Subject  transparent  w/Blue  Screen  ??

I've been using Adobe CS5 now for a few months, and, of course, there is a lot still to learn.
When doing blue-screen compositing, I have tried several exposure techniques on the screen;  over exposing one stop, underexposing one stop, and exposing it exactly the same as the subject in front of it. It appears to work best if it's over exposed by one stop.
To composite the front and rear elements is pretty easy and straight forward with the Blue-screen Key, but I'm running into a problem that I just can't seem to solve.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to cancel out a slight transparency of the subject 100%.  I can always detect a little bleed-thru of the background.  I have tried viewing the foreground subject with the Mask Only option, and have made it completely white, and yet it still bleeds through when the mask is turned off again.  I have tried everything with the controls, until I'm blue-in-the-face....ha, ha, ha .
Using Ultra Key instead of the Blue-Screen Key does not seem to help either.
Could it be something weird, like the blue-screen material is the wrong color?  When I bought it, it was supposed to be for digital video, but if it is for film how much of a difference would that make?  Or, could it be something about the background scene I'm trying to composite into the shot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

> @ Todd: seems to me you mentioned you were working on tutorial or
something that explored the use of multiple instances of a keying effect
to get a more refined matte. Am I recalling incorrectly?
The "Color keying" tutorial on this DVD is exactly that:
https://www.video2brain.com/en/products-27.htm
I show how to use two instances of Keylight---one for the body and one for the head/hair---as well as a garbage matte and a couple of hold-back mattes for the eyes and the buttons on the subject shirt.
If you don't want to get the DVD, here is the same course online:
http://www.creativeedge.com/9780132616430
I try to not use this forum to actively advertise the non-free stuff that I make, so I hadn't mentioned this video before.
For even better keying results, I like to use a somewhat more advanced technique that Mark Christiansen describes in his After Effects CS5 Studio Techniques book: He uses a super-tight garbage matte created with either manual rotoscoping or Roto Brush (or even Auto-trace), plus a super-tight hold-out matte, leaving a narrow edge in between; and then the keying effect is only applied to that narrow edge.

  • Consolidate transparency and blue screen?

Hi- I have a transparent movie with an object in the center that then has a window open up revealing a blue screen. In the blue screen I want to place one image and in the backround (behind the transparency) I want to place another image. The problem I'm running into is that once the blue screen appears, it takes precedence over the transparency and my backround image dissapears. I can either have the backround image show through the transparency or the image show in the blue screen, but not both. I've tried nesting in layers, doesn't seem to make a difference. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Robert

It sounds like you've not yet keyed out the blue screen. Is that right?

  • White Clothing on Blue Screen

We shot HD footage of a subject against a blue screen. In one shot he was wearing mostly black. These came out really well using the steps in the Motion Manual pages 151-154.
We also shot him wearing mostly white and this isn't quite so easy. I have to turn the noise down to zero to get him to be completely solid white. Of course then, background noise appears from the blue screen. Is there something I can set differently to make this as easy as the black clothing was?

next time you won't make this mistake of shooting keyable video on a blue screen. the blue channel has most of the inherent noise of video, especially in the very compressed formats of hdv and dvcpro hd. green screen is much better for keying video.
creating an edge matte and combining with a core matte to protect your subject is the way you may want to go. this tutorial on after effects explains the concept. http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/newpage_wrapper.cgi?forumid=1&page=http://www.creativecow.net/articles/onneweerbarend/keyingtut/index.html

There's some speculation that some PPC apps running in Rosetta are causing the WindowServer process to crash, resulting in a forced logout. <</div>
This is exactly what happened to me. I was using Photoshop CS (through Rosetta). I scanned an image, then went to print it as a PDF file. I filled in the title and author fields, and as I moved to the subject field I was suddenly greeted with a blue screen (of death?) and immediately after, the OS X log-in screen.
I logged back in and repeated the procedure, and right when I got to the subject field again -- blue screen then log-in.
Do you have a Crash Log or Diagnostic Report for the WindowServer process at those times? If so,
report it to Apple (I suspect they have several such reports already).
The speculation I've seen is that some of these apps weren't doing things properly before, but Leopard could handle them; now SL can't, so there may be a good deal of finger-pointing between the companies as to who needs to fix what.

  • Blue screen, video subject blending in...fix?

I took some video on a blue screen and one of my subjects is wearing a color a bit too close to my screen color, so now it looks as though they are in the background and you can only see their head. I should have caught this earlier, but it's too late now! Is there any way to fix this? I'm kind of new to FCE 4, but I just finished reading Tom's book and now I'm working on my own project.
The book was fantastic! I was going to try to figure FCE out on my own, but I'm glad I got the book!

Blue is very hard to key with compressed digital formats. Green is quite a bit easier. I know this doesn't help but for future reference. Blue is used in film; green is generally used in digital video formats.

  • NEO2-FIS2R ATI 9800 AIW Pro TV Tuner causes freezes/blue screens. Help!

I recently upgraded my system from P4 2.4Ghz to P4 3.4Ghz Northwood and went from All in Wonder Radeon to 9800 AIW Pro. Only other change worth mentioning is I created a 0+1 RAID using 4 hard drives which were previously configured differently. I watch a lot of TV while I work on the computer. I do a lot of disk writes and data management which ultimately creates a lot of transfering of data between disks. Never was a problem in the old config. BTW, I also use an external HD conntected through USB for data transfers as well.
Immediately, my system went from stable to unstable. I first noticed that the destop redraw on bootup was slower. Then I noticed that the TV had a delayed response on changing channels and changing volume. Switching to another window causes a slow redraw and sometimes causes a jerk in the TV display like a hickup. Other symptoms include blue screens but no driver is referenced. The blue screen otherwise is a normal STOP screen except for the bottom quarter of the monitor which looks like video garble. Sometimes it just reboots. Sometimes, it freezes. I noticed that doing disk transfers while watching TV usually speeds up the behavior. Comparatively, my use of the TV in the old config was transparent regarless of how much I taxed the system.
Anyway, in view of the unexpected behavior, I decided to backup and reinstall the OS from scratch using a vanilla install method. Everything was detected properly, OS installed fine. Installed ATI's latest Catalyst drivers. I turn on the TV and within about 15 minutes of use, the erratic behavior begins. I figured it was a bad card so I exchanged it out. Same thing with the new card. ATI is shrugging their shoulders and pointing at MSI.
I ran hardware tests, updated the MB BIOS to latest available. Tested all four hard drives/RAM. I can't find any hardware issues. I'm very conservative with my BIOS settings so aside from the default values, I have only changed the settings required to allow for a 0+1 RAID config on the Promise controller.
I put my old ATI Radeon back in and ran the TV for hours and had no problems at all. I also swapped my old 2.4 back in with the 9800 AIW Pro and the problem is recreated so that is what has me ruling out the processor.
Here's what the box looks like inside.
    Antec 480 True Blue
    MSI NEO2-FIS2R (w/latest BIOS)
    1GB Corsair VS512MB400 x 2
    4 Maxtor 160GB hard drives, 8MB Cache, 2ea SATA, 2ea PATA
    Intel 3.4Ghz Northwood CPU, 512KB, 800FSB w/Zalman 7700CU HS/F
ATI 9800 AIW Pro 128MB DDR
    Front/Rear 120mm Case Fans
Optical drive, floppy drive, modem card, sound card.
NOTE: All USB ports are being used by devices with their own power supply except for a web camera.  All fans are using power from PSU. No fans use MB power.
I also checked to insure that the AGP card was seated correctly and verified that it was. So, I'm pretty bummed out that I just dropped circa $500 on improving my system but I can't even get it work as well as it used to.
I think I have found the problem but short of getting rid of the 9800 AIW Pro, I am hoping that someone else has had this problem and can help me out. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Good News!!
While the DDR voltage was set to 2.7, I recreated the conditions in which the failures tended to occur. Within minutes, it was obvious that something had changed as I had never gone that far without getting kicked out, freezing up, or blue screening. Since this is looking more and more like a power issue, I decided to leave all of my external USB connections disconnected except for the external hard drive because I normally transfer data back and forth frequently from it.
When I saw that the system was holding up well, I connected the rest of the USB connections. Everything ran OK for a few minutes but then the sound from the TV dropped out while the picture continued to function. Although, this marked another failure, it was a marked improvement over what had been happening previously.
NovJoe suggested tweaking the voltage to 2.7 ~ 2.8 so I upped the voltage to 2.8 and setup the same environment and the machine has run that way for about 3 hours. That one increment seems to have made a difference.
    Questions which come to mind.
    1. If this is a power issue, is it the motherboard's inability to supply the correct voltage to the motherboard components or is it a PSU issue which isn't providing the motherboard enough juice to do its job or a combination of both?
    2. If this issue can be corrected through tweaking voltages, how do you know how far to go before damaging system components?
One of the original symptoms with the TV is still apparent. Upon changing channels, there is a second delay before the sound and picture synchronize. Changing foreground windows also causes a "hickup" in the TV's sound/video. I'm more concerned with what this behavior may mean from a system performance standpoint rather than the annoyance since this is a 9800 AIW Pro and it should be snappy instead of sluggish.
Up the AGP voltage? On that subject, the people here seem to have a lot of background with tweaking the BIOS. I'd appreciate any other ideas in tweaking this system as well.
Ultimately, I have to answer the question of whether I need to get a bigger PSU or can I safely correct my system performance by using BIOS tweaks?
Thanks again for all your help.

I recovered file c_1252.nls from backup folder on harddrive. But when i restarted again the new c_0437.nls shown missing and this i got so many times after each n every rescue n recovery options. Then I again rescued all the files in system32 folder and restarted my laptop. Which restarts good uptill it asked for domain password . But when i clicked to enter the password the error messege shown " Diskeeper not present" and subsequently "SQL server is disturbed" like that . But the login successful and when the desktop arises the windows intstaller window shows but no further processing even i waited for 15 min. I don't have a similar machine to look at so this is a bit of a guess:
Per page 30 or your user's guide http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g400sg400stouchg500sg500stouchg405sg505s_ug_e...:
How can I start the BIOS setup utility?
To start the BIOS setup utility:
    1 Shut down the computer.
2 Press the Novo button and then select BIOS Setup
There should be a tab labelled something like "Configuration" and on that page something like "SATA controller mode".  Select "compatible" and save and exit.
I'm not certain this will fix your problem, but it's worth a try.

  • Total Blue Screen Crash

Just had a really nasty crash, almost like a kernel panic except that there was no panic message.
Had been running without a restart since installing 10.5.6. Woke up the computer from sleep and plugged in my iPhone 3g (running 2.2). It had apparently synched and was simply charging at the time of the crash (but see below).
Several other applications had been running since the day before, including Entourage, Excel, and Word (all 2004, last updated a few months ago; there is a new 11.5.0 update I have not installed). Had checked mail a few minutes before with Entourage and it was hidden. Word was visible on my external monitor (which has the menu bar), and I was actively using Excel on the Macbook screen, editing a formula in a newly-added column. A few keystrokes back Excel had lost keyboard focus (as happens every five minutes or so, apparently a known problem for Rosetta) but as usual clicking on the desktop and then in Excel brought it back.
Between two keystrokes, total crash. Both screens went pale blue with no messages of any kind, and a few seconds later I found myself at the startup login screen with the generic space background. Login completion seemed much faster than after a full restart, so probably some things were either still running or in a state that let them be used without reloading. But all applications were gone; I checked with Activity Monitor and nothing was running except system tasks and my login startup items. When I restarted Excel it loaded a recovery file that was nearly current; I lost only a few minutes of work.
The console log makes it look as if the trigger may have been a failed iPhone synch operation of some kind. Just after it was logged (with a crash report sent automatically) there are a whole series of termination messages (WindowServer event port death, and a whole series of Exited: Terminated events for various applications.)
Is this a known crash? If not, what's the best way to report it? It could be helpful to the OS team to have my logs. It may be relevant that Paragon NTFS was running (though not in active use), and posted some error messages to the console log during the crash and restart.

This is an old thread, but I'm replying in case anyone can shed more light on the subject -- or if my experience helps.
I've had the same blue screen crash a couple of times with my new MacBook Pro (which replaced a MacBook Pro with an apparent hardware problem about a week ago). Though I had problems with the first machine, I never had the blue screen issue with it (and it had a virtually sound-free trackpad click, which is sadly not the case on the replacement machine). But those are stories for another day.
Anyway, I also have Excel 2004 installed on my machine (I also have Excel 2008 installed). But neither app was open during the last blue screen crash, a few moments ago. I only had a few applications open at the time: Mail, Microsoft Entourage 2008, Firefox, TextEdit and possibly Microsoft Word 2004.
I was composing an email in Entourage when the computer screen simply became blue. A few seconds later I was returned to my desktop. All of my applications had closed, and when I reopened Entourage, I found a recovered version of the email I'd been composing, with just a sentence of recent typing unsaved.
This has happened at least one other time on this machine -- again, just a blue screen that functioned like a very quick restart, with no accompanying kernel panic or error message. This machine also was giving me kernel panics the first few days I was working with it, but something -- a Firefox reinstall, a few trashed prefs and library files -- seems to have resolved that.

  • ITunes Blue Screen of Death when starting

Since iTunes 4.7, half the time when I enter iTunes, I get a stop error 0x00000050 or PAGEFAULT_IN_NONPAGEDAREA
Sometimes when iTunes starts, it will run just fine, but most of the time it just crashes instantly. When I reboot, the computer says its recovered from a serious error, most likely caused by a device driver. I dont know how to isolate the error, because the error result isnt that specific. The only changes I've made to the system before these errors is installing or reinstalling iTunes.
I used to not care as much because I normally use winamp, but now that I recently bought an ipod, I use it a lot more often. Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Notebook with blue screen of death and HP Ceement errors

    Hello, I am using:
Product name: HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC
    Product number: QE310UA#ABA
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1
I have been having a few message/errors lately and suspect they are related
    1) The "blue screen of death" has shut down operations a few times now, that I have seen. When it reboots, all my passwords are gone, all new log ins are required. I know it's been happening more than I see because my passwords will dissapear while I am away from my laptop and I had not seen it.
    2) Error message "HP CEEment has stopped working, windows is looking for a solution to solve this problem", comes up a lot. Daily, usually twice at a time. I googled this and a few "answers" said to look at your firewall and to "allow" HP Ceement. I called Norton and they showed me that it is allowed, so they are not the issue and to contact HP, hence why I am here.
    3) Not sure if this last one is part of the issue, but it has come up more than once lately. Error "Your current settings do not allow file to be downloaded". I ssupect when the computer reboots after the blue screen the security is automatically heightened and that is why I got this, as well as loose passwords and a couple other "secruity level" type problems.
    Thanks for the help, Amy

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
I can offer the following in hopes that it may help.
First, a bit about the CEEment program:
    CEEment Overview
    Excerpted:
CEEment stands for Customer Experience Enhancement. CEEment (HPCEE.exe) is the reporting tool that HP uses to collect and study anonymous data. You can activate CEEment when you set up your computer. Or, you can activate using HP Advisor or HP Support Assistant at any time.
    Commentary
It might be that the CEEment program is not the direct cause of the problem, that is, the issue might be symptomatic of the underlying problems -- it may be part of the train wreck, so-to-speak.
In any case, while the system is up and running you can try the following to fix the issue or to at least try to eliminate the CEEment program from the mix.
Download Install a new copy of the latest version of the HP Support Assistant on your system:
    HP Support Assistant
If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select run as Administrator and install.
    Reboot the system
If you like, you can switch OFF the CEEment program and the other checks that HP Support Assistant performs on your system.
Example (HP Support Assistant Version 7.4.45.4)
Open the HP Support Assistant > Settings >
Scroll down to Warranty and Services >
Next to Check warranty now >>
CHECK No, I do not want to send this data >
Scroll down to Would you like to share anonymous usage data with HP? >
    CHECK No >
Under Welcome Screen (if necessary) >>
UNCHECK Show a welcome screen when I open HP Support Assistant >

You may want to create an extra / new account with administrator privileges on the computer in case the issue is related in some way to your account.
You do want to make sure you have your personal data backed up -- make an extra effort to make sure your critical data is backed up somewhere other than on the computer.  Make a copy of those files to a USB drive or to the Cloud.  Make sure you include your bookmarks.

  • BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) when starting AE CS5

Is anyone else having this problem?  It started randomly after a fresh install where AE just crashes to bsod and writes a dump file.  After I reboot, I can go into it no problem but it tells me this error.
"After Effects Warning: Error parsing properties list from file C:\users\joe\appdata\roaming\after effects\10.0\AIFEffectCache.xml.  It has been renamed to "AIFEffectCache.xml.old for backup.  Proceeding."
I've tried disabling OPENGL, defaulted back to default prefs..  No idea why this is happening but it's only in AE.  No other application crashes my machine.
Thoughts?  Please let me know.  Thanks!

  • IMac intel: 5 minutes of blue screen before startup! Help!

    Hi-
I have a Core Duo 17" iMac. I've erased the hard drive and installed a clean, new copy of 10.5. It takes the computer 5 minutes of blue screen before starting. There are no peripherals attached, no other software than the Apple system software installed. I erased the hard drive and installed 10.6, and had the same problem. Reset the SMC, zapped the PRAM. Replaced the memory chips. Replaced the hard drive. Nothing helps.
The console log shows lots of delay about "did not die after sending SIGKILL." The Console log also shows the 5 minute delay in startup. In the log below, look at the entry at 5:21 pm on 9/15. That's when the computer started, then the next entry is 5 minutes later at 5:26pm. That's my 5 minute blue screen startup.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks.

Curious to know how you got to 10.5.8, If you went through Software Update, using the "Delta" updates, or if you used the 10.5.8 Combo? It might be worthwhile applying (or re-applying) the 10.5.8 Combo, which might serve to fill in anything missing or possibly corrupted.

The other thing I'd try is running Applejack which is a very useful little program for troubleshooting and repairing. It runs from Single User Mode. Hold CMD-S at the startup chime. Here's a short article explaining how it's used. (Also, be sure to read the Read Me.) It's very easy to use. You just follow the on screen prompts. First, just type in applejack and press return. To begin with, I'd only run it only for steps 3 and 4, which will do a relatively light cache cleaning (but, importantly in your case, clean out the boot cache) and check for corrupted Preference files. Doing it this way, you'll also be able to run those steps for your user, not just the system. If that doesn't help, you can run it for deeper cache cleaning by typing in applejack AUTO and let it run through a full sequence of tasks. Note: that if you do a deeper cache cleaning, you can expect the system to run a bit slower until those caches are rebuilt.

  • Blue-Screen in PHOTOSHOP 7.0  ??

I know everyone on here are for questions, answers, and inquires about Adobe Premiere CS5 or newer, but since so many of you are so highly skilled using that program I was wondering if any of  you were also knowledgeable about Adobe Photoshop 7.0.  I realize it is a pretty old program, but it's all I have for now.
Lately I've been learning how to do blue-screen compositing with CS5, and I love it.  I've been told I could do the same thing with still images in Photoshop, but I have never been able to discover how in all these years I've had the program.
If any of you "experts" know how I can do this, please explain it to me in DETAIL.  If not, could you please recommend a forum or whatever, where I could learn to do it in Photoshop?
    Thanks.

I am with Charles on this.
I might start with, say the Magic Wand, or the Magnetic Lasso, but usually begin with the Pen Tools, and Paths, as I have such fine control and the mathematically defined Bezier Curves. There are many Tools for Selections, and as stated, I will let the image dictate which I use, and probably in which order.
When my Selection has been refined, I will go into QuickMask Mode (Q key is a toggle for to/from QM Mode on the PC), and do some touchup. Now, I have my Selection ready, and will do a Save Selection, choosing to do so as a Layer Mask. Note: you cannot have a Layer Mask on the Background Layer. Just Dbl-click on the Background Layer, and either Rename it, or accept the default name. Now, you can apply a Layer Mask.
This will take you surrounding area to Transparent. Here, I usually turn OFF the gray checkerboard Transparency display, so I can fine tune things a bit more, and clearly see what I am doing - don't forget to turn that back ON, or you can be very confused with the next image.
For that last bit of tuning, I want to see my knocked out image, against white, usually. Here, click on the Layer Mask, or make it active in the Channels Palette. Magnify the edges of your image, and use use a Brush to "paint in," or "paint out," on that Layer Mask. If you look at your colors in the Toolbox, they will have switched to black and white, when you clicked on the Layer Mask. If not, you have not clicked on the Layer Mask. I use a small, soft-edged Brush, and then the X key, which toggles between black (paint in the Layer Mask), or whte (paing out the Layer Mask, like an Eraser, without having to switch Tools, or Brush Sizes, or Shape).
The last step is to turn OFF RGB, and look ONLY at that Layer Mask. It will now show a black. Check for pin holes, or missed pixels. Study that Mask carefully.
Turn back on the gray checkerboard Transparency Display - Done!
Good Masking/Selections take time, but the effort is rewarded by a clean knockout.
Remember: only some formats support Transparency - PSD, PNG, EPS (with a Clipping Path), etc.. JPEG will NOT support Transparency.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Flash video with blue screen

    Hello everyone,
Using Adobe Premiere CS3, I have created a talking head video
against a blue screen backdrop, and exported it as an FLV with
alpha encoded. This works beautifully to create a floating talking
head with a fully transparent background in a separate Flash movie,
or in a Captivate 3 slide show. But when I tried to insert the
video into a new layer in a Dreamweaver HTML page, the background
was opaque white. The blue screen transparency effect worked and
allowed the default white background of the Flash document to shine
through. That's obviously not the result I want for the web page,
though. I just want the floating head.
I'm hoping there is a quick solution for this. Does anyone
know how to accomplish this? I am using Dreamweaver CS2 at the
    moment (i.e., Dreamweaver 8).

I tried updating my ATI driver but I continued to have intermittent problems (system hangs and unexpected reboots) with current versions of Shockwave in Firefox - a right pain in the neck. I noticed that the date changed on the driver ... but not the version ... ??!!
So I am now back where I started (I rolled back the device driver):-
    Shockwave Flash 10.1.102.64
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro, device driver version, 8.401.0.0 dated 27/07/2007.
Haven't the folks at Adobe/Firefox heard of 'backwards compatibility' ?!
It seems I am stuck now ... until a version of Flash comes out which addresses my specific problem ...
Does anybody have a solution ??
    MANY THANKS!
