Subframe slipping in Final Cut 3

Hi!
Trying to sync up some pro tools audio with the audio track from my
camera. Having a devil of a time. need to move the track just a micro
inch to the right, only the software won't allow this.
Any ideas? Thanks!

You can edit in the FCP5 audio tools down to subframes but you can't move a clip less than a frame.
we used to do a work around in Ye Olde Infini-D that couldn't render fields. We'd compose 60 frames per second movies and then speed 'em up in After Effects to obtain field interlacing.
You might be able to import your footage into a 60fps sequence and obtain 1/2 frame resolution in the timeline. Dunno, never tried it.
However, we know from extensive tests conducted by lots of people that, generally speaking, an audience simply cannot resolve audio/visual sync greater than about 18-22 frames per second. So I'd suggest you're wasting your time on trying to tweak something that is imperceptible to a viewing audience.

Final Cut Pro Timeline- finicky audio playback

I'm not sure what is going on here. After I've had final cut pro open for a while, sometimes a few hours, sometimes a few minutes, it starts having audio play back issues. It's really strange but sometimes it will only play back the audio of every other clip in the timeline. Sometimes it will play back all the clips but just the V/O or just the music track. And then if it happens to be choosing to play the V/O only and I pause and then un-pause, it will reverse and play the music but not the V/O and I can hit space bar as many times as I want and it will consistently alternate back and forth. I thought maybe I was pushing the system and after it rendered, this would go away. But exported all my timelines and burned a DVD, and the problem persisted. I've found that avoiding having more than one timeline open at a time helps (meaning I might be able to edit for several hours before the problem arises) but does not solve the problem.
I have an iMac 24" 2.8ghz with 4gb of ram and 30/500GB available.
I have yet to re-install final cut studio but it may come to that.
I don't even know what to search for in terms of troubleshooting or help online but if any one has seen this before or has suggestions, I would love to hear about it.

That sounds really weird.
The only time I've seen my system do anything near as crazy was due to a keyboard language change. For some reason my iMac, every so often, decides to slip into my secondary French Cdn layout. When it does, many of the key functions change, so when I think I'm doing one thing, I'm actually doing something completely different.
Any chance that something similar is happening to you and you are unknowingly toggling audio tracks on and off etc.?
If not, I'd definitely try trashing FCP preferences as a starter.

Refining search for specific words in clips in Final Cut Pro X

Heads-up - I'm not a newbie to video editing, but I am certainly not a pro. Just an "advanced consumer" getting to know Final Cut Pro X, who has a hobby of video-taping mountain bike races, then creating a video for a year-end banquet. I have many hours of clips I to sort through. To catalog each clip I have keywords such as "fast" and "muddy", and marks that further describe the racer's moments.
For example, I have a long clip where I see boy amongst a bunch of other big guys doing stuff also worth noting. I put a mark "boy hops log" where he's doing his thing. Keywords to describe the boy are "juniorr" "log" and "hop/jump/wheelie". Within the same clip I will mark other racer activities with remarks like "slip" "spectator says good job" etc.
Back to the boy, who is in multiple clips, say 15. After the huge job of noting each clip is done, now comes the time to try to sort out the best clips of our boy who I want to include in the video.
I will use the Search Filter, using Text Field "boy". The Search Filter finds boy in all 15 clips. But now I have to carefully read each mark to try to find where my boy is buried in a busy, umpteen noted, 4 minute clip.
I seem to recall that FCE had a Function Key which I could press to specifically find the next boy.
Is there such a Function or key combination that will go next search item in a large field of clips?
If not, it certainly would be of help for the next revision of FCX. (Plus having keyword collections in one color, marks in another).

Hi Tom and thank you very much for helping. I know what I'm asking is a bit esoteric.
I already know how to refine the search. Usually what I do is look for any incidences of "boy" on first pass of creating my story All I'm looking for is boy. As I continue to build the video I might look for the boy to do something interesting.
Let's say the boy is fast, hops logs, and passes big guys; I know to continue refining my search I'd click on the search icon, then add Text and Keywords, Reels,decide between any/all etc to drill down to exactly what I want. However, I'm still left with long clips, and very large areas of text to read.
Let's say that I found 5 clips with "boy" "hop" "pass". The clips are often long, with multiple marks and keyword collections with In/Out points.
I know my inserted picture is teeny and doesn't really help much. But it shows that the word "boy" is buried in two marks. Each mark lives on a long clip. I must thoroughly read each clip mark to find "boy".
I'm sure there's better ways to notate clips. There must be overwhelming volumes in real production studios. If there's a better way to organize, I'm open to suggestion!

Final Cut Pro X Exporting to Youtube with Canon 5D Mark ii

I'm having problems exporting to Youtube with Final Cut Pro X. i convert the file and upload, but the audio is not syncing properly. The video is fine. Any tips on what to do? I'm using a Canon 5 D Mark ii. 24fps, 1080
Also does anyone know where the audio setting are on FCPX?

The process you suggested worked beautifully: images clear and true sound accurate.
I have over 100 30 to 60-minute videos to put on a client's YouTube channel. Using the YouTube settings in Compressor my first uploads colours were looking washed out, and the audio progressively slipped when played via the Safari browser. Your advice has fixed this issue, so thank you for taking the time to post.
To clarify what I understood your process to be for others who may wish to use it:
In FCPX choose 'Share' from the menu bar
Select 'Export Media'
In the options presented: 'Export' should be set to 'Video and Audio'; 'Video codec' as H.264; 'Audio file format' will be greyed out but show Quicktime Movie; 'Open with' will show 'QuickTime Player.app (default)'. Click 'Next'.
You'll be presented with 'Save As' options. Name the file and select where you want it to go on your drive(s), and click 'Save'.
Export will begin: my 6.84GB video, which was 45-minutes of 1920 x 1080 at 23.98fps, took about 35 minutes using a Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM
When the export is complete the video should automatically open in QuickTime.
Within QuickTime go to 'File' on the menu bar and choose 'Export for Web', which is at the bottom of the drop-down menu
You'll be presented with a box that says 'Export versions of your movie optimized for web-delivery to iPhone and the desktop'. Pick what you want to name the file in the 'Export as' and then where you want it to go in 'Where' (obviously enough). You can save in three versions for different contexts, but I chose only to save as 'Broadband', with the best quality as YouTube will automatically create different versions later. Click 'Export'.
An 'Export Progress' box should appear. My file took around 45-minutes to process.
At the end of the process you will find a folder with your chosen name, rather than a file. Click on tha folder, then click on the 'Resources' Folder you will find in side. Amongst other files you'll find a .m4v file with 'broadband' at the end of the name. Rename the file and change the suffix '.m4v' to '.mp4' and upload to YouTube.
As you said this seems to save a lot of time compared to compressor (perhaps half the time?) The file that began the process at 6.84 GB ended as 1.16 GB, and looks and sounds great.

Using the final cut pro trial, i can't export?

i downloaded the final cut pro trial a while ago, not activating until recently. i guess before i activated it, after downloading, i had to get switch my glitchy macbook for a new identical one. i don't know if this is the problem, but it could be. i am making a movie in the trial version, and under commands, export is not clickable. so, i used the share option, and tried to share it as a master file... then to an apple product... then tried to share to youtube. all result with the same thing. it'll act as if it's working, but after maybe 30 seconds a little message saying "Share Failed." when i click on details, all it says is "The operation could not be completed because an error occurred when creating frame 1543 (error -1)." I don't know what that means. Does it mean one of my clips is the glitch? I have no idea what the problem is here. Are you even allowed to export using the trial version anyway? I haven't been able to get a straight answer there either. Thanks!

As Bobbyyco said, you should definitely be able to share from the trial version.
In Preferences>General>Time Display, you can change the to Frames, which makes it easier to locte the slip that includes the frame in the error message.
You could then use a replace edit to substitute something ales in its place. Then use the range tool to select a short section that includes the replaced clip and export as a master file.
If it works, your project should export. (Transcode a new version of the clip by right clicking and use that as the permanent substitute clip.
If it doesn't work, turn off background rendering in Preferences. Select your project and from the File menu, choose Delete Project Render FIles. When prompted choose All Files. Do another test export as a master file without rendering.

Final cut support

I edited a sequence together in final cut, exported the video and audio seperetaly and put them in together in a dvd burning app. On the dvd the audio sync with the video was fine. Then I relized that I had no use for the render files or footage, so I deleted those. About a month later I wanted to upload it to the web, so I brought the audio and video back in to final cut, exprted the video and audio together (one single .mov file) for obvious reasons. I watched that and the audio was coming at least 1/3 after it should have to mach up with the video. The audio was even late in the sequence, but I'm using the right frame right sequence. Why is this happening?

The sound starts out in sync but after a min or so it starts getting ahead of the video. Sliding the track around would would sync it in one place but not in the other.
Yes correct, but you first sync up the start of the video by slipping the audio to match the video.
Then place edit points in the video track where the audio starts to go out of sync ( ctrl V )
Then increase or decrease the duration of the video between the edit points in sections using the ripple tool ( r ) at the new edit points to alter the over all length of the video in the timeline, but keeping the existing duration of the audio.
You edit the video to match the audio because its easier and quicker than changing the audio, but you can also do a bit of both.

Final Cut and QT

Is Final Cut 4.5 compatible with the newest version of QT? I believe it's QT 7.0.

I tried going to QT 7 and it increased my rendering times in FCP by about 150%.
I reinstalled QT6.5.2 and everything went back to normal. I'm running 10.3.9 but I only have FCP 3.
I'd really like to make this upgrade to FCP5 & Tiger but the more research I do the more frightened I get. And It looks like I'll have to upgrade DVDSP as well. Not to mention that they don't bundle the latest iLife apps with the purchase of the Tiger upgrade.
Now I've gone & upgraded iTunes and it won't run movies any longer till it gets QT7.
What to do? I'm not sure I really "need" to upgrade I just feel like I'm slipping behind the curve a bit.
Is there any improvement in image quality with FCP5 + QT7? Or should I just use this setup till I upgrade the entire computer?

Final Cut Studio Workflow Discussion

I'm trying to find out how many Final Cut users out there use the "Final Cut Studio Workflow" meaning; do you guys use Soundtrack Pro, Motion, Livetype and the other programs for your work? And how often do you use them? I think it'd be really cool to get a discussion going about who is using these programs in their editing workflow and how often and what they use it for.
Most of my work comes out of FCP but I use a lot of Adobe products such as After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator. I DVD author with DVDSP and use Compressor when I go to DVD or web.
I find it interesting that I mostly use the FCP studio for just FCP. I hardly ever touch Livetype; I've used Soundtrack Pro twice and I've never used Motion.
The reason I post this in the Final Cut Pro user forum is because I'm interested in knowing how many 'editors' are doing this extra stuff outside of traditional editing.

I use the tools I know. I know photoshop and aftereffects (sortof) and haven't gotten a handle on motion. I use soundtrack pro occasionally to normalize, and eq, but not for much else (just remembered that I did a cool little music piece using the loops in soundtrack pro. really blew my client away). I find I can do almost everything I need to do audio wise in fcp. Subframe audio editing is a little cumbersome but doable. But... I do realize that I'll need to bite the bullet and explore motion eventually.
I've used cinematools a number of times to remove pulldown from film to tape transfers and to change the frame rate of pal qts (25fps) to 24 fps (very handly when my english animators gave me qt's with the wrong frame rate.
I started out as a film editor, when all I did was make edits on a flatbed with a rivas splicer. Those days are gone forever. Every year I find I'm doing more things than I ever did before. Maybe not always with a professional skill set, but I'm getting there.

Latest Final Cut Studio Won't Install On G4 Powermac.

I have a friend with a dozen or so Macs!
He has just purchased Final Cut Studio with a multiple use licence and installed it on his G5 Powermac successfully but it won't install on his G4 because the "standard" video card is not up to it (according to an Apple compatibility checker that he downloaded).
The obvious solution, that Apple would certainly approve, is for him to spend a further £150 on a new card.
However, is there a hack he could use to get it to work with the old one?

Well, I've been to Holland, dawdling thro' the dykes ..and I've been playing with my HDV cameras - silly me: I upgraded from FCP3 to FCP HD 4.5, but - of course! - it didn't do HDV, so now I'm just waiting for my "cross-grade" universal FC Studio to arrive, so that I can play with DVD SP, as well as edit HDV 'natively'. (..I upped to a quad G5, as the wait for imports to transcode into the 'Intermediate Codec' was just too, too mind-numbingly -s-l-o-w- ..and exports took 10x real-time on my G4 Mac mini/PowerBook/whatever.)
But I'm typing this on an FCP multi-coloured keyboard (..or, I should say "Mark IN, Next Edit, Marker, spacebar, Track Tool, Render Quality/Toggle, Pen Tool, Mark IN, Snapping/Toggle, Edit Selection, spacebar, Track Tool, Hand Tool, Mark IN, Slip/Slide", etc, as you aficionados would know it..) so I am really trying..
Whenever I see a picture of dear old Albert, or read about him, or watch a video clip or impersonation of him, I always think about your glimpse of "the patent clerk" at Princeton long ago..
..meanwhile: back in 2006; I've got a big cheese-grater, nice fast hard discs, and am waiting for my raid controller to arrive (to run these two 10,000 rpm 'Raptors' ..the 72GB ones, which do work inside an Apple, unlike - apparently - the later ones..) [why can't they have more genteel names, like 'Daisies' or 'Flowerpots'?] ,,and I have all this footage to finish..
I've still got to complete shooting, and cutting, a TV programme about (..ssshh; don't want to say..) but I'm pretty much determined to do it all in iMovie HD ..just as a matter of principle ..though what that principle is, I'm not sure ..maybe "This program should be good enough for anything!" ..though I may cheat when it comes to colour-correction, or something equally obscure or abstruse ..or do I mean insecure and ostrich?

Final Cut - Syncronizing audio/video

Hello.
I just started making small video for my band in Final Cut Pro. One thing witch
teases me is that i can't move the clip or audio precise enough. It's like final cut is set to
move the clip in frames. I had turned off the snapping option - This helps a little, but not enough.
Any suggestions?

Final Cut Studio or CS5 Production Premium

I am getting the new basic 13" MBP, and I need to know what suite run faster.
I also want to know what you guys think about *Final Cut Studio vs. Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and AE*, in terms of what is better for semi-pro level editing.

Mini-Dvi to Video out from Final Cut Pro working

It's working fine.

@ Studio X : The files were originally created with Final Cut Pro, rendered out to QuickTime, then are being played back with Final Cut Pro. The file that has the most noticable studdering is a 60-minute timeline sequence in Final Cut. All files are being stored and played back from the Mac Mini's internal hard drive. Everything was originally shot on DV and formatted for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
@ Shane Ross : Are there any settings in the MacOS or FCP where I can improve the HDMI video signal? Or do you know of / have any experience with Firewire to HDMI converters? Unfortunately, my new signal path relies on HDMI from the video playback.
My current setup uses the Firewire output, which is then converted to composite video & analog audio using a pair of ageing DV tape decks. That setup is becoming troublesome due to age.

I just updated my RAM and I keep getting a crash report. I have a 21.5 Inch mid 2010 imac. I also am experiencing slow load times and when I try to open Final Cut it says that quartz extreme is not compatible and that I have no VRAM even though I do.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

I have recently purchased MacBook Pro with Mac OSX 10.7.3 Lion and I would like to install Final Cut Pro 6 Studio2, and it came up with this error: 'you can't open application FinalCutProStudio.mpkg because PowerPc apps are no longer supported..pls advise

Just one more quesiton re: this topic, I am looking to get rosetta but do not have Leopard or Snow Leopard...
I read that it is not on Snow Leopard only on Leopard....so do I need to get only Leopard? Can u advise?
Alternatively I do have Mac OS X Tiger so is it on this and can I install it from here?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge here, just trying to get my FCP 6 up and running asap....
