you mentioned by choosing all by hand. Remember that when you doubleclick a region Logic highlights the PIANOROLL. So you have to highlight the arrange window by clicking on the bar just below the main tools or in other words, just above the ruler (I don't know the exaqct word for it but I hope you know what I mean.

  • Copy and Paste Disabled in Piano Roll

HI All - this is probably something very basic, but I can't do a simple 'copy and paste' in the piano roll view of MIDI events. If I select a group of events on a drum track and then select Copy, the Paste command is greyed out, i.e. the events are not being copied to the Clipboard. I don't know what setting or preference I could have changed that makes such a basic functionality unavailable. Any tips?

Hey Thanks Bob, and, aw shucks, that is so obvious now you mention it. I think it was flashback to my original sequencing software, in which you would do all your edits in the Piano roll view, and I was subconsciously remembering that.
??? Copy and Paste works perfectly in the Piano Roll editing.... unless you're using the new standard (somewhat lame) single screen editing function in early versions of Logic 9... it's a shame they made this the default behavior.
Next time you wish to have all the the editing functions in the Piano Roll (formerly Matrix) editor hold down the Option key when Dbl clicking on a MIDI region. The Piano Roll will open in a floating window that has full editing functions...
Upgrade to 9.1.3 as this has been fixed, why are you using older versions of the program? You have Intel machines, right?

  • Why can't i see my midi in the piano roll of logic

I can create a track in a midi region, yet when I select the midi region the data does not appear in the piano roll! It did uintil I deleted a few tracks and now only 1 midi region appears and I cannot select another. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

The Fax modem printer is formed when you choose Fax PDF... from the PDF button of the Print... dialog box. In other words, do it once, even if you do not complete the fax, and it will be there.

  • Is there a way to show/reveal the piano roll (or score) from a midi input when recording an audio track in Logic 9?

I'm trying to record audio tracks in Logic 9 over midi tracks I've created using a software instrument.  I've done this before, and there used to be a no problem in seeing the midi information in the piano roll or the score while recording audio tracks, but it now impossible to reveal.  Has ayone else exerienced this?  Was there a change (update) that eliminated that as an option?  Or did I do something in preferences somewhere (unbeknownst to me when doing it) that has caused this?  Thanks for any suggestions.

Just open the piano roll fro the regions you want and deselect the chain icon at the upper left.

  • How do I get infinite bars when zooming in on piano roll?

When zooming in on the piano roll, the bars stop at 128th notes or something. I can add smaller values of notes, but then theres no grid to make the input accurate. Is there a setting or button within the piano roll Im missing?
    Thanks, Sverre

    No, there isn't.
You could use the "Quantise Time" option on the track or use a groove track to align your notes automatically.
